Fall 2017

From the Grand Chef de Gare Greetings Voyageurs Militaire I am very sorry for being out of pocket for a while. I visited family in the Midwest and after my return my brother has become seriously ill in Arizona. If I am unavailable feel free to speak to our Grand Chef de Train Renny Keagle who is an invaluable asset to our organization. I had the privilege of installing officers for the Grande Voiture du Oklahoma and they put on a 1st class event as always. So now it is on to the Fall Cheminot and I hope to see a good showing! God Bless America and the Forty and Eight.

Fall Cheminot Update US Representative Blake Farenthold is scheduled to be the Keynote Speaker for the 2017 Fall Cheminot in Corpus Christi on October 21st. Representative Farenthold is an active supporter of veterans in the area and we look forward to having him at our event. Think it is too far to travel! - El Paso has 5 Voyageurs attending – any more excuses! If you have not yet registered – the deadline is here. Contact Milton Sherwood (361-906-0246) to let him know if you plan to attend and get your registration in today!!!!! If you need a hotel room, David Knutson has an extra room on hold for a few more days. Contact him to get it!

Update on Ron & Kathy Wheeler We are very fortunate that Ronnie and Kathy Wheeler are home recovering after a very serious automobile accident as they were heading toward the Oklahoma Grand Promenade in July. Ronnie was in the hospital in Wichita Falls for several days and they were helped out by a fantastic woman veteran named Tammy Rice. Tammy is President of the Wichita Falls Police Association and was contacted by David Knutson for assistance after he learned of the accident. Tammy stepped up was a great help to the Wheelers. Kathleen Hedden of the Sheppard Enlisted Spouses Club also assisted the Wheelers while they were in Wichita Falls. Although they were in a strange town once word got out a very welcome and familiar face came to visit. Our Past Grand Chef de Gare and longtime Grand Correspondant Don Barfield was there to assist and was a welcome sight for Ronnie and Kathy. Thank you Don and many thanks all who sent their well wishes. Both Ronnie and Kathy are doing much better.

TEXAS DISASTER RELIEF WORK With the excellent response by the American Red Cross, FEMA and the many supporting charitable organizations involved it was a task to screen and identify families who had specific needs that could not be met via one of the other organizations. Red Cross and FEMA helped to identify two families in Austin and one family in Houston who had needs beyond their ability to assist. Voiture 175 in Austin stepped in and provided immediate clothing needs in the amount $443.76 to five children in one family and $151.46 for another child in a second family. Voyageur Tom Larsen of Houston Voiture 163 assisted a Houston area family in need with $409.39 being spent to help the children of that family and an additional $92.20 for the parents. Dad was in a wheelchair due to a stroke earlier this year. Reimbursement packages were submitted to the Ardery Child Welfare Trust Fund and all funds spent on the children were reimbursed to the locale or grand fund. Beaumont had identified a family in need who not only were displaced due to the flooding, but lost the father and older child in a car accident a few weeks later. This is an excellent program to take advantage of and although we may have been able to assist more families, many were well taken care of with the other emergency services in place. Housing was the most critical factor, but also one far beyond our ability to assist.

Charles W. Ardery Memorial Child Welfare Trust Fund The primary function of the Charles W. Ardery Trust Fund is to provide reimbursements of funds expended by a Voiture Locale or a Grande Voiture in meeting the emergent needs of children 17 years of age or younger. Emergent is defined as: A situation which has developed of a serious nature demanding prompt attention." This situation may arise out of natural disasters, i.e., floods, tornadoes, hurricane, fire, etc. Emergent cases are given prime consideration and are undertaken by the Local Voiture where established agencies, (Red Cross, churches, welfare, etc.), are unable to move rapidly or cannot act at all. However, this aid is not intended to replace or supplement that assistance which may be available through established agencies.
