Each time, the students have surpassed all our expectations. Not only have they interpreted our briefs with exceptional emotional intelligence and professionalism, they have also produced exquisite works of art. Our staff and patients at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust couldn’t be happier, and we look forward to a long and healthy partnership with Falmouth University as we continue to improve our hospital estate and start to build our new Women and Children’s Hospital.”

Welcome to the 2025 edition of ‘The Edge’. The BA(Hons) Illustration Course has been publishing the work of its talented students for over 25 years now, ranging from ‘Illustrated Quotes & Sayings’ to our cabinet of curiosities called ‘Wunderkammer’.
The theme of ‘The Edge’ seems particularly poignant in 2025. As the world around us changes on a seemingly daily basis it is increasingly important that illustrators harness their creativity to respond to this evolving world. Illustrators perform an important role within society, illuminating the written word through a universal visual language. Illustrators shed light on ideas and concepts. They promote, inform, challenge and entertain. Above all illustrators communicate in a uniquely human way.
The emergence of AI as a creative force within the Visual Arts and the world of Illustration might feel like it represents a metaphorical ‘edge’, a watershed. BA Illustration at Falmouth University has always dedicated itself to ensuring that our graduates are ready for the challenges facing them as they enter the real world of the Visual Communication industry. For us the ‘Edge’ represents an expansive and exciting field of creative opportunity stretching out in front of talented new illustrators who want to make a positive difference to the world in which we live.
This edition celebrates work from 3rd year students that explore a wide range of visual styles and illustrative applications, from children’s picture book, editorial illustration, concept art, narrative illustration, packaging and much more. We hope you enjoy this edition of ‘The Edge’.

Estimated from the year 2025, each of these ornamental clay limbs is uniquely adorned with intricate illustrations and carefully encased in silk. Belonging to the Yim family, the child’s hand and leg is a documentation of the past, working in conjunction to the adult’s version depicting future aspirations. Despite the disconnected limbs, this display evokes a sense of unity. Viewers are invited to reflect upon their journey, discovering that by navigating life as a double-edged sword, is where we become whole.

JOSHUA DAVEY
With a deep natural harbour, on the edge of Cornwall, and an entire world to correspond with – Falmouth’s Packet Station was born. Saturated with eclectic mail from international allies, it encapsulates the richness of British history.

GRACE GILROY
As we step into the theatre and take our seats, we are transported to a different world. While the audience is on the ‘edge of their seats’, the set and actors work together to tell a story. We, as the viewer, can escape the real world for a couple of hours.

You could stay in your cosy cottage to avoid the unpredictability of life, but you can’t cut away the thorns without killing the roses. You must find a way to venture outside, you may get some scrapes and bruises, but you may also find something beautiful. Life is a double edged sword, but we have bandages.
JACK MILLS
Forced into a dangerous mission, a reluctant saboteur navigates a tense situation, constantly on edge as they evade watchful eyes. With every step closer to their target, the line between success and failure blurs— pushing them closer to the edge of their nerves, loyalty, and morality.

Waiting rooms. Each person has their own stories, own lives, but in the waiting room our differences merge into one universal purpose…to wait. You can’t do much to change this fate, so you’re forced to watch as fellow waiters pass the time. Why are they here? When is it their turn? When can I get out of here?

“We have worked with the students every year for the past four years now and this year was by far the highest standard of submissions we have had so far.
Every single one of the students provided a fantastic illustration that was well thought out and considered every aspect of the brief perfectly. I am certain that each of them will have a long and successful career in illustration”
