Mother/Daughter Duo Graduate Together Suzzon Jiles and her daughter Trinity graduated together, with Suzzon Jiles earning her bachelor’s degree in Child Development while Trinity Jiles was presented with a bachelor’s degree in Biology.

“Grambling State has changed my life,” Suzzon Jiles said. “I was inspired to become a child care worker/owner after being number two of 10 siblings. I helped my mom raise my younger siblings and loved teaching them as well. So, I’ve kind of been doing it most of my life.”

Two Grambling State Students Featured in EBONY STEM Queens Issue A pair of GSU students branched out nationwide as two of 11 women featured on the cover of EBONY Magazine, published on February 11, 2022. The pair were part of a commemorative print issue focusing on OLAY and EBONY’s HBCU STEM Queens competition highlighting successful students majoring in STEM fields. While the U.S. Census indicates that women fill almost 50% of the U.S. workforce, they only make up 27% of workers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields.

GSU students Destney Johnson, a Computer Information Systems major, and her cousin Taylor Johnson, a nursing major, are bucking that trend and their success in the classroom earned them the honor of being among the HBCU students highlighted by EBONY.

Destney Johnson chose GSU because the university recently became the first and only university to offer cybersecurity and cloud computing majors in Louisiana. Taylor Johnson said her interest in STEM came from one of her aunts who is an RN.

Persistence Pays Off

Mother of four receives degree 28 years later as daughter graduates high school, son recovers from fight with chronic kidney disease

Grambling State University (GSU) student Allison Hamilton of Monroe is inspired by so many things. We are inspired by her. Allison has overcome obstacle after obstacle to earn her degree in Computer Information Systems from GSU. Hamilton and her daughter Logan both walked their respective stages in May of 2022 – Allison with a bachelor’s degree and Logan with

a high school diploma from Neville High School in Monroe. Hamilton began work on her degree in 1994, but life had more in store for her. Raising four children, including her youngest son Cayman, who was born prematurely in 2008 and has battled chronic health issues since then, has not stopped Hamilton from achieving her dream. Her children came together to make graduation week special for Hamilton.

In July of 2021 Hamilton again resumed her studies. Soon enough, life placed another obstacle on her path toward graduation. On July 29, Cayman had to have both kidneys removed along with also undergoing a parathyroidectomy. Hamilton was unable to complete her class.

Hamilton started again in the fall before another call came in September that a transplant kidney had been found for Cayman. Unfortunately, doctors discovered that kidney was not suitable for transplant and the family was put back on the wait list. In October, another match was found, and Cayman underwent successful transplant surgery. Post-op recovery kept Hamilton and her son in New Orleans until early November. Hamilton spent the weeks looking for spots in the hospital where she could connect online and take her classes. Poe shares Hamilton’s excitement over the years of her hard work finally paying off. “Throughout my classes, Allison worked hard and completed her work,” Poe said. “She worked with her group mates and accomplished all she needed to do. Along the way, she blessed all of us with her presence and sweet spirit. She has now received her blessing. Her son received a kidney transplant and is improving daily. She has completed her degree in CIS. She is special. I feel I have received a blessing just by getting to know her.”

As one of the most decorated student-athletes to come from Grambling State, Kailey Pena’s determination and hard work led her to being one of the best Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) women’s soccer players in history. The Rio Rancho, New Mexico native leaves a legacy that includes being a four-time SWAC First Team selection, three-time SWAC alltournament team honoree and twotime SWAC postseason offensive player of the year. Two Grambling State University Faculty Members Selected to Write Biology Textbook

Education Resources (OERs) and interactive quiz and assessment elements for dual enrollment courses in Louisiana and nationally. The course materials will be released under a license that permits their free use, reuse, modification and sharing with others.

