Message from the President

Dear Graduates, Families, and Friends,

It is my distinct honor to welcome you to Grambling State University’s Spring 2026 Commencement ceremony as we celebrate our graduates and recognize the Golden Reunion Class of 1976. This occasion is especially meaningful as the University marks its 125th anniversary year.

For more than a century, Grambling State University has stood as a beacon of opportunity, excellence, and resilience. Since our founding in 1901, this institution has transformed lives, empowered generations, and advanced a proud tradition grounded in academic achievement, leadership, and service. Today, graduates join a distinguished community of alumni who carry forward the enduring spirit of Grambling State University—The Place “Where Everybody is Somebody.”

Graduates, your journey to this moment has required dedication, perseverance, and sacrifice. You have met challenges with determination and demonstrated the character that defines a Grambling State Tiger. As you cross this stage, you do so not only as recipients of a degree, but as stewards of a legacy that continues to shape this institution and its future.

We also proudly recognize the Golden Class of 1976 on the occasion of your 50-year reunion. Your contributions and accomplishments continue to inspire the generations that follow.

As you embark upon your next chapter, I encourage you to lead with purpose, serve with integrity, and pursue excellence in all that you do. The future will be shaped by your vision, your voice, and your commitment to making a difference.

To our families, faculty, and supporters—thank you for the encouragement and guidance you have provided to our graduates along the way. Your role in their success is immeasurable.

On behalf of the entire Grambling State University community, congratulations to the Class of 2026. May your future be filled with continued success, meaningful impact, and the enduring pride of being Grambling State University graduates.

Major: Elementary Education

GPA: 4.0

Hometown: New Orleans, Louisiana

Name of Parents: Sonja Shelton (Mother) and Annias Allen (Father)

Organizations and Affiliations: Earl Lester Cole Honors College

Awards and Honors: Future Educator Honor Roll

Greatest Achievement: Passing all PRAXIS teacher certification exams on the first attempt, achieving a maximum score of 200 on the PRAXIS math subtest.

Future Plans: Return to my home city, New Orleans, to teach the next generation of leaders.

A memorable moment at GSU: Spending over 5 hours talking with one of my first and closest friends in McCall Dining Hall.

How will you give back to GSU, the community, etc. once you graduate? The head of my department stated that the greatest way to give back is to keep in touch. Dr. Ellen Smiley expressed the same sentiment at the Honors College Jacket Ceremony. I plan to keep in touch with the professors who made this honor possible. Namely, Mr. Taylor, Ms. Ezelle, and Dr. Newman. I hope to collaborate with my professors and ask them how to best give back. Hopefully, I can provide them with things as impactful as what they have provided for me.

Highest-Ranking Graduate

Wymeko Williams, Jr.

Major: Accounting

GPA: 4.0

Hometown: Mansfield, Texas

Name of Parents: Leatrice Williams (Mother) and Wymeko Williams (Father)

Organizations and Affiliations: Keeper of Records for the Gamma Psi chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.; Treasurer for the Epsilon Rho chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Inc.; Former President of the Omicron Lambda Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity of America, Inc.; Thomas & Joyce Moorehead College of Business & Entrepreneurship Student Ambassador; Master Drill Sergeant and Saxophone Section Leader in the Grambling State University World Famed Tiger Marching Band; Member of the Earl Lester Cole Honors College

Awards and Honors: William Wiley, Jr. Award for Outstanding Leadership in the World Famed Tiger Marching Band, Turner Construction Tuition Assistance Program Scholarship Recipient, President’s List for Academic Achievement (8 times)

Greatest Achievement: My greatest achievement has been maintaining a high grade point average while still being heavily involved on campus.

Future Plans: Following graduation, I will return to Dallas, TX, to work as an Accountant for Turner Construction Company. I will later return to graduate school to pursue a master’s degree in Accounting, becoming eligible for the CPA exam and becoming a Certified Public Accountant. I ultimately seek to become an entrepreneur by opening my own tax firm and owning rental property.

A memorable moment at GSU: My most memorable moment at GSU was the first day of band camp on July 19, 2022. I was excited to finally be in college and to start a new chapter in my life. I arrived on campus early that morning and reported to the Performing Arts Center for check-in. I then picked up my room key and walked up to my room on the third floor of Holland Hall. Later that evening, I said goodbye to my parents, got dressed in my white T-shirt, black shorts, white socks, and black shoes, and walked to the PAC for our first night of drills. Coming to an HBCU and being in the band, I knew it was going to be hard work, but I felt ready. I gained a group of close friends who I can call my siblings for life.

How will you give back to GSU, the community, etc. once you graduate? I plan to make a yearly donation to the World Famed Tiger Marching Band. I will also return to Grambling to help recruit more College of Business Majors for internship and full-time employment opportunities at Turner Construction Company.

