Mayor’s
Mentors
MAYOR’S MENTORS SEEKS GRAND PRAIRIANS FOR BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS Grand Prairie Mayor Ron Jensen kicked off an initiative in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) earlier this year. The program, called Mayor’s Mentors, seeks Grand Prairie residents to volunteer to be Big Brothers or Big Sisters through the BBBS charity. More than 60 Grand Prairie children are on the waiting list, some for as long as two years. “Big Brothers Big Sisters is a great way to invest a little of your time in a young person and make a BIG difference,” said Mayor Ron Jensen. “You may think you are volunteering to help change someone else’s life, but you’ll find it changes yours.” For more information visit www.gptx.org/mayorsmentors.

DON’T BE A TARGET FOR MOSQUITOES! PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY In the battle against blood-thirsty mosquitoes and West Nile Virus, you must take the appropriate steps to prevent mosquitoes from biting you and your family. While most mosquitoes don’t carry diseases, there are a few species capable of transmitting disease. High temperatures, high humidity, and stagnant water help to increase the mosquito population. Exposure to West Nile Virus (WNV) also increases. Arm yourself with the 4-D’s to prevent from being a target: DEET: Dress:
10
Use insect repellents that contain DEET or EPA approved insect repellent. Wear long sleeves/pants, loose and light colored clothing when outdoors.
Drain: Remove all areas of standing water. Change water in pet dishes and birdbaths several times a week. Dusk/Dawn: Protect yourself during dusk and dawn.
ACCESS HOURLY WATER USE WITH H2KNOW A 21st century network of water meters and communication devices will now allow you, our customers, to monitor and manage water usage from an online customer portal accessible from both personal computers and mobile devices. The new system, named H2knOw, measures and transmits hourly water usage data – older systems could only provide a single monthly usage total. With the new system, you will have the power to: • Receive automatic alerts of higher than normal usage spikes within a day of their occurrence • Receive automatic alerts of long-term continuous usage (indicating possible leaks) • Establish a monthly “water budget” and be alerted when you reach or exceed your target • Monitor usage patterns such as irrigation to better manage the frequency and duration of watering • Save water and save money! This system will also help the city find and repair its own leaks, better manage its Water Conservation Programs and provide more useful information when you contact us with questions. To access H2Know, you will have to register and we are eager to help you get connected. For information, please call our Customer Care Center at 972-237-8200 or email waterbilling@gptx.org.
WARMACK LIBRARY NOW OPEN The Warmack Library, 760 Bardin Road, is now open after an expansion and remodel. The expansion nearly doubled the space, adding 6,500 square feet for program rooms for children and adults, study rooms, a teen library, a larger children’s library, and an updated look. Check out our popular summer programs at www.gptx.org/library. And, with your free library card, you have access to Warmack and our other three offices: • Main Library, 901 Conover Dr. • Shotwell Library, 2750 Graham St. • Epic Reads, at The Epic, 2960 Epic Place Or visit gptx.org/library and use your library card to place an item on hold and pick it up at the Lake Parks Book Locker, 5610 Lake Ridge Parkway.
