s Grambling State University approaches its 125th anniversary, our journey continues to be defined by a bold vision that blends the power of tradition with the promise of transformation. The 2024–2025 academic year affirmed what we have long known to be true: when purpose and possibility converge, progress follows.

Across every facet of the Grambling State experience—from academic innovation and student leadership to research and community impact—we witnessed remarkable achievements that continue to position Grambling State University as a model of excellence in higher education.

Over the past year, our students once again proved that the spirit of this institution is one of excellence, resilience, and service. Through experiential learning and expanded engagement with the Center for Career and Professional Development, we served more than 1,750 students—a 133% increase in reach. Students participated in 98 professional development programs, completed 230 Gallup StrengthsFinder assessments, and secured over 1,000 items through the Career Closet, ensuring every Tiger is prepared to excel in professional settings and own every space they enter. Beyond the classroom, our scholars earned recognition on national stages through internships, pitch competitions, and research fellowships that underscore the university’s sustained investment in academic and professional growth.

Our faculty and staff continue to serve as the cornerstone of Grambling State’s success, driving innovation and shaping the next generation of scholars and leaders. Their research, creative pursuits, and professional distinction have elevated our standing among Historically Black Colleges and Universities while amplifying our influence across the academic and cultural landscape. Their impact extends well beyond the classroom, strengthening the institution’s capacity to grow, innovate, and create opportunities that will persist for generations.

During this academic year, we also strengthened our financial foundation and expanded the partnerships that sustain our progress. Grambling State secured more than $5.5 million in philanthropic investments, supported by a 12% increase in total investors and a 40% rise in individual investments. With 37 new endowed scholarships established and more than $512,000 in awards distributed, we continue to build pathways that make higher education more accessible and equitable for future generations.

The momentum we have built is visible not only in classrooms and communities but across the digital landscape. With 3.2 million unique visitors to gram.edu and a 92% increase in social media engagement, our story is reaching farther and inspiring greater connection and shared ownership within the GramFam—proof that excellence in action continues to define who we are and what we build together.

As we approach this historic milestone, the story of Grambling State University continues to unfold with purpose and pride.

ear Grambling State University Community, As Grambling State University approaches its 125th anniversary, we stand at a moment defined not by circumstance but by choice—the choice to build, to advance, and to believe in what is possible.

This year, we devoted our energy to widening the road to opportunity for every student who arrives with a dream and the determination to pursue it. We strengthened the environment where learning takes root, and leadership takes shape; a place where students stretch their thinking, test their ideas, and develop the confidence that carries them far beyond campus.

I have witnessed students discover new directions for their futures because someone here helped them recognize what was already within them. I have witnessed faculty and staff accompany them on that journey—not only teaching, but guiding, connecting them to experiences that change how they see themselves and the world. And I have witnessed partners, alumni, and investors walk alongside us with a belief that fuels our momentum and expands what’s possible for those we serve.

Throughout the year, we proved what happens when we remove barriers and make room for possibility—when students don’t just imagine what’s next but move toward it. Our work rests on a simple truth: a university should not only prepare students for the world; it should propel them into it.

We focused on creating direction instead of detours, access instead of obstacles, and opportunity instead of odds. The progress reflected in this report is more than the outcome of plans and programs—it is the living evidence of a community that believes in potential and builds the conditions for it to flourish. Across campus, ideas became initiatives, conversations became collaborations and hopes became tangible next steps. Each advance opened a new door and revealed a new path forged by imagination and courage.

As we approach 125 years, our task is not merely to celebrate our history but to extend it. We honor those who came before us by expanding the future for those who will follow. The world needs what Grambling State University produces: leaders prepared for complexity, committed to service, and confident enough to shape what does not yet exist. We are preparing them not only to succeed but to lead—not only to enter spaces but to transform them.

NURSING GRADUATES CONTINUE 100% NCLEX PASS RATE FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR A winning trifecta can often pay off in big dividends, and that’s something Grambling State University’s School of Nursing and College of Professional Studies is banking on.

For a third consecutive year, 100% of new nursing graduates — 13 in total — passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), a nationwide examination for the licensing of nurses in the United States.

“I think the fact our graduates have had a 100% passing rate for three straight years now says a lot,” said Assistant Professor Dr. Ashley Pierre. “I think it speaks to the faculty and staff here, but I also think it speaks to the resilience of Grambling as a whole. We did have a program at one point that unfortunately was closed in 2014. And then under the leadership of Dr. Meg Brown, our Associate Dean (in the College of Professional Studies) and President (Rick) Gallot at the time, the program reopened in 2015 with our first cohort that graduated in 2018.

“And I think that just speaks to the resilience of our rebuilding — starting over — and continuing to attract so many people to Grambling. I’m originally from California and I came all the way to Grambling just to attend the nursing program, and it spoke to me back then. I’m a 2009 Grambling graduate. So, I think it speaks to resilience and our ability to rebuild and again be successful with this new program in this new era.”

Pierre said leadership is a key part of the recent success of Grambling’s nursing program.

The faculty and staff are grateful for the support from GSU’s leadership, ULS, Louisiana Board of Regents, the community, and the members of GramFam.” Of the recent 13 nursing graduates who all passed the NCLEX on their first attempt, five were international students — one of the five was male, and the remaining eight were Black females “Two of the eight were outside of Louisiana — California and Mississippi,” Brown said. “Three of the international students were from Africa and two from the Islands. The faculty adjusted teaching methods as needed for the different learning styles.”

Pierre said it’s no secret that the nursing field continues to face a shortage here in 2024.

“Nurses are needed immensely right now,” Pierre said. “It’s a very important field. When I was in school there was a nursing shortage that there was a movement to get out of by 2020. But now it’s 2024 and there’s still a nursing shortage.

“Not only President Gallot before, but our new president, Dr. Martin Lemelle, has been amazing to help keep the school of nursing growing,” Pierre said.

“I think COVID showed a lot of things that needed to be taken care of. In the hospitals, I think it showed a lot of both green flags and red flags. I think it exposed how much nurses are needed. I think it exposed that there’s not enough nurses available.”

Dr. Meg Brown, Professor and Associate Dean of the School of Nursing said the recent success validates the program of study throughout the United States as well as internationally.

Pierre said digging deeper, the ongoing shortage also shows a shortage of faculty available to teach nursing students.

“The BSN program was accredited by the CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education) in January of 2021,” Brown said.

“The first class graduated from an accredited program in May 2021. Full state approval was granted by LSBN (Louisiana State Board of Nursing) in 2022.

‟There were barriers to starting a new program with GSU seemingly down for the count with little hope of having a BSN program. The goal was to be like the phoenix rising from the ashes.

“We have to have a certain amount of faculty to enroll a certain number of students,” Pierre said. “If we don’t have that, then we’re unable to admit bigger classes due to the nursing faculty shortage.

I think that’s also something that has to be looked into.”

Pierre also said the nursing shortage might affect minority communities even more than others.

“At Grambling we’re striving to produce the best and put out the best because there is such a shortage,” Pierre said. “And I think that for an HBCU, it’s very important because there’s such a high disparity in minority communities who are sick. So, I think putting our students from an HBCU does help kind of decrease that health disparity that is really, really seen in the minority community.”

GRAMBLING STATE STUDENTS STRIVING TO BECOME STRONGER THROUGH SELF-KNOWLEDGE

GRAMBLING STATE EXPERIENCES GROWTH IN SIZE, DIVERSITY OF FRESHMAN CLASS

February 2024, 12 university representatives — six students and six faculty/staff members — participated in the first HBCU CliftonStrengths certification class. This was just the beginning of their journey.

CliftonStrengths, formerly known as Clifton StrengthsFinder, is an online assessment tool that helps people identify their natural talents. The assessment is based on decades of research by Donald O. Clifton, who studied human behavior and identified commonalities in positive characteristics. These commonalities are distilled into 34 themes, or talent categories, that represent what people do best. The assessment measures the intensity of a person’s talents in each theme and provides a report that ranks their dominant strengths.

Grambling State University experienced a steady increase in Fall 2024 total enrollment, reaching 5,150 students, continuing the university’s upward growth trend. This represents a positive improvement from Fall 2023, when enrollment stood at 5,114, and Fall 2022, when the total was 5,070.

Of particular note is the impressive growth in the number of FirstTime Full-Time Freshmen, which surged to 1,013 students this semester, up from 914 in Fall 2023 and 819 in Fall 2022. This rise reflects the institution’s ongoing efforts to attract new talent and foster a welcoming academic environment for incoming students.

The six Grambling State University faculty/staff and six Grambling State University students participated in a one-day CliftonStrengths session that focused on fostering a strengths-based culture at Grambling State University, where each individual’s unique contributions are recognized and valued.

Representatives from Gallup Inc. and Thurgood Marshall College Fund led the group through various exercises to deepen their understanding of each talent theme. The attendees learned how to identify and leverage their strengths in different contexts through role-playing scenarios, group projects, and individual reflection periods. In the afternoon, the focus shifted to coaching techniques.

The second step was completed by participating in “HEROES— HBCU’s Embracing and Retaining Our Everyday Strengths!” the inaugural HBCU CliftonStrengths certification class. Having successfully completed the 4-day session, a graduation ceremony was held and Jim Clifton, the son of CliftonStrengths founder Don Clifton, served as the commencement speaker.

The Fall 2024 freshman class was also the most globally diverse in recent years, with nearly 200 students hailing from 17 countries. This increase in international students highlights Grambling State’s growing appeal as a top destination for education among students around the world.

“We are committed to the persistence and excellence of Grambling State University as the premier HBCU,” said University President Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr. “The increase in new freshmen and our diverse student population reflect the hard work of our faculty, staff, and partners who strive to make GSU a destination for education and leadership development.”

Dr. Gavin Hamms, Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management, also expressed his enthusiasm for the new class.

“I am deeply proud of this year’s remarkable enrollment growth,” Hamms said. “The diversity and talent represented in the incoming freshman class reinforce the strength of Grambling State University’s academic offerings and its global reach. This increase is a testament to the university’s appeal and the caliber of experiences cultivated here.”

The goal for GSU President Dr. Martin Lemelle Jr. is to have all GSU students and faculty staff members participating in the CliftonStrengths program.

DR. ROSHUNDA BELTON-CARDOZA TAPPED FOR PROVOST ACADEMY Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Associate Dr. Roshunda L. Belton-Cardoza was selected as part of the 2024 cohort selected by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) to participate in its 2024 Becoming a Provost Academy (BAPA).

The yearlong leadership development program, which is offered in partnership with the American Academic Leadership Institute (AALI), will take place from July 2024 to July 2025. Programming kicked off this week at the AASCU 2024 Summer Meeting for Academic and Student Affairs Leaders in Denver.

Ezelle earned her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art with a concentration in Drawing from Louisiana Tech University in 2008.

She added a Master’s of Fine Arts degree in Painting from the New York Academy of Art in New York City.

“I have always known I wanted to be a teacher, after having the great privilege of working with so many great art professors — such as local legends here in north Louisiana: Karen Sharp, Kathy Vellard, and Peter Jones,” Ezell said. “What I didn’t realize is how much I would learn every day from my students. I love the ideas they come up with because they’re always approaching studio problems from a very different perspective than I would.

“Most of my painting students come with an established vision of what they want to create, and it’s my great privilege to show them how to break down the steps to achieve that goal. The more ambitious they are, the better! And the more unique and specific to them, the more powerful the work is.”

BAPA offers a rich experience designed to prepare seasoned academic affairs administrators to be effective and successful provosts.

Dr. Belton-Cardoza earned her M.A. in History with a focus in Ancient History and a B.A. in History, and a Ph.D. in History, specializing in British Intellectual History. She earned her M.A. in History with a focus in Ancient History and a B.A. in History.

She has received various honors throughout her academic career, delivered conference presentations, and published peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and is looking forward to the BAPA program will make her leadership skills even stronger than they already are.

VAPA FACULTY MAKING HER MARK IN NELA FOR CREATIVE WORKS Grambling State University Associate Professor of Painting Emily Ezell has made a name for herself as one of the region’s rising artists, and her canvas recently worked its way into Shreveport, Louisiana, where some of her work is currently on display.

“The Process” exhibit at Artspace in Shreveport, Louisiana, showcases the creative journeys of each artist, revealing the initial sparks of inspiration and the developmental phases leading to their final artwork.

“The artworks are meant to be celebratory revels in a world I’ve built where liberation and pleasure are the noblest pursuits. It is a way for me to indulge and play in my perfect dream world.”

SCHEXNIDER TALKS PAST, FUTURE AT FOUNDER’S DAY CONVOCATION Honoring those who overcame challenges in the past while also looking toward uncertainties in the future was the focus of keynote speaker Dr. Alvin J. Schexnider as Grambling State University held its annual Founder’s Day Convocation. Schexnider, a 1968 Grambling State graduate and former executive vice president and interim president at Norfolk State University began by paying tribute to the tradition of excellence established by Grambling’s Founder’s and continued by current GSU President Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr.

‟ Rest assured that at some point in the future, the governor and the legislature will face the harsh reality of Louisiana’s capacity to support all of its colleges and universities.

ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT INSPIRES PROBLEM SOLVING, INGENUITY DURING HIGH SCHOOL DAY EVENT It all happened on the Grambling State University (GSU) campus February 2025, as 90 high school students from across the region attended and competed in the 24th Annual Clayton A. Wiley Engineering Week High School Day. The theme of this year’s Engineering Day was “Design Your Future!” The attending students from Math, Science, and Technology (STEM) classes at Arcadia, Gibsland-Coleman, Lincoln Preparatory, and Simsboro high schools participated in onsite competitions including Bridge Design and Building Project Computer Activities, Drone Flight Activities, and Mechanical Puzzles.

COMPUTER SCIENCE HEAD SHARES GOOGLE ENCRYPTION RESEARCH AT INTERNATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES CONFERENCE

Rawal discussed a pair of papers he’s authored as he appeared at the 15th International Conference on Computing, Communication and Networking Technologies) ICCCNT is a premier IEEE conference organized at IIT-Mandi, India.

