letter from the They say it’s all about who you know. Some may speak of this idea like it’s an unfair advantage, but I truly believe in the saying, “your network is your net worth.” Beyond who you know, the real value is in who you do life with, who you nurture, who you serve... these people are the ones who reciprocate by lifting you up, helping you out, and connecting you to other like-minded, amazing folks. The right friends can absolutely make your life better. These pages are filled with folks who make my life way better, and it fills me with immense joy to reflect on how we met, how long it’s been (some I’ve known for over 20 years!) and how much we have all changed. What has stayed the same is that everyone I know within the pages of this magazine lives with excellence, loves big, and values creating unique experiences. As we wrap up our 19th year in print, looking forward to year TWENTY (wowzers), I am filled with gratitude for everyone who has made this magazine so special. Living life with you all is my favorite thing to do. Thank you, friends,

Vintage Reimagined story by Monica Sawyer photos by Heidi Rae Photography Every cover shoot for The One Bride Guide is a special collaboration between our favorite people who inspire us most. This fall 2026 cover was like a reunion of friends from all different parts of our lives, reminding us how small and beautiful the world really is.

Heidi Rae Huseman Byers (every part of her name matters), of Heidi Rae Photography, is one of those people who becomes a friend of your family the moment she’s introduced. She’s Heidi Rae in the photography world (I’ve trusted her with my family portraits for years). She’s Heidi Huseman if you are talking about her sweet parents, AlRae (who I met when she was helping Heidi at a wedding fair), or her brilliant, lawyer father, Van (who has been a godsend to my family). She’s Heidi Byers when you talk about her handsome hubby, Eric, and her adorable son, Fritz (my daughter babysits Fritz!). Heidi and The One go way back. Heidi Rae has been contributing to the magazine since 2017 with her signature style of vibrant photography. As a photographer, she is easygoing, fast, and has an eye for color, and she’s just fun to be around. We were excited to work with her again, since the last time we got to do a cover with Heidi was on the historic Ritz Theatre stage! With Fritz now in school, Heidi Rae is back in photographer mode full-time, and we are reaping the benefits. When we were brainstorming, Heidi told me about a unique dress shop owned by one of her longtime friends, Lisa Jo Pollock. Serving San Antonio brides since 2005, IDoTheDressIDo was built with a simple belief: every bride deserves to find her dream wedding gown without breaking the bank. IDoTheDressIDo specializes in beautiful, budget-friendly wedding dresses that are available off the rack, so brides can find the gown they
love and take it home the very same day, no ordering, no waiting, and no months of wondering when your dress will arrive. We loved the concept and were wowed by Lisa Jo’s stunning inventory. She went through all the trends and helped us pick out three distinct dresses by Wtoo for our shoot: a vintage-inspired gown, a modern, fitted gown with a unique cat’s eye neckline, and an unexpected floral gown that we weren’t sure about, but joked that it would probably be the one that made the cover. It was! Lisa Jo knows! We thought about the scene we wanted to create and Bernadette Francis of Birchwood Beauties was our immediate first choice. Talk about longtime friendships... My husband, Ryan, and I met Bernadette and her husband, Jeff, in 2003, before either of us were married and we were thrill-seeking kiteboarders. Bernadette now owns Birchwood Beauties, an eclectic, boutique rental company based in Corpus Christi. Her specialty is curating vintage furniture, unique décor, and statement pieces for weddings, photo shoots, and special events. I loved shopping her collection of velvet settees, mid-century pieces, brass accents, and everything to make your boho-chic dreams come true. A Birchwood Beauties signature is the peacock chair, so we just had to use one. They have 12! We saw the mid-century couch and fell in love. This piece is a unique, early prototype of what became known as the Case Study couches, made in Eastern Europe. Birchwood Beauties stylist Meg Romero pulled together the perfect pieces from their collection to create our gorgeous set. Next, we needed live plants to bring the whole look to life. I had been thinking of working with Tina Dawod of Planted CCTX ever since she started her shop and moved into a house a few doors
down from me. I was thrilled to finally have an opportunity to collaborate. Planted CCTX is a nursery dedicated to indoor houseplants and patio plants, offering a range of learning workshops and engaging plant events. You can find the shop in The Village Shopping Center on Alameda. They also provide rental services for events, alongside supplying and maintaining live plants for offices, hotels, and commercial spaces. Tina’s plants were a key element that brought everything together. Our cover model was the lovely Jennifer Vyvlecka, who is a good friend of Bernadette’s. Jenn is an environmental scientist, horticulturist, and owner of a local floral farm and design studio, Roaming Gardens. We asked Jenn to model for us before realizing she has been a supplier to other designers, and some of her blooms have made it onto our covers! So fun!
Our cover shoot locations are always the biggest question mark. We look for indoor spaces for security and comfort, outdoor options for natural light, interesting textures—but not too much going on, a complementary color palette, and a spot without much traffic for our all-day shoots. Heidi often does family shoots for the Shook family and suggested the bar they own downtown, The Annex. We knew their colors would go well with our pieces and we were especially interested in their green walls, large wall of windows, and indoor/outdoor options. The Shooks and I go way back, ever since Kyra and I were on the board of The Ritz together, over a decade ago. Her daughters are all gorgeous and amazing, and they agreed to let us take over their bar on a Monday when they were closed. We got the best of both worlds with indoor and outdoor, and the space fit perfectly with our vision. Kallia and Caitlin Shook, thank you for your hospitality! The cherry on top was a personal indulgence. I adore shopping for vintage gems at A. Kenney Jewelry in the Taylor Center. Ashley finds the most amazing pieces on her travels and always has new pieces to
reveal. A. Kenney is a collaborator I look forward to working with the most, and I usually leave with a few additions to my “wish list.” Ladies, stop in to start your list before the holidays. It’s a win-win. Your man doesn’t have to wonder what you like, and you get a precious, heirloom gift, hopefully on many future occasions. It was such a pleasure to work with new friends, longtime friends, and to see how many in the group were connected. They say your network is your net worth, and the friends we’ve gathered over the years are the most valuable parts of my life. Thank you, friends, for your contribution! It was very special.

