Hello, esteemed Voyagers of Grand du Texas! I was excited to see the turnout for the first virtual special Cheminot. I encourage anyone who was not able to attend to use the information contained within this issue to check out the recording. Each future issue of the TVN will have a spot for questions that the Locales bring up to Grand so that the question and answer will be available. If you have a question, you would like answered and posted in the next TVN, please put Locale Corner in the subject line. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Yule, Happy Bodhi Day, and any other personal celebrations. This is a great time to slow down in life and focus on family and humanity. One of the things that I mentioned in the special Cheminot was an idea about hosting a Veteran dinner. This could almost be thought of as a recruitment event but I think a knowledge share would be a more appropriate description. This is something that could be paired with other Veteran organizations to increase resources and help make the event more enticing. Let us not forget that active membership is more of a goal than paper membership. Active membership also doesn’t mean that the prospective Voyager should be asked to do take on a waterfall of areas. Get to know who they are and what makes them tick and then see what interests them. That is how you will get the most out of new members. As I travel around to meet with our Locales, I want to remind everyone that it is not an inspection or a visit to put anyone on the spot. I prefer not to interrupt your order of business during the Promenades and would prefer to sit and break bread somewhere. If there is a specific month that works best, please email me at chefdegaretexas@gmail.com. Be safe out there and please do not hesitate to reach out with questions, concerns, or ideas. We are at a pivotal time for the 40 & 8 in Texas and I call on all of you to think about our progression into the future and to strengthen our Society. God Bless all of you. Grand Chef Reiss held a Special Cheminot via Zoom on Thursday, Dec 14th. We had representatives from 8 of 10 Voiture Locales, which is the highest for quite some time. Thanks to those who were able to join us.

Membership Deadline is Here We are doing okay as a Grand Voiture but it could be better. We should be at 65.9% next week and the deadline for dues is December 31st. After that your dues are delinquent. Please renew your membership as soon as possible. We had a very good virtual Cheminot last week. Voyageur Q & A The only dumb question is the one you didn’t ask! Question: There has got to be a better way to do a monthly reporting cycle for the locales instead of one yearly report. Any
suggestions? Answer: Try using the Voyageur Activities worksheet. Of course, it is ideal if every member would bring a worksheet every month, but not realistic. You can make it a part of your Locale Promenade to discuss the events since your last promenade. The Locale Chef can also appoint someone for the locale and when there is an event your members participated in then keep track on the worksheet. Near the end of the year, it will be extremely helpful in completing ALL the reports. TEXAS VOYAGEUR NEWS Many of us look at the year in a couple of ways, most when the new cards come out and a new membership year begins and Locale and Grand elections - others right after Promenade Nationale when we have new leadership at the national level. So in that space of a couple of months in July and August we jump-start a new membership year, have our elections and of course do our reports. This gives those at the national level time to prepare for elections, appointments and of course awards. So essentially, Locale and Grand Correspondants have a small window to close out one year and begin another. Let's look at our duties. When the new cards are received, the Correspondant needs to immediately notify the Chef de Gare and the membership process should immediately begin. This of course starts a communication process with the membership and information on what means are available to pay dues. At this same time, the Correspondant is looking at all of the required reports and that process should already have been taking place. Some reports like Special Awards, Americanism and Ritual take longer to prepare and are almost a monthly endeavor. Other duties could be preparing promenade agendas, recording minutes, and perhaps even producing newsletters or other forms of communication. Not everyone has the desire or motivation to be the Correspondant - it's a lot of work and responsibility. So, why these comments...If you are wearing the Correspondant Chapeau and have accepted that responsibility, the entire leadership of your Locale relies on you, especially the Chef de Gare. The Correspondant is the position that in my opinion holds it all together - or should be. If you are a new Correspondant and still learning or a seasoned one but having internal difficulties - I am here as a resource and a sounding board to help and assist you - and others as well.
The Nationale and Grand Constitutions are pretty clear. But the reality is at times there are reasons Locales may be finding themselves in the precarious positions of failed membership despite the perceived annoying or pestering attention by those above us. They are just doing their job! We have to do ours! Correspondant you are at the heart of it. At this point, membership becomes the focal point of your duties. As a minimum, this requires close communication with your Chef de Gare and Commissaire Intendant. To those who have fallen behind, expect things to heat up and your membership more closely scrutinized. Seek help if needed! I look forward to seeing all of you at the 75th Boxcar Anniversary and Merci Boxcar / Cheminot and hope we have a good turn-out for the Central States Promenade. Central States is a huge endeavor and closely follows Merci Boxcar - so if your Locale is asked for help - we should all do our best to assist - even its attendance and an ad. I guarantee an abundance of National Officers at these events. Hard work is being put into them and should be supported. All the best for the holidays, a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!"
December 31st places us five months into our membership year and is of course a milestone regarding membership. We all hear about that dreaded date and consequences.

The 75th Anniversary events for the Texas Merci Boxcar will be held on Friday, March 22, 2024 beginning at 12:00 pm at the Texas Military Forces Museum, Camp Mabry, Austin, Texas.

The Texas Merci Boxcar artifact exhibit will be at 2:00 pm, the same day, at the Capitol Visitor Center, 112 East 11th Street, Austin, Texas.

The Grande Cheminot will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, March 23, 2024, at the Executive Learning Center, Wyndham Garden Austin, 3401 South Interstate 35, Austin, Texas. FORTY AND EIGHT NATIONAL COMMANDER VISIT: Chef de Chemin de Fer Frank Campo will be our special guest at these events!
