The Athenian Kosmetai gallery in the permanent exhibition of the Sculpture Collection was selected as the ideal setting for the development of the museological concept. The world of the Athenian Gymnasia is also enlivened by a series of representative exhibits and the splendid bust of Antinous, the emperor’s beloved companion, who was deified after his premature death and venerated in the Gymnasia as a model of youthful beauty and vigour. The exhibition tour comes to a close with a visit to two more exhibition halls that show complementary aspects of Hadrian’s presence in Athens and create a parallel thematic tour to the rest of the museum.

The bronze disk that “hides” a bull, a hand and a garment – pieces of bronze statues that may be under huge stone masses, a result of landslide after an earthquake – the marble slab of reddish marble from a table, as well as parts of the bronze decorations of elaborate wooden furniture, await visitors to admire them. with water, as they are in the desalination phase of their conservation, and they give a new perspective to research, reviving the scientists’ expectations for upcoming great discoveries. The exhibition includes a total of thirtyseven objects, findings from the excavations carried out in the wreck site since 2014. Among them the gold ring from the 2016 campaign, pieces of exceptional glass vases, a set of clay vases from the ship’s cargo, but also pieces of the ship itself, all objects that help the reconstruction of the most famous ancient shipwreck. The findings are accompanied by photographic material and videos from the underwater research conducted using the latest technology.

DAY AND IN GREECE IT IS CALLED ‘PROTOMAYIA’ (LITERALLY MEANING THE FIRST DAY OF MAY). It is an urban holiday when people traditionally go to the countryside for picnics, to fly kites and to gather wild flowers. The custom of Protomayia has its roots in ancient Greece - it is a celebration of spring, nature, and flowers. Flower wreaths, typically made from handpicked wild flowers, will be hung on the doors of many homes in a way to welcome nature and all things good. Maios (May) the last month of Spring took its name from the Goddess Maja, a goddess who took her name from the ancient word Maia, the nurse and mother.
May, according to Greek folklore, has two meanings: The good and the bad, rebirth and death. The custom celebrates the final victory of the summer against winter as the victory of the life against death go back to the ancient years and culminate at the first day of May. This day was also dedicated to the goddess of agriculture Dimitra and her daughter Persephone, who on this day emerges from the underworld and comes to earth. Her coming to earth from Hades marks the blooming of nature and the birth of summer. Since May Day (Protomayia) corresponds with the peak of the flower season, flower shows and festivals are common and every major municipality will put on something to commemorate the day.

Performances are held annually in the months of June, July, and August. Athens Festival performances are presented between June 1st and mid to late July. Starting hours: 21:00 (unless stated otherwise) Epidaurus performances are presented every Friday and Saturday, from July to mid-August. Starting hours: 21:00 for Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, 21:30 for Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus. Various venues around Athens & Epidaurus 1 June – 18 August 2018