We had such a lovely time working with hair and makeup friends, Ashley Frye and Maggie Manjarris, that we asked them back for another session. Ashley Frye moved to the area just over three years ago and hit the ground running with bridal styling and she definitely brings a little Southern charm to the area. One of the first questions she gets is, “Where is that accent from?” Ashley’s roots are in NE Georgia and the Appalachian Mountains, which became a big wedding destination. She worked for a high-end salon there, and was known for being able to do large bridal parties by herself, quickly, and get rave reviews. She would sometimes complete three to four weddings in a day! “Bridal parties bring the fun, and I love being in the middle of the laughter,” Ashley says. Maggie partnered with Ashley to handle hair and makeup for the larger bridal parties and they make a great team.
New to our world is Leslie Newberry, owner of a wood flower boutique in Kenedy, Texas called Always N Bloom. I met Leslie at an open house for a new venue, Wells Bridle Trail, and loved her designs. She restored her family’s flower barn into an inspiring studio where she personally designs every arrangement using handcrafted sola wood flowers and her own techniques using paint and dyes. We love the timeless quality and unique textures in the gorgeous bouquet she designed for the shoot. Now I know where to go for all my Christmas gift shopping. Her arrangements are beautiful and last forever!

How we met:
theonebrideguide.com • October 2026 – January 2027 {10}
In May 2024, Brendon (the bride’s brother), Hunter, and a couple of other friends were on a ranch in Beeville, Texas. With Brendon’s wedding quickly approaching (in 6 months), Hunter realized he needed a date to their wedding. While driving around on the ranch, Brendon mentioned to Hunter, “Why don’t you just ask my sister?” “Wait… you have a sister?” asked Hunter. With excitement and a sincere heart, Hunter sent Halie a message on Instagram. He started with a simple question: “Heard you totaled your car. Figured you might need a ride and a date to your brother’s wedding in October???”
The proposal:
Hunter proposed in College Station, Texas following his Aggie Ring Ceremony during pictures. There was a surprise Aggie Ring Dunk party for Hunter, with a theme, “two rings are better than one.”
Favorite detail:
Bride: After reflecting on our wedding weekend, several moments made our wedding unique through my eyes. The personal touch of writing our own private vows, my custom voiceover that played over the chapel before I walked down the aisle, and incorporating a church that my grandfather hand-made when we were younger (almost the exact replica of the chapel our ceremony was held in). Groom: My favorite part was how everybody had a fantastic time.
Favorite moment:
Bride: My favorite moment was talking to all of our guests during cocktail hour and while they waited for their food. Each conversation was important to Hunter and me as it gave us the opportunity to thank guests for celebrating with us. Groom: Saying “I DO!”
Biggest challenge:
Bride: Reading my private vows without crying. I wasn’t successful. It was such a raw and emotional moment. It was perfect. Groom: Getting there on time.
Funniest moment:
Bride: We were both picked up by our groomsmen and lifted into the air late into the night during our reception. The groomsmen dropped Hunter! Groom: Looking back on some of the photos and videos taken of me.
If you could do one thing over:
Bride: I would relive the whole day, not to change anything, but to relive every pure, raw, and beautiful moment. Groom: The whole day - it was perfect.
Advice for couples:
Bride: Don’t leave your spouse’s side, trust your vendors, and be present in the moment. Groom: Treasure every moment.
Why you got married:
Bride: I found the person who makes my world feel quiet and safe during the most chaotic moments. Groom: Partnership, loving, eternity.
How to make your spouse happy: Bride: Communicate softly and openly, show love with appreciation and grace, and never stop pursuing each other. Groom: Food or money.
What you look forward to most:
Bride: Continuing to create our own family traditions and growing together through every season of life. Groom: Having a family and getting to share everything with my best friend.
More advice for couples:
Bride: Listen to each other — overcommunicate, but do so softly and privately. You are each other’s biggest supporter. Groom: Live your life, love and trust each other. Y’all are a team forever.

