LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear Graland Community,
Last year, I felt grateful when I could look up from COVID concerns and focus on the future. The strategic planning process allowed me this opportunity, and I appreciated everyoneβs engagement and insight as we worked from draft to draft to a finalized plan.
One reason I was able to look to the horizon was because of the strong position of the school. Over the three school years significantly impacted by COVID, I knew that we would have the resources to meet the challenge, whether the need was teacher training, technology, safety, or staffing. The Graland Family of Funds, as detailed on page 22 and 23, displays support for those and other priorities. Without the generosity of this community, I would have been even more immersed in the crisis, unable to have the space to envision Gralandβs strategic path forward.
Looking over the Gratitude Report, I know that we have the community engagement to follow our strategic framework to inspire students, empower educators, engage families and cultivate a culture of belonging. I specifically want to acknowledge the impressive annual fund effort of Development Committee Chair Kate Gulick, Director of Development Jessica Goski, and the entire Development Committee, who exceeded their goal by a significant margin.
Now that we have a framework to guide us into the future, I am excited to see how many mountains we can climb as we direct this communityβs energy and generosityβits time, talent, and treasureβtoward those strategic goals. Knowing how fully you have engaged over the last three challenging years, I am confident that we will spin the pinwheel of the strategic plan and thrive.

Each year, every student at Graland receives a Lower School or Middle School buddy to partner with for fun and engaging activities throughout the year. Here, Kindergarten and Grade 4 buddies got together to play mini golf on the course that the fourth graders created in math class!
LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT
Dear Graland Community,
As I reflect on all that took place during the 2021-22 school year, I have a tremendous sense of gratitude, especially for Graland traditions, including class trips, the Grade 5 Knighting Ceremony, the Grade 2 Biography Expo, Kindergarten Rodeo, and the Gates Expo. Every time I attend one of these events, such as the Knighting ceremony (a 77-year-old Graland tradition), I am reminded of all the work that goes into keeping these traditions alive and the tremendous gratitude I have for the entire Graland team. The dedication of faculty, support faculty, staff, administration, support personnel, maintenance personnel, and our entire school community all come together to make Graland a very special and inspiring place for our children.
Adding the various support groups (GPA, Alumni Association and multiple others) to the above-mentioned day-to-day team makes an incredible recipe for a school of which I am immensely proud to be a small part.
As my time as a trustee has come to an end, I would like to express my gratitude to departing trustee Michelle Eidson for her years of service and incredible leadership, specifically with respect to the schoolβs strategic plan. I would also like to welcome Jill Barkin and Lauren Davis to the Board of Trustees, who were elected to the board in May. Adam Farver β92 officially began his term as board president on July 1, 2022, and I look forward to all he will accomplish during his time in this role.
It has been an honor and a privilege serving the board and the entire community over the past eight years as a trustee. Hereβs to another wonderful school year!
Sincerely,
Bernie Dvorak

VOLUNTEERS
Graland is grateful for all the parent, grandparent and alumni volunteers who shared their time and talent with the school during the 2021-22 year. Graland would not be the same without these community members who are generous in spirit, sharing themselves with our students, faculty and staff. Thank you!
Graland has increased its effort to recognize volunteers. The school apologizes to any volunteer whose name may have been inadvertently omitted. Please contact Jeri Volpe at 303-399-8370 or jvolpe@graland.org to report any errors or omissions.

