HARLEM of the WEST
Five Points is an emerging multi-cultural entertainment and business district rooted in African-American history Five Points is considered the “Harlem of the West” due to its long jazz history. It was the first predominantly African American neighborhood in Denver, and in the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s, was home to over fifty bars and clubs where some of the greatest jazz musicians performed, such as Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and many others. Two prominent places served as the hub. The Rossonian Hotel, constructed in 1912 as the Baxter Hotel, sat

at the heart of Denver’s Five Points community. With the name change in 1929 and the establishment of the Rossonian Lounge, the hotel became one of the most important jazz clubs between St. Louis and Los Angeles. In the 1930’s, Benny Hooper opened the Casino Dance Hall, eventually known as the Casino Cabaret. The Casino evolved into a two-story hall with 1000 balcony seats, a 40-footlong bar, and a huge hardwood dance floor. During the good years,

the Casino swung to the live music of Brook Benton, James Brown, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, George Morrison, Muddy Waters, and other musical legends. A CULTURAL DESTINATION Today, Five Points is an emerging multi-cultural entertainment and business district rooted in AfricanAmerican history and poised to become a destination for arts, culture and entertainment. Five Points’ African-American heritage is celebrated by the Black American West Museum and Heritage Center and the well as the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library. Several AfricanAmerican churches and businesses are still landmarks in the community. Each year, Denver’s Juneteenth and Five Points Jazz Festival draw over 50,000 people in attendance to celebrate its history and music.

Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble is a cultural ambassador, infusing vitality, innovation and education into every community they touch— around the corner and around the globe. While the area’s demographics are changing, the metro area’s African-American community still considers Five Points to be its symbolic historic center and cultural destination.

Denver’s Cinco de Mayo”Celebrate Culture”Festival will take place May 4–5 in Civic Center Park. It attracts some 400,000 attendees annually and boasts two large stages with live entertainment going from morning until night, featuring Mariachi, Cumba, Salsa, Norteno and many other genres of Latino music and dance.

Denver Chalk Art Festival | June
WHERE: 1430 Larimer Square More than 200 professional, amateur and student artists will delight and amaze Denverites with their incredible talents in what has become one of the city’s most treasured events. Over the course of two days, the artists will take to the street armed with vivid pastel chalks and spend hours on their hands and knees recreating major masterpieces or sharing original works of art.

Juneteenth Music Festival | June 15-16
WHERE: 27th & Welton St. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Juneteenth today celebrates African American freedom and achievement, while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures.
Denver PrideFest | June 15-16
WHERE: Civic Center Park, Broadway and Colfax Ave. One of the ten biggest Pride Fests in the U.S., this free weekend event in Civic Center Park features a parade, live music, food, and dance, all celebrating the local gay and lesbian community.

WHERE: Sakura Matsuri in LoDo on Lawrence Street between 19th and 20th Streets. A celebration of Japanese-American culture, food, music and dance, Downtown Denver’s Cherry Blossom Festival offers a taste of the Far East in the Mile High City.
Cherry Creek Arts Festival | July 5-7
WHERE: Cherry Creek North from 2nd to 3rd Aves., on the seven streets between Columbine and Steele Sts. Over Forth of July Weekend, 350,000 visitors enjoy the visual, culinary and performing arts and interactive activities for the hole family. Meet and talk with international visual artists, sample fine cuisine, and enjoy live musical performances and artist demonstrations.