Dr. Rawal said his appearance at the international conference will hopefully spread knowledge of GSU’s Science and Digital Technologies programs across the globe.

The two papers Dr. Rawal wrote and discussed during the conference were titled “Quantum and AI-Enhanced Digital Twin

Dr. Rawal said the goal of his papers and conference appearance was to create a unique handshake (authentication procedure RLP protocol) and security (cryptography) mechanism to enable secure communication across several cloud platforms.

“IIT and NIT are two of India’s most prestigious university systems, as well as internationally recognized educational institutions,” Dr. Rawal said. “Our goal is to collaborate with these two institutes to foster AI and quantum computing initiatives for all of our partner institutions.

In 2009, GSU’s Child Development Center closed due to a lack of sufficient funding, but monies from the Ascend at the Aspen Institute’s Black and Native Family Futures Fund and a $2 million grant from the U.S. The Department of Education helped return the facility to operation on the Grambling State campus.

Grambling State University graduate Henry Whitehorn, Caddo Parish’s first Black sheriff, talked about the power and responsibilities of “We the People” as he served as keynote speaker for GSU’s Constitution Day Observance

The Department of Education grant, known as the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) grant — was awarded to GSU to develop comprehensive support strategies for student parents, including childcare services.

Grambling State University President Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr. is a product of the Child Development Center and expressed his pride at the facility’s reopening.

“We celebrate little tigers and encourage them to become future Tigers and come to Grambling State University and explore the career and life of their dreams,” Lemelle said. “We’re excited about the child development center and its rebirth and what it means for our community, what it means for the ecosystem of our students and parents, and thinking through the articulation of the possibilities.

“It begins with three powerful words — ‘We the People.’ And these words are not just an introduction, they are a profound declaration of the principles that bind us as a nation. ‘We the People’ signifies the power of governance that lies in the hands of a few but is in the collective will of many.”

Whitehorn said the Constitution is a reminder that our democracy is built on a foundation of inclusivity, equality, and justice for all, but that while it is honored and revered, its historical shortcomings must also be acknowledged.

“When the Constitution was written and ratified, it did not provide for protections for African Americans and women, and this

“Our goal is to produce readers by the age of 4,” Lewis said. “We will be able to accomplish this goal because of the wonderful ecosystem we have at Grambling State University. We have support from the (FCS) department, the department which the center is housed within.

“We have early education majors who are doing their work study in our childcare center,” Lewis said. “And we expect to expand on that. Our goal is to teach the whole child so that in secondary school education, we want to expose them to the early stages of human development so that they become not only better educators but better parents in the long run.”

“We are committed to providing high quality childcare and education for our little tigers. We are so proud of the fact that the teachers at the center are graduates of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences."

COLLEGE OF BUSINESS NATIONAL PITCH COMPETITION WINNERS Meet Team Scroll Door, champions of the 2025 National Business Plan competition that took place April, 2025 in Atlanta, GA. The team wins a $15,0000 scholarship and an invitation to compete in the international competition. The program provides entrepreneurial experiences to students and helps them apply all their knowledge in a fast-paced business environment. HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS LEARN CYBERSECURITY, CYBERTHREAT ESSENTIALS AT COMPUTER SCIENCE CAMP July, 2024, Grambling State University’s Department of Computer Science and Digital Technologies successfully concluded the first of three summer camps focused on cybersecurity and cloud computing fundamentals.

The four-day camp held last week saw 24 high school students — a mix of sophomores, juniors and seniors — from across the region participating in the immersive program, which exposed them to the world of cybersecurity through interactive lectures, hands-on experience, and interaction with current university students.

“They learned the basics of staying safe online and also what cloud computing is so that they get sort of a teaser for when they decide to go to college,” said Camp Director Dr. Dileon Saint-Jean, a lecturer in GSU’s Department of Computer Science and Digital Technologies.

“Students gained valuable practical skills through exercises that simulated real-world cyber threats and learned how to defend against them,” Saint-Jean said. “In addition to technical skills, the camp also emphasized the importance of cyber hygiene and staying safe online.

The camp culminated with a presentation by groups of students on a topic covered during the camp in an effort to both reinforce the content and develop their presentation skills.”

LOUISIANA SPORTS HALL OF FAME PROFILE: ELLIS STANDS ALONGSIDE GRAMBLING’S GREATEST, MAKING DEEP IMPACT FAR BEYOND COMPETITION Some great athletes are born to be that way based on God-given talent that can be improved on with a solid work ethic, sheer determination and love of the game.

But it can sometimes work the opposite way for great coaches, who don’t always have great careers as athletes but become great coaches based on the same kind of God-given talent combined with a solid work ethic, sheer determination and love of the game.

Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2024 inductee Wilbert Ellis was one of those types of coaches. Ellis spent 30 seasons as Grambling’s head baseball coach after serving the previous 13 as an assistant under Ralph Waldo Emerson Jones.

Ellis retired in 2003 after posting a 743463-1 record with three Southwestern Athletic Conference titles, five SWAC Western Division crowns and three NCAA Tournament appearances.

He was inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame in 2011 and American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2007. Now, he joins the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.

Those coaching credentials warranted strong consideration for LSHOF induction, but what sealed the deal, and made Ellis even more worthy was what he’s done out of a baseball uniform.

“Throughout his life, as a coach and in many ways since then, Wilbert Ellis has been a tremendous representative of our state and his beloved Grambling State University,” said LSHOF chairman Doug Ireland. “Our selection committee believes he is the ideal person to be the second winner of the Ambassador Award as a man who has been nationally prominent in his field while constantly benefiting Louisiana through words and deeds. Coach Ellis has bolstered our state’s identity and its well-being.”

Ellis is nationally regarded as one of the country’s finest representatives of college baseball, beloved by Grambling alumni for his expansive yet now unofficial, longstanding role at the university.

Ellis was instrumental in the establishment of the Eddie G. Robinson Museum in Grambling, and the school’s Grambling Legends sports hall of fame. He still conducts baseball clinics for kids in Lincoln Parish and elsewhere, and serves as an NCAA Regional site supervisor.

It all began when Ellis was a youth in Ruston, organizing games and serving as a player/coach.

“For most young kids, that early love for athletics means they want to play the game for the rest of their lives — that was never my path,” Elis said. “I already knew when I was young I wanted to be a coach. It all started in those little league teams when me and my friends would form a team ourselves and if we didn’t have an adult with us, I’d often be the coach. And since I was 9 years old, I’ve never stopped coaching.”

“I was out on the road recruiting in Shreveport, when I stopped by the state fair to see a friend,” Ellis said. “That friend asked me if I’d seen the local newspaper, where an article said I’d been named the next head coach of Grambling State and right there in the middle of that state fair, I got down on my knees and thanked my Lord and savior Jesus Christ because I knew God had fulfilled my dream.”

That dream included helping nearly 50 players he and Jones coached at Grambling go on to earn professional contracts.

“I feel grateful for the opportunity to touch the lives of all of those players’ lives and all the others, whether they played pro ball or not,” Ellis said. “All those players who wore the Black and Gold made this possible. Without them, all of these honors and accolades would never have happened.

In 2015, the Ruston-Lincoln (Parish) Chamber of Commerce presented Ellis with the 2015 Robert E. Russ Award, which is the highest award that is given for community impact in Ruston or Lincoln Parish, and in 2021 Ellis received that year’s Bill Best Humanitarian Award from the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce.

And in 2022 Ellis was inducted into the Louisiana Justice Hall of Fame in Baton Rouge for his proactive approach in working with youth conducting clinics teaching hardball skills at the same time as offering instruction on the importance of life skills such as staying in school and completing their educations, staying away from drugs and alcohol and becoming productive citizens upon entering adulthood.

“All I’ve wanted to do since I was young was lead coach others in all phases of life and with his grace the Good Lord has granted me with that honor, just as the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame is granting me this upcoming honor. Being honored and joining all the great athletes, baseball coaches and players from Louisiana, the state I’ve always lived in, is incredibly thrilling and rewarding. It’s been a good life for this kid who coached on the east end of Ruston.”

DR. CORDARA HARPER NAMED TO YAMAHA’S 40 UNDER 40 LIST FOR MUSIC EDUCATION EXCELLENCE

Grambling State University’s Henry Dyer was inducted into the Black College Football Hall of Fame as a member of the 2025 Class.

Dyer was an All-American fullback for Grambling State. He was GSU’s first documented 1,000-yard rusher and was named first-team All-SWAC from 1963-65. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 1966 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams.

Dyer was among six inductees in the 2025 class that includes Rashean Mathis (Bethune-Cookman University), Jacquay Nunnally (Florida A&M University), Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (Tennessee State University), Jay “Sky” Walker (Howard University) and Coach Fred “Pop” Long (Wiley College).

The Class of 2025 was honored at the 16th Annual Black College Football Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, and recognized at halftime of the Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl.

LET US DREAM CONFERENCE AT GRAMBLING STATE PROMOTES UNITY AND CULTURAL COMPETENCE Held at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center, the Let Us Dream Conference attracted students, educators, and community leaders to Grambling State University, fostering discussions on social justice and community empowerment.

The conference featured panel discussions with thought leaders and community advocates who are making a difference, along with networking opportunities and cultural performances.

Deputy Sheriff Gary Guice of the Morehouse Parish Sheriff’s Office delivered an inspiring address about the Dream Program, which aims to help overlooked students discover their worth and potential. He emphasized the importance of mentorship and giving back to the community.

Guice said, “The Dream Program gives them the chance to discover their worth and learn that they have something important to contribute, not only to their families and schools but to the world at large.”

“We help them identify their ambitions, whether it’s catching up in reading or being the first in their family to graduate high school,” Guice said. “These are the children who will one day attend Grambling State University or Louisiana Tech and make a difference in Louisiana.”

Dr. Cordara Harper, a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music Education and Choir Director at Grambling State University, was named to Yamaha’s prestigious 2025 “40 Under 40” Music Education Excellence list. Recognized for his innovation, leadership, and dedication to student success, Dr. Harper stands as the only Black male educator from an HBCU to receive this honor.

With Black men comprising just 2-3% of college and university professors nationwide, Dr. Harper’s achievement highlights the critical impact of representation and excellence in music education.

A Memphis, Tennessee native, Dr. Harper teaches applied voice, conducting, music education, and musicology, shaping the next generation of musicians and educators. His leadership extends beyond the classroom as an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America.

This recognition from Yamaha adds to an already distinguished year for Dr. Harper. He and his close colleague, Prof. Coty Raven Morris, were recently Grammy-nominated music educators, further underscoring their influence on the field.

For aspiring educators, Dr. Harper offers three key pieces of advice:

The Distinguished 10 (D10) award was created to honor ten alumni who have demonstrated excellence in their industry and ​community. Through their personal and professional achievements, these ​ remarkable individuals exemplify outstanding leadership in business, research, p ​ ublic service, and/or philanthropic endeavors.

A key highlight of the ceremony was the establishment of a $10,000 endowment in the name of the Distinguished 10. Vice President of University Advancement and Innovation Brandon A. Logan announced that this endowment will serve as a foundation for future classes to contribute, ensuring ongoing support for Grambling State students.

“What this novel class did was establish a $10,000 endowment in the name of the Distinguished 10. The expectation is for every subsequent class to contribute to this endowment so that we can continue to fund the futures of our students.

“So next year when we return, one added element will be recognizing our first honoree of the Distinguished 10 endowment.”

Grambling State President Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr. expressed his pride in honoring this year’s D10 class.

“We are an institution born of leaders who were born of leaders,” Lemelle said. “And we continue to build. We’re building capacity, we’re building futures and we’re certainly building on the legacy that is Grambling State University.

“From Mr. James Bradford to my classmate Levicy Crawford, this Distinguished 10 class is phenomenal.”

In his closing remarks, Logan referenced Grambling State’s partnership with Gallup® and announced that the proceeds from the event would be used to cover the cost of their StrengthsFinder assessment for students.

“Through this strategic partnership, we’ve been able to grant every student the opportunity to take a comprehensive assessment of their strengths so that they have a better understanding of who they are and how they can contribute in industry.

“And so, all of today’s proceeds are going toward this partnership that we can invest singly to every student at Grambling State University. This partnership yields a $15 dollar investment in every student but a lifetime of opportunity to realize their potential.”

MASTER P ENCOURAGES GRADUATES TO PURSUE THE FUTURE WITH PURPOSE DURING COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS

“Think about it. A lot of people have given four or five years to incarceration. Y’all gave it to education. A lot of people ask why people celebrate when they get out of being incarcerated. We’re going to celebrate the ones that graduate college. This is what I love to see.”

Start anew and forge forward to change the future was the message presented to new Grambling State University graduates by rap music and business mogul Dr. Percy “Master P” Miller during Fall 2024 commencement exercises.

“There have been trials and tribulations, ups and downs, early mornings and late nights studying to take a test or complete an assignment, and it all led up to this moment,” Miller said. “So y’all give yourselves a round of applause.

GSU conferred 365 degrees during the fall graduation ceremonies with business management major NaToria Tarrant of Lancaster, Texas, earning valedictory honors after posting a 3.88 grade per average during her undergraduate career.

As he spoke to start his second graduation ceremony as GSU president, Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr., called the occasion a day wrapped in love.

“Not just the fleeting, feel-good kind of love, but the deep, abiding love that carries, uplifts and transforms,” Lemelle said. “It’s the kind of love that (poet) Nikki Giovanni so beautifully described when she said, ‘Love means nothing unless we’re willing to be responsible for those who love us as well as those who we love.’ And oh how those bonds have abounded to bring us to this moment.

“It reminds us that love is when you choose to be at your best when the other person is not at their best. I know that all of you are always at your best, organized, prepared and punctual for every class.

From just talking to a few of you, some of you needed that extra love and grace from your professors to make it to this day. GramFam, that’s love in action, and the reason you are here.”