Volunteer Spotlight: Christine Loeffler
Christine Loeffler keeps one foot on Gralandβs campus at all times. She has probably opened your car door during carline, handed you a fudge bar at an ice cream social, or been behind the scenes of your favorite Graland event.
As a full-time mother to her two sons, Preston (Grade 1) and Lincoln (Grade 3), and a fitness instructor at The Bar Method, Christine still finds the time to give back to Graland through volunteer service with the Graland Parent Association.
Though Christine didnβt grow up in Denver, her husband, Anthony, attended high school at Kent Denver and knew many Graland alumni. As they searched for an elementary school, they kept returning to Graland, attracted to its tightknit community and dedicated educators. βWe really wanted that community,β Christine said.
The Loefflersβ oldest began in Kindergarten, while their youngest started in the ECLC. It didnβt take long for both to blossom in their classrooms. For Christine, the way her children thrived at school was the most valuable part of being at Graland. βWhen I drop them off, I know theyβre going to have a great day,β Christine said. βI just donβt worry about anything.β
In return for this invaluable gift, Christine sought out every opportunity to give back to Graland, and her efforts did not go unnoticed. This past year, she was honored with
the GPAβs βRookie Award,β which is given to a new parent volunteer who demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to Graland and to the Parent Association. Throughout her time as a parent volunteer, Christine has been a regular on campus and key to the operations of the GPA. βI believe we are only going to get out of Graland what we put into it,β Christine said. βIt makes me happy to be a part of something, and the GPA makes it very easy to be involved.β
Christine also emphasized that all members of the Graland community are integral to the experience, and she enjoys volunteering because she can meet new people in every capacity.
Everyone has something different to give Graland, from the people who choose to volunteer to the people who get involved in other ways, and they are all a vital part of this community. βIf there is a little bit of myself that I can give to help, in whatever capacity, I want to do it,β Christine said.
In addition to Christineβs dedication on campus, her husband, Anthony, also gives back to Graland by volunteering as an Annual Fund Grade Representative and on the Campus and Facilities board sub committee at school. Graland is grateful for the involvement of the Loeffler family and to all who dedicate a portion of their time to the school community.

2021-22 LOYALTY GIVING
The Graland Loyalty Society was established to recognize donors who give to Graland for five or more consecutive years. Society members receive special recognition in our annual Gratitude Report. Membership is based on household giving each fiscal year (July 1 - June 30) and gifts of any amount count toward Graland Loyalty Society membership.
Graland is incredibly grateful for its most loyal donors who choose to give year after year. These donors are recognized for their long-standing commitment to the school.

Kent and Elizabeth Lund: Loyal Support & Lifelong Connection
The Lund Family joined Gralandβs community in the fall of 2003. Their commitment to, and gratitude for, the school have remained constant ever since. Kent Lund shared, βWe will be grateful forever that our son (Pierson β12) attended Graland from Kindergarten through Grade 8. Thank you, teachers, staff, and administrators.β He added: βOne of my sisters is a professional educator who believes that a high-quality education is derived principally from three critical overarching factors: 1) high teacher quality, 2) small class size, and 3) strong parental support for students, teachers and the school. Graland? Check, check and check.β
Elizabeth is an attorney, Kent currently serves as the Interim CEO, Co-Head of Investment Banking, CoCCO for GVC Capital LLC and Pierson β12 is now a software engineer at Microsoft. βMy best way to describe Graland for our son is that he just thrived there, in every way,β shared Elizabeth. βGraland provided a strong, substantive foundation on which he built and relied for everything (school, work, relationships, etc.) that followed his time at Graland,β Kent added.
When asked about their motivation for continued philanthropic support of the school beyond Piersonβs graduation from Graland, Elizabeth and Kent highlighted what a remarkably nurturing, caring environment Graland was for their son and all students. Elizabeth also stated, βGraland is a life-long experience. It is your childβs first school, and the most special. This is where your child finds out who they are, with outstanding and personable teachers and stellar resources. Here, your child develops intellect, character, creativity, and physical coordination and abilities.β Kent agreed and added, βWe hope that in some small ways our annual financial support for Graland will help provide for many other students the wonderful academic, athletics, social and community experiences from which our son benefitted so much.β
Elizabeth, Pierson and Kent Lund on the day of Piersonβs Graland graduation, June 1, 2012.
The Lunds believe that strong parental involvement and support are essential for an outstanding Graland student experience and the health of its entire community. βWe respectfully encourage past, current and future Graland parents to be engaged proactively, in ways big and small, to help Graland thrive.β
Kent reflected, βOur appreciation, affection and support for Graland did not end when our son graduated after eighth grade. There is an old song by the Beach Boys, called βBe True to Your School.β We believe in that sentiment for Graland on an ongoing basis!β
Elizabeth and Kent recognize that their relationship with Graland continues today. They value their familyβs lifelong connection with the school and their son, Pierson β12, now sees his opportunity to reconnect with Graland after returning to Denver. Elizabeth said, βGraland has been an important part of the Denver landscape for almost 100 years and will be there for many years to come. We are proud to continue to be a part of the Graland community.β
Graland is grateful for Kent and Elizabethβs meaningful and most loyal giving for more than 18 years. For more information about the Graland Loyalty Society, please contact Jessica Goski at 303-336-3705.

