After over a year of remolding and expansion construction began, Grand Prairie Animal Services and Adoption Center is opening its doors to a bigger facility. The shelter began expansion in March 2017 to help accommodate the influx of homeless animals in Grand Prairie and remodel areas to provide a better environment for the animals. With the new expansion, Prairie Paws has: • Tripled the amount of cat capacity • Doubled the amount of dog capacity • Provided a healthier environment for the animals with a new air conditioning system that provides better air filtering • A new Spay/Neuter Clinic to increase the number of surgeries each week, including spay/neuter, heartworm detection, dental health and nail trimming
• Larger outdoor space for dogs that includes turf and the opportunity to play in groups The expansion also provides a better experience for potential adopters. New meetand-greet areas and a large outdoor ‘Get-toKnow-You’ courtyard will help guests have a better opportunity to interact with pets. Prairie Paws is asking for donations to help stock the expanded areas and accommodate the new number of pets. To view the donation ‘Wish List,’ visit www.gptx.org/paws. Prairie Paws is located at 2222 W. Warrior Trl. The Prairie Paws Animal Shelter’s regular operating hours are: Tuesday-Friday: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Saturday: 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday For more information, visit www.gptx.org/ paws or call 972-237-8575.

INFANT MORTALITY/CRIB SAFETY The mother’s health, environment and experiences affect how her fetus develops through the course of the pregnancy. Annually, six in 1,000 infants die during their first 12 months of life. A mother can reduce her baby’s risk of many of the leading causes of infant mortality and certain pregnancy complications. Below are some steps that can be taken to improve health pregnancy: • Reaching a healthy weight • Getting proper nutrition • Managing chronic health conditions • Seeking help for substance use and abuse • Getting informed by reading books, watching videos, attending childbirth classes and talking with other moms
Sometimes babies can be injured because of how they are being put to sleep. Let’s look at how to prevent these injuries. ABC’s of Safe Sleep for Babies Alone. Babies should never sleep with anyone else. Share a room, but not a bed with your baby. Back. Babies should always sleep on their backs. Babies are less likely to choke when on their backs. Crib. Babies should always sleep in a crib – every night and every nap. The crib should be clean and clear. There should be no toys or blankets in the crib.

THE GRAND PRAIRIE BIG EVENT CITY-WIDE VOLUNTEER DAY CELEBRATES COMMUNITY Register to volunteer or submit a job for the Big Event – citywide day of service – Jan. – Feb. 2019 at www.gptx. org/bigevent. The 2nd annual Big Event is from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2019, and brings together more than 1,000 volunteers to tackle more than 100 service projects and celebrate unity in the community. Grand Prairie was the first city in the nation to bring Texas A&M’s legendary Big Event, adopted by 125 university campuses nationwide, to a municipality. The national award winning Grand Prairie Big Event was initiated by Councilwoman Jorja Clemson, who learned of the Big Event through her grandson, who attends Texas A&M. Volunteers will be teamed with others to help residents who have qualifying service projects. The Grand Prairie Big Event is a one-day city-wide community service project aimed to help those in need. Jobs may include raking leaves, hauling debris, weeding, planting flowers, mulching, spring cleaning, litter patrol, and other outdoor jobs that do not require power tools. All jobs are vetted in advance of event day. They are in Grand Prairie, one-time only, do not require the use of power tools and are outside of homes or businesses.
The Big Event success is not based on the number of volunteers, or the number of service projects so much as it is about the connections made and unity established through Grand Prairie. It’s a day aimed at benefiting local residents and businesses to provide services that promote unity. The Big Event was established at Texas A&M in 1982 by Joe Nussbaum, then a student and now president of ACP International and Sa-So corporation in Arlington. In College Station, the Big Event is the largest one-day student-run service project in the nation. Each spring tens of thousands of students say thank you to residents of Bryan and College Station by completing more than 2,000 residential service projects such as yard work, window washing and painting. Since 1982, 125 other university campuses have adopted A&M’s concept and have begun their own Big Events.
H2KNOW – REAL TIME MONITORING OF YOUR WATER USE A new network of water meters and communication devices in Grand Prairie allows customers to monitor and manage water usage from an online portal accessible from personal computers and mobile devices. The new system, named H2Know, measures and transmits hourly water usage data – older systems could only provide a single monthly usage total. With the new system, customers will have the power to: • Receive automatic alerts of higher than normal usage spikes within a day of their occurrence
12
• Receive automatic alerts of long term continuous usage (indicating possible leaks) • Establish a monthly “water budget” and be alerted when reached or exceeded • Monitor usage patterns such as irrigation to better manage the frequency and duration of watering This system will also help the city find and repair its own leaks, better manage its Water Conservation Programs and provide more useful information to customers. To access H2Know, customers can register by calling 972-237-8200 or emailing waterbilling@gptx.org.