Open-source textbook will be free to high school students who have dual enrollment college classes Dr. Dagne Hill, head of the Department of Biological Sciences, and Dr. Waneene C. Dorsey, a biological sciences professor, have been selected to develop and write a college-level general biology textbook for high school students who will be attending college. The Louisiana Library Network (LOUIS) and the Louisiana Board of Regents received a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education for the Open Textbooks Pilot Program to help fund these efforts. This project will enable and enhance the delivery of Open

The project has the potential to reduce costs and to improve educational outcomes for approximately 20,000 high school students. The text may also be used in colleges across the nation. The biology textbook is one of 25 resources planned for the state’s general education courses. The project could not only reduce the cost of higher education but also eliminate early barriers to participation in post-secondary education due to textbook costs. Dr.’s Dorsey and Hill are pleased to co-author the textbook as a way to further recognize and facilitate diversity in science, thereby encouraging students to become scientists.

Professor and Students Forge Partnerships in Ghana

Grambling State University (GSU) Professor Dr. Aaron Livingston and eight GSU students traveled to Ghana to establish partnerships with three universities in the country. The partnerships will promote education, sports, and cultural enrichment. Meetings were held with officials and department heads at the University of Ghana, The University of Education, Winneba, and the University of Cape Coast to introduce partnerships between the universities and GSU. The focus is on student/faculty exchanges in Sports Administration and other disciplines.

The students actively participated in youth sport camps and coaching seminars, aligning with the vision of Healthy Life Global, a partner of GSU. The goal is to nurture personal and professional development among future leaders who promote progressive actions and healthy lifestyles beyond sports. The trip also included cultural enrichment activities, allowing the students to compare educational structures and sports cultures between the United States and Ghana. This trip follows a previous visit to Ghana in 2020, during which the team engaged with Ghanaian students, organized youth camps, clinics, and interacted with local schools. The relationships built during the trip encouraged future collaborations.

Grambling State University and Healthy Life Global have a partnership that began in the fall semester of 2018. The partnership reflects a commitment to educational and cultural exchange.

Jasmine Franklin, a mass communications senior, was honored with a special surprise check presentation by AT&T. Franklin was chosen as one of 25 students from HBCUs by AT&T for the inaugural Dream in Black Rising Future Makers Class. During the surprise presentation in the Atrium of the Black & Gold room, Franklin said, “Thank you all so much for gathering here today. I am overwhelmed and extremely honored. I am still in shock. Grambling has meant a lot to me as a third-generation Gramblinite.” Franklin further added, “I can’t thank AT&T enough for recognizing my efforts and awarding me $5,000. It is an incredible honor to be part of the inaugural class.” The AT&T Dream in Black Rising Future Makers highlights leaders of tomorrow. The initiative is about HBCU students innovating, influencing, driving culture and creating change.

History Major Selected as Scholar for White House Initiative on HBCUs Jordan Braithwaite, class of 2024, has been selected as an HBCU Scholar by the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. She is among 86 students from across the nation being recognized for their accomplishments in academics, leadership, civic engagement and more. Braithwaite is a history major with a concentration in law and society.

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a press release that the HBCU Scholars all have demonstrated remarkable dedication to their learning and exemplify the talent that Historically Black Colleges and Universities have nurtured for generations. “The students who hold this honor are committed to creating a more just and equitable society through their civic engagement,” Cardona said. “They are leaders and change-

makers in their communities, and I cannot wait to learn from them as they serve as ambassadors both for the White House Initiative and their institutions of higher education.”

Braithwaite, of St. Louis, Missouri, was chosen Freshman Class President, was Miss NAACP-elect for 202122 and served as a resident assistant. She is completing an internship with Greenwood Project, a nonprofit organization that strives to build a diversity pipeline for minority students to enter the financial services industry. Braithwaite was invited to attend the Annual National HBCU Week Conference which features workshops designed to help HBCU students learn practices in areas such as leadership, professional development, HBCU excellence, and workforce development.

