The President’s Message

I am proud to be a relative of Sir John Monash, the first Chairman of the precursor to The Graduate Union in 1911, and honoured to have been given this opportunity as your President to continue supporting and nourishing the life-long learning that will help us find solutions to the many global challenges. The Graduate Union is a unique institution at the University of Melbourne because we provide a friendly and supportive environment for graduates of any age, life-stage, discipline and culture to come together to advance research, careers, social good and life-long learning.

I wish to sincerely thank the many members of the Graduate Union who have generously donated to our annual giving campaign which enables the Graduate Union to continue to provide its wide-ranging programs and services to all our members and also helps support our impressive graduate student residents. As a result, the Graduate Union grows in importance within the University of Melbourne and in the wider community. I also wish to thank our Council and its Chair, The Honourable Justice Tony Pagone, for their considerable work in advancing the interests of the Graduate Union. Our CEO, Dr Kerry Bennett, and all the staff are devoted to the well-being of the Graduate Union and deserve our gratitude.

2013 has been a very successful year for growing our emphasis on all things ‘collegial’. We have presented a comprehensive GU Collegiate program that meets the needs of the many different segments of our graduate community. We have established GUCA (Graduate Union College Alumni) and begun the process of trying to locate all past residents of the college. The Graduate Union Tutor Program now has over fifteen tutors and we have a large number of Resident and non-resident Member groups meeting regularly at Graduate House and/or online through our numerous social media forums.

We have had a terrific response from the membership to our vision for an endowment program of scholarships and fellowships, for strengthening our relationship with other graduate membership associations and residential colleges, and for providing opportunities to develop as international interdisciplinary teams that will contribute meaningfully to society. I thus extend gratitude to all Members for their support in continuing our proud history while sustaining and advancing these worthy initiatives.

The Chair of Council’s Message

I am pleased to present the 2013 Annual Report of The Graduate Union of The University of Melbourne Incorporated in the first edition of this 68th volume of The Melbourne Graduate.

This report outlines a variety of activities undertaken by the Association for the benefit of its Members during the 2013 calendar year. These have been achieved in a cost-effective and financially responsible manner, leading to a break even financial outcome for the year with benefits being passed back to Members by way of improved residential and meeting facilities, communications and networking opportunities.

Over 2013, full Council and its committees met on near forty occasions. The amount of work that has been achieved collectively has been extraordinary and I congratulate and thank our hard working Council and committee members for their commitment and dedication to this Association. Late in December 2013, we were very pleased to welcome to Council, Jennifer Batrouney QC who not only brings appropriate and needed skills and expertise but a longstanding family involvement with the Association, her mother also being a Life Member.

2013 saw us consolidating and implementing our Strategic Plan and establishing new terms of reference for our newly named standing committees (Buildings and Facilities; Membership and Marketing; Finance and Audit; Governance and Nominations; and Remuneration). We placed considerable emphasis on reworking the constitution to ensure that we respect history and traditions, continue to serve our Members effectively and with good governance, and meet the requirements of regulatory authorities. The new Rules are presented to Members for their consideration at the annual general meeting on the 29th May, 2014.

The Association is positioned well to build further on the advances which have been made in recent times. I extend my congratulations to the CEO/Head of College, Dr Kerry Bennett, and her hard-working team for another year of success and a job well-done, and I look forward to continuing strong performance and growth of the Association in 2014.

The CEO/Head of College’s Message

2013 has been a wonderful year and one full of achievements.

Firstly to our Members. I remain honoured to learn more from and about you, and am grateful for your continued, increasing and active engagement with The Graduate Union. It is with pleasure that we were able to recognise some of these contributions at the 2013 Chairman’s Cocktail Reception (see opposite) and to publish many interesting stories sent to us from Members based all around the world. We had a good response to our 2013 survey, and our Association has benefitted by being able to identify and continue our strengths, while reducing gaps between the needs of our Members and our performance. Similarly, we value the constructive feedback received throughout the year. This has assisted us considerably and informs our continuous quality control programs in all areas.

Support from Members has also come in the form of bequests and donations. Thank you. Not only does it demonstrate to all that you care about this long-standing organisation, it shows understanding of the need for us to sustain and to grow. Over 2013, we have developed plans for a major fund-raising and benefactions program and have received valuable suggestions and introductions from Members who have responded to our preliminary ‘Call to Arms’ and our annual giving program. I encourage all Members to join these efforts.

I congratulate our many Resident Members on acknowledging this unique and (probably) never to be repeated time in their lives. Not only are you all studying/researching/teaching at very high academic levels, and a long way from home, but you are embracing the opportunity to sit at ‘brekkie’ or dinner with the equivalent of what could be perceived as the GU United Nations.

