An exclusive experience to discover the true culture of Maltese wine Visit the Meridiana Wine Estate which lies scenically below the ancient, walled city of Mdina. The tour commences with an explanation about, the Estate, the characteristics of the Meridiana Winery and the quality of the wines produced. This is followed by a wine tasting of 2 different Meridiana DOK wines accompanied by a selection of local savouries which include Maltese ftira, gbejniet, bigilla and galletti. Valletta Tour
Experience Valletta the Capital City of Malta Recommended to be high priority on the agenda during your stay, is a visit to the ancient city of Valletta, which was built in 1574, and is located just a few minutes away from the Grand Hotel Excelsior. The excursion to Valletta, commences with a lookout stop to take in the breathtaking panoramic view from the Upper Barrakka Gardens. This magnificent vista encompasses the Grand Harbour, the three fortified cities, Fort St. Angelo and the Chapel of St. Anna, where the artist Caravaggio was imprisoned before he escaped to Syracusa. The tour continues along a most interesting street in town with all it’s different Auberges belonging to the various nationalities of the Knights and their beautiful baroque churches. Along the way to the cathedral, one can notice some of Malta’s famous wooden balconies, and view the first Law Courts in Malta called Castellania. St. John’s Co-Cathedral is the next step on the tour, which despite it’s rather austere façade, becomes awe inspiring upon entering. From the splendid fresco ceilings by Mattia Preti, to the marble memorial tablets upon the floor and the priceless collection of tapestries (Goblein). One should not miss the visit to Alvane Privilegiatum where Caravaggio’s masterpiece “The beheading of St John” is exhibited. This private tour is available from Monday till Saturday for 2 persons sharing. Entrance fees to St. John’s Co-Cathedral, are not included in the price. The Hypogeum The Hypogeum is a unique monument of prehistoric Malta, rich in artifacts, including pottery, bones and carved figurines. However, to ensure the conservation of the Hypogeum, the number of visitors per day is restricted.