Cutting-Edge Nursing Program Helps Ensure Student Success The Grambling State University School of Nursing is striving to grow the best in healthcare providers through cutting-edge education. The revamped program offers year-round learning, simulation labs, state-of-the-art equipment, and more, all to ensure that nursing students pass their National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) exam and move onto successful careers. The 12-month curriculum, which includes coursework in the summer, results in continuity of learning so students retain what they have learned during the year. This approach proved beneficial during

the COVID-19 pandemic when hospitals weren’t taking nursing students for clinical events (onsite interaction with real patients). GSU students finished up virtually, using the simulation and skills labs. The students were then able to go straight back to clinical trials in June 2020. The School of Nursing has been an important part of Grambling for over 30 years and has prepared more than 2,000 students to enter the healthcare field. The program was reaccredited in 2018, with the first cohort graduating seven students in 2021.

GSU Achieves Record Breaking Success, Raises Over $400,000 During 1901 Day of Giving Campaign In a remarkable show of support and unity, alumni, students, and friends of Grambling State University came together to propel GSU to extraordinary heights during the second annual 1901 Day of Giving. Organizers had set an ambitious goal of receiving 1,000 gifts, with funds earmarked for six crucial impact areas: Academic Excellence, Access and Opportunity, Annual Fund, Presidential Priorities, Student Experience and Engagement, and Tiger Athletics. What unfolded was nothing short of astounding - GSU shattered its own expectations by raising an astounding $415,099, a staggering 165% of the original goal. This achievement is even more remarkable considering the astounding 1,648 total gifts that were received, with 93% of these donors being brand new contributors. “The global reach of the Grambling

State University brand was evident and on full display during this year’s 1901 Day of Giving campaign,” beamed GSU’s Interim Vice President for University Advancement and Innovation. “Generous investments poured in from the GRAMFAM community and friends of the University, hailing from nearly every state in North America, as well as regions in Africa and Europe. I am immensely grateful to every individual who played a pivotal role in securing critical resources for Grambling - thank you for rising to the occasion.” What’s equally inspiring is that the average gift amount to the university stood at $251.88, and these donations fueled 32 studentcentered projects. GSU Achieves Major Energy Efficiency Win Grambling State University (GSU) is celebrating a major energy efficiency victory after receiving a $75,000 grant from Entergy Solutions. The grant will be used to fund energy efficiency upgrades across seven buildings on campus, which are expected to save the university over 661,000 kilowatthours and reduce electricity costs by more than $50,000 annually. The upgrades include new chillers and a building automation system. The building automation system will give GSU control over its HVAC equipment, allowing it to provide air conditioning and reduce usage during off-hours. This will help to create a more comfortable learning environment and reduce energy costs. “We are thrilled to receive this grant from Entergy Solutions,” said GSU President Rick Gallot. “These upgrades will help us save money, reduce our environmental impact, and create a more sustainable campus.” This is just the beginning for GSU’s energy efficiency journey. With the support of Entergy Solutions and other partners, GSU is well on its way to becoming a leader in energy efficiency.

Multi Platinum Recording Artist E-40 Donates $100,000 to GSU Multiplatinum recording artist and entrepreneur Earl “E-40” Stevens has returned to his alma mater, Grambling State University, to donate $100,000 to the Music department, the World Famed Tiger Marching Band, and the upkeep of the newly installed recording studio, which has been named in his honor. E-40, a Vallejo, California native, is a living hip-hop legend with several multiplatinum and gold studio albums, mixtapes, collaborations, and hit singles to his name. He also has a successful entrepreneurial career in the wine and spirits industry, with over 15 different offerings under his “Earl