CYCLING SAFETY Iron Riders Dallas Cycling Club (IRDCC) is a fun loving group of cycling enthusiasts of various ages and skill levels...with a common love of CYCLING! Iron Riders Club membership is very diverse and we welcome ALL. Founded in 2013, the club was named in honor of the original Iron Riders - the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Bicycle Corp of 1896. On an early morning on July 15, 2018, our friend and fellow club member, Calvin John Middleton, was killed in a hit and run incident while training for a race. His untimely death was devastating to our club and the entire Dallas-Fort
Worth cycling community. Calvin was struck from behind by a motorist at the south east corner of Belt Line Road and I-20 here in Grand Prairie. As a cyclist, Calvin was doing everything right. He had taken every precaution on his bicycle including wearing full protective gear and having the proper head and tail lights installed on his bike. Those of us who knew Calvin and were fortunate to have shared road time with him, know that he would not want us to be in a state of sadness, but to turn this tragedy into triumph.
we have formed an official Safety and Advocacy Committee and are committed to working with local city and state officials to increase awareness and get legislation in place that would protect road cyclists.
To that end, it has become increasingly more important for IRDCC to become a present, powerful and positive force in the cycling community. As a result,
SAFE RIDING TIPS
As we cycle the roads of North Texas and beyond, advocating awareness and safety for cyclists and drivers, we do it in the spirit of the words of the original Iron Riders, “We Can, We Will... Together – Onward.”
• Wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet. • Adjust your bicycle to fit. • Check yourequipment. • See and be seen. • Control your bicycle. • Watch for and avoid road hazards. • Avoid riding at night. • Go with the traffic flow. • Obey all traffic laws. • Yield to traffic when appropriate. • Be predictable. • Stay alert at all times. • Look before turning. • Watch for parked cars. The Epic Culinary Kitchen presented by IKEA A culinary arts program is often left out of the recreation conversation because frankly, many recreation centers do not have the space and/ or resources for a multi-faceted cooking program. At The Epic, we have planned specifically for a kitchen and dining space that will host everything from a cooking class to wine tasting. Outfitted with IKEA appliances and furniture, the spacious area will be devoted to a number of culinary related programs. It will allow members/guests to be immersed in a modern kitchen and dining room experience. Our culinary programs will let participants creatively express themselves through cooking classes which feature accomplished guest chefs. There will also be demonstrations on efficient meal preparation for a family in addition to classes on proper nutrition and wellness. The kitchen and dining area will be available for rent as well. If you’ve ever wanted to learn about classic cooking methodology or international cuisine, this is the place to do so. If you have questions about our culinary kitchen and its programs and rentals or if you’d like to lead a culinary program, please contact our Culinary and Rental Specialist, Lesa Jones: ljones@gptx.org/ (972) 339-3717.

We don’t just service your preferences. We serve your needs.

They can even record live from the stage in The Epic Theater and into our analog console in the recording studio, a feature unique in DFW. Our event space features the Midas M32 digital console and QSC
Line arrays, while our recording studio is a hybrid work-flow with an analog console, outboard effects, and ProTools software. 60-MINUTE GOLF PRACTICE By Bert Walker Over the years of being in the golf industry, I have noticed many players practice, but don’t actually get any better when they play. Learning the game of golf is more than just beating thousands of balls on the driving range. It’s learning the different aspects of the game, in particular understanding how the game works. Whether you are a tour pro, weekend warrior, or novice golfer, in order to get better at the game of golf, I highly suggest developing a practice regiment that will benefit your game. Here is a 60-minute practice that I recommend: Step 1: Stretch, loosen up! Check out the internet (TPI.com is an excellent source) on what golf specific stretches would be good for you. This will help you avoid a severe injury when you are practicing. (5 minutes) Step 2: Start slowly when you get on the range. Leave the Big Dog in the Bag (the driver), and pick up a wedge. Start with some simple half swings, making solid contact with the ball. Start off aiming at close targets, and slowly lengthening out your swing to reach further targets. I also suggest putting down an alignment stick (or golf club) towards where you’re hitting, so you reinforce how to properly align at the target. (10 minutes) Step 3: Once you are fully warmed up, move down clubs to either the 8 or 9-iron, hit about 10 balls towards a target, and continue down through the irons. Note the distances that you are hitting and take notation. This is very important when you actually get onto the golf course. Again, pay attention to aiming at a specific target. (10 minutes) Step 4: After working on your irons, move to the woods and the driver. I know you’re tired of hearing this, but have a specific
46
target. Notice how the ball is moving (either right to left, or left to right, is the ball having a high flight, low flight, etc.). If you can communicate this to your golf pro, he can assist you much faster on any swing flaws that you are working on. (10 minutes) Step 5: Putt. I suggest starting close to the hole and move further out. This will give you confidence when stroking the putt. There are some excellent drills to work on the putting. I like the famous Jordan Spieth drill where he puts 6 tees down, roughly 4 foot from the hole, and goes around in a circle making the putts. If he misses, he starts all over! Putting games are a great way to have fun while working on your game. (10 minutes) Step 6: Short-game. Start off with less lofted clubs (7 or 8-irons) getting the ball on the ground quickly and rolling it towards the hole. Proceed upwards toward the 9, PW, and SW around the hole. Again, drills and games are a lot of fun while you are practicing. (10 minutes) Step 7: Relax and enjoy the view! In one hour you have worked on all aspects of your game and should start understanding what parts of your game that you need to work on. (5 minutes) If you have any questions, please give us a call at Prairie Lakes Golf Course. Remember, golf is a journey and enjoy the walk! If you need help with any part of your game, please give us a call.
