PET WASTE POLLUTION Did you know that pet waste contains bacteria and parasites? When it rains, pet waste and waste associated pathogens have the potential to wash down the storm drains and into our streams, rivers, and lakes – untreated! In addition, pet waste is high in nutrients, which cause high algae growth in our waterbodies. This results in cloudy, colored water and can cause drinking water to smell bad and taste funny. Not only does wildlife live in our streams, rivers, and lakes, but City of Grand Prairie residents swim in and get their drinking water from these waterbodies! What you can do to prevent pet waste pollution: • Pick up the pet waste and put it down the toilet • Bury it (up to 6 inches deep) • Put it in the trash • Never leave pet waste when taking your pet for a walk or to the park – make sure you always carry plastic bags with you, so you can pick up the waste and dispose of it properly. For more information, please visit our website at www.GPTX. org/EnvironmentalQuality/petwaste or call the Environmental Quality Division at (972) 237-8055.

Knowing where to go when you need medical care can be confusing. First, check your Medical Insurance ID card for costs and copays on your plan for types of care you seek. When a serious injury or illness occurs that requires immediate care, know the difference between an Urgent Care Clinic (such as CareNow or Concentra) versus the new Stand-Alone Emergency Room Buildings popping up around the metroplex for Emergency Care. They may look very similar to an Urgent Care clinic but costs are drastically higher. Most stand-alone Emergency clinics state that in their name. Be sure you “know before you go” when treatment is needed. Below is a simple chart of basic types of care for different issues. Of course, the choice of where to go when an issue arises is ultimately yours. Understanding your benefits and costs can save you a bundle and prevent unexpected large bills by using the “know before you go” principle. If you have a question about where to go for a non-emergency, contact the Nurse help line on your Medical ID Card (if applicable). In the case of a true emergency, call 911. ($) In-Network Doctor or Telemedicine/“Virtual Visit” Visit your doctor for routine care during office hours or Use a Virtual Doctor for acute illnesses if your plan allows it. • health exams • sore throats • minor injuries
• cold & flu • ear infections • aches and pains
($$) In-Network Urgent Care Clinic Go for non-emergency needs when your doctor’s office is closed or if you need immediate medical attention. • simple bone breaks • sprains
• cuts • burns • minor injuries
($$$) “Stand Alone ER” Hospital ER Use the ER if you have serious symptoms or a life-threatening emergency. • severe bleeding • broken bones
• chest pains • poisoning

FIGHT THE BITE Texas’s summer heat is just around the corner and along with it comes mosquito sea¬son. Mosquitoes live part of their lives in aquatic environments and breed in almost any body of water. By eliminating sites with stagnant water the potential for mosquito breeding and transmission of diseases like West Nile and Zika is reduced.

top 10 TIPS
FOR GRAND PRAIRIE RESIDENTS
1. Know the current watering restrictions in Grand Prairie to help keep the city’s water supply at a safe level and to comply with the city’s wholesale water purchase contracts, the following restrictions apply at all times. Current Water Restrictions: • No watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. • No watering on Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday. • Even numbered addresses may water on Mondays and Thursdays. • Odd numbered addresses may water on Tuesday and Fridays. • When watering, a constant stream of water should not be allowed to flow into the street drainage. • Watering during precipitation is prohibited. Rain sensors are required on newer watering systems. Allowed: • Handheld and soaker hoses are allowed to be used any time. 2. Watch out for wasted water on your lawn. Review the Tips for Reducing Outdoor Water Use. 3. Consider using native Texas plants to conserve water through the Texas SmartScape program. 4. Learn how to make a rain barrel and begin recycling water for your landscape at upcoming Make It and Take It Rainwater Barrel classes ($50 per barrel) offered by Public Works. Next class in June 23 at Green Prairie University. 5. Learn how to transform your yard into a water-efficient landscape during free classes offered by Public Works and Green Prairie University on June 23. 6. Self-audit your irrigation system. 7. Check for water leaks around your home. 8. Have you noticed an unusually high water bill? Check our High Water Bill FAQ for info on how your bill is calculated and how to control costs. 9. Learn about composting and how to become certified. Compost improves the water holding capacity, drainage and workability of our soil. It also helps break down the heavy clay soils found here in Grand Prairie. 10. Follow the City of Grand Prairie on Facebook and Twitter for weekly #WaterSmartWednesday posts to learn more about using water more efficiently.
Please visit the Public Works’ WaterSmart webpage for these and other water conserving tips and info at www.gptx.org/watersmart.