During a field trip to Mi Pueblo Market (a grocery store with Latin American specialities), Grade 3 students got to put their language skills to the test by completing a scavenger hunt. During the activity, each team was given a shopping list with specific food and drink items (listed in Spanish) to look for, as well as a set budget. After paying for their items, the students returned to Graland for a fiesta!

Demonstrating Appreciation: Drew Meyers and Melissa Cheong
For Melissa Cheong and Drew Meyers, moving to Colorado from New York City was a change of pace. Six years ago, Melissa and Drew moved their three boys, Graham (Grade 2), Sebastian (Grade 8), and Quinn (β21), from Lower Manhattan to Colorado, and now, they are proud to call Denver βhome.β
Melissa and Drew credit Graland for helping their children feel at home in Colorado. Melissa, a managing partner at Blackhorn Ventures, and Drew, a partner at Seaport Capital, often travel for work, and both had heard positive reviews about Graland from various alumni they had met in Denver and beyond. Drew shared that after meeting Graland alumni in places like New York, San Francisco, and London, it was evident that it was time for a tour and to see what the school was all about. βTo hear that this school has such an expansive community was what struck us, even before we had the chance to walk the grounds,β Drew said. When they finally visited campus, their regard for the Graland community only grew. βWe felt so welcomed when we met the people here. There was a real authenticity,β he continued. Melissa agreed, adding that having all of her children in one school solidified their sense of community and belonging. βWhen we were able to get all three boys into Graland, it really changed things,β Melissa said. βThere was continuity, and we were able to be a part of one, cohesive community.β
A few years after they joined Graland, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and amidst the struggle and uncertainty, Melissa and Drew felt comforted by the schoolβs tireless commitment to its students, educators, and families. βOne of the things that blew us away was what the entire organization and teaching body pulled off,β Drew said, reflecting on the experience. βSometimes an institution needs to be responsive, and Graland continued to put the development of the child first.β Drew and Melissa also noted the impressive continuity of education and structure, even while constantly pivoting to confront new challenges. Their oldest son, Quinn (β21), had a different experience with many of the culminating events that had previously defined the end of Middle School, but Graland was able to keep him engaged and purposeful throughout. βWe were disappointed for him, but he stayed super connected with both teachers and students during that period of time,β Drew said. Even with increased constraints on learning, Quinn entered into his freshman year at Kent Denver School confident in his abilities, passions, and talents. βThatβs something that definitely came out of Graland: his agency and his desire
to be accountable,β Melissa said. βIt was noticeable how prepared he was to lean into this new chapter.β
Watching their three sons thrive at Graland made Drew and Melissaβs decision to contribute to the Graland Annual Fund an easy one. βAfter seeing the impact that the teaching body has had here on our kids, it kind of goes without question,β Drew said. Even beyond wanting to show their appreciation for the school, though, Melissa and Drew know how many resources it takes to help a community succeed, and they wanted to support Gralandβs ability to keep providing an impactful educational experience for students and their families. βWeβve both served on different committees, so weβve gotten brief glimpses into how much time, energy, and effort goes into making sure this community is inclusive and diverse, and does so with a high degree of professionalism,β Melissa said. βItβs our way of being a cheerleader and showing appreciation,β Drew said. βIt feels like a small thing to do.β

A common theme that resonated with all of us was how Graland not only educated our kids and instilled values but also taught them the importance of community. Graland was physically around the corner from our house and probably the first community my girls were a part of. That need to build community has followed them through high school, college and their careers and living situations post college.

