CYCLIN’ WITH THE MAYOR Fall is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors! Please join us for our Cyclin’ with the Mayor monthly bike rides scheduled through November.

These events offer a great outing for the whole family while engaging in physical exercise. The length of the bicycle trails are usually around 6 miles long and are set at a casual pace. Complimentary snacks, water and shirts are provided for all attendees. Riders of all ages are encouraged to come join the Mayor for an evening of fun! NEW RESIDENTIAL WATER METERS REPORT WATER USE HOURLY New water meters were installed in every home and business in Grand Prairie, and went live in July 2018.

Grand Prairie’s system, named H2Know, is composed of a network of meters and communication devices that allow customers to monitor and review water usage through a customer web portal on their computer or mobile device.

The new meters record and transmit hourly water usage data. The old system could only provide a single monthly use total. H2Know improves the City of Grand Prairie’s water billing and allows customers live online access to how much water they are using 24/7.

Customers will be able to see when they use water and how much they are using in real time. Benefits include: • Customers can view their water usage on their computer or mobile device • Customers can be alerted to water usage that is much higher than normal within a day of the occurrence – helping with leak detection and water conservation • Customers can receive automatic alerts of long term continuous use (indicating possible water leaks) • Data will help the city find and correct water leaks • Data will help the city better manage water conservation programs • The city will no longer need to access your property to read your water meter • Customers can establish a monthly “water budget” and be alerted when 80 percent of that amount has been used.

• Customers can monitor usage patterns such as irrigation to better manage the frequency and duration of watering This system will also help the city find and repair its own leaks, better manage its Water Conservation Programs and provide more useful information to you when you contact us with questions. Rainwater is the best water for your lawn, landscape or vegetable garden; Divert it, Save it, Use it! Come learn the basics and benefits of rainwater harvesting, and reduce the effect your storm water has on the environment. Participants will learn how to collect and utilize rainwater at home. This class is hands-on “DIY” where each participant will build and take home a 55-gallon rain barrel at $50 dollars each. Rain barrels are recycled food-grade containers and are roughly 24” wide by 36” tall.

We have broken down one thousand preselected books into sets of ten for you to read together. This allows you and your child to pursue an otherwise daunting challenge in a way that feels achievable and goes at your own pace.

September 20: LGBTQA and What It All Means: In this open Q & A with Dallas Resource Center, teens and parents can ask questions in relation to gender identity in an evolving world and learn more about available resources.

LIBRARY EXPANSIONS

The Warmack Library, 760 Bardin Road, is closed for expansion and remodel August 20, 2018, through February 2019. The current building is about 10,000 square feet, and the expansion almost doubles that, adding larger program rooms for children and adults, study rooms and a teen library. Each year, Warmack sees 175,000 people, racks up 30,000 hours on the public computers, checks out 110,000 items, issues 2,400 library cards, and hosts almost 500 programs, which are attended by almost 30,000 people.

PRAIRIE PAWS EXPANSION The Grand Prairie Animal Services and Adoption Center, 2222 W. Warrior Trl., is expanding to accommodate the increasing number of homeless animals in Grand Prairie.

With the new expansion, Prairie Paws will: • Triple the amount of cat capacity.

• Double the amount of dog capacity.

• Increase the number of surgeries performed each week, including spay/ neuter, heartworm prevention and dental health.

• Provide a healthier environment for animals with a new air conditioning system that will provide better air filtering.

The project, which started in early 2017, is expected to be complete in November 2018. Currently, the extension of

kennel space and air system has been completed, and more work is being done to renovate interior space.

Prairie Paws will be hosting a “Grand Reopening” to showcase the expansion and renovations.

The expansion and renovations will also provide a better experience for potential adopters.

“We are really excited to be able to show our community how much our animal shelter is growing,” Tate said. “Watch for event details in October and November!”

“The shelter will not only be able to house more animals, but it will be more spacious and visitors will have plenty of room to visit with a potential new pet,” said Danielle Tate, Animal Services Manager. “We’ll even have a large outdoor ‘meet-and-greet’ area for visitors to bring their current pets.”

During the interior renovations, Prairie Paws is seeking temporary foster homes to help house animals due to lost kennel space; and when the expansion is complete, the shelter will need donations of supplies to keep up with the influx of animal capacity.

Tate hopes to see less stray animals come through the shelter doors, and instead, help pets truly in need.

“There are sick animals that really need help from shelters like us,” Tate said. “With the expansion, we will have new areas that will help us take care of our most vulnerable animals – like baby kittens, pregnant mothers and sick pets.”

GRAND PRAIRIE HOUSING “FUTURE BUILDERS PROGRAM” BEST IN NATION High school construction trade students are building homes for the city of Grand Prairie in a recently awarded “best in nation” program. The city of Grand Prairie’s Housing and Neighborhood Services Department’s Future Builders Program was named the Best Neighborhood Program in the nation by Neighborhoods USA (NUSA), a national non-profit organization committed to building and strengthening neighborhood organizations.

A partnership between the city’s Housing and Neighborhood Services Department and Grand Prairie Independent School District, Future Builders uses Grand Prairie High School Career and Technical Education students to frame a new home that will eventually be sold to

an eligible Housing Choice Voucher Homeownership Program participant, allowing them to realize the American Dream and become a homeowner.

After the students frame the home, an independent contractor completes the construction process.