Beginning his keynote speech, Miller stressed to the graduates that while they can’t change the past, they can greatly affect the future as they move on to their next endeavors in life.

“Education is so important, and I love that we can change, we can grow,” Miller said. “Today is about change. Today is about being all you can be. I’ve been through everything you could think of. I’ve seen it, I’ve been there and when I look into your eyes, I realize why. We’re about to be on time.

Miller said that with their diplomas, the graduates have been prepared to take on the world.

“I want y’all to know today is a blessing, and now it’s time to go out and show the world that all of your hard work was worth it. Grambling State University, where everybody is somebody, graduates of 2004 — congratulations. This moment is a result of your dedication and determination. You made the sacrifices, you stayed pushing forward despite the obstacles I know all of y’all had.”

“Alumni like Erykah Badu, Doug Williams, Willis Reed and so many others have walked these grounds,” Miller said. “Let’s celebrate Denise Young Smith, who went from being a Grambling student to being a top executive at Apple. And now she dedicates her life to making a difference for the next generation.

Also Mr. David Aubrey, who turned dreams into reality in becoming a top executive at AT&T. “And let’s not forget Earl Stevenson, who came from the Bay area, went to Grambling and became one of the most sought-after entertainers in the world. Let’s give it up for E-40. Class of 2024, I can’t wait to see how y’all are going to leave your mark on the world. Y’all are going to be great.”

Miller told the graduates that they earned their degrees not by luck or accident, but because of the choices they’ve made — their consistency and their discipline.

“One day, when you’re running major corporations and you’re building your own companies and brands and taking care of your communities and leading your families, remember the investment you made in yourself in your education,” Miller said.

“Class of 2024, remember this — today is not the destination, it’s only the beginning,” Miller said. “I leave you with Proverbs 4.67: Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.”

Then he explained why he did so.

“Wisdom is supreme,” Miller said. “As I look into the eyes of these visionaries, I see that you guys are on a mission. When you look into the mirror, just know you are your only competition. Whatever you can dream of, you can make it come true. Just have a plan and a purpose. Do what you love, operate with integrity and hold yourself accountable. Never abandon your dream and always be brave.

The future is yours. It’s in your hands. Now go show the world what Grambling [State] greatness looks like.”

NATORIA TARRANT NAMED VALEDICTORIAN OF FALL 2024 GRADUATING CLASS Grambling State University named NaToria Tarrant the valedictorian of the Fall 2024 graduating class.

Tarrant earned the distinction with a GPA of 3.88 and graduated with a degree in Management.

Hailing from Lancaster, Texas, Tarrant is the daughter of Lisa and Randy Tarrant. Her academic journey has been marked by consistent scholarship support, which she has leveraged to achieve her goals.

“I have been fortunate to be a consistent scholarship recipient throughout my academic career,” Tarrant said.

Tarrant’s involvement in campus organizations reflects her dedication to leadership and community service. She is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Grambling State University Cheerleaders, and the Earl Lester Cole Honors College. Additionally, she is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, the International Business Honor Society.

GRAMBLING STATE’S FIRST CALL ME MISTER® GRADUATE CONFERRED DURING FALL 2024 COMMENCEMENT Ja’Deric Talbert was one of more than 300 new graduates to receive their degree from Grambling State University. But among all of those graduates, Talbert will be one of a kind.

That’s because Talbert will be the first graduate from Call Me MiSTER® (Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) program at Grambling State, an initiative striving to increase the pool of available teachers from a broader more diverse background, particularly among the State’s lowest-performing elementary schools.

“Growing up, I didn’t always see teachers who looked like me, especially Black men. I had about three that I can recall,” Talbert said. “I knew that representation mattered, and I wanted to be that person for students who needed to see it. When I heard about Grambling State University launching the Call Me MiSTER program, it felt like a perfect fit.

“CMM provided a purpose bigger than myself — it was a mission to address the lack of diversity in the classroom. Becoming the first MiSTER at GSU was humbling. It was a chance to set the tone, build something lasting, and pave the way for others to follow.”

GSU Associate Professor Dr. George Noflin started the Call Me MiSTER program at Grambling State and recruited Talbert to be the program’s first students.

While serving as a teacher, Talbert said he plans to continue being a student with the ultimate goal of obtaining a doctoral degree.

“Call Me MiSTER has been a huge influence on my desire to pursue a doctorate,” Talbert said. “The program taught me to think big and to see myself not just as a teacher but as an innovator and leader in education. I’d love to one day lead a CMM program and continue its legacy."

“My journey has been one of purpose and passion, and I hope it shows others that the work we do as educators truly matters. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.”

GAP FUND SURPASSES $1M MILESTONE AT 2024 KICKS BALL GALA Amid the elegant atmosphere in the grand ballroom of the Hilton New Orleans Riverside, the 2024 Kicks Ball Gala presented by adidas unfolded as a night to remember. Held during Bayou Classic Weekend by the Grambling University Foundation, the black-tie event experienced a near 40% increase in attendance.

The most notable achievement – the GAP Scholarship Fund surpassed $1 million in funds raised since its inception – and it happened in mere minutes.

“It really just spoke to the environment that we’re creating,” said Brandon A. Logan, Executive Director of the Grambling University Foundation. “It’s a connected ecosystem of philanthropists that are interested in the direction that we’re taking.”

The moments leading up to the start of the event were a curated display of elegance, music, and celebration. VIP guests gathered at the exclusive patron party sponsored by Diageo while other guests enjoyed experiences in the Chemin Royale foyer that included the return of the custom adidas branded wall featuring the iconic Grambling-branded Crazy 8’s, providing a memorable photo opportunity and enlarged prints of other Grambling State footwear and each award honoree. Portraits with renowned New Orleans photographer Tyler Roi added a personal and lasting touch, capturing the excitement that marked the beginning of a special night. When guests entered the grand ballroom, they were greeted by the musical talent of Ashanti the Mad Violinist.

Award-winning journalist and Grambling State alumnus Dalfred Jones served as the evening’s host. During his opening remarks, he honored Dr. Richard J. Gallot, Jr., tenth President of Grambling State for inspiring the event and congratulated him on his new role as President of the University of Louisiana System.

“We honor you for remaining authentic to your love for footwear and using it as a platform to galvanize a shared interest to empower deserving students to complete their education,” said Jones. “It’s a pleasure to have you with us tonight in your new role as President of the University of Louisiana System. Your leadership and resolve continue to inspire us all.”

New to the experience was the unveiling of the 2024 annual report, known as the State of Grambling. With the theme, “Excellence In Action,” Grambling State President Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr. gave remarks about the publication that were provided at each guest’s place setting.

“This document simply tells a story, our story,” said Lemelle as he highlighted stories contained in the document. “As you go through

this annual State of Grambling, read the stories but find yourself inside the pages and think about how you can make a contribution to Grambling State University.”

Honoring Impact The event continued with the recognition of exceptional individuals who embody the values and spirit of Grambling State University.

The Student Excellence Award was presented to Olivia Dyer, a senior Business Marketing major from Dallas, TX. As a 2024 White House HBCU Scholar, her dedication to fostering positive change on campus and within the community exemplifies her leadership and commitment to making a lasting impact.

Dr. Connie Walton, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Grambling State was honored with the Service Excellence Award for her unwavering leadership.

Dr. Walton’s exceptional leadership, including her role as Interim President, has been vital to the growth and success of Grambling State University. Her unwavering commitment to guiding key initiatives and ensuring academic excellence has left a profound impact on the campus community.

Turner Construction received the Community Changemaker Award, recognizing its outstanding contributions to Grambling State. The company has provided more than $150,000 in scholarships over the past two years and has hired four Grambling State students, making a profound impact on the university and the community.

Carlisha Robinson, Chief Customer Officer at Beyond, Inc., received the Business Excellence Award. A Grambling State alumna, Robinson has led transformative change within major brands like Overstock, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Zulily.

Her work continues to inspire the next generation of leaders.

GSU’S DOUG WILLIAMS HONORED AS LPB LOUISIANA LEGEND

A Million Dollar Moment Brandon A. Logan took the stage at the conclusion of a testimonial video where three GAP Scholarship recipients resonated with the impact of the fund. In his remarks, he outlined that since its inception, the GAP Scholarship Fund has provided financial support to 1,379 students, awarding more than $991,000 to bridge the gap between their resources and the cost of their education.

The average gift per student is $719— a sum that can make the difference between a student staying in school or having to leave due to financial hardship.

Less than five minutes later – over $10,000 was raised. The excitement of the moment was the capstone of the gala as guests prepared to experience a very special performance by Grammy Award-winning recording artist Babyface.

“This moment showed the continued investment from our community, their understanding of the importance of supporting the GAP Scholarship Fund for students who just need that extra push to get across the finish line,” said President Lemelle. “We’re thankful for the contributions from the GramFam across the Globe that made this happen for us today.”

With 95% of Grambling State students receiving some form of financial aid and 42% who are the first in their family to attend college, the importance of the GAP Scholarship Fund has never been clearer. The fund provides critical resources to help deserving students complete their registration and continue their academic journey. Surpassing this $1 million milestone ensures that even more students will have the financial support they need to thrive.

“We’re going to continue to build off the success [of this event],” said Logan. “I think the best days are still ahead of us.”

Legend is an accurate description of Williams’ status after his prestige was increased on May 1 as he was honored as part of the 2025 class of Louisiana Public Broadcasting network’s Louisiana Legends, which honors outstanding Louisianans who have distinguished themselves in a variety of disciplines including writing, art, entertainment, politics, public service and athletics.

In 1978, Williams made history by being selected 17th overall in the NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, becoming the first African American quarterback chosen in the first round. Later, he joined the Washington Redskins (now Washington Commanders), where he led the team to victory in Super Bowl XXII in 1988, becoming the first Black starting quarterback to not only win a Super Bowl but also earn MVP honors in that game.

“I think some of the things I’ve done off the football field, and continue to do, plays a part in it,” Williams said. “Grambling Legend, Black College Football Hall of Fame, the HBCU Bowl, all of those things played a part in it. It’s all about helping — whatever you do in the community to make a positive impact on people.”

“There’s two things I think I’ve done — three if you count being the first Black quarterback in the Super Bowl, but that would be No. 3 — that I’m especially proud of,” Williams said. “ I think the opportunity I had in 1993 to coach a high school (Northeast High in Pride, Louisiana, which is located a little northeast of Williams’ hometown of Zachary) and make an impact on those younger kids was the first big impact I was fortunate to be able to make.

We beat Peyton Manning (Newman High School) in the playoffs at Northeast High School.

“The other would be having the opportunity to coach at Grambling and replace a legend like Eddie Robinson. Those guys I coached at GSU, and seeing how they’ve gone off and what they’ve done with their lives to be successful and then come back and tell you thanks.

That’s an impact. The Grambling Legends, bringing guys back who deserve to be celebrated, that’s an impact. The Black College Hall of Fame is the same thing.”

Williams is also proud of the impact he’s made in founding the Legacy Bowl, which is more than a football game but instead an event looking to make an impact on not only the players involved in the game but on students from HBCUs across the country that converge on New Orleans to attend a job fair held in conjunction with the All-Star football contest.

SPRING 2025, LONNIE B. SMITH JR. CAREER FAIR LOOKS TOWARD FUTURE Grambling State University’s Center for Career and Professional Development showed it’s willing to take on the challenges of change and continue to forge into the future as it held the Spring 2025 Lonnie B. Smith Career Fair on March 20.

The changes to the latest GSU Career Fair including incorporating the new center-hung structure with four large 10’x23’ high resolution 3.9mm indoor video screens, holding its Candid Conversations as part of the event itself, including use of a 10’x18’ LCD screens on one of the end walls of the arena, and adding a photo booth for students attending the Fair to take professional headshots to add to their résumés.

Center for Career and Professional Development Assistant Director Daphne Tolliver said that 517 students were offered the chance to speak to representatives of 60 potential employment agencies during the Fair.

“We are thrilled with the strong turnout from both employers and students at our Spring 2025 Lonnie B. Smith Career Fair,” Tolliver said. “This year, we aimed to revamp the experience by incorporating informative preconference sessions from our partners, engaging panel discussions across various industries, and offering professional headshots for our students.

Last year, 12 university representatives — six students and six faculty/staff members — participated in the first HBCU CliftonStrengths certification class.

Four of those representatives — University Transformation Officer Dr. Larry Green and GSU students Amy Moody, Arianna Mosely and Ruqayya Stevenson served as the panelists for that CliftonStrengths panel discussion.

The second Candid Conversation featured a pair of GSU graduates, Higher Education Advisor Madison Johnson and Inventory Control Specialist Nicholas Williams talking about the “Real World: Life After College.”

GSU Vice President for University Advancement and Innovation Brandon A. Logan, Dean of GSU’s College of Business Dr. Derrick Warren, and Morgan Chase Bank Vice President of Communications and Community Engagement Latetao Hutchinson spoke on “The Future of Work” during the final Candid Conversation.

Logan talked about the importance of having an attitude of excellence.

“I think that when you consider achieving on the highest level, you have to determine what that highest level is for what you’re working on so that the attitude will translate to your behavior, and your behavior will then shape the outcomes,” Logan said. “I can assure you of one thing, when we have downsizes happening or any kind of shift in the marketplace, those individuals who have an attitude of excellence, and actions of excellence, they will also do better.

“Our commitment is to continually enhance the student experience, ensuring that it is always filled with exposure and opportunities for growth.”

There were three Candid Conversations held during the event.

The first focused CliftonStrengths titled “Achieving Self-Mastery Begins with Recognizing and Harnessing Your Strengths.”

CliftonStrengths is an online assessment tool that helps people identify their natural talents.

“So, if you can adapt that as a characteristic trait, everything you do has some level of performance and evaluation applied to it, people will remember you for your reputation of excellence. If you carry excellence in you in everything you do and hold that standard, I guarantee you will always be better for it.”

Warren stressed continuous learning throughout one’s life and told those in attendance that they should always be future ready.