How we met:
We met through a mutual friend in a group at The Goldfish bar downtown. We hit it off immediately and ditched the group to go by ourselves around downtown to different bars. We exchanged numbers, and I wrote her last name down wrong in my phone (it’s still spelled that way in my phone).
The proposal:
theonebrideguide.com • October 2026 – January 2027 {14}
Groom: I wanted to make sure she had exactly the ring design she wanted. We would look at rings “for fun,” but I gaslit her into thinking I didn’t have the money for a ring, all the while custom designing her ring through Alexis Russell with exactly what she wanted. I wanted to propose in front of our friends and families, but wanted to still make it a surprise. The opportunity came when she wanted a party for her birthday. Everybody was in on it except her. When she walked in expecting birthday decorations, she was surprised to see a “Marry Me” sign and turned around to me on one knee. She said yes!
Favorite detail:
Bride: After some unexpected rain, a beautiful rainbow appeared during our ceremony! Groom: Our wedding was unique because of the rain and the chaos right before our ceremony! We had a HUGE rain downpour right as our outdoor ceremony was supposed to take place. I wasn’t supposed to see her until she walked down the aisle, but in all the confusion, the guests and I saw her. We caught a
momentary break in the rain, and our venue staff went into overdrive to clear all the rain water from the seats so we could do the ceremony outside. As we were about to read our vows, our maid of honor whispered something to our officiant, who then announced it on the microphone to everybody - we had a beautiful rainbow behind us. I wouldn’t trade that series of events for anything!
Favorite moment:
Bride: Our first look. We initially did not plan on having a first look, but the rain forced us to adjust our timeline. Joseph’s reaction to seeing me in my wedding dress for the first time is something I will never forget. Groom: My favorite moment was actually getting to write my vows in the kitchen a few hours before the wedding, with a few drinks in my system. I perform best under pressure, so I knew this was something I wanted to do for optimal results. I poured my heart into it and it flowed naturally.
Biggest challenge:
Bride: The rain forcing us to adjust our timeline. When guests arrived, instead of having our ceremony, we went straight into cocktail hour. Luckily, it all worked out in the end! Groom: Ironing out our guest list. It’s very difficult to find what lines to draw when inviting people to a wedding. “If we invite person X, we have to invite person Y,” etc. It can quickly get complex and the guest list can become much larger than anticipated.
Funniest moment:
If you could do one thing over:
Bride: I would add more personal details. I decided not to include signature drinks to make it easier on our bartenders, and I decided against customized decorations using our cats and dogs. Groom: I probably would have said we should start the planning sooner, lol.
Advice for couples:
How to make your spouse happy: Bride: To make Joseph happy, I make him dinner and an Old Fashioned. Groom: Listen when she is upset about something and try not to suggest solutions immediately. This is something I am still learning. I am a very logically-minded person. When I hear a problem, the first thing I do is try to brainstorm solutions. Women don’t necessarily want that right away. They just want to be heard and acknowledged.
Bride: Do not stress yourself worrying about how things will get done. It will all be perfect in the end. Enjoying your wedding is the most important thing! Groom: Your wedding day is about YOU TWO. Do not do it for anybody else. Don’t let anybody tell you a certain thing you want in your wedding is “weird” or “unorthodox.” It is your day!
What you look forward to most:
Why you got married:
More advice for couples:
Bride: I got married as a symbol of my commitment to Joseph and the life we are making together. Marriage
Bride: Growing old together with my special person for the rest of my life. Groom: Coming home at the end of every workday and having my person waiting for me. My house is a home, thanks to her. All the stress and hardships of the world are easier to bear in my home with her by my side. Bride: Enjoy the little things with each other! Groom: Love one another unconditionally!

Bride: Joseph’s 6-year-old nephew, Jacks, dancing like his life depended on it the whole night. He absolutely destroyed his rented tuxedo. Groom: After the wedding, during our bar crawl, one of my groomsmen forgot his wallet at the wedding venue. The bar had a person checking IDs at the door. Once he realized, before any of us could say otherwise, he ran away and jumped the fence in the back of the bar in order to get in. He was so excited that this strategy worked, that he walked back out the front door to tell us about his success as we were in line waiting to get in. We pointed out the flaw in his plan: he just left the venue he snuck into. So, he went back around to the back of the bar and jumped the fence AGAIN.
means loving and supporting each other through every stage of growth you both experience. Groom: Marriage to me is like swapping a video game RPG from single-player to co-op. It becomes more challenging, because now the amount of tasks you need to do and enemies you have to face increases to scale with the new player. You can no longer pause the game (your wife needs the trash taken out NOW), and resources need to be shared so that your team can progress. However, like life, the game is way more fun with two people instead of one. It’s dangerous to go alone!

How we met:
I saw Aubrey’s Snapchat profile and noticed her beautiful blonde hair and bright smile. I sent her a message telling her she was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen and asked if I could take her out for dinner, to which Aubrey replied, “I’m free on Sunday.” I picked her up with her favorite flowers (lilies), and we went to Umiya for sushi. We then headed to the beach where I built a bonfire and we danced on the sand. From that first date, things moved quickly. About a month in, I was already trying to figure out how I would pull off getting a ring. A ring turned into a baby six months later, LOL. Our son Stetson was born in February and all we knew was that a wedding was soon to follow. With the help of our family and dear friends, we pulled off the cutest little DIY ceremony and reception, exceeding all of our dreams and expectations. theonebrideguide.com • October 2026 – January 2027 {18}
The proposal:
If you could do one thing over: Bride: I wish we hadn’t left each other’s sides during the reception. Groom: Watch her walk down the aisle again.
Advice for couples:
Bride: Slow down and take it all in. Savor it. Groom: Don’t let go of each other’s hands during the reception.
Why you got married:
Bride: To establish a strong foundation for our future. Groom: To me, marriage is a lifelong commitment built on love, trust and partnership.
How to make your spouse happy:
Bride: His humor and constant ability to make me laugh no matter the situation. Groom: I love when she greets me every day when I get home from work.
Aubrey was changing the baby’s diaper when Hudson tapped her on the shoulder to get her to turn around. When she did, he was on one knee with the ring. Aubrey cried and said an enthusiastic, “YES!”
What you look forward to most:
Favorite detail:
Bride: Don’t wait! If you know, you know. Groom: Have babies ASAP. Don’t wait till you’re too old.
Bride: That it was at a friend’s private ranch. It made it feel special and intimate. Groom: The surprise joint parent dance (mother/son, father/daughter).
Favorite moment:
Bride: Exchanging our private vows at the beach on the morning of our wedding. Groom: Watching her walk down the aisle.
Biggest challenge:
Bride: Planning it in 3 weeks, LOL. Groom: Reading my vows to her that morning. It was very emotional.
Funniest moment:
Bride: I set off the smoke alarm in the dressing room spraying too much hairspray. Groom: When we were washing each other’s feet during the ceremony and Aubrey couldn’t pull my boots off.
Bride: Getting to do life with my best friend. Groom: Building a life together, day by day.