Your networking and communication initiatives have enabled us to develop further our collegial culture; and as a result of your great work, we now have a representative Residents’ Group, a strong GU Tutor program, self-organising collegial groups that have been designed to sustain notwithstanding our regularly changing residential population and many new approaches to welcoming and including new Residents Members. Additionally, many of you have shared

your ‘graduate pathway’ story by standing up at our monthly Meet and Greets and speaking to other Resident Members, or by sending in your stories and achievements for publication. Our nonresident Members are keen to support you and are better able to do so by knowing about you and your life goals.

I describe the staff at Graduate House as the best in the world, and from the evidence at hand, believe Chair of Council, The Hon Justice Tony Pagone presenting appreciation awards to Francesca Folkthat this is not only my perception. Throughout Scolaro, Zoe Ma, Anne Mulholland, Betty Keay and Tim Stephens. Awardees Milena Glasson and 2013, and together with our strong Council and Graham Skewes were apologies for the evening. all the committees and working parties, we have been able to construct, launch and implement a sound three-year Strategic Plan. We have put in place several mechanisms to respond to recommendations in the Member survey with responsiveness, timeliness and professionalism. We have continued to make strong headway with our governance reform program and improvements to internal financial controls. We have undergone an inventory of our organisational effectiveness and have implemented measures to strengthen our achievement and effective culture.

As you will glean from this 2013 Annual Report, our productivity and quality of service levels have continued to rise. College occupancy rates were higher, nearly 22,000 delegates attended academic and professional development meetings here at Graduate House, and we prepared over 90,000 meals throughout the year. On-time, on-budget and with minimal disturbance to our occupants and visitors, we have continued to improve our buildings and facilities; and now have the Davey Lofts, a modern and safe kitchen for use by Resident Members, a bicycle shelter, a secure and safe back fence, reverse cycle air conditioners in every room and the majority of the rooms in our terraces completely refurbished. All of this has been achieved while undertaking a higher level of ‘business as usual’ and a comprehensive GU Collegiate program for Members.

I am grateful for the sound leadership provided by the Chair of Council, The Hon Justice Tony (Gaetano) Pagone, and congratulate him on his award of the degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) from The University of Melbourne on the 15th March, 2014 in recognition of his published work on anti-avoidance provisions, including his book entitled Tax Avoidance in Australia. Our President, Major General Professor Jeffrey V Rosenfeld, is also an inspiring leader. Testament to this was his award in June 2013 of an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of The British Empire (OBE) from the Queen through the Governor General of Papua New Guinea for establishing neurosurgery services across Papua New Guinea and for his support of The University of Papua New Guinea. Our Association is indeed fortunate to have the support of these gentlemen.

2013 Councillor Attendance Your Council works hard to sustain and grow our Association. Many of your Councillors attend The Graduate Union for meetings weekly and contribute much more than is indicated in the schedule of governance meetings from the 1st of January to the 31st December 2013, shown in the table below. Governance and Nominations Having taken up the position of Chair of the Governance and Nominations committee early in 2014, I provide this brief summary report for 2013 based on my research of the activities of this committee before my appointment to this position.

Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission 2013 was the first full year of complying with the requirements of the new national regulatory authority named the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) established late 2012. A key task for the newly named Governance and Nominations Committee was thus to audit our policies and procedures in relation to five governance standards required by the ACNC: Standard One Standard Two Standard Three Standard Four Standard Five

Purposes and not-for-profit nature of a registered entity; Accountability to members; Compliance with Australian laws; Suitability of responsible entities; and Duties of responsible entities.

Having systematically addressed over 150 recommendations from governance and forensic accounting reviews in 2010, 2011 and 2012, The Graduate Union was well positioned to address each of these standards with minimal amendments to its existing regulations, systems and policies. Further, and notwithstanding the expressed intent by the current government to abolish the ACNC, I believe that all these past and ongoing measures to improve our governance will hold the organisation in good stead well into the future.

Our Constitution A great deal of work was undertaken throughout 2013 to revise and review our constitution and to determine whether to continue as an incorporated association or to change to a company limited by guarantee. My understanding is that this process has been robust, debated carefully and comprehensively and that the final decision at the conclusion of 2013 to remain as an incorporated association has been in the very best interests of Members, this long-standing association and our future.