The Winter Park Jazz Festival is one of Colorado’s most notable and highly anticipated Summer events. Some of the biggest names in music grace the stage in Hideaway Park.
Colorado Dragon Boat Festival | July
WHERE: Sloan’s Lake Park, 1700 S. Sheridan Blvd. Set sail for summer fun at Sloan’s Lake Park, where vibrantly decorated dragon boats race in an exciting pan-Asian sport. This weekend-long event also features music, cultural exhibits, and delicious Asian cuisine.
Golden Fine Arts Festival | August
WHERE: Historic Downtown Golden The 27th Annual Golden Fine Arts Festival, presented by the Golden Chamber of Commerce, is one of the largest and most prestigious juried art shows in the country. The 2-day Festival features over 130 artists from 20 states, including many from Colorado. Artists will be juried in various media categories such as painting, sculpture, jewelry, and photography. The GFAF has free admission and will include food vendors, live music, locally brewed beer, and free art activities for children. We invite you to join us for this wonderful art show located adjacent to beautiful Clear Creek.
A Taste of Colorado | Aug. 31 - Sept. 2
WHERE: Civic Center Park, Broadway and Colfax Ave. A Taste Of Colorado is the end-of-summer celebration of community pride and spirit in the Denver region. Held every year over Labor Day Weekend in Civic Center Park, A Taste of Colorado puts the spotlight on the diversity of Colorado cuisine. Black American West Museum 3091 California St, Denver, CO 80205 (720)242-7428 Preserves the history and culture of those African American men and women who helped settle and develop the American West. Located in the former home of Dr. Justina Ford, the first Black woman doctor in Denver. Exhibits on African American cowboys including Bill Pickett. Call for hours and admission info.
Historic Five Points
The five points in the district name are the vertices formed where four streets meet: 26th Avenue, 27th Street, Washington Street, and Welton Street. Cultures blend in historic Five Points, one of Denver’s oldest and most diverse neighborhoods. The district was known as the “Harlem of the West” because it was a frequent stop for jazz greats including Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis, who played clubs like the Rossonian and the Rainbow Room. The neighborhood was also mentioned repeatedly in Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. Today, historic Five Points’ creativity and vibrancy live on in a fascinating fusion of old and new. Visitors can stop in at innovative coffeehouses and craft breweries, visit museums telling stories from the past or eat at beloved soul food and barbecue institutions.
Barney Ford House Museum 111 East Washington Ave., Breckenridge
Born the son of a Virginia slave in 1882, Ford escaped bondage via the Underground Railroad, and made his way to the mountain town of Breckenridge, where he achieved success as a prominent businessman, civic leader, black rights advocate and mine owner. In the late 1800s, Ford and his wife were the wealthiest couple in Breckenridge. Ford’s impressive legacy is memorialized at the Barney Ford House Museum.
Denver Art Museum 100 W 14th Ave Pkwy, Denver, CO 80204 With galleries showcasing more than 70,000 works by famed artists such as Vincent Van Gogh and Winslow Homer, the Denver Art Museum houses one of the most impressive collections of art between Chicago and the West Coast. Spread across two buildings, the museum’s holdings range from pre-Columbian artifacts to contemporary displays with such mediums as painting and sculpture represented.
Red Rocks Amphitheatre & Park 18300 W. Alameda Pkwy., Morrison Carved from towering red rock monuments, Red Rocks Amphitheatre & Park is one of the world’s most renowned concert venues. When there’s no concert, visit the free Visitor Center has a museum Performers’ Hall of Fame. With its excellent views of the Rocky Mountains, miles of hiking trails and cinnamon-hued sandstone cliffs, Red Rocks Park is a big draw for outdoors enthusiasts. 2019 Little Black Book

Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library
2401 Welton St., Denver The Blair-Caldwell Library offers traditional library resources, but also hosts illuminating exhibits on the history, literature, art, music, religion and politics of African-Americans in Colorado and throughout the Rocky Mountain West. The historic Five Points neighborhood is highlighted, as are Denver’s earliest African-American arrivals.

