Meets 12 times on Wed 1/12–3/30 9:00 AM–12:00 PM FEE: $30 This will be the 3rd of 3 semesters of the ultimate nostalgia class, combining movie and music nostalgia from the mid-80’s to the end of the 90’s. We’ll learn about the history and business of film music and the process of creating a film score and soundtrack. We will see how the music enhances the images, how the images enhance the music and what happens to several of the most famous scenes in film history when you watch them without the accompanying music. You need not have taken Part 1 or 2 to enjoy Part 3.

A powerful friend of his challenged the Impressionists to produce a large significant painting. He took this challenge and produced the ‘Luncheon of the Boating Party’. We will discuss this painting in detail, along with the artistic background he developed in, his life, and his other paintings.

THE BEATLES: FROM LIVERPOOL TO ABBEY ROAD VINNIE BRUNO

Meets 1 time on Tue 1/18 9:00 AM–11:00 AM FEE: $15 This lecture will follow in the footsteps of The Beatles as they embark on their historic journey starting from their early days as a cover band in Liverpool and Hamburg, into the excitement of Beatlemania, including concert performances, TV, and films, through their creative ground breaking studio albums (Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band) to the formation of Apple Records and finally to their remarkable final recordings at Abbey Road Studios. Coming full circle, we will explore the highlights of each individual’s “solo” post Beatles work.

ASTRONOMY - PART ONE JOSEPH AIBINDER

Meets 4 times on Wed 1/19–2/9 2:00 PM–4:00 PM FEE: $30 The course begins with the basic science of astronomy and evolution of telescopes to the discovery of the big bang creation of the universe, the development and life cycle of the stars and sun, to their death in supernovas and their remnants as white dwarfs, neutron stars, pulsars and black holes. The course is highly visual with the use of images from the great ground based and space based telescopes and videos/simulations from NASA, ESA and leading universities. New space programs like Artemis that will be bringing humanity to the moon and Mars will also be explored.

American blues, into their early shows which dictated violence and chaos, through their notorious drug busts, personal and songwriting conflicts, and management and legal issues while earning the reputation as the greatest rock n roll band with classics from “Satisfaction” to “Brown Sugar”. For our encore we will highlight some of their post 60’s work.

We will journey with them through their early days as members of various rock bands (The Byrds, The Buffalo Springfield, The Hollies) to their coming together as a group and discovering how the power of their songs, enhanced by their intricate vocal harmonies, influenced a generation.

WESTERN CIVILIZATION: ROME, THE EMPIRE ERA—27 BCE TO CE 476 SALVATORE DILIBERTO

Meets 4 times on Tue 1/25–2/15 9:00 AM–12:00 PM FEE: $25 For almost five centuries, beginning in 509 BCE, Roman civilization was governed as a Republic. During this era, Rome conquered Italy and the Mediterranean world as well as developing its lasting achievements which include architecture and building, government and law, military organization, and a complex system of roads all of which led to Rome. Around 131 BCE, a series of civil and social wars will bring down the Republic. Rome will establish a constitutional monarchy under the leadership of Octavian the adopted nephew of Julius Caesar. In 27 BCE, he will be given the title of Augustus becoming Rome’s first emperor ushering in the era of the Roman Empire. In this next chapter, of Western Civilization, we’ll survey the events of this era, some of which will include: Rome’s expansion into Northern and Western Europe, the good, the bad, and the ugly of the Julio-Claudian emperors, life in the empire’s Golden Age, the coming of Christianity and growth of the Christian Church. During the 3rd and 4th centuries we’ll look at the division and reconstruction of the empire and the Barbarian migrations that led to the fall of the Western Roman Empire in CE 476. In addition to lectures, course readings and discussion, we’ll add a varied selection of audio/ visual resources with emphasis on life at the time.

ELTON JOHN: YOUR SONGS VINNIE BRUNO

Meets 1 time on Thur 1/25 1:00 PM–3:00 PM FEE: $15 Elton John in collaboration with lyricist Bernie Taupin has written approximately 500 songs and sold more than 300 million records making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. We will travel with Elton from his early days in London as a songwriter and session man through his international fame as a solo performer. We will focus on his golden years (1970 -1976) where he dominated worldwide record charts with 15 hit singles ranging from the ballad “Your Song” to the rocker “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting)”. In addition, we will survey his numerous and wideranging accomplishments including soundtracks, films and collaboration albums.

Meets 1 time on Thur 1/27 9:30 AM– 11:30 AM FEE: $15 The truly American voice. He was born in obscurity, but proud of his connection to Halley’s Comet. His ultimate goal was to become a river boat captain on the Mississippi River, but the Civil War changed all that. He served one month in the Confederacy, but went AWOL and went west and became a newspaper writer. He traveled and found a gift of gab and sarcasm that people gravitated to. He wrote some iconic novels that defined who we are and what we needed to be about. The voice of a teen age Huckleberry Finn advocating better race relations was an eye-opening experience for America. Come and hear the stories of that man who entertained and taught America what they needed to be.

This rich architectural history will be discussed; each style and characteristic. Likewise, the many furniture styles and their parts will be identified and discussed in detail. Also, the Colonial silver styles and their characteristics will be identified and discussed. The lives and art of major silversmiths of this period will be discussed.