Since 1990, the current Statement of Purposes and Rules have served The Graduate Union, as a charitable, not-for-profit incorporated association, well. However, The Graduate Union has grown significantly over this last 24 years. Victorian state legislation for incorporated associations has undergone significant reform and there is now a new Act (Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012) and new Model Rules. As outlined in the previous section, the ACNC has regulatory authority over all charities and not-for-

profits across the nation. While this Act remains, The Graduate Union must adhere to the new governance and reporting standards of the ACNC to maintain its charitable and not-for-profit status.

Council has thus developed a new set of Rules that are being submitted to Members in advance of the annual general meeting on the 29th May, 2014. In these new Rules, the underlying objectives and character of The Graduate Union are maintained, and our history and traditions are respected. Continued growth of the organisation will be supported and the charitable and not-for-profit purposes of our Association will be sustained. The changes have been made to ensure that The Graduate Union continues to serve its Members effectively and with good governance, and to meet the requirements of regulatory authorities.

Committee Structure The following is a schematic diagram of a new committee structure that was adopted

by Council mid 2013. These committees are not too dissimilar to those to which Council has been delegating authority over the last few years and have been designed to assist Council in continuing to provide the appropriate governance oversight to the major operational areas of the association. Terms of reference for these committees have also been developed and these have been included in the new set of regulations.

Regulation Pack The Graduate Union Regulations are an additional set of guides for good governance.

They have been developed over 2013 to provide more specific details about the protocols for Council and its delegated authorities. Over 2014, these six regulations will be amended to ensure that they are compatible with the new Rules.

Council Code of Conduct Committees Elections Conduct of Governance Meetings Conduct of General Meetings Supervision and Control of Members and Visitors.

Governance and Nominations Committee As specified in the newly adopted terms of reference, the general role of the Governance and Nominations committee is to establish excellence in governance practice, to formulate and review policies and practices relating to the effectiveness of Council and of Council committees, and Council succession planning. More specifically, the committee: • oversees Council’s compliance with its governance obligations established by external regulatory authorities; • establishes, reviews and recommends improvements to governance policies; • reviews and recommends changes to the structure and functioning of Council and of Council committees for effective governance; • encourages the understanding by Councillors of their governance role and responsibilities; • ensures there is a process in place for annual updating of a strategic plan; • researches and recommends improvements to the proceedings of Council in relation to meetings, written resolutions of Councillors, Councillors’ interests and minutes and registers; • supports the undertaking of periodic reviews of the terms of reference for each committee; • supports the undertaking of periodic reviews of the performance of each committee and professional development for Councillors; • monitors adherence to the Council Code of Conduct (see Regulation Number 1); and • establishes and pursues a procedure for identifying and securing suitable future candidates for election or co-option to Council.

Graduate Union Council Election As a result of the call for nominations published in the January/February Newsletter, four valid nominations have been received for three vacancies. A poll will therefore be held, with voting closing at 4.00pm on Friday, 23rd May, 2014.

A voting paper, a small yellow envelope marked ‘Voting Paper’ and an outer reply paid return addressed envelope, in which the small envelope containing the voting paper is to be placed, are all enclosed with this Melbourne Graduate and May Newsletter to all members. If you have not received them, please contact The Graduate Union office immediately.

Should you have any privacy concerns, you may, having completed the declaration on the envelope addressed to the Returning Officer, enclose that envelope within a larger plain envelope and address it in the manner identical to that shown on the envelope addressed to the Returning Officer, before posting or delivering to the Returning Officer, as directed on the voting paper.

Personal Statements from Candidates *COBBIN, Phillip Edward, BBus(RMIT), DipEd, BEd, MEd, MCom(Hons), PhD Proposer – Merren Rosemary Cliff Seconder – Colin John Cox There are a number of very important conversations that will be needed in the near future on the mission and future direction of the Graduate Union. The ‘steadystate’ developed in recent years and the strong sense of collegiality and common-purpose on Council provides the ideal environment for these matters to be considered and decisions made. At the same time the work of the Union continues and Council oversight is imperative.

I am standing for re-election to Council because I believe I have the necessary commitment and skills to contribute not only to the oversight of the present but also to the conversations that will determine the longer-term future. As a member of the staff for over twenty-five years and alumnus of the University I am acutely aware of, and well placed, to appreciate the importance of the Graduate Union within the wider life of The University of Melbourne.

CAMERON, Richard Ewen, BArch(Melb) Proposer – Margaret Rose Robins Seconder – Barbara Anne Funder Since joining the GU, I have been appointed, by Council, to the Buildings and Facilities Committee, elected Chair of the William Berry Working Party, and further endorsed for 2014.

The renovated resident kitchen, and significant planning initiatives have been achieved during my watch. Extensive professional secondment to China, India, Bahrain and UK, has generated a total respect for cultural sensitivities, and residing away from home, a great affinity with our residents.