“When I think about key skills, I have to think about skills that are future ready,” Warren said. “Regardless of what happens in the environment, that what happens in the government — who becomes elected, who becomes president, who becomes vice president or Speaker of the House — we have got to be future ready.

Warren said there are three specific skills that can help someone become future ready.

“One of those is cognitive skills — cognitive flexibility and critical thinking,” Warren said. “A second is digital and data literacy. We have to understand data is one of the world’s greatest natural resources. Our newest natural resource. We need people who know how to gather insights from that data and problem solve.

That’s a key skill that all of our students need to have.

“And the third skill, which is sometimes underestimated, is emotional intelligence. We’ve got to be able to get along with each other and to understand how different people work. We’ve got to be in touch with our mental, cognitive ability, because mental health is a key challenge in today’s society and on our college campuses specifically.”

The History Department at Grambling State University is receiving national recognition for its exceptional commitment to equity, inclusion, and career readiness. The department has earned two distinguished honors—the American Historical Association’s (AHA) Equity Award and the Essential Employability Qualities (EEQs) Certification from Quality Assurance Commons (QA)— affirming its dual focus on academic excellence and student success beyond the classroom.

The AHA Equity Award recognizes departments and institutions that demonstrate outstanding achievement in recruiting and retaining underrepresented groups within the historical discipline.

VAPA DEPARTMENT HEAD SELECTED FOR PRESTIGIOUS HAMBIDGE CENTER RESIDENCY Rodrecas Davis, Department head and professor for Visual and Performing Arts at Grambling State University, was named among the newest cohort of resident artists for the Hambidge Center. An acclaimed artist and arts administrator from the small town of Monroe, Georgia, the prestigious residency is both inspiring and instructive. Davis combined his visual arts and journalistic experience to provide both an academic and formal review of the arts at Grambling State University. Mr. Davis is a tenured Associate Professor of Art. At the intersection of creativity and academia, Davis stands out as a versatile figure whose contributions to the arts and education are both profound and impactful.

The Hambidge Center’s residency is highly competitive and stands as a beacon for artists seeking to expand their horizons.

With only 45 spots available out of 355 applications received globally. It is designed to nurture both the personal artistic pursuits and professional projects of its residents, offering a unique environment that encourages exploration and innovation. This dual focus resonates deeply with Davis’s vision of art as an essential component of human existence.

“The arts are integral to everything that is made of material,” Davis said, underscoring the pervasive influence of creativity in shaping our everyday lives.

Davis’s affinity for art was sparked in the unassuming halls of Monroe, Georgia. Growing up, he found inspiration in the vivid worlds of comics, cartoons, and album cover designs. However, it was in a sixth-grade art class led by a supportive teacher, Mrs. Adams, that his passion truly took root.

“The pivotal moment that spurred my creativity happened in the 6th grade,” Davis said.

The class, which met just before the final period of the school day, offered Davis and his classmates an opportunity to delve into artistic exploration, often at the expense of their Social Studies lessons—a trade-off Davis was more than willing to make.

This newfound freedom and encouragement to experiment with creative expression led Davis to contribute as an illustrator for his junior high school newspaper. These formative experiences laid the groundwork for his pursuit of advanced studies in art, culminating in both a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) and a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.). His academic journey was marked by a commitment to pushing the boundaries of his craft, setting the stage for a career that seamlessly blends artistic innovation with administrative leadership.

The path to securing the Hambidge residency was marked by a thorough submission process, requiring candidates to present a detailed account of their professional and creative achievements. Davis’s application, which included a curriculum vitae, an artist proposal, and a curated portfolio of his work, showcased his enduring commitment to the arts. His consistent creative output, coupled with his effective leadership in arts administration, played a significant role in his selection for this esteemed residency—a testament to his standing as a culture bearer and art administrator.

Receiving this fellowship is a significant milestone for Davis, who views it as both a personal honor and a broader acknowledgment of the diverse roles creatives often occupy.

TEAM ISHARA TAKES FIRST PLACE AT THE GOLDEN PITCH AND BIZTECH CHALLENGE GSU's Team ISHARA won first place at The Golden Pitch—a north Louisiana entrepreneurial and business development event in November, 2024.

In December, 2024 Team ISHARA also took first place at he BizTech Challenge held annually in conjunction with Bayou Classic Festivities in New Orleans. This comprehensive hands-on learning and mentorship program aims to build innovative ecosystems between university administrators, faculty, and students, and the public and private sector.

Grambling’s Team ISHARA earned $15,000 as first-place winners. Team ISHARA presented a “gamified recycling solution” that integrates smart machines in high-traffic areas to encourage sustainability by rewarding individuals for recycling.

Earning third-place honors for GSU was Team Amber Accessories, which created an innovative safety solution that embeds panic buttons into jewelry such as rings, earrings, and necklaces.

LIVING LEGACY: FIRST CLASS OF GRAMBLING STATE ALUMNI CELEBRATE 50-YEAR ANNIVERSARY Grambling State University rolled out the red carpet for its Golden Graduates, the Class of 1975, commemorating their 50th anniversary with a two-day celebration filled with nostalgia, remembrance, and inspiration. This momentous occasion, coinciding with the 2025 spring commencement ceremonies, served as a powerful testament to the enduring impact of a Grambling education.

The Class of 1975 holds a unique distinction as the first graduating class under the official name of Grambling State University, marking a pivotal moment in the institution’s history. This landmark anniversary provided an opportunity for the university community to reflect on its rich legacy while celebrating the achievements of those who helped shape its future.

This is a great idea, bringing graduates back for commencement and honoring them. Fifty years doesn’t seem that long, but it feels good.”

Cleo Scott Brown, a successful businesswoman and philanthropist, highlighted the importance of giving back to the institution that paved the way for her success. With a touch of humor, she pledged her continued support, Cleo said, “I needed to write you all the big checks since I hadn’t written it!” Her commitment to philanthropy serves as an inspiration to current students and fellow alumni.

Sheila Loeb, a trailblazer as the institution’s first female student government association president, radiated enthusiasm throughout the celebration. Recalling her time at Grambling, Loeb said, “It was a feeling of love. I was elated that the student body had that kind of confidence in me.” She encouraged current graduates to embrace challenges and pursue their dreams fearlessly, proclaiming,

Johnson said that Williams won a Super Bowl back in a time when racism was real.

Pastor Charles “CeeJay” Johnson invoked a number of Grambling State University legends as he served as keynote speaker of GSU’s “Honoring Our Legacy: Inspiring Future Generations” Black History Program Thursday morning inside T.H. Harris Auditorium.

Marcus A. Kennedy, Grambling State University’s Director Campus Activities and Student Engagement said that “Honoring Our Legacy: Inspiring Future Generations” wasn’t only a theme for the program but a call to action directed at all in attendance.

“Today we are celebrating the remarkable contributions of our ancestors, whose sacrifices and triumphs have shaped the world we live in,” Kennedy said. “Their stories remind us of the resilience, the strength and creativity that defines our community.”

During his speech, Johnson paid tribute to the late Grambling football coach Eddie G. Robinson on the legend’s 106th birthday.

“There was one man by the name of Eddie G. Robinson who was the legendary football coach of Grambling State University and was a man of faith and passion,” Johnson said. “He coached here for 57 years, and he transformed Black men into leaders both on and off the field.

“He didn’t let segregation or limited resources stop him from doing what God had called him to do. He was a man who had a greater plan. He was a man with faith, and it’s important for us to understand that, like Coach Robinson, we must trust God’s plan, even when that plan seems not to be working.”

Shortly later, Johnson recalled former GSU quarterback Doug Williams, who was not only the first Black quarterback to start in a Super Bowl but also the first to win MVP honors in that annual NFL championship game.

“You had a man on this campus named Doug Williams, and he is Black history,” Johnson said. “And the reason he’s Black history is because he was the first Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl.

“Well let me just say, it’s still real today,” Johnson said. “As long as you’re Black you’re going to have people jealous of you.

You’re going to have people that hate on you for no reason. But you have to understand that as long as God has called you and equipped you, you can do what the prophet Jay-Z said. And he said, ‘I may have 99 problems, but a hater ain’t one of them.’”

As he continued, Johnson went on to mention journalist Harris Faulkner and singer/songwriter Erykah Badu, who both attended Grambling before going on to make their own indelible marks on the world.

Johnson told the crowd they have to have hope — the kind of hope Grambling graduate and basketball legend Willis Reed had as he led the New York Knicks to a Game 7 win over the Los Angeles Lakers to win the 1970 NBA championship.

“Willis Reed was an NBA Hall of Famer who had hope (while) playing through pain and injury in one of the most famous basketball games in history,” Johnson said. “What I’m telling you is that in life, you’re going to be let down. In life you’re going to face pain. In life, you’re going to cry.

“In life, you’re going to want to throw in the towel. In life, you’re going to want to quit. In life, some of your oldest friends are going to get on your nerves. In life, your family just may be your problem. In life, your professors may not be your favorite teachers. In life, you’re going to have all kinds of difficulties. But you have to know just one thing — you have to keep going. And not only do you have to keep going.”

Johnson said people have to keep going because of the legacies left to them by God.

“God has called you to a legacy of excellence, a legacy of faith, a legacy of perseverance, a legacy of hope and a legacy of leadership,” Johnson said. “You must understand that you just can’t read Black history, you all have to make some Black history.”

GSU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Connie Walton presided over the ceremony, which was attended by numerous dignitaries from the state of Louisiana as well as across the country, including former Grambling State presidents Dr. Raymond Hicks, Dr. Leonard Haynes III, Dr. Cynthia Warrick, Dr. Willie D. Larkin, Rick Gallot, Walton, who served as GSU interim president in early 2024 until Lemelle took charge of the university in April.

The program opened with remarks from city of Grambling Mayor Alvin R. Bradley Sr., Louisiana Commissioner of Higher Education Dr. Kum Hunter Reed, Southwestern Athletic Conference Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland, Grambling University Foundation Chair Dr. Janet D. Barnes and Grambling University National Alumni Association President Dr. Tammy Richardson.

Richardson said the occasion marked the beginning of a new chapter of GSU’s legacy.

“Dr. Lemelle represents the very best of what Grambling stands for — excellence, leadership and a deep commitment to the success of our students and the community at large,” Richardson said. “He has the deep responsibility of carrying on the legacy of our founder, Charles P. Adams, and all the legends who led the esteemed institution after.

“Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for Grambling State University — a chapter filled with promise and opportunity. Under Dr. Lemelle’s leadership, we are confident that the university will continue to flourish, reach new heights in academic achievement, innovation and global impact.”

Reed pointed out that Lemelle has not only taken over the reins of his alma mater but the alma mater of his grandparents and parents as well.

“He knows the hopes, dreams and fears of his students,” Reed said. “He is here to support his faculty and staff as they pour into their scholars. His doors are open wide to collaborate with everyone and ensure student success, and he understands the power of telling the Grambling story across the state, across the nation, and around the globe to continue to promote all things excellent.”

Barnes called Lemelle a new contractor to lift Grambling State University to greater heights than ever before.

“Yes, he’s a dreamer,” Barnes said. “But look at his reality.

He dreamt, and now he is our president. Yes, he is young, but check out his bio, his curricula. Yes, this is his first time being a president. But I assure you as the Methodists say he’s been dipped, dunked, and baptized.

“He is president. This is just formality.”

in your hands. You’re like our parent. I became a parent in 2005, and you were still in the last days of your (undergraduate) education. You were the SGA president. I watched him graduate and later come back and work with President Gallot. And I remember meeting him at that time and thinking to myself, his guy is really something. This guy sees things that others don’t. And that’s the mark that I want to see in a leader. I want him to see things no one else sees and I want him to encourage us to aspire to reach it.

“And then I sat on his (presidential) search committee. And we saw some incredible people. But when we sat down and made our decision, and I can’t really reveal anything about all of that, you can see that the cream rose to the top and he’s here right now.”

The youngest current serving HBCU president in the U.S. Lemelle was named the president of his alma mater at the age of 39, exactly 20 years to the day of becoming SGA president. Not by chance, by choice. Dr. Martin Lemelle Jr. chose excellence.

As a Lemelle and as an alumnus of this illustrious university, I’m proud. Dare I say I’m ‘GramFam’ proud? And as a sign of support, I’m excited to establish the Lemelle Endowed Scholarship Fund with a personal investment of $50,000.”

Then came remarks from Lemelle’s “Village” — former GSU classmate and current President and CEO of Huston Tillotson University Dr. Melva K. Wallace, lifelong friend Mrs. Max Ferguson, family member Dannelle Lemelle Crowe and 13-year-old cousin Paityn Alexander Bibbins.

Crowe said the Lemelle Endowed Scholarship Fund will have an initial fee of $100,000 to encourage the same spirit of excellence among our students. To celebrate the legacy of our family, learning and leading at Grambling State University for generations, and to commemorate this moment.

Wallace urged “GramFam” to unite in support of GSU’s 11th president.

Bibbins gave the most memorable and inspiring remarks of the day, presenting a remarkably composed and thought-out speech sprinkled with touches of humor and love before becoming choked up at the very end in a show of sincere admiration and respect for her older cousin.

“It is time we get like the World Famed (GSU Marching Tiger Band) and become one band and one sound behind one president, Dr. Martin Lemelle,” Wallace said. “He belongs to us. He is our president, and we are proud.

“But I caution us. We cannot slack up down the road. We’re here today at the inauguration where we scream “Josana, Josana,” or Matin, Martin. Don’t let us lose five football games in a row and start yelling, ‘crucify, crucify!’

Wallace also added a little levity to the proceedings.

“Let me be the first to say that Martin is not perfect. He is sometimes too cerebral, annoyingly positive, tends to overwork, and unfortunately has a sincere appreciation and the discipline to maintain a vegan diet in the Creole country of Louisiana. Yes, you heard it from me, Dr. Martin Lemelle is not perfect, but he is perfect for this job.”

