Grand Lodge School Evening Sessions A part of the old wedding litany, "something old, something new" might be said to apply to the Grand Lodge School of Instruction for 1992. The "something old" is a return to evening sessions of the school, after a one-year experiment with Saturday morning sessions in 1991, an effort which produce mixed results in attendance and effectiveness. This year the school will convene at Takoma Lodge Hall at 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month (omitting July, August, and
December). However, only on the second Saturday will the school demonstrate the formal opening and closing. On the fourth Saturday, full and associate members of the Work and Lectures Committeewill be present to give ritual instruction to Lodge officers and interested Masons on an as-needed and as-requested basis. On the second Saturday, dinner is served at 6:30 p.m. followed by the opening of the school promptly at 7:30. For-

VINCENT MICHAEL MAHON
The Grand Lodge and Masonry in this jurisdiction sustained a great loss in the passing on December 29,1991, of Junior Grand Deacon Vincent Michael Mahoney, less than one day following his installation in that office at the St. John's Day Communication. Succumbing to a series of angina attacks, Brother Mahoney died at age 62, leaving a grieving family and a host of brother Masons and non-Masonic friends who mourn his passing. Rose Croix services, conducted by Evangelist Chapter of the local Scottish Rite Valley, were followed on December 31 by a memorial service conducted by LaFayette-Dupont Lodge No. 19, which he had s o ably served as Master in 1988; both services were held at the church to which he and his wife, Anne Brooks Mahoney, had devoted so much time and energy, Temple Hill Baptist Church in Bethesda, Maryland. A large assemblage in attendance also heard a fitting memorial eulogy presented by the church pastor. A native of Lowell, Massachusetts, and reared in an Irish Roman Catholic home, our brother completed an honorable career in U. S. Army Intelligence, and after his retirement in 1968, h e had a second careerwith the management consulting firm of Booz-Allen and Hamilton in Bethesda. While serving in Germany, Brother Mahoney was raised a Master Mason in Lebanon Lodge No. 856 in Augsburg in 1967. Brother Mahoney, who was also an affiliate of Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22 in Alexandria, subsequently entered LaFayetteDupont Lodge by affiliation in 1985, and served as its Worshipful Master three years later. Brother Mahoney's other Masonic activities were numerous, including service in 1991 as Venerable Master of Mithras Lodge of Perfection in the Scottish Rite (he was 32" K.C.C.H.); as a Trustee of Almas Shrine Temple; and as a member of the Shrine's Finance & Accounts Committee. Interment took place at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Burkeville, Virginia, on January 2,1992. In addition to his wife, Brother Mahoney is survived by a daughter, Helen Brooks Mahoney Blackwood; two grandchildren; and a brother and four sisters. Those so inclined maydirect contributions to theBMHRestoration Fund, 9400 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, M D 20814, the site of the memorial serviceon December31 and thehome of thesmall church to which Vince and Brooks devoted s o much of their energies during recent years. As a memorial to our departed Brother, the Grand Lodge set up the Vincent Mahoney Memorial Scholarship under the Masonic Foundation of the District of Columbia. Contributions to this Scholarship may be made by check payable to the Masonic Foundation and addressed to the Foundation at 5428 MacArthur Blvd., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20016.

Masonic Outreach In furtherance of its outreach program to the community at large in the District of Columbia, the Grand Lodge and the Association of Worshipful Masters of 1992areworking, o n behalfof the St. John's Development Center, to make the 1992 Hexagon theater production a success. In its 37-year history, Hexagon, modeled after the Triangle Club of Princeton, has raised more than $1,750,000 for selected charities, which have included in the past the American Cancer Society, Childrens Hospital, the Hillcrest Children's Center, the Washington Heart Association, Second Genesis, the Florence Crittenden Home, S.O.M.E., the Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind, the Boy's and Girl's Clubs of Washington, and last year's beneficiary -- Martha's Table. The St. John's Development Ccnter, a MacArthur Boulevard neighbor, has since 1868 provided help to those who suffer from the ravages of autism and/or mental retardation as well asother devclopmental disabilities. Fully worthyofinclusionamong thecaring charitiesofthe city, the Center has at long last been named as Hexagon's 1992 beneficiary. T h e Masonic role in this effort is logistical; Masons and their ladies are assisting in the production by manning the box office at the Duke Ellington Theatre, where all performances will be given. Under the general supervision of WB Marvin Rosenbloom, Chairman of the Grand Lodge Committee o n Charity, they areworking in teams o n sixhour shifts, selling tickets and confirming reservations.

Masons visit the wards in the hospital and the nursing home, accompanying and assisting as needed, those patients who desire to attend the general Protestant chapel service. They also see that the patients are helped back to their rooms o r wards as required following the service. Often, from these seemingly brief encounters, lasting and helpful contacts with lonely veterans are made. When your Lodge is due tovisit the hospital, make it your business to be there.
Conference of Grand Masters and Grand Secretaries of North America Masons in the Metropolitan Washington area played leading roles in the 1992 Conferences of Grand Masters and Grand Secretaries of North America. M W John McWilliam Smith (MD) acted as Conference Chairman for the Conference of Grand Masters and presided over all of its sessions. In that conferenceMW Jerold J. Samet (DC) served as Chairman of the Conference Committee, in which capacity he was responsible for arranging the program; M W Stewart W. Miner (DC) served in a similar capacity in the Conference of Grand Secretaries. At the 1992 sessions significant changes in leadership of the conferences wereeffected. Albert Ames, PGM of Massachusetts, was elected Secretarynreasurer of the Conference of Grand Masters to succeed David Dresser, PGM of Ohio, now serving his Grand Lodge as Grand Secretary. Stewart W. Miner, PGM and Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of D.C., was elected Secretarymreasurer of the Conference of Grand Secretaries, vice Jim Shillingburg of Oregon, who chose not to seek re-election. Among the many itemsofbusiness to come before the Conference of Grand Masters was a proposal, subsequently adopted, to authorize the Masonic Service Association to undertake an appeal on behalf of newly emerging Grand Lodges in Eastern Europe (specifically, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland). Contributions to this cause may be marked "undesignated" o r earmarked for any one of these Grand Lodges. MSA will work with the American-Canadian Grand Lodge to determine areas of specific need.

eos Slowly but surely the Grand Lodge is accumulating a video-tape library. Recent acquisitions include "What It Means To Be AMason", "Focus on the Future", and a three-part Masonic education series, produced respectively by the Grand Lodges of Massachusetts, Missouri, and Connecticut. All are suitable for Lodge programs and all are available on loan, as is the everpopular "Unseen Journey", which is also available for purchase if you would like a copy of your own. As copies are limited, reservations are recommended.