I continue to support the community of learners that comprise Graland because they prize how something is taught as much, or even more, than they appreciate what is taught. They seek to both model and develop the habits and skills of composing meaningful questions and seeking valid answers, and these are invaluable lifelong skills.

βWe knew that Graland was the school for our family from the very first tour. Graland is quite clearly a family school where children are included, encouraged, and nurtured. James and Dylan love going to school every single day. Even in these young and formative stages of development, they are becoming curious, self-assured, compassionate citizens.β

Knighting has been a Graland tradition for 77 years, and it remains a rite of passage for Grade 5 students today. Students prepare for the formal ceremonies by learning about medieval life in their history classes, designing and painting their own shields, and accomplishing tasks at home that teach them about selflessness and service.
ALUMNI
Dear Graland Alumni Community,
It has been an honor and pleasure to work with fellow Graland Alumni Board (GAB) members as well as the school leadership to represent, support, and engage with Graland alumni. During the 2021-22 school year the Alumni Board prioritized welcoming alumni back to campus while likewise furthering our virtual offerings so that alumni outside of the Denver metro area could remain engaged and connected with Graland.
Graland Alumni Connections:
We are so proud of the strong connection so many alumni have to Graland and how so many of these alumni continue to stay involved and play critical roles at the school to this day. This includes:
β’ 56 current parents are Graland alumni
β’ 7 trustees are Graland alumni
β’ 18 former trustees are Graland alumni
β’ 6 grandparents are Graland alumni
β’ 3 faculty/staff members are Graland alumni
β’ 22 alumni board members
Alumni Event Participants:
It is with immense gratitude that I also thank the more than 200 alumni who attended the alumni annual events that were held both in person and virtually:
β’ The Fall Cocktail Party honoring the 2022 Nancy Nye Priest Alumni award recipient, Ken Cooper β70
β’ The winter Young Alumni event

Thank You, Alumni Donors
I am pleased to report that 253 alumni showed their support for Graland by making gifts to the school in 2021-22. Of those donors, more than 60, ranging from the class of 19532021, collectively contributed more than $25,000 including matching funds during our first-ever Graland Alumni Giving Day on 2/22/2022.
Alumni gifts were directed to the Graland Annual Fund, financial aid, the school Archives, the Inspire Campaign for faculty compensation, the Nancy Nye β39 Priest Memorial Fund, the Bradley Thomas Memorial Fund, and the Robert Romero Scholarship Fund. It is affirming to see alumni demonstrate their chance to βpay it forwardβ by making gifts to support todayβs students and teachers!
Get Connected, Get Involved
I encourage you to reach out to me or to any Alumni Board member listed here to learn more about the GAB and the many ways that you can get involved. We would be happy to suggest ideas, events, or volunteer opportunities where you can immediately play a role in supporting Graland and its ever-growing alumni community.
And please do not let the passage of time or the fact that you may live outside of Denver be a hesitation to get reconnected with Graland. We want alumni involvement across the decades and from across the globe! We welcome your participation - please reach out!
Passing the Torch
Finally, I also wish to share my appreciation for members of the Graland Alumni Board. These alumni leadersβ active engagement and dedication help create many events, activities and opportunities for connection throughout the school year - thank you.. It has been my greatest pleasure to serve as the GAB President over the past two years and I am excited to pass the torch to Jamie Miller β97 Altman. Jaime will be a wonderful leader for the GAB community and I look forward to witnessing her leadership.