How we met:
To keep it simple… high school sweethearts! If you want the long story, I (Kennedy) have been obsessed with him since the day I saw him jumping on the trampoline with my older sister when I was in 5th grade (& he was in 8th). I didn’t just think he was cute, I started practicing my signature with his last name. Everyone in Calallen knew I was obsessed, including Matt, which I’m pretty sure is the reason why he decided to Snapchat me my freshman year of high school (his senior year) as a joke, and now we are here! My dream come true!

theonebrideguide.com • October 2026 – January 2027 {22}
We were at the lake for our annual 4th of July party. I was finishing up getting ready in the bathroom, when my sister, Preslie, walked in and handed me a card. Confused, I opened the card, and as soon as I realized what was happening, I was in shock. It was a letter from Matt. As I was reading the letter, Preslie brought me a gorgeous white dress to change into and walked me down to the water where Matt was waiting for me at the most beautiful wooden arch covered in flowers. Our favorite song was playing from the speakers and we were surrounded by our friends and family. I said yes before he even asked the question, and a surprise engagement party broke out
after. This day will always be a close second to our wedding day.
Favorite detail:
Bride: My best friend Jaylyn sang “Goodness of God” at our ceremony while we got to stand back in worship and reflect on the blessings that brought us to that moment. Groom: Aside from the 96-inch pizza as a midnight snack, I would say the migrating butterflies that started flowing through the ceremony when Ken walked down the aisle.
Favorite moment:
Bride: During our private last dance, it was so sweet to be alone together with sparklers shooting, talking about how we had the best night of our lives. Groom: Just getting to share the special moment with all of our loved ones. It was a one-of-a-kind experience.
Biggest challenge:
Bride: Trying to say hi to everyone while also enjoying the dance floor. The night went by way too fast! Groom: Trying to slow time down. I wanted the night to last forever, with all of our favorite people!
Funniest moment:
Bride: Our grand entrance changed last-minute, so we had to improv a dance and somehow Matt ended up
crowd surfing with his groomsmen. Groom: Seeing a good friend ditch his shirt on the dance floor is always a classic!
If you could do one thing over:
Bride: I would want to dance to one more song on our beautiful dance floor with my husband and all of our favorite people in one place. Groom: See my wife walk down the aisle once more.
Advice for couples:
Bride: Soak up the engagement season and prepare your heart for marriage. I truly felt like this is what helped me get through the day, even when not everything went as planned. I had peace in knowing that we were ready for this new chapter, no matter what little things might go wrong the day of the wedding. I knew it would all work out how it was supposed to! Groom: Slow the moment down, and soak up each and every second. Just like all of the good moments in life, the night will fly by! Cherish the time with family, friends, and loved ones all in one place.
Why you got married:
Bride: We got married because we knew that we wanted to live in unity forever! We believe that God brought us together on purpose, and had already worked so much through our relationship before we got married. Now, I get to spend every day of the rest of my life with my best friend! Groom: Marriage is a divine covenant, a bond that should last a lifetime, and I knew that is what I wanted with Ken. Bride: Let him have control of the TV remote, play golf, and remind him how much I love and appreciate him! Groom: The little things matter. Make her coffee in the morning, never let her
What you look forward to most:
Bride: I look forward to all of the memories we will make together and hopefully with some children of our own one day! I cannot wait to see Matt be a dad!
Groom: Strengthening our bond with each other through the Lord, traveling, and just enjoying the good life.
More advice:
Bride: Put God at the throne of your relationship and seek Him together! The more you grow your relationship with Him, the better your relationship will be with your partner. Groom: Life is too short to worry, argue, and hold a grudge. Rely on the Lord, love each other, love others, spread kindness, travel, and make the most out of each and every moment.

How we met:
Biggest challenge:
The proposal:
Funniest moment:
Adriel sent me a message on Facebook that led to a growing friendship. Adriel had arranged a surprise proposal in Hawaii while we were visiting. The area was lined with roses and a red carpet that led to a giant sign that said “Marry Me.” I was completely surprised and initially thought the proposal was for someone else. I remember walking up and saying, “Oh my gosh, look! Someone is getting engaged!” I didn’t realize when he laughed that he was actually so nervous, and leading me to that area.

Bride: Worrying that everything needs to be perfect the day of the wedding. Groom: Trying to greet everyone. Bride: I slipped on the beading of my dress and took a little tumble down the dance floor. Groom: Finding out that I had to dance without a garter — I improvised and used a rose.
If you could do one thing over: Bride: Relive the night again. Groom: The whole day, from start to finish.
Advice for couples:
Bride: Don’t stress over the small stuff. Enjoy every minute of each other! Stay together the whole night, because it goes by so fast. Groom: Spend as much time as you can together. Greet people together. Eat together. Have drinks together. Do everything that you can do together.

Bride: Getting to love my best friend for the rest of forever. Knowing that we share a commitment with one another and God. Groom: To have what my parents have. To still be in love 40 or more years down the road and look back to what we made or created and say, “we did it.”