Highest-Ranking Graduate

Nyic’Quavayion Willis

Major: Criminal Justice

GPA: 4.0

Hometown: Las Vegas, Nevada

Name of Parents: Shaquilla Willis (Mother) and Nicholas Brown (Father)

Organizations and Affiliations: Chief (President) of The HBCU Promise, Inc., Democracy Fellow for the Campus Vote Project, Student Representative for the Caleb Wilson Hazing Prevention Task Force, Member of Gamma Psi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Safe Hayvnn Foundation Fellow, Congressional Intern for Senator Jacky Rosen and Congressman Steven Horsford, Coca-Cola UNITED Intern

Awards and Honors: Over 95+ Scholarships Awarded, Congressional Black Caucus Alumni, Thurgood Marshall Scholar, Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus Scholar, ETS Lenora Green Scholar, GSU Student Excellence Awardee

Greatest Achievement: My greatest and personal achievement is that I’ve overcome the limiting belief that my identity and future were confined solely to career pathways like sports.

Future Plans: Upon graduation, I will be attending the University of San Diego, where I have been accepted into the #1 Master of Arts in Social Innovation program in the country on a full-ride scholarship through the Kroc School of Peace Studies’ HBCU Changemaker Fellowship. Following completion of my master’s program, I plan to immediately enroll in law school to pursue my Juris Doctor (JD). After earning my degree and passing the bar exam, I intend to begin my legal career.

A memorable moment at GSU: On my first day, I discovered I had a $4,000 balance. My mentor pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and talk to an administrator—and I did. As a result, I had my tuition covered the same day. That moment sparked my love for Grambling, which showed me how much the faculty truly cared about my education.

How will you give back to GSU, the community, etc. once you graduate? I plan to give back to Grambling by staying closely connected with the alumni network and contributing in any capacity needed. I also intend to support students in their post-graduate transitions by offering guidance and sharing my blueprint with those pursuing similar paths.

Beyond campus, I hope to become politically involved in ways that strengthen the Grambling community by expanding access to resources and opportunities.

Academic Regalia

Academic regalia is a longstanding symbol of scholarly achievement and academic tradition. Worn during commencement and other formal academic ceremonies by degree candidates, faculty, and academic officials, regalia reflects the degree earned, the academic discipline, and the institution conferring the degree.

Traditional regalia includes a gown, cap, and, for advanced degrees, a hood. The style of the gown distinguishes the level of degree, while the hood provides additional meaning: its lining represents the institution, and the velvet trim identifies the wearer’s academic field of study.

Academic colors are designated as follows:

Arts, Humanities, & Social Sciences

White

Business .......................................................................... Drab

Criminal Justice ........................................................... Purple

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Royal Blue

Education............................................................... Light Blue

Engineering Technology ........................................... Orange

Mass Communication Crimson

Music ................................................................................ Pink

Nursing ....................................................................... Apricot

Public Administration .................................... Peacock Blue

Science Bright Gold

Social Work .................................................................. Citron

The President’s Medallion

The President’s Medallion is a distinguished symbol of the office, crafted in bronze and bearing the official seals of both the University and the State of Louisiana. It is worn exclusively by the President during formal ceremonies, representing the authority and responsibilities of the office. The chain of the medallion is engraved with the names of past presidents, symbolizing the continuity and legacy of leadership within the University.

The Alumni Pledge

I (state your name), a proud graduate of Grambling State University, pledge to uphold and advance the good name of my alma mater. I commit to its core values, to remain engaged with the University, and to support the advancement of educational opportunities for future generations.

The University Mace

The University Mace is a ceremonial staff symbolizing the authority of the institution and the tradition of academic governance. Adorned with elements reflecting the University’s history, it serves as a visible representation of Grambling State University’s heritage and commitment to scholarship. Its presence signifies that a formal, faculty-sanctioned assembly is in session, and it leads the academic procession.

The mace is traditionally carried by the University Marshal, Dr. Connie Walton, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. For this ceremony, it is borne by Dr. Carolyn Marshall-Jackson, who serves as Honorary Marshal in recognition of her distinguished contributions to teaching, research, and service. Dr. Marshall-Jackson is the Arlynne Lake Cheers Endowed Professor in Education, Associate Professor in the Department of Developmental and Higher Education Studies, and Chair of the Institutional Review Board at Grambling State University.

The Alma Mater

Ole Grambling, dear Grambling, We love thee, dear ole Grambling. We’re loyal to thee, our dear ole School, We’ll fight for thee for evermore. And when life’s game is fought and won, The hills will ring with victory’s song. Ole Grambling, dear Grambling, We love thee, dear ole Grambling.

Ole Grambling, dear Grambling, We love thee, dear ole Grambling. Long may thee stand ‘til all the land Has felt the worth of thy great hand. And when thy sons to battle go, The hills will ring from shore to shore. Ole Grambling, dear Grambling, We love thee, dear ole Grambling.

Lift Ev’ry Voice & Sing

Lift ev’ry voice and sing, ‘Til earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise

High as the list’ning skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on ‘til victory is won.

The Star-Spangled Banner

O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming. Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly, streaming. And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there

O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