Graland Country Day School - Whatβs in a Name?
Jim Arneill β66, School Archives Committee
When the current school site was selected in 1928, can you picture what this area looked like? Imagine a wide-open, spacious prairie with only two buildings - the Cranmer Mansion at 200 Cherry Street and an old brick house built by John Leet. There was βnothing but sagebrush and prairie dogs to the east, farms, and dairies to the south, and the city camp to the west (now the Cherry Creek Shopping Center).β
The beginnings of Graland took place at various rented buildings near the downtown area, and the school was incorporated a few years later. The school leaders sought a desirable location for the new school. Ruth Porter Waring was a principal founder, and her husband, Dr. James J. Waring, was a pulmonary physician. He advocated for a site that would be healthy for the children βHigh on a hill, away from the smoke and air pollution in the lower-lying areas of the city.β
The idea of a βcountry day schoolβ was very popular at the time and included principles of the new progressive movement in education. By good fortune, the Warings had developed a friendship with Mrs. Verner Reed, a philanthropist who owned tracts of land in the Hilltop and Country Club neighborhoods. When approached about the land, Mrs. Reed insisted on donating the land, and after consulting her lawyer, she deeded the majority of the school land, thirty lots, for $10.00 in the spring of 1928. Two other small land purchases in 1931 and 1939 completed the entire twoblock area.
Alumni Archives Committee Seeks Graland Memorabilia
If you have any Graland memorabilia you would like to donate or loan to our school Archives for display, please contact Anna Natassja Scheitler β13 at (303) 398-3623 or ascheitler@graland.org.
In the early years of the school, the school
was truly in a country setting. Colorado Boulevard was a dirt road, and there were no streets, sidewalks, or street lights.
Highly acclaimed architect and parent Jacque Benois Benedict was hired to design the new building, an elegant structure with special, wide windows to help capture the βopen space, sunshine, and fresh air.β
According to Cope McWhinney β36 Craven, the oldest living graduate of the school, the early students were driven to the new school by moms, dads, and carpools. Some families lived in the Country Club and Cheesman Park neighborhoods, others came from south Denver, Park Hill, and some even lived in the foothills. There were carpools, and when a car arrived, one of the teachers would make an announcement.
A special structure, probably constructed by gym and shop teacher Chester Preisser, was built to house a collection of typical farm animals - chickens, ducks, a pig, a horse, and a pair of donkeys, which also pulled a Sicilian cart full of children.
How fun it is to look back in time and imagine those earliest days when Graland was truly a country day school!

Lauren Zurcher β13
In November 2021, Graland had the pleasure of welcoming back alumna Lauren Zurcher β13 for a kindergarten storytime in the library. Lauren is an author, illustrator, and cartoonist with two published childrenβs books, βThey Call Me Luckyβ and βGood Boy, Nicco.β After listening to the story βThey Call Me Lucky,β the students completed a fun activity sheet about Lucky, the bunny in Laurenβs book.
Sara Francis β64
In early March, as Grade 6 prepared for the Southwest trip, alumna Sara Frances β64 visited with sixth graders to share about her time at Graland and her photography of the Southwest area. Students also gained insight into how to make their experience even more memorable.
Capstone speakers
In December, several alumni returned to Graland to share their life experiences and successes with current Grade 8 students. The distinguished speakers included President of Crusoe Energy, Cully Cavness β02, of Sustainability and Beverage Packaging (North and Central America) at Ball Corporation, Sara Axelrod β04, and Graland Alumni Board Member, current parent, and CoFounder of ABBY&FINN, Amanda Poe β00 Little. While the speakers primarily returned to Graland to inspire students before their capstone project on the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, they also are a critical piece of tying Gralandβs past to its future.
During their time on campus, each of the speakers visited a different Grade 8 classroom to share about their various business ventures, entrepreneurial experiences, passion for making a positive impact on the world, as well as how their time at Graland shaped them into the people and leaders they are today. Following the presentations, many of the students asked thoughtful and engaging questions and were left feeling motivated at the possibilities that life after Graland has to offer.
2021-22 ALUMNI AWARDS
Ken Cooper β70
The Nancy Nye Priest Alumni Award is presented to an extraordinary Graland alumnus or alumna who lives out the admirable qualities of Nancy Nye Priest, a graduate of the Class of 1939 and Graland faculty member who retired in 1995 after 43 years of teaching. Many remember Mrs. Priest as a role model who embodied the very spirit and soul of the school. An award in her name not only allows Graland to pay tribute to Mrs. Priest but to honor alumni who carry on her legacy of service, curiosity, passion, and loyalty.
Last yearβs recipient, one of Gralandβs first Black students, Ken Cooper β70, is a Pulitzer Prize winner, an author, and has been a newspaper reporter and editor for over 40 years. His outstanding contributions to the field of journalism have not only brought change to both the local and global community but are a direct reflection of what it truly means to live out Gralandβs mission of being an engaged citizen and thoughtful leader.
The morning after being presented the Nancy Nye Priest Alumni Award, Mr. Cooper stopped by Graland Lower School and Middle School assemblies to answer student questions and to share how his experience at Graland ultimately shaped him into who he is today.
Ben Duke III β68
The Ruth Gorham Award is given to a member of the Graland alumni community whose service and dedication embody Ruth Gorhamβs lifelong commitment to the school. A longtime educator, Ruth Gorham devoted her career to Graland, teaching French and English from 1930 until 1992. She is remembered as a mentor, a diligent school historian, as well as the de facto head of alumni relations at a time when a formal position did not exist. For this reason, it is particularly fitting that Graland alumnus Ben Duke received last yearβs Ruth Gorham Award during Alumni Reunion, which was held on May 21, 2022.
Benβs journey at Graland started as a student in 1959 when Georgia Nelson was the head of school. He later returned to Graland in 1993, serving as the director of development and leading annual and capital campaigns, managing publications, promoting faculty and staff engagement adn establishing the schoolβs first Alumni Association. Ben also established one of Gralandβs most revered honors and traditions - the Master Teacher program.