Stevens Selections” line, as well as a new food brand called “Goon With The Spoon”. GSU President Rick Gallot expressed his gratitude for E-40’s donation, saying that it will help the university “continue to create bigger and better futures for our students.” GSU Vice President for University Advancement and Innovation Melanie Jones also thanked E-40 for his support, saying that his gift is “the driving force that keeps the university moving forward.” GSU Music department head Dr. Nikole Roebuck, who was instrumental in securing E-40’s donation, spoke about her first

interactions with the artist, saying that he is “very genuine” and that she knew from the moment she spoke to him that he was serious about giving back to his alma mater. E-40’s donation is a major win for Grambling State University and its students. The funds will help to ensure that the university’s Music department and World Famed Tiger Marching Band continue to thrive, and that students have access to the latest and greatest recording technology. Incredible Journey of Triumph: Nontraditional Student Overcomes Tragedy to Achieve Dream Degree Nicole Parker’s path to earning her college degree has been nothing short of extraordinary. Her story is a testament to the power of resilience and the pursuit of dreams. Nicole Parker, at the age of 49, is about to realize a dream that began in 1992. She will walk across the stage to receive her Bachelor’s degree in Childhood Development and Early Literacy from Grambling State University. Parker’s educational journey has seen its share of detours. She initially enrolled at GSU in Elementary Education but soon realized that it wasn’t the right time for her. Life took her in a different direction. However, in 2011, something inside her called for more. She returned to GSU, this time in the field of Child Development. She pursued her studies

for a few years, but in 2016, her financial aid ran out, forcing her to pause her educational journey once again. Despite these hurdles, Parker’s determination was unwavering. She returned to GSU. Her path took a heartbreaking turn in 2021 when tragedy struck. Her son, D’Angelo Roane, only 29 years old, was tragically murdered in Dallas. In the face of this heart-wrenching loss, Parker found her resolve. She decided to honor her son’s memory and fulfill her dream. Completing her degree became not only a personal achievement but a tribute to her son. As Parker prepares to cross the stage and receive her degree, she does so with her son’s memory close to heart. She believes that he has guided her, and she is determined to carry his legacy forward.

Hunt Forest Products Plants Seeds of Education at GSU

In a groundbreaking initiative, Hunt Forest Products LLC is sowing the seeds of education by establishing a remarkable $100,000 endowed undergraduate scholarship at Grambling State University (GSU). Named the “Hunt Forest Products LLC Endowed Scholarship,” this philanthropic endeavor is set to span a period of up to five years, creating lasting opportunities for students pursuing majors in Engineering Technology, Computer Science, Accounting, or Management. To be eligible for this lifechanging scholarship, candidates must be enrolled as full-time students at Grambling State, maintaining good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 grading scale, and demonstrate a financial need. Valedictorian’s Triumph at Grambling State University Leads to Job Offer GSU, a journey that began in 2019 as a freshman. A legacy student with family ties to Grambling State, Zubari felt the weight of tradition upon him, but it was the opportunity to join the inaugural Cybersecurity program that sealed the deal.

In a celebration of academic excellence and a bright future, Cazembe Zubari, with an impressive 4.0 GPA, has emerged as the valedictorian of Grambling State University’s Spring 2023 graduation ceremony. He is set to receive his bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, becoming a shining example of the university’s commitment to nurturing talent. Hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, Zubari is part of the pioneering class of Cybersecurity students at

“I had choices to attend around 20 different schools, but Grambling offered me the best scholarship opportunities,” Zubari explained. “During my brief campus tour, it became evident that Grambling was where I felt most comfortable and where I truly belonged.” Zubari found his passion in the cutting-edge field of Cybersecurity. His innate love for computers guided him. Cybersecurity was the perfect fit, and his journey to academic excellence began. Among Zubari’s favorite classes were Introduction to Cyber Security and Introduction to Computer Science, which introduced him to the vast worlds of these disciplines. These courses ignited his passion

and solidified his determination to pursue a career in Cybersecurity. The teachers and faculty members he encountered along the way left an indelible mark on his heart. As he prepares to graduate, Zubari’s next adventure awaits in Atlanta, which he considers home despite his Cincinnati roots. He has accepted a full-time job offer with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), a global professional services firm and one of the Big Four accounting firms. Zubari will focus on cyber-threat intelligence work, contributing to one of the world’s leading professional service networks. With a sense of nostalgia and excitement for the future, Zubari expressed his pride in the transformation he underwent at Grambling State. He recognized that the university made him a better person and instilled values that will stay with him as he embarks on the next chapter of his life.