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT FACIAL TREATMENT BEFORE THE BIG DAY “Bridal glow” may be one of the hardest-working phrases in the wedding industry. Put the word bridal in front of a facial, give it a sparkly name and suddenly a treatment that was already sitting on the menu can feel more special, more urgent and somehow more expensive. So, what are you actually paying for? Is the “Bridal Diamond Champagne Glow Facial” customized to address your acne, pigmentation or texture? Or is it an existing service in prettier packaging, without considering what YOUR skin really needs? Now, if what you want is a beautiful, relaxing experience, that can absolutely be worth every penny.
Wedding planning is stressful. Literally, get under that warm blanket, enjoy a facial massage and do not answer your phone for an hour, book it and enjoy every second. Just know what you’re booking: if a treatment promises more than relaxation, you deserve to understand what it is designed to address and what it can realistically accomplish. That’s the bridal beauty conversation we need to be having in 2026. First Things First: “Glow” Is Not a Skin Concern “Bridal glow” sounds beautiful, but it tells us absolutely nothing about what your skin is receiving. Does “glow” mean your skin is dry and needs hydration? Are you trying to calm active acne? Do you have brown spots from years of our South Texas sun exposure? Are enlarged pores, acne scars or uneven texture affecting the way your makeup sits? Those are completely different concerns, yet brides are often presented with the exact same “bridal facial” for all of them. Here’s the aha moment: if every bride receives the same treatment, it isn’t truly customized, no matter how personalized the name sounds.
theonebrideguide.com • October 2026 – January 2027 {28}
That doesn’t mean a bridal facial is just clever marketing. A thoughtfully designed bridal facial can be incredibly valuable when it is customized to your skin, selected for your specific concerns and timed appropriately around your wedding events. The problem isn’t calling it “bridal.” The problem is assuming every bride’s skin needs the same thing. A hydrating facial may leave dry, dull skin looking plumper and more refreshed. A dermaplaning facial can remove surface buildup and help makeup apply more smoothly. Those can be wonderful treatments, and we love them when they match the goal.
Hydration alone, however, won’t correct significant pigmentation, persistent redness or acne scarring. Depending on the person, those concerns may require medical-grade skincare, chemical peels, microneedling, light-based treatments, laser resurfacing or a thoughtfully planned combination. The right treatment isn’t determined by what’s trending. It’s determined by what’s happening in your skin. Look Past the Champagne and Ask What’s Included Before booking a bridal treatment, try to look beyond the aromatherapy, flower petals and Instagram-worthy treatment room. Ask what the service includes and why. Will your skin be evaluated before anyone begins? Is the treatment adjusted for your skin type, sensitivity and concerns? Has anyone asked about your medications, previous treatments, active breakouts or recent sun exposure? Is the person treating you properly licensed, trained and experienced? Most importantly, can that provider explain what the treatment is expected to change? You should hear more than, “It’ll make you glow.” A qualified professional should be able to tell you whether the treatment targets dehydration, congestion, pigmentation, redness, texture or collagen production. You should know whether the result will be immediate or develop gradually, whether you’ll need a series of treatments and what your skin may look like afterward. If the explanation sounds more like a cocktail menu than a skin plan, pause before handing over your credit card. Know What One Treatment Can and Can’t Do. Some treatments are designed to create an immediate polished finish. A customized facial, dermaplaning or gentle exfoliation can remove surface buildup, improve hydration and help makeup sit more evenly. Think of these as maintenance treatments. They work beautifully when you’ve maintained a balanced skincare routine, stayed consistent with facials every four to six weeks—or ugh, ok fine. You were simply blessed with annoyingly good skin genetics. Seriously though, we love that for you and would
like to know where the rest of us can apply for your family’s genetic package.
Your camera roll may have ideas; it does not have a medical license.
Corrective treatments are for the rest of us: the ones whose skin remembers every breakout, sunburn and night we slept in our makeup. Microneedling, laser resurfacing and other collagenstimulating procedures work beneath the surface, while medical-grade skincare can gradually address acne, discoloration and skin-barrier concerns.
A qualified professional should evaluate your skin, consider how it has responded to previous treatments and plan around all of your wedding events. The order, spacing and intensity matter, especially when bridal portraits, showers, bachelorette trips and the wedding itself are approaching. Your skin does not care that the invitations have already been mailed. It will heal on its own schedule.
The catch? Real correction takes consistency. It doesn’t happen overnight, and sadly, one miracle facial cannot undo years of our skin keeping receipts. That doesn’t mean every bride needs the strongest laser available or a 12-step treatment plan that requires its own wedding-planning binder. Sometimes the most honest recommendation really is a few customized facials and a better skincare routine at home. Your skin may not need a complete renovation; it may just need you to stop confusing it with five new products every week.
Remember, price alone doesn’t determine quality. More expensive doesn’t automatically mean more effective, but choosing solely by the lowest price may mean giving up experience, quality products, proper customization or the follow-up you’ll want if your skin decides to be dramatic. A treatment is worth the investment when it’s safe, appropriate for your skin and recommended for an actual reason. When Treatments Work Better Together For certain concerns, a well-designed combination plan can give you better results than asking for one treatment to do absolutely everything. Medical-grade skincare may prepare and support the skin, while facials, peels, microneedling, lasers or light-based treatments address acne, pigmentation, texture or collagen loss in their own ways. Think of it as giving each treatment its own assignment instead of expecting one facial to complete the entire group project. But combining treatments should never mean checking off every procedure you’ve saved on Instagram.
True Customization Is More Than Choosing a Mask True customization isn’t asking whether you want the rose, champagne or 24-karat-gold add-on. It means selecting the products, technology, intensity and frequency based on what your skin is begging for. Your plan may look completely different from your best friend’s or from the Pinterest bride whose before-and-after photo has been living in your saved folder for six months. She may need hydration and gentle exfoliation. You may need acne control and pigment correction. Neither plan is better or more impressive. The value comes from receiving what your skin needs instead of borrowing someone else’s treatment plan. Questions to Ask Before You Book So, before you automatically book the first service with “bridal” in the name, remember this article and ask: • What does this treatment include? • Will someone evaluate my skin before choosing the treatment? • Is it customized for me, or does every bride receive the same service? • What specific concerns will it address? • Will I need one treatment or a series? • What should I expect before, during and after the treatment?
A trusted provider won’t act bothered or make you feel difficult for asking. If anything, they should appreciate that you want to understand what’s being done to your face. You’re allowed to ask questions before someone applies products, uses a device or performs a treatment on your skin. That isn’t being high maintenance; that’s being smart. The takeaway isn’t that you shouldn’t book a bridal facial. You absolutely should—if it fits your skin and your goals. Just make sure “bridal” means the treatment was thoughtfully customized for you, not simply added to the name. Before You Say “I Do” to a Treatment You wouldn’t choose your dress without trying it on, book a venue without seeing it or trust the seating chart to work itself out. Your skin deserves the same level of planning. A bridal facial can be absolutely worth booking when it is chosen for your skin, performed by someone you trust and scheduled with enough time for your skin to respond. The goal isn’t to book the most expensive treatment or try every procedure you’ve seen online. It’s to walk into your appointment knowing what you’re receiving, why it was recommended and how it fits into the bigger plan for your skin. Consider this my maid-of-honor speech for your face: before giving any treatment your second “I do,” investigate it with the same energy you investigated your fiancé after the first date. If we can identify his ex-girlfriend, locate his mother’s Facebook, confirm his actual height and determine whether the girl liking all his photos is really his cousin…we can absolutely find out what’s inside a bridal facial and whether it’s right for our skin. The recommendation should come from a professional evaluation, not the fanciest treatment name, the highest price or the cheapest deal you found while scrolling at midnight.
Your provider should also be comfortable saying, “I wouldn’t do that before your wedding,” when a treatment or its timing isn’t right. We have that conversation all the time. It may not be the answer you wanted to hear, but that honest “no” can be far more valuable than a treatment someone else was happy to sell you.