DNA, VIRUSES AND RNA VACCINES: HOW DO THEY WORK? JACK ELLIOTT

Curtis. In the early decades of the 20th century, Edward S. Curtis' (1868-1952) The North American Indian project became the largest anthropological enterprise ever undertaken in the United States. From the 1890s on, Curtis took thousands of photographs of Native Americans all across the American West, yielding his monumental work, The North American Indian (1907- 1930), an illustrated publication of photographs in 20 volumes. Arizona's gold rush ran from 1857 into the 20th century and this class will discuss the major strikes, unusual prospectors, boom towns like Globe, Bisbee, and Tombstone, and even the geological features that give Arizona the nickname "The Copper State."

AFRICA & THE MIDDLE EAST: CULTURAL LESSONS LEARNED WINNIE FRITZ

Meets 1 time on Mon 2/7 or 4/4 9:00 AM–1:00 PM FEE: $10 This one-day 4 hour course may earn you a 10% discount for 3 years on your auto insurance (contact your insurance agent to be sure). But even if it doesn't, it will make you more aware of your actions as a driver and how to stay safer on the roads. There is a $20 charge for students who are AARP

members; $25 for non-members - paid by cash or check to AARP and given directly to the instructor. Be sure to bring your Driver's License to class.

GINGERTALKS: BOB DYLAN UNTANGLED: POET & NOBEL LAUREATE GINGER SWARTZ

Meets 1 time on Mon 2/7 1:30 PM–3:00 PM FEE: $15 Over more than a half century, Bob Dylan has appeared to us as many people and in many images. One of these images was that of a Nobel laureate. This program will focus on Dylan's work as literature, from the freeform poetry of his book, Tarantula, and his narrative memoir, Chronicles: Volume One, to his ballads and poetry, the influence of other artists and writers on his work, and the controversy surrounding his choice as the 2016 recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Meets 3 times on Thur 2/10–2/24 9:00 AM–10:30 AM FEE: $20 Do you have all of the necessary documents in place to allow someone to have access to necessary information and make medical and financial decisions for you if you become incapacitated? Will your assets pass at death as you intend? Will probate be required? Do I need a Trust? Mary A. Nykamp, an experienced attorney in the Sun City area, will answer these questions and more. This course will cover Last Wills and Testaments, dying without a Will in Arizona, the importance of asset entitlement, various Powers of Attorney and Trusts.

HOW TO NAVIGATE THROUGH MEDICARE BRIAN KEEP

Meets 1 time on Thur 2/10, 11:00 AM–12:30 PM or 1 time on Tue 4/5, 9:00–10:30 AM FEE: $10 The intent of this class is to help people understand how Medicare works. Defining what Part A B cover, how and when to take Part D, what is the donut hole? The class will explain what the difference is between a Medigap policy (Supplement) and a Part C (HMO, Medicare Advantage); define what circumstances can help determine why you may pick one type of plan over another as well as one insurance company over another.

TELLING YOUR LIFE STORY: ADVANCED HELEN SWAN

Meets 5 times on Thur 2/10–3/10 1:00 PM–2:30 PM FEE: $30 This class is designed for students who have taken the Beginning Telling Your Life Story class. This five-week course is designed to take your writings to a new level as students build on the skills taught in the beginning class. Some of the skills taught include enhancing similes and metaphor, creating flow in your writing flow, and transitions.

GINGERTALKS: BOB DYLAN UNTANGLED: TORCH SONGS & LOVE BALLADS GINGER SWARTZ

Meets 1 time on Mon 2/14 1:30 PM –3:00 PM FEE: $15 Although Bob Dylan may not be instantly recognized as the writer of love songs, he is credited with creating some 47 torch songs, wedding songs, and love ballads. From his 1963 release of "Girl from the North Country" (Album: FreeWheelin'), to the eerie but beautiful 1997 release of "To Make You Feel My Love", Dylan demonstrates an uncanny ability to express romantic emotions in a simple, relatable, and overwhelmingly poetic manner. This program will focus on the poetry of twelve of those songs, with direct focus on five releases familiar to all of us.

VICARIOUS TRAVELS—EXOTIC ARIZONA DESTINATIONS TERRI DION

Meets 1 time on Tue 2/15 1:00 PM –2:30 PM FEE: $10 Join Larry Lindner to explore The Wave and Havasupai falls, two beautiful, but rarely visited Arizona treasures. You’ll hike (virtually) to the Wave, a colorful, undulating sandstone rock formation in northern Arizona. Next, you’ll traverse Havasu Canyon and pass through Supai Village on the way to the spectacular blue-green waters of Havasupai Falls and on to Mooney Falls. You’ve seen photographs of these destinations, but few have actually visited them. Both destinations limit entry to a small number of visitors and can only be accessed by a significant hike. This is your chance to visit these destinations vicariously.

UKULELE 101 JONI DEE

Meets 6 times on Tue 2/15–3/22 4:30 PM–6:00 PM FEE: $30 Ukulele 101 students will be introduced to the Ukulele, instrument care; Ukulele chords, strums, and picking patterns. By the end of class students will be comfortable playing 3 to 4 chord songs in different genres. Please bring a notebook and ukulele. I have some ukuleles to lend out.

Meets 4 times on Wed 2/16–3/9 2:00 PM–4:00 PM FEE: $30 Using telescopes and interplanetary space probes and advanced simulations the solar system’s formation, evolution, its major and minor planets and moons, asteroids, and comets will be explored. Going beyond our solar system to nearby star systems and their planets will lead to distant galaxies, clusters and giant structures. New ideas about dark matter, dark energy and the evolution of the universe and the concept of the multiverse will be explored. Finally the search for extraterrestrial life and intelligence (SETI) will be reviewed.