Buffalo Bills Coach Donates $30,000 In a heartwarming display of gratitude and giving back, NFL coaching veteran Eric Washington, a proud alumnus of Grambling State University (GSU), has made an exceptional $30,000 donation to the university’s GAP Scholarship Fund. His generous donation to the GAP Scholarship Fund is a testament to the impact GSU had on his life. GAP scholarships, made possible through foundation funding and the kindness of donors, play a crucial role in assisting students in their final semesters who have exhausted all other financial aid options. These scholarships bridge the financial gap needed to help these students graduate and pursue their dreams. Washington’s connection to GSU runs deep, and he acknowledges the university’s founding premise of nurturing future educators.

Four Students to Compete in Prestigious Competition Four Grambling State University (GSU) students are poised to make a splash in the world of entrepreneurship as they compete in the prestigious “Moguls in the Making” competition. Katrice McMullen, Brendan Nzoma, Darielle Clark, and Alesia Jackson were selected from a competitive pool of applicants to represent GSU in this nationwide event.

The competition is designed to identify and support the best and brightest entrepreneurial minds from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The GSU team will be tasked with developing solutions to economic problems facing various industries and then pitching their ideas to a panel of expert judges. The GSU team is confident in their ability to succeed in the competition. They have a diverse range of skills and experiences, and they are passionate about making a difference in the world.

Faith Carr Named HistoryMakers Student Ambassador Grambling State University senior Faith Kelly Carr (History) has been selected as a 2022-2023 Student Ambassador for The HistoryMakers, the nation’s largest African American video oral history archive. Carr is one of only 14 Student Ambassadors chosen from across the country to represent their respective campuses in this prestigious program. The HistoryMakers Digital Archive is a state-of-the-art electronic resource that provides unique access to stories recorded across the U.S. As a Student Ambassador, Carr will play a vital role in promoting awareness and use of The archive on Grambling State’s campus. Carr is excited to represent GSU and to promote the archive; she believes it is an essential resource for students, faculty, and the community alike.

Retired energy executive gives $10,000 to benefit alma mater, continue legacy of philanthropy Larry Payne grew up in north Louisiana before enjoying a majorly successful career in the energy industry, but it was the years he spent as a student at Grambling State University (GSU) that made one of the biggest impacts on his life. Now a retired 38-year career in the energy industry, Payne is still making an impact as CEO of LESA & Associates, LLC, a private Energy Consulting Company. But Payne might have made an even bigger impact at Grambling State University in recent years, including a $10,000 donation made to his college alma mater. In 2017, Payne decided it was time to give back to Grambling State, and he started by making a $50,000 donation to the university. Williams’ love of Grambling of Grambling’s unofficial historians became so strong that in 1980 she garnered the attention of the published the book “Grambling: A Louisiana Legislature. Pictorial History.” Williams was recognized by the Louisiana Senate and House of Representatives on May 12, 2022 while she was in Baton Rouge visiting daughter Alicia Williams, a 1983 Grambling State University graduate, and Senior Special Assistant to Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards.

“That book was the work of love,” Williams said. “I love meeting people and getting to know them. I love history and learning about the past in hopes of making the future better. And I love Grambling, so putting the book together was fun. It was the work of love.”

GSU President Rick Gallot accepted the award on behalf of the university at the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet in January 2022. The CVB has worked closely with Grambling State in recent years, particularly during events such as the NAIA Football National Championship games and the Brown Girls Do Gymnastics Conference.

Grambling State Earns Future Forward Change Champion Award from HBCUgrow Grambling State University was honored for winning the LEAD: Future Forward Change Champion Award from HBCUgrow.

“During the onset of the pandemic, there were so many other schools that did not have the wherewithal to sustain the student populations on campus,” Gallot said. “One of our peer institutions had less than 350 students on campus and we had close to 2,000.”

The award, presented at the annual HBCUgrow LEAD Conference in Richmond, Va., is to recognize HBCUs that did a good job of pivoting to address recent challenges and positioning in their schools for future growth. The challenges Grambling State faced during COVID and how the university responded played a significant role in earning the honor.