by Monica Sawyer, photos by Deux Bohème Ashley Kenney’s love for jewelry started with her childhood bestie, her Nana, and grew through part-time jewelry store jobs and her studies to become a gemologist. As her dream of owning her own shop took shape, she launched A. Kenney Jewelry in 2016 at the Taylor Center in Corpus Christi. She has been a blessing to The One Bride Guide and the community ever since.
there are new treasures to look at every day. We’ve had the pleasure of borrowing some of A. Kenney’s most exquisite jewels for our cover shoots. Treasure hunting in her store for pieces that fit our theme has become a favorite part of the process— and we understand how the jewelry business can get addicting. Many of our favorites end up on personal wish lists. My list gets updated with every cover shoot!
theonebrideguide.com • October 2026 – January 2027 {30}
“I am drawn to antique and vintage jewelry, because they made it better back then,” Ashley says. “Each piece was a masterpiece, a work of art by a craftsman.” Browsing the Florence ring inventory at A. photo by Resendez Studios Kenney is like getting a history lesson. Some gems have lofty origins— like a rose-cut diamond Ashley found in Florence that she believes may have come from a scepter or crown. The One Bride Guide had the pleasure of using that ring for a cover shoot before a customer quickly claimed it. Ashley sources jewels from all over the world, with Italy as her favorite place to shop. Spain is next on her bucket list. She has also purchased whole collections from major estates. Her love of learning serves her well in the gem and jewelry business. She went back to school and became the only Valuation Specialist in Gems and Jewelry in Texas. She loves finding unique pieces from customers, and if they appraise well, she will purchase them or sell them on consignment. Thanks to her constant sourcing and eye for handcrafted heirlooms,
This holiday season is a perfect time to get acquainted with A. Kenney’s collection. Ashley loves to host Wish List Parties for friend groups. She provides refreshments and treats while you and your ladies socialize, try things on, and pick out favorites. “Husbands seem to really love the wish lists,” Ashley reports. “I find many husbands don’t mind spending money if they already know you’ll adore it, plus they understand they are investing in long-lasting value.” The best part is shopping with no pressure. Many customers stop by regularly just to see Ashley’s newest discoveries. Looking ahead, Ashley hopes to bring more design and fabrication into A. Kenney Jewelry. Studying the work of expert craftsmen has given her the drive to create that same level of artistry for future generations. Beyond adorning her customers with sparkle, her biggest mission is to connect with people and help them however she can. “God gave me this business so I can reach people,” she says. “I have built wonderful relationships with my customers, and many have become great friends.” Before she became a gemologist, Ashley was working on a master’s to later pursue counseling. Surprisingly, she has counseled many people at her store. “I’ve often prayed with my customers. Connecting with people has become my biggest mission on earth.” You can sense Ashley’s love and care for the community—and especially her love for the Lord. “I owe my whole store to prayer,” she says. “I’m super blessed with my customers and so thankful for the opportunities to serve them.” A special bonus is getting to work with her mom, Susie. “I couldn’t do it without my mom,” Ashley says. “Her talent is always finding exactly what the customers want.” We are honored to have Ashley Kenney investing her time, talents, and treasures in our city. She is an expert curator, appraiser, and gemologist, and we have no doubt she will soon be an expert craftswoman as well. Ashley doesn’t just make us look good on the outside. She lifts us up and makes the world a little better. We can always benefit from a little more sparkle! Visit A. Kenney Jewelry in the Taylor Center at 3636 S Alameda Street, Ste J. Key items for every room in your home!
Note from The One: Registering for wedding gifts is a necessary evil in wedding planning, but it doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Keep a good attitude, be patient, and make sure to pick items you can live with for a long while. And guys, don’t ask WHY you need four different types of spoons. You never know when a spoon shortage is going to happen! But seriously, registering is a good thing. Your friends and family are provided with a list of gift items you actually want, instead of playing the guessing game about what in the world you might need for your new kitchen. Register for more than you think you’ll need and make sure you have lots of affordable items for all ranges of income levels. Keep this list handy while you are shopping and don’t get overwhelmed. Remember, you can always return things if you change your mind!