Story: “A year ago, while playing pickleball during a College Station event, I had a feeling something wasn’t quite right inside. Went to have it checked out and soon after found myself being prepped for cancer surgery. It was serious, they said, and like everyone else I knew in similar situations, I wondered how this could be happening to me.

But then, after the operation, it started. People from all over began to help me heal. Neighbors would stop and swap encouraging stories. Family went out of their way to be in touch more. As my chemo hair started falling out, strangers who recognized the signs, would share their own baldness stories. These encounters were wonderful as were the daily doses of caring and kindness I received from my Summit family.

SENIOR GAMES
Determined to become healthier and more positive about life during my healing, I waited till the stitches healed and went back to playing Summit pickleball. Every single day I would be greeted by hugs, smiles, encouraging words and family love. The support was overwhelming and I’ll forever be in debt to those who stayed close through my comeback. Sometimes it takes an serious ordeal to realize just how fortunate we all are to have found such a new caring family at this point in our lives. The disease is not necessarily over as of now, but realizing that I am not alone and will not be alone, allows me to feel good about my chances. For those of you who were and are there for me, thank you from the bottom of ALTERNATE my heart.”

PRO TIPS FROM CHUCK YOUNG, PGA TEACHING PROFESSIONAL, AND BERT WALKER, PGA HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL Do you ever struggle with chipping around the green? Fat shots, thin-shots, bladed shots, golf shots that only a mother would like? Don’t get upset, learn how to chip.
4. Slightly open up your stance, and your shoulders. This will assist you with lining up for the chip-shot.
By definition, chipping is a shot around the green that is less than 1/3 in the air, and 2/3 on the ground. Very little body movement or hand action is required for the chip-shot. It usually is a higher percentage shot than its cousin, the pitchshot which requires much more finesse, accuracy and feel. If you are having issues with chipping try this method:
5. Place a majority (i.e., 60% or more) of your weight on the front foot (i.e., this would be the left foot if you are right handed).
1. Place the ball in the back of the stance (for a right handed golfer this would be off the right foot). 2. Use a less lofted club to get it on the ground as quick as possible (i.e., use a 7-iron as compared to a Pitching Wedge). 3. Visualize what you are trying to accomplish. Visualize the shot, where you are trying to land it, and how is it going to roll towards your target.
36
Try it out, practice consistently, and if it doesn’t work out, come see one of our trained PGA Professionals for a quick lesson. And remember, golf is not a game of being perfect, it’s a game of how bad your misses are!

Epic
Huge things are happening with even more to come. Our goals are lofty and we know yours are too! This point in the year is an opportune time to “press pause” and take a moment to reflect on the New Year’s resolutions you may have set for yourself or family. It’s estimated that 40% of Americans make a New Year’s resolution. However, according to a study conducted by the University of Scranton and published in the Journal of

We are more than a quarter into 2018 and off to an Epic start in Grand Prairie! Clinical Psychology, 60% of the most common New Year’s resolutions are dropped within 6 months and only 8% are achieved by years end. So what can we do to overcome the statistics and find long-term success? Letting a resolution slip isn’t a failure! Erase that mindset immediately! It’s an opportunity to evaluate what happened, what has changed, and reset. Rather than viewing resolutions as all or nothing, think in terms of goals.
Resetting resolutions into smaller, attainable goals creates steady baby steps to success. Every day provides the chance to reset the actions and thought processes that are roadblocks to achievement. Every day is a fresh start! No matter the goal or where you currently are on the path to attainment, The Epic team is rooting for you! If you’re not sure how to reset or just need encouragement to keep going, allow us to assist in the journey. The Epic offers innovative fitness, aquatics, fine arts & media, culinary programs, teenbased activities, athletics, library materials, youth activities, and special event space all in one location! We create life changing opportunities that turn your goals into reality!