Recent upgrades to the IT infrastructure prior to the pandemic made it possible to offer a strong wireless connection to resident students while a laptop loan program aided off-campus students with taking online courses. Campus living and housing also adjusted their in-person programming to a virtual format to stay connected.

“The real credit has to go to everybody who played a part and this was truly a team effort,” said President Rick Gallot. “Everybody who served on our COVID response team – from academic affairs to information technology, student affairs, food service – everyone played an instrumental role in responding to something that none of us ever thought we would have encountered in our lifetime.”

Ellis, who led the Tigers to three SWAC Championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances during his 26-year tenure as head coach, was honored by friends, family, and former players. Ellis’ No. 31 jersey will be the second jersey to be retired by the Grambling State baseball program, joining the No. 30 jersey of former Grambling State President and baseball coach Ralph Waldo Emerson Jones. GSU has launched a program in partnership with WellAhead Louisiana to empower residents, students, and faculty to prevent type 2 diabetes. The program, called Change Your Lifestyle. Change Your Life. (CYL2), offers virtual lifestyle change classes to individuals with prediabetes, with the goal of ultimately reducing heart attacks, strokes, blindness, kidney failure, and limb amputation. By incorporating healthy habits into daily life, participants can reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by over 50%. The program also addresses other chronic conditions like high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Among a select group of 20 schools Grambling State is at the forefront of addressing the alarming cybersecurity talent shortage in the U.S., which has left a staggering 500,000 cybersecurity jobs unfilled. Professor, Students Monitor Coronavirus in Southern U.S. Dr. Paul Kim, associate professor of biological sciences at GSU, lead research projects on COVID-19 in underserved communities. One project involved monitoring the virus in wastewater to understand its presence in the community, while the other focused on genomic sequencing to track its evolution and spread. Two undergraduate students from the School of Social Work assisted in the research. One of the project’s goals was to increase sequencing efforts in the southern U.S., where there is a lag in viral sequencing. The team partnered with clinics to sequence the virus and shared the data with researchers. The result has been more data that can be used to monitor the coronavirus. The research also served as a model for other communities to establish their own genomic surveillance programs.

Call Me MiSTER® Program Receives Historic $2M in Federal Funding

Grambling State has received a $499,500 grant from the National Science Foundation for their project “iMed-Sec.”

Led by Dr. Babu Baniya, the project focuses on securing the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), which involves interconnected medical devices. Security concerns surrounding implantable and wearable devices and medical data privacy are the main focus. The iMed-Sec project will explore energy-efficient and low-overhead security solutions for IoMT devices. The researchers will develop protocols and systems to enhance cybersecurity while minimizing energy consumption. In addition to the technical work, the project will create educational materials and training modules to incorporate IoMT cybersecurity into STEM undergraduate programs. The iMed-Sec project will provide students with training in smart healthcare and increase participation of HBCU students in STEM education and research.

Grambling State’s “Call Me MiSTER®” program will receive $2 million in federal funding as part of the annual federal budget for Louisiana’s Fifth Congressional District. The program, originally founded at Clemson University in 2000, strives to increase the pool of available teachers from a more diverse background, particularly for the lowest-performing elementary schools.

Department of History Receives $94K Grant GSU Department of History has been awarded a $94,817 grant by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC). The grant will be used for a digital oral history project called “Voices of Grambling: A Digital Oral History Project,” which aims to document the African American experience in northern Louisiana. The project will be led by Dr. Edward Holt, along with other professors and instructors from GSU. They will collaborate with GSU undergraduates and scholars from various institutions to preserve the voices of historically disadvantaged populations that have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19. The grant is part of a $2.5 million initiative called Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan (SHARP) Act of 2021, which aims to support higher education and the humanities sector in recovering from the impact of the pandemic.