The homes are built through the federally funded HOME program, which requires the city to match funds. The students’ volunteer hours qualify for that match. High school teacher Scott Elmore was a general contractor for 23 years before he decided to pay it forward four years ago when he started the GPISD Career and Technical Education Construction Trade track. The program gives teenagers invaluable knowledge and experience toward a possible career.

Epic Central Park | 2960 Epic Place The City of Grand Prairie Parks, Arts & Recreation Department is hosting the first ever Epic Fest: Featuring Flight of the Monarch and the Cultures of Rotary, in Grand Prairie, Texas. This free event is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, September 21-22 at EpicCentral (formerly GrandCentral), the Grand Lawn Amphitheater, and surrounding Epic facilities to welcome everyone to the new park, highlight the Flight of the Monarch and educate the community on all diverse cultures and backgrounds that make up Grand Prairie. Along with our selected performers, the festival will celebrate the culture, nature and arts of Grand Prairie with a headlining performance from the Kumbia Kings, on Friday night. Be sure to enjoy a variety of Flight of the Monarch activities, live entertainment, educational components, multicultural performances on the Rotary International Stage, vendors, lawn games, food, and beer gardens.

Mike Lewis Park Pond | 2410 N. Carrier Parkway Come reel ‘em in on Saturday, October 6 at the Mike Lewis Park lagoon. This popular event is FREE to children 16 and under.

The lagoon will be stocked with catfish and ribbons will be handed out to each participant. There is no registration fee to participate in the Kid’s Fishing Day, but there will be an on-site sign-up table. A limited number of loaner rods and reels will be available on a first come first serve basis with a driver’s license or credit card deposit. Join us and find out how you can not only grow your own organic vegetables in the fall but also how to develop a plan to landscape your home. Need to know more about how to plant and prune trees? These classes will take the mystery out of Fall Gardening. Classes will be held on Wednesdays this fall season on September 5 and 12 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at the Grand Prairie Memorial Library, 901 Conover Drive. Susan Henson, Horticulturist and Arborist for the City will teach these informative classes to increase your increase you property values and reduce your grocery bill. Fall gardens take less water, weeding and insect control but most of all it is cooler!

Arbor Day in Texas is observed on the first Friday in November. Help us celebrate on November 2, 2018 from 10:00am to 12:00pm. GETTING YOUR CHILD INVOLVED IN JUNIOR GOLF

According to the National Golf Foundation, the leading golf industry organization, the game of golf has been growing steadily with an additional 2 million golfers a year. Of the 2 million, over 500,000 of these golfers are junior golfers (boys and girls under the age of 18)!

Why are kids getting involved in golf? With the controversy surrounding contact sports, such as football and soccer, more kids are finding that the game of golf to be their sport!

The professional golf tours are exciting to currently watch, with young players such as Jordan Spieth, Lexi Thompson, Ricky Fowler, and others making the game “hip” with the new generations. Golf is not the same game your grandfather use to play. It has become a multi-billion dollar business that welcomes players of all abilities to come out and enjoy the game.

If your kid wants to get involved in golf, here are a few tips how to get involved: • Your child will probably not be a professional golfer. Less than .0001% of golfers will ever play at a professional level.

• While golf scholarships are available, less than 15% of junior players will earn a scholarship to play college golf. Also, unlike football or basketball, rarely a full scholarship is given out for golf, and most are either a 1/4th to ½ scholarship.

• Start off with a lesson from a PGA Professional before getting golf clubs. PGA Professionals are dedicated to growing the game and have the experience to help beginning golfers start off with strong fundamentals and practice habits. If your child enjoys “hitting balls”, next try to find a golf program for them to enjoy.

• Here at Prairie Lakes G.C., we have several programs to get your kiddo going. Individual lessons are affordable and available throughout the week with one of our trained PGA Professionals. If they enjoy practicing and playing, the next step would join the Prairie Lake Monsters. Our junior team competes in team events in the PGA Junior League, and the Northern Texas PGA Team Golf events. It’s a low stress, fun filled event that helps players learn the game of golf from rules and etiquette, to basic fundamentals of the golf swing and how to play.

• Once kids have success in the Team Events, we encourage for them to continue by playing on the Northern Texas PGA Junior Tour, US Kids Events, and local individual junior tournaments.

• Golf is HARD! Keep the game fun and remember, golf is a journey to learn the game! Some players will grasp the game quicker than others. The more they play, the more they will enjoy the game, especially if they play with their parents!

Practice Your Shooting Skills Do you need to work on your game by increasing your arch on your jump shot? Or maybe you enjoy shooting baskets but wish you didn’t have to retrieve the ball after each shot? The great news is that The Epic will have a state of the art shooting system called the Shoot-A-Way 8000 gun! This system allows for the machine to pass the basketball to you from multiple locations on the court. It has different speeds of time between shots and has a scoreboard located on the machine to track your total shots.

All NBA Teams, a majority of collegiate teams, and many high schools throughout the country utilize the Shoot-AWay gun as an effective way to practice shooting. This system is just one of the many reasons The Epic will be unlike any other recreation, arts, and entertainment center in the country.

Our recording studio is centered around the Rupert Neve Designs 5088 Shelford Recording Console, the final say in large format studio desks. The coolest part of this studio (other than the Neve) is that we aren’t restricted to our 1,100 sf footprint. The studio is connected to The Epic Theater with a 32 channel copper-split, meaning we can track analog signal straight from the stage for live performances or place a drummer on the big stage for that huge, reverberant sound.

That makes this the best room in DFW for recording a live show!