Tips for achieving EPIC goals
Give & Take Change doesn’t have to be painful! Redirect your habits. ❱ Put down soda, but pick up an enjoyable book (Epic Reads has you covered!) ❱ Kick caffeine, but take up yoga or meditation
Share Your Goals
Keep it Simple
Studies consistently show that sharing your goals with friends or family significantly increases success rates. And please share your goals and achievements with The Epic! We love to celebrate with you!
Break down big goals in to less daunting increments. For example, “I want to lose 30 lbs” vs. “I want to lose 10 lbs” x 3. The first 10 lbs is a goal met! That’s great motivation to tackle the next 10 lbs. Before you know it, the main goal is achieved.
New Year’s Theme Instead of a resolution, pick a one word theme that sets the tone for the new year.
“Discomfort” Zones Do something outside of your comfort zone that is challenging yet positive.

EPIC FITNESS Hooverball, anyone? Think volleyball with a medicine ball and score it like tennis. Former president Herbert Hoover’s physician, Joel T. Boone, is credited with inventing the sport. The medicine ball typically weighs 6 lbs and is thrown over an 8 foot net. Throw the medicine ball over the net, a member of the opposing team catches and immediately throws it back over with any number of throwing choices. It is great fun and an awesome total body, functional workout!

What is cross training?
Cross training is an exercise regimen that utilizes multiple modes of training to develop a specific component of fitness or overall fitness. The benefits are well documented, numerous and include: ❱ Lower injury risk ❱ Increased body fat loss ❱ Greater total fitness Change it up! Try performing new exercises or varying your current exercise routine. One of the simplest ways to incorporate cross training is to alternate activities like jogging one day, weight training the next, and cycle class on the third day. Or you can alternate activities
CrossFit You can do CrossFit. Yes, you. In fact, it was made for you. Greg Glassman, founder and CEO, defines CrossFit as “constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. All CrossFit workouts are based on functional movements, and these movements reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing, and more. These are the core movements of life.” during a single workout session such as walking on the treadmill for 10 minutes, exercising on a rower the next 10 minutes, and cycling on the bike for the final 10 minutes. Fortunately, The Epic will have an enormous amount of choices for you to incorporate into your cross training routine including cardio and strength training equipment, indoor and outdoor functional training equipment, an indoor track and an adventure track, basketball, volleyball, pickleball, futsal, in-water exercise equipment, lap lanes and resistance vortex, lakeside boardwalk, trails and more! We’ve got you covered.
First time participants say it is the hardest workout they have ever done. CrossFitters say it has led them to the greatest fitness gains but that the real magic is in the community. One great part about The Epic is that all of the amenities in our facility can accommodate youth programs in fitness, athletics, aquatics, arts, theater, music, and much more!
EPIC COURTS LEAGUES One of the best ways to enjoy athletic activities with friends, coworkers, or family members is to take part in a recreational athletic league or tournament. Leagues and tournaments are great ways to exercise and participate in a competitive sport within a relaxed recreational environment. These organized leagues offered by The Epic staff will provide you and your team the opportunity to showcase your skills on our Epic Courts. We will offer different adult and youth leagues and tournaments each season in a variety of sports ranging from futsal, volleyball, basketball, and pickleball. Our youth leagues are great introductions to a variety of sports for children in the community and surrounding Futsal Court of The Epic
areas. With a high emphasis on sportsmanship and fun, we want your child to learn the game the right way and excel in a variety of opportunities. Participating in a league is also a great way to expand a child’s social and teamwork skills. Adult athletic leagues are great motivators for exercise and provide a competitive outlet in a recreational environment. These leagues are a positive way to make new friends or reconnect with old ones. Each game will allow you the opportunity to play the sport you enjoy and bring back childhood memories. Just like our youth leagues, we stress the importance of sportsmanship and fun at The Epic. We can’t wait for you to participate in our recreational leagues and tournaments.
Top 3 stats about FUTSAL you may not know ❱ 5 players per team versus 11 in soccer ❱ A shot is taken on average every 43 seconds ❱ A goal is scored on average every 6 minutes
Retired from your playing days but still like to be close to the action? Our youth leagues will be looking for volunteer coaches each season as this is a great way to support the youth in the community or assist with your child’s team. Whether you are there to cheer on your team or you just enjoy watching sports action, we have spectator seating located all around. Regardless of your involvement in athletics, Epic Courts are where you need to be.