The Doug Williams Center Supports Movement to Restore Jim Thorpe as the Sole Gold Medalist for His 1912 Olympic Victories (IOC) recognized his achievements, but named him a “cowinner” of the gold in spite of his tripling the score of his nearest competitor in the pentathlon and winning the decathlon by 688 points. The Doug Williams Center has conducted new research to support the movement to restore Jim Thorpe as the sole gold medalist for his victories in the pentathlon and decathlon at the 1912 Olympics. The Center collaborated with Thorpe biographer Bob Wheeler and Dr. Florence Ridlon, co-founders of the Jim Thorpe Foundation, to tell the untold story of the injustices faced by Thorpe, a Native American athlete who excelled in 22 sports. According to the case study, Thorpe was illegally stripped of his Olympic 1912 pentathlon and decathlon medals because of his ethnicity. In 1982, the International Olympic Committee

Biology Professor and Students Awarded $670K to Develop New Cancer Treatments Grambling State University Biology Professor Dr. Waneene C. Dorsey and a team of her students have been awarded a $670,204 grant from the National Science Foundation to develop new cancer treatments. The grant will support a three-year joint research project with Southern University Baton Rouge to train underrepresented minority students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to pursue graduate studies in the Environmental Toxicology Ph.D. program at SUBR. Dr. Dorsey and her team are specifically focused on identifying autophagy genes that cause cancer cells to thrive. Once these genes have been identified, they will use various chemicals to stop their gene expression by blocking them with certain chemicals. These chemicals could then become potential anticancer medicines. The GSU students involved in the project will receive a $6,000 stipend for a summer internship at Southern, which will include room and board. Dr. Dorsey said that she is excited about the potential of this research to make a real difference in the fight against cancer. She also believes that the project is important

for training the next generation of scientists from underrepresented minority backgrounds. “We’re proud of this team, this program, and what these students are accomplishing,” said Dr. Dorsey. “And what kind of work could be more important than finding a way to stop cancer? These students are working on creating better futures for not only themselves but everyone in the world who is and has been affected by cancer.” This research is a testament to the commitment of Grambling State University to excellence in teaching and research. Grambling State Receives $75,000 Grant to Empower Student Parents

Grambling State University proudly announces its selection as one of eight esteemed Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) chosen to collaborate with Ascend at the Aspen Institute’s Black and Native Family Futures Fund. This transformative capacity-building fund extends essential financial support and specialized technical assistance to select HBCUs and TCUs dedicated to enhancing the well-being of their student parents. GSU and the other seven institutions are set to receive a substantial $75,000 grant coupled with expert technical guidance to catalyze initiatives benefiting student parents within their campuses. Each institution’s strategies will be enriched by the insights and input of an enrolled student parent who will serve as an advisor on the project.

As a pivotal element of this initiative, GSU is committed to reopening its campus child development center, which closed in 2009 due to inadequate funding. The university is poised to provide early literacy programs and developmentally appropriate science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) curricula to the children enrolled in the center.

Improvements to Financial Controls Continue Grambling State University President Richard J. Gallot, Jr. is determined to continue improving the future growth and financial health of the institution and is encouraged by the progress indicated in the recent release of audit findings for the period 7/1/2019 – 6/30/2021 by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor (LLA). Key highlights of the audit include improved financial footing with steady revenues and expenses, increased federal revenues due to pandemic funds received, and increased enrollment. The university has implemented measures to address the noted areas for improvement which include ensuring appropriate access to the University’s financial management system, ensuring monthly reconciliations as required by federal regulations, ensuring adequate controls for an accurate return of Title IV funds, and ensuring documented risk assessment and safeguards to address safeguarding student information. $1.5M Debt Forgiveness

Using funds from the American Rescue Act Plan, Grambling State University forgave student debt for those with current semester balances from spring 2020 through summer 2021. To be eligible, the debt balance had to be the obligation of the student and not a third-party. The amount of debt forgiven totaled $1.5 million. The cancellation of this debt helped students facing financial and emotional challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing them to continue their educations and propel economic mobility.