Crowe caught the attention of the audience with the announcement of an endowed scholarship in the Lemelle family’s name.

Formal Investiture Begins

The actual formal investiture ceremony itself then began, with Gallot’s role to give the official charge and presentation of the presidential chain of office.

During his investiture address, Lemelle thanked all Gramblinites who came before him.

But Gallot began by momentarily detouring off script by recognizing University of Louisiana Board of Supervisors members in attendance as well as other presidents from the ULS. University of Louisiana System President Rick Gallot (right) is pictured presenting the presidential charge to Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr. He felt he had good reason to do so.

“I really wasn’t planning to introduce them, I just needed to put a little space between me and ‘The Village,’” Gallot said. “Paityn is an impossible act to follow.”

And before returning to the “official script” of the investiture, Gallot had a special person he wanted to thank.

“As much as has been said today about (Lemelle’s) accomplishments, I will have to tell you that as I prepared to step into this role as he has done, there was one call I had to make to a certain business guy in Washington D.C. named Martin Lemelle, Jr. to ask if he would join me on this journey. I knew in my heart and in my spirit I needed someone like Martin to help us move Grambling State University forward.

“So as much as I guess I was the public face of the public success of this university over the last seven years, it would not have been possible without having him as CEO and executive vice president and CFO. So Martin, I want to thank you for making us successful over the last seven years.”

“We gather today to speak our vision, to build upon our foundation laid strong and true, brick by brick, by those who came before,” Lemelle said. “I stand before you both honored and humbled, grateful for the trust you have placed in me, grateful for the legacy that lifts us and for the hand that held us up when we needed strength, when we needed love, when we needed hope, when we needed to be reminded that we are the continuation of a powerful story — the next verse in a brilliant song.”

“We are visionaries, born of visionaries who were born of visionaries,” Lemelle said. “We speak today of a future where Grambling stands tall, a leader in education, innovation, and service. From a single building to a campus that spans acres, from a local institution to a global leader in education, we are Grambling, committed to operational excellence, student success, to innovation, and global engagement.

“From every graduate who crosses our stage, to every groundbreaking initiative we undertake, we are building a future that yes, honors our past, celebrates our present and prepares us for the limitless possibilities ahead.”

Investing In Education Beyond the Classroom Lemelle then announced the establishment of another family scholarship he has created.

“Today, I’m excited to announce a bold, new initiative anchored by my family that shows our commitment to expanding the horizons of our students and strengthening our impact globally,” Lemelle said. “We have established a global, experiential education endowment with a goal of raising $1 million over the next five years.

“This endowment, through the Grambling University Foundation, will support transformative learning experiences, both here and abroad, ensuring our students are equipped with the skills and perspective needed in a rapidly-evolving world. Together we will create pathways for our students that are not confined by the border of our campus but extend to the far reaches of the globe.”

Lemelle then asked the audience to see themselves in his vision.

“Your contribution, your advocacy, and your passion are what will turn this vision into reality,” Lemelle said. “Let us be bold in our giving, bold in our dreaming, and bold in our building for a future that knows no limits.”

KEYNOTE SPEAKER TABITHA BROWN ENCOURAGES GRAMBLING STATE GRADS TO CREATE THEIR OWN JOURNEY Follow God’s word and listen to your heart to create your own journey in life.

That was the message delivered to 420 new graduates by actress, author, and entrepreneur Tabitha Brown as she delivered the keynote address at Grambling State University’s Spring 2025 Commencement Ceremony.

GSU President Martin Lemelle, Jr. began the occasion by calling the commencement program a sacred celebration.

She said she returned to her forgotten dream and continued her journey in life on a path that returned her to Los Angeles in 2004.

While she and her family ended up in Los Angeles, she could only find work at Macy’s until eight months later, she learned that her mother had been diagnosed with ALS, so she returned to North Carolina off and on for three years to care for mom until she passed.

After returning to Los Angeles Brown finally found acting success, doing movies, infomercials and then giving birth to a son.

“This is an occasion not just marked by achievement, but anointed by purpose,” Lemelle said. “Today is a moment that is wrapped in something deeper than just celebration. It is wrapped in divine orchestration. A kind of harmony, a rhythm older than time itself.”

Lemelle also issued a charge to the new graduates.

“Today I ask you to go forth and love audaciously, lead unapologetically and never, ever stop fighting for your dreams, for your community, and for Dear Old Grambling,” Lemelle said.

That message was a harbinger of Brown’s speech to the graduates.

Brown, a native of Eden, North Carolina, talked of having dreams since she was a child that somehow end up coming true, even if in unexpected ways.

She spoke of her own journey — starting off her college career at the Miami International University of Art and Design before realizing she was born to act and perform and then trying to enroll at Columbia College in Chicago to major in performing arts before finding out due to outstanding loans for fashion school, she could not be approved for more financial aid.

Following her dream, Brown journeyed to California to try and get into acting before moving back to North Carolina, marrying her husband Chance and giving birth to a daughter.

But after a year, Brown said she awoke to God thunderously speaking to her, telling her that her current life was not the life he had planned for her. Later that day she received what she believes was a sign from God in the form of radio personality Busta Brown announcing on air he was looking for a cohost for a new show he was starting.

But then Brown fell chronically ill, suffering for 19 months before pleading to God, telling him, “If you can heal me, you can have me.”

Brown said she wasn’t healed in the moment, but I felt something, felt different, and that she had another dream in which God told her to start doing videos.

Shortly later Brown’s high school aged daughter told her she needed to watch a documentary her daughter had watched in school titled ‘What the Health” that encouraged a vegan lifestyle/ Deciding to try a vegan diet, Brown soon returned to good health.

That vegan lifestyle led her to becoming an ambassador doing videos for Whole Foods Market.

In 2020, listening to her daughter’s advice to try doing a Tik Tok video, Brown found herself “going viral,” and gaining millions of followers.

“That tells you that sometimes people who have no idea about your dream or your life or no experience in it can still lead you,” Brown said. “My daughter was 17, 18 years old, but had I not listened to her, I wouldn’t be standing here before you.

“God can use anybody to bless you, to guide you, to inform you.

Today is probably the last day that any of you will do the same thing at the same time. You all graduate today. But going forward, don’t ever compare your life to anyone else’s.

“My husband will tell you, he didn’t believe me when I would tell him (about her dreams). I told him I had this feeling, I heard this voice, I saw this dream, I know what’s going to happen. And he’d just say OK. But now he’s like, ‘Hey, are you doing a video today?

What do you need me to do? Sometimes you’ve got to make a believer out of people. And don’t get discouraged if they don’t believe in the moment. God gave it to you and not them.”

Brown told the graduates that God has a plan for each of them.

“And whatever that thing is inside — that inner voice that burns deep — that is for you,” Brown said. “And don’t be discouraged if other people don’t see it, or they don’t believe it, or they don’t understand it. It’s not for them. It’s for you.”

As she concluded her speech, Brown asked the graduates to stand.

“Whatever the journey you go on, whatever the dream is that you have, in order for it to come to pass, you’re going to have to get off your butt to go get it,” Brown said to a vigorous round of cheers and applause. “So know that people are cheering for you. They love you, and honey, everything that’s in you is in you for a reason.

“God deposits dreams if you go after them fiercely and believe it until you have them.”

On May 9, she returned to the place where her path first took shape— Grambling State University—to receive an honorary doctorate during the Spring 2025 Commencement.

One of the few African American women in America to have served as a Chief Information Officer for multiple Fortune 500 companies, Robinson’s story is not just one of professional excellence—it’s a testament to purpose, preparation, and possibility.

She grew up in Jennings, Louisiana, in a household where education wasn’t just encouraged—it was expected.

Her father, James Ward, served as an elementary school principal, while her mother, Josephine Ward, taught junior and senior English literature.

Together, they were prominent educators and leaders in their community, revered for their intellect, integrity, and service.

From a young age, Robinson was drawn to puzzles, patterns, and how things work. “In school, I gravitated toward math and science classes because they offered a sense of order and discovery,” she recalls. Her curiosity found direction thanks to a high school math teacher who recognized her potential. “I had a high school math teacher who encouraged me to pursue more advanced studies and who saw in me a future that I hadn’t yet imagined. That encouragement planted the seed.”

Robinson also credits several influential faculty members with helping shape her academic direction and professional future.

“I had professors who saw me— who pushed me to go beyond what was expected. Their belief in my potential was transformative,” she shares. “I continue to have profound gratitude to Dr. Samuel Douglas, Dean of the Math Department, and Dr. Julius Penn, Head of the Computing Center, who expected me to better than the day before. They wholeheartedly made my exposure to IBM happen.”

GRAMBLING STATE SURPASSES $500,000 IN DONOR-FUNDED SCHOLARSHIPS, AWARDING $267,968 IN SPRING 2025 Grambling State University remains committed to removing financial barriers and empowering student success, awarding $267,968 in donor-funded scholarships to 264 students for the Spring 2025 semester. This milestone builds upon a record-breaking year, with the university surpassing its $500,000 scholarship goal for 20242025 — a 102% increase in total funds distributed and a 131% rise in the number of awards granted compared to the previous academic year. With 7,541 applications submitted, the GSU Scholarship Committee worked diligently to review applications and strategically allocate funding to maximize impact.

“Every dollar dedicated to our students helps unlock their potential, fuel their success, and shape their future,” said Brandon A. Logan, Vice President for University Advancement and Innovation. “With 42% of our students being first-generation and over 95% relying on some form of aid, we recognize the critical role scholarships play in transforming lives. Some of the most impactful awards this semester came from the Hunt Forest Products, LLC Endowed Scholarship, Joel L. Fletcher, Jr. and Ralph W.E. Jones, Sr. Scholarship, Rick Gallot Endowed Scholarship, The Shade Room First Generation Endowed Scholarship, and the Willie D. Davis Endowed Scholarship, each contributing $9,000 in scholarships to deserving students.

Scholarship Recipients Share Their Transformative Experiences For many students, receiving a scholarship is more than just financial relief — it represents hope, recognition, and a renewed commitment to their academic journey.

“As an international student with a partial scholarship and a $3,000 deficit, receiving this support has been life-changing,” said Theophilus Mensah, a freshman management major from Kumasi, Ghana. “It has significantly reduced my financial burden, allowing me to focus on my education and career aspirations. This scholarship is a symbol of hope and encouragement, reminding me that my dreams are valid and achievable.”

Tamia Curtis, a sophomore criminal justice major from Ruston, Louisiana, echoed this sentiment. “After receiving this award, I felt that my academic efforts had been noticed — I’ve been working hard to exceed my own expectations. The financial assistance will allow me to focus more on my studies and become more engaged on campus, including joining student organizations.”

HAMMONDS ESTABLISH $20,000 EDUCATION ENDOWMENT FOR GRAMBLING STATE STUDENTS In October, Grambling State University (GSU) recognized its second class of Distinguished 10 alumni honorees, a distinction presented to alumni who have demonstrated excellence in their occupational fields and communities.

Recently, one of those honorees joined her husband in recognizing what being a Grambling State graduate means to them by establishing a $20,000 endowment in their name.

Dr. Cynthia Jackson-Hammond and her husband Dr. James Hammond, both former educators, established the endowment to help GSU students follow in their footsteps toward a brighter future.

“We began our career as educators,” Cynthia Jackson-Hammond said. “We have been teachers, school directors, Superintendents of school systems, higher education faculty, administrators, and a college president (she served as president at Central State University from 2012-20). We offer our resources to an aspiring educator.”

COLLEGE OF BUSINESS CELEBRATES PAULINE BLAKELY DAY, ANNOUNCES HONORARY SCHOLARSHIP For more than 40 years Pauline Blakely was a propelling force in Grambling State University College of Business, where she impacted the lives of hundreds of students as a marketing/business instructor as well as serving as Director of Admissions.

And now Sept. 5, 2024, will forever be remembered as Mrs. Pauline Blakely Day at GSU after she was honored Thursday with a ceremony in the College of Business’ Dean Suite at Jacob T. Stewart Hall that included the announcement of a scholarship that has been established in Blakely’s name.

Marva Vary-Savage is a 1990 GSU marketing graduate who has established the scholarship in Blakely’s honor.

“When I reflect back on how Ms. Blakely impacted my time at Grambling and how she helped to shape and mold me with the knowledge and information of marketing — her business and marketing acumen is second to none,” Vary-Savage said. “I’m not bragging on myself, I’m bragging on how much she poured into my life. We didn’t always make the mark, but she was always able to give us that nurturing push to prepare us and help us better ourselves.

“There is no more important job other than that of an educator. Our future depends on the education profession to prepare children to be responsible citizens and contributors to the public good.”

She said it was important for her and her husband to give back to the university that fostered their success in life.

“Grambling State University is a premier institution that has always been committed to thousands who needed an opportunity to grow, develop, and progress,” Cynthia Jackson-Hammond said. “Grambling State University gave that opportunity to my parents, Milton and Irene Jackson, my sister, Marva Rae McHenry, my brother, Michael V. Jackson and to both of us. Countless family members have attended this phenomenal space and achieved unimaginable levels of success internationally, nationally and within their respective communities.”

“With the success that we have achieved, we have a responsibility to support the many students that have the drive and commitment to be the best that they can be! It is our responsibility to give back and uplift.”

Jackson-Hammond said she hopes the gift presented to GSU will encourage others to join in on the support she and her husband are giving to the university.

“Grambling State University alumni are ardent supporters … but I implore alumni to ask, ‘Can I do more?’ We would encourage you to think about the year that you graduated and give that amount each year,” she said. “For instance, if you graduated in 1980, then begin by contributing $1,980 annually. Be a part of supporting the next generation of Gramblinites. They will make all of us proud!”

“She’s always been a legend to us but it’s good to see her finally recognized on a center stage,” Ken Blakely said.

Blakely was honored with a Humanitarian Award from GSU, something that was very much deserved, her daughter said.