Ask your bride's father (or family member) for a marriage blessing. Tell your families and friends that you got engaged. Communicate with your brideto-be and ask her what tasks you can help with. Listen, Listen, Listen. Sign up & get free planning tools at www.theone.community.
Register for wedding gifts (get this over with early so friends & family can buy gifts for engagement events).
Schedule any pre-nuptial classes or counseling (sometimes required by religions).
Help with thank-you notes before and after the wedding.
Prepare your vows.
Choose a best man. Choose your groomsmen (use one usher per 50 guests).
Get a marriage license.
Discuss who will be paying for the wedding, if relevant, and start a wedding budget.
Finalize date and time.
Go over health insurance information, legal papers and get a prenup if necessary. Start a guest list - get input from your parents (you usually only send announcements to people you are inviting to the wedding).
Meet with the officiant.
Pick out and order tuxes and accessories.
Make sure groomsmen have info for ordering tuxes.
Find and reserve locations for the ceremony and the reception.
Reserve wedding night accommodations.
Buy and insure the wedding rings.
Arrange transportation for the entire wedding party for the wedding day events (consider that you will be arriving separately, but leaving as a couple). Buy your groomsmen gifts.
Hire a photographer.
Buy a special wedding day gift for your new spouse.
Hire a videographer.
Plan the honeymoon.
Do a cake tasting and pick out groom’s cake.
Have a bachelor party.
Find a caterer and choose menu. Send out invitations. Order alcohol for the reception.
Prepare toasts. Get a haircut and manicure. Do something sweet for your bride-to-be.
Words of Wisdom for Marriage - from friends of The One Marriage is about choosing each other again and again Nothing special comes without with grace! work. 31 years in, and we can look At the end of the day you are on the same team.
Remember, everyone has their highs and lows. When you’re married, it’s the spouse’s job to pick up the slack when the other one is at peak exhaustion. Be aware, and pick up the slack for each other.
back at what we built together. That takes effort and partnership. But the one piece of advice is based on a Bible verse where it says “two become one.” My wife and I never have and never will lead separate lives. We go everywhere and do everything together, and will not go to any place where the other isn’t welcomed equally.
Compromise on the ceiling fan at night.
Communication is EVERYTHING!
Stay on the same team, no matter what. It’s the two of you against the world.
Being married isn’t about happiness — it’s about serving. Serve and love your spouse well, and you will find true joy!
Have the difficult conversations sooner. Don’t stay silent on the things that bother you. They fester.
Never disrespect one another. You can never get that back. Respect is everything.
Find at least one good hobby that you can do together. Something that both of you can participate in and enjoy.
No TV in the bedroom. Communicate. Compromise. Play together.
Pursue Christ first, both husband and wife. The closer you get to Christ, the closer you will be to each other.
Ephesians 5:22-33 — make it work. • The wife has three verses and the husband nine. • Submission is not giving up, but is giving all you are and can do for the marriage (see 1 Samuel 25, and see that Abigail was not without power in her household. She corrected her husband’s error to keep him alive.) • Husbands elevate your wives, not keep them in subjugation. You give 100 percent and your wife gives 100. There is no 50/50. Are you going to give your wife 1/2 your love? Are you going to give her 1/2 your care? 100/100 is the key. Keep accounts joint. The greatest gift you We’ve been married over can give your spouse is 30 years and we’ve only forgiveness, because you had three accounts: one checking, one savings, don’t realize how much and one “escrow” account you’re going to have to for taxes and insurance. give it and how much All are joint. What’s hers you’re going to need it. is mine and what’s mine is hers. It’s a single household and expenses are expenses. There are no “my expenses” or “her” expenses. They are ours. That is where money arguments start. We don’t make major purchases without consulting each other. If the money is there, and we want to get something, it’s a nonissue. They become issues when you are “borrowing” from one another, or you split expenses, because your accounts are separate. When you are married, you become one. Treat your finances the same way, and make good decisions together.
A marriage is a choice every day. How does that look in your day-to-day and in the long run? Even when you’re frustrated, choosing to love your spouse, sometimes with words, sometimes with service, and always by prioritizing them, you will strengthen your marriage every day (even when things are hard). We choose how we act out our love. Make good choices for each other. Hang your favorite picture of the two of you next to the bed so you can go to sleep with that in your mind. Make sure to take the time to really talk to one another. When the other one is talking, listen!! Be gracious to one another and give the benefit of the doubt to your partner. Eat at least one meal together every day. Even better if you prepare it together. Cuddle, cuddle, cuddle! Give each other lots of kisses of all kinds! Quick pecks, sloppy, long and lingering... etc. Study your partner. Really get to know him/her... quirks, habits, preferences, etc.
Listen to understand, not just to respond.
Have daily conversations without electronic distractions.
Your sense of fulfillment is directly related to the quality and quantity of your investment in your marriage.