2001 Colorado Blvd, Denver 80205 The Denver Museum of Nature & Science inspires learning for all ages. This impressive facility houses artifacts pertaining to a variety of scientific areas, including anthropology, zoology, geology, health sciences, paleontology and space science.
Denver Zoo
2300 Steele St, Denver, CO 80205 Sprawling across 80 acres of City Park, the Denver Zoo is home to more than 4,000 animals, including tigers, black rhinos, kangaroos and orangutans.
16th Street Mall
16th St, Denver 80265 This mile-long pedestrian thoroughfare stretches across the southern end of the LoDo district and bypasses Larimer Square, is lined with a variety of stores, restaurants and entertainment venues, making it a popular place to visit.
U.S. Mint Tour
320 W. Colfax Ave. Learn how to make money! The U.S. Mint produces 50 million coins a day, each one stamped with a little “D” for Denver. Free tours show every step in the process of turning a dull, blank, metal slug into shiny pocket change.
Garden of the Gods
1805 N. 30th St., Colorado Springs Located 60 miles from Denver, the awe-inspiring Garden of the Gods features gigantic 500-foot high red sandstone rock monuments at the base of Pikes Peak.
Stiles African American Heritage Center
2607 Glenarm Pl., Denver The Center celebrates the positive contributions made by African Americans through guided tours, cultural exhibits, artifacts and memorabilia. Located in Five Points, the heart of Denver’s historic African-American community.
Denver Skate Park
19th and Little Raven Sts. The expansive Denver SkatePark - one of the most renowned skate parks in the country - is filled with bowls for all levels of skating skill. Admission is free. Helmets are required.

Colorado State Capitol Tour

This expansive facility in Denver’s Cheesman Park boasts a variety of different environments from a traditional Japanese garden to the South African Plaza. Dinosaur Ridge

Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City-Denver Branch’s Money Museum
1020 16th St. A The Money Museum offers an opportunity to learn about the Federal Reserve Bank. And, best of all, it’s free! Walk-ins are welcome and groups can make advance reservations. Photo ID required for visitors 18 and older. On your way out, don’t forget to get your bag of shredded money.
Lariat Loop Byway
Retrace the motoring adventures of the early 1920s and experience the thrill of foothills exploration at the dawn of the Age of Motorcars on this 40-mile scenic circle in the foothills west of Denver. The Lariat Loop takes motorists to several popular attractions, including Buffalo Bill’s Grave & Museum, the Colorado Railroad Museum and the Mother Cabrini Shrine.

Denver’s city parks are beautiful. Confluence Park, located within walking distance Of downtown, offers sandy shores for sunbathing, a kayak practice route, and bike paths. Up in the Highlands neighborhood, explore Sloan’s Lake Park, an urban oasis with the enormous Sloan’s Lake taking center stage.
Estes Park
At the entrance to the legendary Rocky Mountain National, the historic resort village of Estes Park offers shopping and dining - as well as the hotel that inspired Stephen King’s The Shining!
Peak To Peak Scenic & Historic Byway
Less than an hour from Denver, the 55-mile-long Peak To Peak Scenic & Historic Byway provides matchless views of the Continental Divide. From Black Hawk to Estes Park, the pleasantly winding road - the oldest scenic byway in Colorado -meanders through valleys and ridges, with shimmering aspens visible throughout the entire route.
Denver Bike Trails Denver is home to a massive network of more than 850 miles of paved, off-road trails that crisscross throughout the seven county metro area, making it a two-wheeled paradise. Paved trails connect to hundreds of additional miles of dirt trails, offering mountain bike adventures.

THE NEW HOPE FAMILY LIFE CENTER is a 17,645 sq. ft. extension of New Hope Baptist Church. This multi-purpose / multi-use facility is composed of: a full-court gymnasium, commercial kitchen, banquet center, stage, choir rehearsal room, music library, chapel, meeting rooms, executive conference boardrooms, offices, an octagon-shaped prayer and meditation room, and friendly, courteous, customer-oriented service.
EVENT CAPABILITIES THE NEW HOPE FAMILY LIFE CENTER is equipped with a state-of-the-art full commercial kitchen. This facility can provide general banquet seating for 450 people or 650 capacity seating for plays and concerts. A standing audience of 1,000 for an art or reception-type event can also be accommodated. The elegant dĂŠcor not only provides a pleasant environment for dining, seminars, plays, or musicals, but the distributed sound system also provides a diverse, well-rounded, acoustically balanced environment for both vocal and musical performances.