“I knew of her greatness and then she came home with this Humanitarian Award,” Lisa Blakely said. “And I was so glad she was being recognized because people would always live with us. We didn’t know strangers. If someone couldn’t get housing, she would tell them to come and stay with her. During Homecoming everyone would always come over to the house and she’d have food and everything ready.

The scholarship in Blakely’s name will be set up for $1,000 per semester for a GSU marketing major with certain academic stipulations including a 2.5 EPA. More information on the scholarship will be available through the GSU’s College of Business Dean’s Office.

SPRING 1999, 2004 DELTA SIGMA THETA INITIATES ESTABLISH DUAL ANNIVERSARY ENDOWMENTS AT GRAMBLING STATE Members of the Delta Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. have doubled down to support their alma mater and its current studies.

As Grambling State University (GSU) held its 2024 Homecoming festivities last year, the initiates of the Delta Iota of Spring 1999 and 2004 each wrapped up the establishment of $10,000 endowments presented to the university, respectively.

While plans for the endowments were completed around Homecoming or soon thereafter, plans for the anniversary contributions to GSU were longer in the making.

“It was our 25th anniversary that year of joining the sorority and this was something that we had talked more and more about as the anniversary year approached,” said Victoria Washington of GSU’s Delta Iota Class of 1999. “Service, scholarships, sisterhood, and making a social impact are the core beliefs of Delta Sigma Theta, and so we wanted to see how we can make an impact on the university where we all met. And so that’s how we initially came up with the idea of doing this.”

“This endowment is a tribute to Delta Iota’s legacy of leadership, academic excellence, and community service,” Harper said. “It serves as a way to ensure that future generations of GSU students receive the support they need to excel and continue carrying forward our chapter’s tradition of excellence.”

Stephanie Usher, a 2005 Grambling State graduate and member of the Delta Iota line of 2004, said being a Delta made establishing the endowment something that came naturally.

“Sisterhood in Delta Sigma Theta means always standing together, lifting each other up, and giving back to the world around us,” Usher said. “Together, we’re stronger, and our impact reaches beyond ourselves. United by love, service, and a commitment to making a difference, we are forever bound by the call to give back.”

“This scholarship also reflects our commitment to directly investing in Grambling State University in the name of the Delta Iota Chapter,” Harper said. “It highlights the importance of alumni giving and serves as an invitation for others to join us in supporting GSU. Our hope is that this act of giving inspires fellow alumni, current students, and supporters to continue building on the university’s legacy of academic excellence and service.”

Washington, who played on the Lady Tigers’ volleyball team while attending GSU and earning her undergraduate degree in computer science, said teamwork played a big role in both recent endowments.

“Being a Delta Iota member is about working together for Grambling and the surrounding community,” Washington said. “People contributed whatever they could, because different people are in different situations. But every dollar counts. If I had to guess, I’d say around 90% of our line who are still with us contributed to our line’s endowment.”

“Of all the things we planned and talked about for our 25th anniversary, the endowment was one of the most important pieces of that — creating some type of scholarship plan that we can give back to the university where we all met. So, we’re very proud of how it all came together.”

Dr. Dayna Harper, a 2006 graduate of GSU, said the spring of 2004 line’s Legacy of Excellence Scholarship was established because that group felt it was essential to give back to the institution that shaped their lives and values.

PAYING IT FORWARD: DUPLANTIER BROTHERS AND THEIR WIVES ESTABLISH ENDOWMENTS TO BENEFIT GAP SCHOLARSHIP FUND Grambling, Louisiana native Jon-Al Duplantier and his wife, Devra Mouton Duplantier, believe that everyone should have a chance to reach their full potential and positively contribute to society.

He credits God for being the driving force behind the couple’s decision to create two $40,000 endowments recently established at Grambling State University (GSU) in the name of the Duplantier and Mouton (Devra’s maiden name) families to go toward the school’s GAP Scholarship Fund.

Duplantier, who earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from GSU in 1989, went on to earn his juris doctorate in Law from LSU. He retired after 28 years working for energy companies, including as president of Rental Tools and Well Services at Parker Drilling. He had previously served as Senior Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer, and General Counsel at Parker Drilling.

When asked about his professional journey, Duplantier credits growing up in Grambling and attending Grambling State University as contributing factors to his professional accomplishments.

“But because I didn’t have to go and try to fit in anywhere, I could just be who I was comfortable being at that time. I was able to spend time with my friends and family in an environment that was familiar and comfortable.”

Duplantier met his wife the summer before his senior year at Grambling Laboratory High School in her hometown of Opelousas, Louisiana, and 40 years later they are still going strong.

Duplantier said a charity event he and his wife attended sparked their desire to concentrate more on a focused approach to giving back to others.

“A few years ago, Devra and I had a realization after going to a charity event, a Black-Tie Gala for a group called Attack Poverty,” Duplantier said. “They were raising money for charity, and they had a number of posters up on the wall, and a couple of those posters had statistics — statistics that just blew us away.”

“One statistic was that if kids don’t read on grade level by the time they’re in the third grade, they’re four times less likely than their peers to graduate high school. And the other stat was 70% of U.S. inmates — people who are locked up — read at the fourth-grade level or lower.”

That led Duplantier and his wife to volunteer at Life Change Church (where they are members) to provide leadership, coordination, and oversight for a summer reading lab for kids in grades 1-3. The church provides space, resources, computers, and volunteers.

“We provide them with an individual Apple MacBook or Google Chromebook and personal subscriptions to an online reading program. The kids think they’re playing games, but they’re actually learning to recognize letters, recognize sounds, recognize words, and ultimately, they learn to read.”

“We have partnered with the Houston Food Bank which delivers a healthy, nutritional meal for the kids for free,” Duplantier said. “For those kids who attend most of the sessions, the church gifts them the computer so that they continue to work on the online course.”

“Our first summer we had 13 kids, and the second we had 19. Then last summer we had 25, so it’s growing.”

The Duplantiers began their efforts to give back to Grambling State University in earnest four years ago.

“It’s in our hearts now that we need to do more to help people,” Duplantier said. “Throughout my career, I’ve met some really smart people who, had they been given a chance earlier, their careers would have been far more productive and successful than they were. They did fine, but they were starting from a hole — people who had to borrow money to go to school, people who didn’t know who they were at 25. They were always trying to fit in, and it took them longer than their corporate peers to find steady footing.”

“Dev and I talked to (former GSU and current University of Louisiana System President) Rick Gallot, and to (current GSU President) Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr. This started with Rick about four years ago when he told us about a problem at GSU. He said the university was admitting kids that arrive on campus and stay for a couple of weeks while their financial aid packages are sorted. But oftentimes, GSU approves as much aid as it is capable of giving them, and the students’ parents write a check for as much as they can write, and yet there remains a balance of approximately $2,000 – $2,500 they can’t cover. Consequently, the kids go home through no fault of their own.”

After that conversation with Gallot, the Duplantiers started giving $10,000 per year to provide financial assistance to four such students every year to get the $2,500 the students needed.

“The thought was, because of the availability of federal and state matching funds, if we could give Grambling $40,000, the university can turn that into $100,000, which would help create a long-lasting perpetuity of $2,500 for kids in the spring and the fall.”

“While we’re no longer paying for four GAP Scholarships every year, we are happy that each of the two endowments will pay for one student each fall and spring forever. We are very grateful to my brother, André, and his wife, Lestavia — both GSU graduates — who decided to contribute $20,000. Devra and I matched that amount to create the Duplantier Family Scholarship. We funded the Mouton Family Scholarship on our own.”

The Mouton Family scholarship was established in memory of Devra’s parents, Harold and Charlotte Mouton.

“My wife’s mother and father were lifelong educators,” Duplantier said. “Her mom was a high school English and Drama teacher, and her dad worked with special needs kids for a long time before becoming a high school administrator.”

ALUMNUS ERIC WASHINGTON DONATES $50,000 TO BENEFIT GAP FUND, MARCHING BAND, BASEBALL TEAM

“So, Dev and I created the endowed Mouton Family Scholarship to honor and respect the memory of my wife’s mom and dad for what they have done and what they meant to kids in and around St. Landry Parish. They both — her mom and dad — went to and graduated from GSU.” The endowed Duplantier Family Scholarship honors the memory of the Duplantier brothers’ parents. Their father, John Allen Duplantier (known on campus as “Mr. D.”), was a longtime Grambling State professor. Their mother, Gwendolyn Veleta Duplantier, (known as “Ms. D.”), spent 30 years as a secretary and mentor in the Basic Studies Department.

GRAMBLING STATE UNIVERSITY TO RECEIVE MORE THAN $20 MILLION IN TARGETED STATE INVESTMENTS FOLLOWING LEGISLATIVE ACTION Grambling State University is set to receive more than $20 million in additional state funding following the signing of key appropriations bills by Governor Jeff Landry. Passed by the Louisiana Legislature in June 2025, this historic investment underscores Grambling State’s enduring legacy of academic excellence and athletic distinction, while sustaining momentum as a driver of opportunity, innovation, and long-term institutional strength.

The funding secured through this legislative session represents targeted investments that build on the stable base funding provided for higher education in the Fiscal Year 2025–2026 budget.

“These appropriations represent more than fiscal support, they reflect trust in Grambling State’s direction and future,” said President Martin Lemelle, Jr. “We are committed to deploying these resources strategically and sustainably, aligning each investment with our institutional priorities. This is not just about improvement, it’s about transformation guided by discipline, purpose, and an unwavering belief in what our university can achieve.”

Being a part of GramFam gets into your blood and becomes a part of your soul. That’s how it happened for former Grambling State University (GSU) tight end and current Chicago Bears Defensive Coordinator Eric Washington.

This connection has inspired Washington to support his alma mater over the years. Most recently, he and his wife Amy contributed $50,000 to the institution, designating the funds to three areas close to their hearts: the GAP Scholarship Fund, the World Famed Tiger Marching Band, and the GSU baseball team.

“We donated to the GAP scholarship, part of our donation was for that, and part of our donation was to the World Famed,” Washington said. “And also the baseball team. I’ve gotten to know (GSU baseball coach) Davin Pierre. I have so much respect for what he’s doing. And all of the sports teams.”

“It was a privilege and honor for us to donate to those three causes.

Baseball, the GAP scholarship and the World Famed, which is an ambassador for the university and we’re so proud of what they do, and my son is a trombone player. I was a trombone player in high school, so we have that in common. Before I started playing football I actually marched in the band in high school. This goes back a long way. I grew up on the World Famed. We wanted to do something that was close to our heart, but at the same time areas that we thought we could really make the kind of impact that we desired to make.”

Washington said it’s his love of being part of GramFam that leads him to continue giving back to GSU.

$50,000 GSU COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ENDOWMENT AIMS TO PERPETUATE POWER IN FUTURE GRADUATES

LASTING IMPACT: ADAMS HALL FOYER NAMED POSTHUMOUSLY FOR DR. LAMORE J. CARTER

Investing in the past. Investing in the future. But most of all, investing in the alma mater that molded and shaped them into the business leaders they have become in hopes of perpetuating power for new generations.

The impact the late Dr. Lamore Carter left on higher education and especially Grambling State University is still felt today, seven years after his passing at the age of 92.

Six Grambling State University graduates are doing just that after teaming to create a $50,000 GramFam Business Alumni Endowment supporting GSU’s College of Business.

It’s a project spearheaded by 1999 GSU graduate Damon Jackson, who with his wife Patrice, a 1998 Grambling State graduate, put together a team of five other alums — Erick Harris, Jacquillia (Trigg) Hooper, Jason Heyward, Christoper Buckley and Alcide Baker, to establish the endowment.

“My wife and I had been wanting to do an endowment for Grambling for years, and I was working for Kind Snacks and was going down to Florida A&M every year and presenting an endowment on behalf of Kind,” Jackson said. “And once you give $100,000 or $110,000 a year there, you give a plaque on the wall outside the School of Business.”

“So, I hit $300,000 in endowment and another $100,000 in product that I gave to the school and got a plaque on the wall.

So, once I got a plaque on the wall, I realized I would love to do something like that for Grambling.”

And so, Jackson began networking with fellow GramFams.

“I told Erick that I my wife and I were going to do an endowment for Grambling — $10,000 —and talk with them about giving a plaque or something to encourage other alumni to do the same,” Jackson said. “And then Erick said, ‘Hey, I want to be a part of that.’ And once Erick said that, Jacquilla and everybody started saying they wanted to be part of it, too. So, I said that if folks are serious, I’m willing to talk to the school and see what they’re willing to do.”

Jackson and Hooper were both awarded academic scholarships and interned at Philip Morris after being recruited there by Harris.

Jackson ended up following in Harris’ footsteps to begin his career.

After putting the group together, Jackson and Harris talked to Derrick Warren, Dean of GSU’s College of Business, who directed them to talk to GSU Vice President for University Advancement and Innovation Brandon A. Logan.

“And a lot of us come from underserved communities. So, I said to them, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to give back to our school?”

And everyone was like, that’s a great idea. So, I talked with Brandon, explained our vision, and now we’re already at over $10,000 two months within our commitment date of August to start funding."

And those impacts go significantly further than GSU, also reaching past Wiley College and Texas College, where he also worked, all the way to India, China, and Thailand, countries Carter traveled to in the 1980s and successfully negotiated with to develop and implement the state of Louisiana’s International Faculty Student Exchange Programs, bringing instructors from those countries to Louisiana.

And it’s because of all the impacts made at Grambling and other Louisiana colleges as well as Wiley and Texas Colleges that the late Carter was honored during GSU’s Homecoming festivities with the naming of the foyer at GSU’s Charles P. Adams Hall as the Dr. Lamore J. Carter Foyer.

Carter spent four decades working at Grambling State, serving in a number of roles from psychologist to professor to provost to vice president of academic affairs.

In 1961, Carter was named the director and psychologist for Grambling’s Special Education Diagnostic Center, an experience which he told others was one of the highlights of his career.

Carter took on an even bigger challenge in 1965, when he became the director of Grambling’s Center for Institutional Research and was tasked with building and maintaining the new center.

