Welcome! On behalf of the Mountain Region Business Economic Summit (MRBES) sponsors, community partners and steering committee, I am honored to present to you the 2017 MRBES Success Summit. We have worked diligently over the last year to add new features, including a Minority Business Town Hall and Hiring Fair, more diverse & impactful sessions and some of the most powerful presenters ever! Rod Smith is an American Football Legend. He played 14 years in the NFL and retired with all the records for a non-drafted player. Just like his football career, Mr. Smith had to fight, claw, and scratch his way from the projects in Texarkana, Arkansas to the become a 2X Super Bowl Champion and soon to be in the Hall Of Fame. He is a highly sought after spokesman for several fortune 500 companies like the Denver Broncos, Fed Ex, Visa, Cadillac, Nike, and Intuit to name a few. He earned 3 college degrees in business. Growing up poor was a very humbling experience for Mr. Smith. As he climbed out of the ghetto to get full scholarships to college, he documented the process along the way. Transitioning out of college to the NFL was no easy feat. But the same dreaming philosophies he used before would help propel him once again. He studied and learns to
master these 8 Simple, yet Powerful Philosophies that made him a multiple 7-figure earner. Along the path to success were some trials, some pain, and plenty of disappointments. All the while he crafted a playbook for a lifetime of success. Since his retirement he became an entrepreneur, a real estate developer and business coach. He used his success principles to build a multiple 7-figure real estate portfolio, over $50 Million Dollars in coffee revenue and has coached multiple families to 7 figure incomes. Understanding how difficult it was to navigate through some of the troubled times, he decided to publish his playbook. Mr. Smith is known throughout the country as one of the hardest workers ever in his field. He will show you how the right playbook can have your success come from smart work, not hard work.

Honorable Elbra Wedgeworth
The Honorable Elbra M. Wedgeworth is a proud East Denver native and her professional experience in the private/public sector spans over 28 years. Wedgeworth is the only person in recent memory who has served in all three branches of Denver City Government, City Council, Auditor’s Office and Mayor’s Office. In 1999, she was elected as the District 8 City Councilwoman and In July 2003, her City Council colleagues unanimously elected her the Council President for 2003-2005. In April 2007 to present Elbra Wedgeworth serves as the Chief Government and Community Relations Officer at Denver Health and Hospital Authority. She is responsible for all governmental legislative matters on the local, state
and federal level and is the hospital’s liaison for Community Engagement initiatives. The National Association of Health Services Executives presented her with the Distinguished Healthcare Leader Award at the 44th Annual Legislative Conference of the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington, DC Elbra served as the President/Chair of the Board for the Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee for the historic Democratic National Convention. The last political convention hosted in the Rocky Mountain West was in Denver in 1908. Her leadership was crucial and key to Denver being chosen to host the 2008 Democratic National Convention. It was the largest convention in the history of the City of Denver and the State of Colorado. Elbra will
also be remembered as the first African-American woman to be President/ Chair of a Host Committee in the history of either political party. In 2013, 5280 Magazine named Wedgeworth as a Woman of Colorado who has played a historically significant role because of chiefly being responsible for bringing the 2008 Democratic National Convention to Denver. Being a vibrant and enthusiastic leader she is the recipient of many honors and awards for her public service. In April 2012, Elbra was named by the Denver Post as One of Colorado’s Most Influential Women and was named one of Denver’s 25 Most Powerful Women by the Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce also receiving their ATHENA Award which honors Colorado women who best exemplify exceptional professional achievement, devotion to community service, and assisting other women in the attainment of professional excellence and leadership skills. In 2014, Elbra was inducted into the Blacks in Colorado Hall of Fame by the Denver Public Library. The Denver Business Journal awarded her with their Legacy Award which recognized Elbra’s significant contributions to local business and community engagement throughout her career. In September 2008, she was elected unanimously as the President of the
Denver Union Station Project Authority Board of Directors and is serving her 9th term as the Board President for the $500 million dollar Denver Union Station Project which opened May 2014 on time and under budget. Served as the past Chairwoman for the Downtown Denver Partnership Inc. (2013-2014) Wedgeworth was the first person of color male or female, to serve as Chairperson in their 60 year history. In 2015, she was named the Downtown Denver Partnership Honorary Partner. Wedgeworth serves on the Board of Trustees for the University of Redlands in Redlands, California, her college alma mater and was recently appointed to the Board of Trustees for FirstBank. Founded in 1963 FirstBank has over $17.0 billion in assets and has over 121 locations in Colorado, Arizona and California. Elbra is the first woman of color to be appointed to their Board of Trustees.

Tim King
Urban Prep Academies Founder & CEO
Tim King was born in Chicago and attended St. Ignatius College Prep, and completed his bachelors and law degrees at Georgetown University. While at the Georgetown University Law Center, King became involved working as a teacher at a nearby Catholic high school, and eventually he determined to pursue teaching as a full-time career. King is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. In 2010, he was named one of People Magazine’s Heroes of the Year. He holds a doctoral degree honoris causa from the Adler School of Professional Psychology. After completing his law degree, King was named President of Hales Franciscan High School in Chicago, an all-male, predominately African-American school on the city’s South Side. While at Hales, King appeared on The Oprah Winfrey
Show in an interview in which Oprah characterized him as an “Angel”.During King’s five-year tenure as President of Hales, 100 percent of the school’s graduates were admitted to college. Two years after departing Hales, King founded a network of all-male public high schools, Urban Prep Academies, in order to address Chicago’s woefully low rate of college graduation for black males. Under King’s leadership, Urban Prep Academies received charters from the Chicago Board of Education to open three high schools in neighborhoods throughout the city. For his work with Urban Prep Academies, King is recognized as a national leader on education reform. Urban Prep Academies is a network of all-male charter public high schools in Chicago. King and Urban Prep have received nation-
al attention for the fact that since the school’s first graduating class in 2010, 100% of its graduates have been accepted into a four-year college or university. The Urban Prep motto is We Believe. Their motto is a constant reminder that Urban Prep students will not fall into the trap of negative stereotypes and low expectations. Instead, Urban Prep students believe in their potential and believe in their ability to exceed that potential.

Lincoln Hills Cares was founded by Robert F. Smith and Matthew Burkett, two entrepreneurs with the ability to vision a future of what was invisible to others. Based in Colorado, Lincoln Hills Cares is a charitable organization that strives to make outdoor experiences available to our community. Along with a history of being one of Colorado’s most cherished mountain areas, Lincoln Hills has maintained its accessibility and roots in the community by facilitating year round programs for youth and young adults. Through extensive restoration efforts, Lincoln Hills has been restored from its tumultuous recent history as a mining property. Lincoln Hills Cares strives to provide unique and innovative outdoor experiences through a variety of programs and activities including our Youth Outdoor Education Programs, Nizhoni Summer Equestrian Program and TeamWorks Service Learning Program for youth and young adults. Lincoln Hills Cares enables the creation of life-changing moments by creating Colorado experiences for the surrounding community, nonprofit partner groups and the underserved population of urban youth in the Denver metro area. As Lincoln Hills Cares continues to grow, its mission will remain steadfast. Sharing unforgettable Colorado experiences for the past, present and future Lincoln Hills generations.