CONTINUED ο΄In Grade 3 drama class, students have the opportunity to collaborate with their peers and embrace agency in their learning by producing their own productions. During this year-long project, third graders write scripts, cast actors, assign audio/light crews, maintain budgets, and design costumes, props, and sets from start to finish.

ο΄Second grade scientists, in partnership with the Butterfly Pavilion, learn about pollinators and their importance and use this information to create a pollinator garden on campus as part of their service learning project.
Students in all grades benefit from enriched lessons taught during off-campus day trips. Teachers carefully design these programs to expand their classroom walls and to take advantage of programming available near Graland, such as this Grade 7 trip to the Denver Art Museum.

GRALAND PARENT ASSOCIATION
2021-22
Graland Parent
Association Council
President: Michele Steed
I am so grateful to be part of the Graland community where it is evident that so many put thought into the happiness they are able to give. Through the GPA, hundreds of Graland community members were able to donate their time, talents and treasures in order for us to work continuously towards our goal of building community.
As parents and caregivers were welcomed back on campus, the GPA was busy organizing events and volunteers. On any given day you could find volunteers on campus, reshelving library books, handing out desserts, sorting through the lost and found, collecting donated items, hanging art, hosting faculty & staff breakfasts, attending GPA meetings and opening car doors with a smile!
Larger GPA events were rethought in order to take precautions for COVID, but those changes didnβt deter us. Record breaking attendance numbers on Donut Day, Family Movie Night, Graland Gallop, and Carnival showed that our community was eager to reconnect. The Parent Education Networkβs events were either virtual or hybrid to make sure these events were open to all of our community, even grandparents and alumni!
This year, GPA funds were allocated to each ECLC and lower class, and to each middle school grade to organize events on a smaller scale. Room parents and MS grade reps planned morning coffees, food on Back To School nights and end of year parties. We were also able to lower the costs and increase participation for the Graland Gallop and the Carnival. The GPA council also got down to business by creating a shared Google drive to share information among volunteers from year to year, improve our financial reporting, and updated the GPA by-laws to reflect current practices.
In addition to our programming throughout the year, the GPA was able to donate $70,000 of unrestricted funds to the school. These things couldnβt have been done without the monies raised by our dedicated volunteers who ran the Graland Gallop, Book Fair, Community Rewards, Graland Store and the Eagle Invitational.
It was an honor and a joy to serve as the GPA president this year!
With Gratitude,
Michele Steed