It was midway through his teaching career, in 1969, that Carter began traveling to gain experience at additional colleges. He served as the first postdoctoral fellow in educational research for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, a distinguished visiting professor of psychology and education at Morehouse College in Atlanta, dean of faculties at Texas Southern University, and a postdoctoral fellow at Louisiana State University.

He returned to Grambling for the second time in 1971 as the associate dean for administration and research and was promoted to vice president for academic affairs and research in 1977, a position that he held until 1991.

GRAMBLING STATE UNIVERSITY ROARS PAST GOAL DURING FOURTH ANNUAL 1901 DAY OF GIVING Grambling State University continues to build momentum — and history — under the leadership of President Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr. During the fourth annual 1901 Day of Giving, Grambling State set a new fundraising record, securing $711,907 in philanthropic support from students, alumni, faculty, staff, parents, and friends. This remarkable total represents a 142% achievement over the campaign goal of $500,000 and a 38% increase over last year’s giving results.

Investments came from 35 states across the nation, reflecting the university’s far-reaching impact. The top contributing states included Louisiana (403), Texas (218), California (43), Georgia (38), and Illinois (27).

Brandon A. Logan, Vice President for University Advancement and Innovation, emphasized the significance of student involvement.

“Our students — the heartbeat of Grambling State University — led the way, demonstrating excellence, resilience, and pride through an extraordinary 8-hour, student-driven live production,” Logan said. “Their energy, leadership, and passion inspired every investment made during the 1901 Day of Giving. To every student who served, every student who invested, and every member of the Grambling State family who stood with us, I offer my deepest gratitude. On September 1, 2025, that conversation included the voice of Grambling State University President Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr., who has been appointed to serve a three-year term on the NCAA Committee on Access, Opportunity, and Impact.

For a university that has helped shape generations of student-athletes with limited resources but limitless determination, the appointment is more than ceremonial—it’s a meaningful affirmation of Grambling State’s place in national discourse.

The committee was formed to address deep-rooted disparities in intercollegiate athletics, from leadership pipelines to institutional support. It works to expand visibility, opportunity, and influence for schools and individuals that have historically stood at the margins of power.

“Serving on this committee is a responsibility I take seriously,” said Dr. Lemelle. “It is a chance to help ensure that institutions like Grambling—rich in legacy and driven by purpose—are part of shaping a system that recognizes talent, builds character, and opens doors. While not a former student-athlete himself, Dr. Lemelle understands what athletics can mean to communities like Grambling—where football fields and track lanes often double as proving grounds for leadership, resilience, and transformation. His work as president reflects that same drive: to widen access, challenge outdated structures, and invest in systems that nurture success.

“Dr. Lemelle is an ideal representative for this national committee,” said Dr. Charles McClelland, Commissioner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. “He brings vision, integrity, and a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing our institutions. GRAMBLING STATE MAKES HISTORY AS FIRST HBCU IN THE U.S., ONLY INSTITUTION IN LOUISIANA WITH A DIGITAL LIBRARY The sun shined brilliantly overhead as Grambling State ushered in the dawn of a new age and era with a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the grand opening of the institution’s new Digital Library and Learning Commons.

A space to connect, create, and collaborate. The state-ofthe-art, 50,000 square foot facility is designed to support all aspects of learning. With more than 150 computer stations, 17,000 square feet of study space, and multipurpose space for events, meetings, and seminars, it is the ultimate intersection of academics, curiosity, and community.

“It equips our esteemed faculty and staff with immediate connectivity to a vast repository of digital resources and pedagogical tools.

This milestone is a testament to the audacious spirit of Grambling State University, where no vision is too big, or too bold.”

Current Grambling State President Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr. was Executive Vice President when planning and groundbreaking for the Digital Library and Learning Commons was being done. He called Thursday’s grand opening a journey of determination and resilience.

The celebration was a historic moment for GSU, which saw the opening of the old A.C. Lewis Memorial Library in 1962, with an addition built in 1986.

But over the years, time took its toll on the old GSU library, and looking toward the future, in 2017, then President Rick Gallot began a digital library project to replace the existing facility. With the support of alumni, faculty, and students, the project gained funding and commitments, and in 2019, construction began on the first digital library at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU).

“We fought for this project because we know it’s important and we fight for Dear Ole Grambling because we believe in the boundless potential of every student who walks through our doors,” Lemelle said.

The journey toward the $16.6M library’s opening eventually became an arduous one due to circumstances beyond the university’s control. But perseverance and persistence finally paid off, leading up to the official unveiling of GSU’s new doorway to the future.

“It will be where we light the torch of victory,” Lemelle said. “Victory in learning. Victory in innovation. And victory in community.

It is here that we will fight for Dear Ole Grambling, and in this fight we will arm ourselves with the knowledge, perseverance, and the unyielding spirit that defines us.

Gallot, now President/CEO of the University of Louisiana System (ULS), was on hand for the grand opening celebration.

“So, as we stand here today, let us remember what we set out to do — let us tell them we are building, not just structures, but the future. Let us tell them we’re building not just spaces but legacies.

And as we continue to build, let us also fight — fight for the dreams of our students, fight for the excellence of our university, and yes, fight for Dear Ole Grambling for we are the pride of the USA and there is no doubt that we will win today, tomorrow and always.”

VAPA RECEIVES NAST ACCREDITATION The Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Grambling State University was granted accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST), becoming one of only five accredited HBCUs in the country with this designation. This achievement affirms the University’s commitment to high-quality arts education and marks a major milestone for the department.

As part of the accreditation process, the name of the degree program was officially updated from Bachelor of Arts in Visual and Performing Arts to Bachelor of Arts in Theatre. This change reflects the program’s refined academic focus and alignment with national standards in the discipline. Students with a desire to major in visual arts will still be able to pursue concentrations in Digital Art and Studio Art that remain a part of the Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre.

DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC REACCREDITED BY NASM THROUGH 2033 Music has been one of the foundations for Grambling State University, with its first music classes being offered in 1905. And it will continue to do so long into the future, as shown by GSU’s reaccreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). The accreditation is in effect as of Spring 2025. The next NASM review of Grambling State’s Music Department will take place in the 2032-33 school year.

“I am elated to announce that our music department has been reaffirmed by the National Association of Schools of Music,” said Dr. Nikole Roebuck, Head of GSU’s Music Department and Director of the World Famed Marching Tiger Band. “This prestigious accreditation not only highlights our commitment to excellence in music but also serves as a testament to the hard work and dedication of our faculty, staff and students.

Grambling State’s Department of Music views its role at the university as both an academic and a service unit whose mission is to provide programs of study for both music majors and non-music majors and to educate future music professionals through appropriate curricular offerings leading to the Bachelor of Arts in Music degree with three concentrations — Bachelor of Arts in Music (Liberal Arts), Bachelor of Arts in Commercial Music (Sound Recording Technology) and Bachelor of Arts in Music Education (Instrumental, Vocal).

GRAMBLING STATE EXPANDS RECYCLING EFFORTS WITH RENEWED KEEP LOUISIANA BEAUTIFUL GRANT The accreditation runs through the 2030–31 academic year, the next scheduled NAST review year for GSU. “To be in full compliance with all of NAST accreditation requirements, it was necessary for the diploma issued to graduates to indicate the major was theatre,” Walton said. “GSU made a request to the Board of Regents, and with the support of (the University of Louisiana System) staff, the degree program’s name was changed back to theatre.”

GSU Coordinator of Theatre and Technical Director David Kaul called receiving confirmation of continued accreditation of the program a win for the department as well as Grambling State University as a whole.

“This is a great accomplishment for the University, which has been continuously accredited by NAST since 1986. Having this status settled will be one more tool in helping recruit Theatre students who will know their degree is guided by nationally recognized standards.”

Grambling State University, a Keep Louisiana Beautiful University Affiliate, has been awarded a $5,000 grant made possible through funding from a five-year EPA Gulf of Mexico Trash-Free Waters Grant. This grant renewal fuels the “Retrieve, Reduce, Recycle” project, reinforcing the university’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.

Through these efforts, Grambling State aims to educate at least 50 students in Honors Seminar classes on the benefits of recycling and recruit 100 volunteers to support collection and processing. The goal is to increase the amount of cardboard recycled by 10% each semester.

The Keep Louisiana Beautiful University Affiliate Grant provides resources to empower students as environmental change agents. Through volunteer efforts and institutional support, Grambling State has met the program’s 10% in-kind or cash match requirement.

GSU RECEIVES $2.1M HAWKINS GRANT FROM BIDEN-HARRIS ADMINISTRATION Grant Will Fund Initiative to Enhance Teacher Diversity and Multilingual Representation in Underrepresented Populations Building on a commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in education, Grambling State University (GSU) was selected as one of only four Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to receive the prestigious Augustus F. Hawkins Centers of Excellence (Hawkins) grant. The grant, which provides $379,000 for the first year, and $2.1 million over five years, will support GSU’s efforts to increase multilingual representation and address the need for more diverse educators in underserved communities.

“This opportunity allows us to explore all factors of the learning process that impact student success,” said Grambling State President Martin Lemelle, Jr. “From diversity in the classroom to innovative teaching techniques, we are expanding how education is delivered and received. This grant represents another step in our commitment to standing at the forefront of workforce preparedness, ensuring our graduates are ready to excel in today’s complex educational landscape.”

The grant, awarded by the Biden-Harris Administration through the U.S. Department of Education, supports GSU’s groundbreaking initiative, GramPREP: The Grambling Center of Excellence for Teaching and Learning. Dr. Danielle Williams, Assistant Professor in the College of Education, will serve as the Principal Investigator (PI) for the project. Katina Crowe-Scott will serve as the Program Coordinator.

“Grambling State University is uniquely positioned to address the barriers faced by bilingual teacher candidates, especially those from underrepresented communities,” said Dr. Danielle Williams.

“By creating this groundbreaking program at an HBCU, we are closing opportunity gaps and promoting a multilingual approach to teaching and learning. This program offers a rare and vital platform for multilingual educators to collaborate, share experiences, and develop strategies.”

GramPREP aims to address critical needs within local education agencies (LEAs) by recruiting and training 45 aspiring teachers from underrepresented populations. The program will enhance GSU’s teacher preparation programs by aligning coursework, coaching, and support with an evidence-based instructional rubric. It will also establish robust clinical experiences in partnership with LEAs and support teacher retention through Communities of Practice and induction program design workshops.

MELLON FOUNDATION AWARDS $500,000 GRANT TO ENHANCE “VOICES OF GRAMBLING” DIGITAL EQUITY PROJECT The Mellon Foundation awarded a $500,000 grant to support the “Voices of Grambling: Scaling Digital Equity Projects,” an initiative aimed at enhancing the understanding and interpretation of African American history through advanced digital technology. This funding will allow for the expansion of the experiential learning lab and the creation of a sustainable version 2.0 of the “Voices of Grambling” immersive virtual-reality experience, which overlays oral histories and primary sources onto a digital reconstruction of the historic 1967 campus protest at Grambling State University (GSU).

Dr. Edward Holt, the project leader and head of the History Department at GSU, along with Yanise Days and Dr. Brian McGowan, who is heading the effort at the University of Arkansas, will lead the project.

“The ‘Voices of Grambling’ initiative was created following two tragedies: the COVID-19 pandemic and the loss of our old University Library. The library and the pandemic represent the loss of knowledge of the past through the physical materials and the individuals who remembered it. Rather than allow information about the history of GSU and Northern Louisiana to continue to disappear, we started this project as a means to preserve the history of GSU, the city of Grambling, and Northern Louisiana, while providing high-quality experiential learning opportunities for our students,” said Dr. Holt.

The project aims to produce several key deliverables, including an interactive VR Immersive Environment of the 1967 campus protest, two workshops focused on digital equity and Black freedom movements, a public lecture series around the themes of the project, two national conference presentations, and twelve student internships to assist in the development of the above work.

“The project thrives due to its use of student-centered experiential learning to work on real historical problems. Students work side-by-side with faculty to conduct research, render 3D models, and code the immersive experience,” Dr. Holt said.

“Grants from the LEH, SSRC, NEH, and Lepage Center were essential to our project as they allowed us to build the intellectual and material capacity to do this work,” Dr. Holt said.

Digital equity is a vital component of this project, aiming to provide equitable access to digital technologies and interdisciplinary training for historically underrepresented groups. The initiative seeks to ensure that marginalized voices are included in the historical record and empowered through community-based relationships.

The twelve student internships included in the project are designed to provide valuable skills and experiences.

“Due to the Mellon funding, we have been able to increase the number of student interns and will recruit from departments throughout the two universities (Art, Engineering, Computer Science, History, etc.) in order to create interdisciplinary teams that represent what students might encounter in the workforce,” Dr. Holt said.

The grant will enable the continuation of workshops, lecture series, and research dissemination, fostering a greater understanding of these critical issues.

For Dr. Holt, the “Voices of Grambling” initiative represents a significant step towards preserving and amplifying the voices of historically marginalized communities, particularly in the context of African FULL STORY American history and digital equity.

CONTINUED NSF GRANT TO EXPAND EFFORTS IN STEM GROWTH AT GRAMBLING STATE Grant funding received from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) HBCU-UP program will allow Grambling State University’s (GSU) ability to branch out even further in continuing to produce highly prepared and competitive STEM graduates who are equipped to meet workforce needs.

The NSF’s total intended award amount for GSU in this grant is $3 million, with $1,190,813 confirmed to be already obligated for 2024 and 2025. Contingent on the availability of funds and scientific progress of the project, NSF expects to continue support at approximately the following levels — $590,965 for 2026; $620,381 for 2027; and $597,841 for 2028.

Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Connie Walton is the principal investigator for Grambling State’s grant project while Dr. Stacey A. Duhon, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and William McIntosh Endowed Professor in Liberal Arts, is the co-principal investigator.