One cooks, one cleans the dishes. It creates a balance that sets the tone for the inherent give and take of marriage.
Don’t let the business of life, or even kids, prevent you from truly investing in one another. Take the time to nurture each other. Make it be a gift you give your spouse. If you’re focused on how you can love your spouse better and more fully than the day before, your love and respect for each other will be unbreakable, and you will be able to weather any storm life throws at you. Marriage is harder when you’re selfish. That’s why focusing on what you can give, more than what you’re getting, is so important. You’ll definitely make mistakes, definitely disappoint one another, but the bond will remain because you’ll be able to give each other the grace to be imperfect.
It’s okay to go to bed angry…. just don’t wake up that way.

VOWS AND
VICTORIES
THE SCOREBOARD TRAP by Dr. Chris Stapper Imagine a game where you are handed ten dollars. There’s only one catch: you have to share it with another person. You get to propose how to split the money, and the other person can either accept your offer or reject it. If they accept, you both walk away with cash. If they reject it, the deal blows up, and you both get absolutely nothing. Logically, if you offer the other person just one dollar and keep nine for yourself, they should accept it. After all, one dollar is better than zero dollars. Free money is free money. But when behavioral economists actually run this experiment, known as the Ultimatum Game, that is rarely what happens. Time and again, when the split feels too unequal, the second person will choose to blow up the deal entirely. They would literally rather walk away with nothing than accept an offer that makes them feel like they got less than the person across the table. We are wired to keep score. We naturally look at what the other person is putting on the board, compare it to our own stats, and fiercely guard against falling behind in the standings.
theonebrideguide.com • October 2026 – January 2027 {46 }
And if we aren’t careful, we carry that exact same scoreboard right into our marriage. In a relationship, it is incredibly easy to treat daily life like a version of the Ultimatum Game. We silently tally up who is doing more, who is sacrificing more, and who is getting the better deal. We think: “If I do the dishes tonight, they need to take out the trash.” “I let them choose the movie last time, so it’s my turn.” “If I’m giving eighty percent and they’re only giving twenty, I’m getting ripped off.” When we live by the scoreboard, we begin to view our spouse as an opponent rather than a teammate. We protect our own interests so fiercely that we’d sometimes rather let the peace of our home blow up than feel like we are giving more than we are receiving. But a healthy marriage requires a completely different mindset. It asks
us to do something that defies modern psychology and economic logic: to intentionally honor our spouse above ourselves. Choosing to honor your partner means actively looking for ways to elevate them, serve them, and consider their needs, even when it feels like the scales may be unbalanced. It means shifting the question from “What am I getting out of this right now?” to “How can I value you today?” Now, let’s be very clear about what this does not mean. Choosing to honor your spouse is not an invitation to become a doormat. It is not an excuse for toxic exploitation or abuse, where one person always takes and the other is hollowed out by constant, unreciprocated demands. True honor is an act of incredible strength, not weakness. It takes deep emotional maturity and confidence to lay down your ego for the health of your relationship. Marriage goes through inevitable ebbs and flows. There will be seasons like a stressful stretch at work, a health crisis, or the exhaustion of newborn sleeplessness where one person will naturally carry a heavier share of the load. When you stop playing the Ultimatum Game, you realize that giving more in a tough season isn’t a loss. It’s an investment in the promise you make on your wedding day. You aren’t guarding your slice of the pie; you’re building a lifetime foundation of safety and trust. And when you live out that commitment, you discover that pouring into your spouse actually creates a richer, more secure environment for you to thrive in as well. So how do we practice this kind of honor in the ordinary, everyday rhythms of life? Here are three ways to start right now:
Attention It is easy to look at our phones, nod our heads, and pretend we are listening. True honor gives the gift of full presence. Practice actively listening to your spouse
without interrupting or formulating your comeback while they talk. When they share about their day, put the screen down, make eye contact, and listen simply to understand, not to fix or judge. It sends a powerful, daily signal: “What matters to you matters to me.”
Anticipation We often wait to be asked before we help out, or we secretly expect a gold star when we do. Honor looks ahead. Notice the small chores, the low gas tank, or the brewing coffee pot, and take care of it before your partner even has to ask. Viewing these small tasks not as domestic obligations, but as quiet opportunities to serve, shifts the entire atmosphere of your home from transactional to generous.
Appreciation Resentment grows in the silence of things taken for granted. We might feel grateful internally, but honor requires vocal expression. Move past general, occasional thank-yous and start practicing specific appreciation. Notice the little things like how they handled a tough phone call, the way they organized a chaotic drawer, or their patience with a family member. Explicitly saying, “I noticed you did that, and I really appreciate it,” lets your spouse know they are truly seen. Every marriage ceremony involves big promises about better or worse, richer or poorer. But those massive vows are lived out in the smallest, most ordinary moments. You won’t perfectly balance the scales every single day. No one does. But when you trade the scoreboard for a commitment to honor, you stop worrying about who is winning the game. You realize that when you choose to lift up your spouse, you both win. Dr. Chris Stapper serves as Lead Pastor at Third Coast Church in Corpus Christi, Texas.
