J. Philip Smith Grand Master of Masons in the District of Columbia
Grand Master was born and raised in Washington, D.C. He is a graduate of St. Albans Preparatory School in D.C., Columbia College in New York City, and Yale University Law School in New Haven, Connecticut. He also attended the University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland. Since his admission to the Bar of the District of Columbia in 1955, Most Worshipful Brother Smith's legal career has been almost-evenly divided between service in the Federal Government and private practice. Among
other positions in the Federal sector, he has served as Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia and as Assistant Solicitor for the United States Department of the Interior. Most Worshipful Brother Smith is planning to take the year off from work during his term as Grand Master in 1995 so that he can devote his full time and attention to the office of Grand Master.