“Some of these STEM graduates will continue their education in pursuit of a Ph.D. in a STEM field or a professional degree,” Walton said. “Many of the graduates will immediately enter the STEM workforce. The proposal, Leveraging Innovation and Discovery for STEM Success (LIDSS), that was funded was developed two years ago by a team of GSU STEM faculty and the retired Dean of the College of Business.

“The focus of this NSF funded project is to enhance the ability of Grambling State University to prepare highly competitive STEM graduates to meet the challenges present in an ever-changing world.”

Walton said discovery and innovation are the core of the design of each project activity.

‟The premise is Discovery and Innovation that engages students in inquiry-based learning will lead to a higher level of STEM success for both students and faculty.”

“The results of these interventions should be of great interest to educators. A Biennial Symposium will be hosted by LIDSS to engage communities at the national level in discussions related to educational strategies that support no community being left behind.”

“This project will implement strategies that are meant to reverse the negative impact the pandemic has had on learning at all levels. The number of STEM students who are veterans at GSU will be increased by implementing an aggressive recruitment plan that will utilize our current veteran STEM majors as ambassadors.”

Walton said those ambassadors will utilize the three components of STEM Pipeline Activity to utilize the grant funding to grow the field. The components include a summer program targeting third-eighth grade students; a summer program that targets ninth-11th grade students and their teachers; and visits to elementary and secondary schools during the school year.

GRAMBLING STATE RECEIVES $700,000 NSF GRANT TO BROADEN RESEARCH ETHICS EDUCATION Grambling State University (GSU) received a $700,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to broaden research ethics education.

Jackson said that currently, only select members of the university community have to complete limited research ethics training (i.e., one or two online courses; required of faculty who submit grant proposals to particular federal agencies and students conducting dissertation or thesis research).

Dr. Carolyn Jackson, GSU Associate Professor of Education and Interim Director of the Office of Graduate Studies, is the project’s principal investigator (PI) for the project while Provost and Vice President Academic Affairs Dr. Connie Walton is the co-PI.

“With the new program, we will add to the lone requirement for faculty and graduate students to complete specific CITI RCR training modules by creating a comprehensive program where all students, faculty, and staff will participate in trainings and have additional services and supports available through the new department,” Jackson said. “Providing this resource will prove to be an invaluable addition and will have far-reaching results.”

Jackson said Grambling State is one of only two institutions in Louisiana awarded NSF’s Ethics and Responsible Research (ER2) grant this cycle, with Tulane being the other institution.

GSU is also the only HBCU to be awarded this cycle.

Titled “Fostering a Culture of Research Ethics and Integrity: An Institutional Transformational Project,” the project’s overarching goals are to promote a culture of research integrity and build robust research capabilities through more substantial training.

GSU will add to the current requirement for faculty and graduate students to complete specific responsible conduct of research (RCR) training modules via new, comprehensive, university-wide Department of Research Ethics and Integrity (DREI), that will be dedicated to advancing responsible and ethical research practices.

“The grant proposal was submitted to NSF’s Ethical and Responsible Research (ER2) program, which has an aim to support fundamental research about what constitutes or promotes responsible and ethical conduct of research (RECR) — particularly research with human subjects as participants,” Jackson said. “In that, grant programs through NSF are generally very competitive, I wanted there to be little doubt about what we were aiming to do. So, the title explicitly indicated what our project is about. “ As Grambling State is endeavoring to enhance its research profile, the goal is to strengthen the university’s research infrastructure through this comprehensive effort that will result in a new department — The Department of Research Ethics and Integrity (DREI).

“The project aims to foster an atmosphere, whereby all persons understand the importance of conducting research ethically and responsibly by providing essential training,” Jackson said. “The implementation of more substantial training will aid in the continued building of robust research capabilities at our university.”

This project will have a broader impact beyond GSU, by producing data related to research culture at HBCUs and the evidence-based nature of the curriculum design allows for the project to serve as an example of institutional transformation by promoting an enhanced culture of research ethics and integrity.

Jackson said the new Department of Research Ethics and Integrity (DREI) will provide valuable instruction on what constitutes RCR as well as other research support and training activities that are responsive to the needs of a broad range of researchers.

“The DREI will provide training via invited lectures, workshops, a new Research Ethics 101 course, and other activities,” Jackson said. “DREI activities also include experiential learning opportunities for faculty and their students and educational resources for the research community at large. Recent research still indicates that increasing public trust in research remains a challenge, particularly in minority communities.

Jackson added that this project will provide training and additional exposure to GSU faculty and students.”

‟ This is absolutely amazing and a historic, first-of-its-kind type of research program at Grambling. With grant funding, the new Department will serve as the de facto hub for the Human Research Protections Program and will provide training and support to ensure that all stakeholders have the tools necessary to be ethical and responsible researchers.”

PHYSICS PROFESSOR AWARDED $253K NSF GRANT FOR ATOMIC FORCE MICROSCOPY INSTRUMENTATION TO BENEFIT STEM AREAS Grambling State University (GSU) Assistant Professor of Physics Dr. Haeyon Yang was awarded a $253,000 National Science Foundation grant for major research instrumentation.

The goal of Yang’s project, titled “MRI: Track 1 — Acquisition of multiscale imaging capability and education,” is to enhance the research and educational infrastructure for physics and biology at GSU through the acquisition and successful operation of nanoscale imaging capability provided

by Atomic Force Microscopy.

This technology will significantly enhance research in physics and other STEM areas by increasing capability to image surfaces of organic and/or in-organic materials in nanometer scale. This added capability will also continue to broaden research competitiveness in this area, as well as recruiting other research-active physics faculty members.

MRI provides support to acquire critical research instrumentation without which advances in fundamental science and engineering research may not otherwise occur. MRI also provides support to obtain next-generation research instruments by developing instruments with new capabilities that open new opportunities to advance the frontiers in science and engineering research. Additionally, an MRI award is expected to enhance research training of students who will become the next generation of instrument users, designers, and builders.

Yang said the grant acquisition will enhance ongoing research in biological sciences, materials science, and plasma physics at GSU. “Researchers will be able to study the mechanical properties of tissues and cells in pathological states such as liver fibrosis, endothelial dysfunction, and cancer,” Yang said. “Data collected by the new capability will enhance understanding of layered magnetic nanoparticles for stronger magnets, as well as the distribution of grain and composition in nanocomposites for hypersonic applications.

“GSU researchers will be able to investigate the physics of confined plasma, including the interaction of laser pulses with plasma, to understand how the change of the laser plasma affects the transformation of the ablated materials into novel nanoparticles and Quantum Dots during the Laser Ablation in Liquid process. The grant helps advance GSU’s research capability to a world-class level.”

Yang said the nanoscale imaging capability the grant will provide is based on a scanning probe microscope (SPM) coupled with a confocal microscope (CM).

“The Grambling SPM uses a sharp probe attached to the end of a cantilever that scans the surface of a sample,” Yang said. “The probe is so small that it can touch individual atoms and detect the tiny forces between the probe and the sample, allowing us to map the morphology of the surface in nanometer scale. The CM uses laser light to scan the sample in “slices” or optical sections while blocking out-of-focus light.

“Stacking multiple optical sections together allows us to create a three-dimensional image of the sample. So, the combination of SPM and CM gives us both topographical and optical information, in other words, we can see details of the surface and internal structures.”

Yang said the grant will not only help recruit more research-active physics faculty members but that he expects it to also help bolster the number of physics students at GSU. “We already see strong interest in the Physics program based on student inquiries,” Yang said. “The current Physics research program at Grambling has resulted in an invitation to present at the annual (Fall 2024) meeting of Materials Research Society, which is a top-notch, international conference.

“One of our physics undergraduate students is scheduled to give a presentation at this conference. The acquisition of nanoscale imaging capability will broaden research participation and deepen our understanding of the physics of materials, which will attract more students to the physics program.”

Rally Cry, a gaming technology company that builds inclusive gaming experiences for players of all ages and skill levels, will showcase its Rally Cry Championship Tour featuring a College Football 25 mobile gaming truck for students to compete in person for a piece of the prize pool and a custom championship trophy. This partnership marks a significant step in combining the rich traditions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with the dynamic and rapidly growing world of esports.

The state-of-the-art Rally Cry Championship Tour was at the heart of the Bayou Classic celebrations in Champions Square during the event’s annual Fan Fest. The activation featured a 90×60’ semi-truck equipped with a competition stage, control room, LED screen, and a VIP area for partners. The tour kicked off at the Duke’s Mayo Classic at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C., on Sept. 7 and traveled to 10 college campuses across the country and is part of a larger online tournament.

This collaboration aimed to enhance student engagement and development by offering unique opportunities to students from Grambling State University and Southern University.

Rally Cry will produce two intramural esports tournaments at both universities, with the top students from each tournament earning a spot to compete live at the Bayou Classic. In addition, Rally Cry will offer scholarships to the top performers and provide hands-on internship opportunities for six students (three from each school) to gain valuable experience by shadowing the production team during the event.

GRAMBLING STATE RECEIVES OUTSTANDING UNIVERSITY AWARD FOR LOVE THE BOOT EFFORTS RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE IN SUSTAINABILITY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Grambling State University received the prestigious Keep Louisiana Beautiful ~ Love the Boot Outstanding University Award. Receiving the award is a testament to the tireless efforts and leadership of Dr. Rory Bedford, Director of Continuing Education and Service-Learning, and Dr. Ellen Smiley, Dean of the Earl Lester Cole Honors College in collaboration with a number of community partnerships to extend a campus-wide service-learning project for our students. Over 600 students from various organizations across the campus participated in the project.

The Campus-Wide Service-Learning Project, showcased the support of a number of community partners, including Michelle Hopwood and other members of the Grambling Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Greg Williams, District 1 Police Juror and the Lincoln Parish Police Jury, Alvin Bradley, Mayor of the City of Grambling, and Lincoln Preparatory High School Football Team and athletic staffers Johnny Simmons, Chaunce Davison, and Otis Jones. Through their combined efforts, donation of time, services and resources, Grambling State University demonstrated outstanding commitment to sustainability, waste reduction, litter prevention, and beautification.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Bedford and I had the privilege of collaborating with various stakeholders, including Keep Louisiana Beautiful officials, to develop the design for the Affiliate Program. In 2021, the University Affiliate program was created to address the increasing emphasis on sustainability, waste reduction, and litter prevention at universities.”

This innovative program received substantial support, notably from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Keep Louisiana Beautiful, which secured a $500,000 five-year EPA Gulf of Mexico Trash-Free Waters Grant. This grant facilitated the development and launch of the program, encouraging participation in Love the Boot, the creation of a litter assessment app, the production of educational training videos for campus communities, and the provision of grant opportunities for University Affiliates. Grambling State University became one of the first University Affiliates, a milestone that fills the community with pride.

Dr. Bedford reminisced on the project’s evolution: “Several years prior, Dr. Smiley and I had written a grant to promote campus beautification and recycling. This initiative has evolved, empowering students, faculty, and staff to develop projects that address critical environmental needs. We appreciate the Love the Boot committee and Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser for recognizing our efforts to Keep Grambling Beautiful Side-By-Side.

The Love the Boot project, focused on “Keeping Grambling Beautiful Side by Side”, fostered collaboration between students, members of the Grambling community, and Lincoln Parish. This collective endeavor not only contributed to the university’s recognition but also strengthened the bonds between the campus and its surrounding community. The collaboration with our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners showcases the power of unity and shared vision in achieving remarkable feats.

After all, the city itself, which was first incorporated as a village — the first all-Black municipality in Louisiana — in 1953, would unlikely exist without Grambling State University (GSU), which was founded in 1901.

Lemelle said. “Events like neighborhood clean-ups, voter education drives, and youth mentorship programs foster empathy, responsibility, and mutual respect. These efforts help our students see themselves not just as temporary residents, but as contributors to the city’s identity and trajectory.”

Grambling Mayor Alvin Bradley said GSU’s contributions to the city of Grambling’ identity and trajectory have long already been made.

But the bond between the two has never been stronger than now, after the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Grambling State University and the city of Grambling.

“The university is renowned throughout this country, and even worldwide,” Bradley said. “The Eddie Robinson Museum brings people from all over the country into our city thanks to Grambling State University. And that’s a big drawing card to have that museum located on the GSU campus but in our city as well.

The focus areas of that MOU include, but are not limited to, public safety and emergency response, economic and workforce development, community service and any other concerns of mutual interest should they be deemed to be so by both parties.

“And while it’s also on the GSU campus, the new Digital Library is in our city as well and that’s going to attract more alumni and more visitors from throughout the country passing along Interstate-20 through our city.”

Grambling State President Dr. Martin Lemelle, Jr., said the relationship between Grambling State University and the city of Grambling is a foundational one.

Lemelle hopes that the MOU leads to economic growth, workforce development, and student engagement for both the university and the city.

“This is not just about proximity—it’s about shared purpose, shared legacy, and shared responsibility,” Lemelle said. “As a university that sits within a town built around it, we have an obligation to be a good neighbor and an engaged partner.

“This MOU opens new avenues for our students to engage in hands-on learning while contributing to the growth of the local economy,” Lemelle said. “We’re talking about internships with city departments, joint training programs with local employers, and entrepreneurial partnerships that allow students to solve real-world problems right here in Grambling.

“This MOU is a formal affirmation of our mutual commitment to collaboration and progress. It ensures that our future is shaped not in silos, but side by side with aligned priorities and a spirit of cooperation.”

Lemelle also stressed that the MOU is only the beginning of strengthening the town and gown relationship for the good of all in Grambling.

“It’s important to recognize that this MOU is not a finish line — it’s a starting point,” Lemelle said. “It reflects a mutual understanding that our futures are intertwined and that we are strongest when we operate with unity and intention.

“I want this partnership to model what’s possible when a university and its surrounding community listen to one another, trust one another, and grow together.”

Increased state and federal appropriations, which rose to $54.32 million, demonstrate growing confidence in Grambling State’s leadership and impact across Louisiana and beyond.

Total operating expenses for the year reached $121.99 million, representing targeted investments that advance instruction, institutional support, and campus modernization.