As a board member of community groups, and recreational clubs, I have always sought out the expectations of members, as fundamental input, and when involved in international sporting and diplomatic activities, ensured financial responsibility and planned logistics were paramount. I wish to contribute and improve our College further by • promoting far more financial management, and operational responsibility.

BCom(Accounting)(Melb) Proposer – David Norman Sparks Seconder – Barbara Anne Funder

Jennifer has been a Life Member of the Graduate Union for over 20 years and was co-opted to the Council of The Graduate Union last year. She graduated with an honours degree in law and a commerce degree majoring in accounting from the University of Melbourne in 1987. She is a highly respected and sought after advocate and advisor and was appointed a Senior Counsel for the State of Victoria (formerly QC) in 2000. She is a director of the Law Council of Australia and of the Australian Charity Law Association. She is a member of the Victorian Bar Council and is Vice President of the Tax Bar Association. She was president of Australian Women Lawyers in 2003-2004.

Jennifer is passionate about maintaining Graduate House as a vital meeting place for graduates to interact with each other and with those studying at the University of Melbourne.

WATSON, Rhys Albert John, BBus(Accounting)(RMIT), MCom(Management)(Melb) Proposer – R Kingsley Davis Seconder – David Norman Sparks The vision of an inclusive association of graduates from all universities has inspired generations of men and women.

The Graduate Union has evolved to meet the changing needs of all graduates. Inspired by “Graduates for Post Graduates,” residential accommodation is provided for several hundred graduate students each year, world class meeting facilities are available to not for profit organisations, and there is a meeting place for graduates to relax and exchange ideas.

Understanding and meeting the aspirations of current and future graduates provides a firm foundation on which to build a successful and relevant future for our Graduate Union. Members of the Graduate Union have been at the forefront of Philanthropic support of Tertiary Education. I now seek your support, as we work together to meet the challenges of the future in a way that is consistent with our heritage as part of the international collegium.

Membership and Marketing Our (now) 103 year old Association continues to be strong, contributing and vibrant because of its Members - those in residence, those in Melbourne and Australia, and those based in other parts of the world. These Members continue to honour the charter as put in our 1911 objects: ‘to bring the Life and Thought of the University and of the Community into more direct relation with each other; to provide an organisation by means of which public discussions of University problems and lectures by distinguished visitors and others could be arranged; thirdly, to bring past members of the University in closer touch with one another.’

Membership At the 31st December, 2013, The Graduate Union had 2026 Members as compared to 2067 by the end of 2012.

As shown in the bar graph below, the lower number of Life Members is reflective of this period in our Association’s history where some of our older Members have passed away. The number of Members in other categories has remained relatively stable, with slight increases in the number of Regular (non-resident) and Resident Members and a slight decrease in the number of Organisation Members.

A total of 235 new Members was admitted to The Graduate Union in 2013. The following bar graph represents the number of members who joined each month; and illustrates the semester fluctuation of new Resident Members joining predominantly before Semester One over our Australian summer months and before Semester Two in the winter months.

Member Survey The Graduate Union Membership Survey was conducted in May 2013 by an independent external firm, Survey Matters, to gain feedback from Members on the range of activities undertaken by The Graduate Union in order to better understand the value provided to Members so that we may continually attract new Members, improve the services offered, and provide ongoing value in order to retain existing Members.

The specific objectives in undertaking a survey of our Members were to: • create a profile of Members; • understand how Members hear about The Graduate Union, and why they decide to join; • understand which benefits and services provided by The Graduate Union are considered most important by Members; • measure the perception of Members of the success of The Graduate Union in providing these services; • understand how Members would like to communicate with The Graduate Union, and what they think of current communications; and • measure overall Member satisfaction, renewal intentions and advocacy.

In total 408 responses were received. Just under half of these were sent to Survey Matters in the post. The remainder were received via the on-line survey, the link to which had been provided in an invitational email and on our website. We are grateful for all who took the time to complete the survey. We consider the results both as baseline, from which we can measure success with various initiatives in the future, and directional, from which we have already developed strategic objectives and implemented a number of new initiatives and quality improvements.

The key findings from the survey were not surprising. Membership of the Graduate Union was comprised in large majority by Life Members, aged over 60 years. This has obvious implications for The Graduate Union in respect to membership growth and retention. It also informs us of the importance of continuing both to serve this important and valued segment of our membership and to continue to develop methods to attract new members from those graduates who are approaching the end of their careers and from those who are retired. The knowledge, skill and experience ‘bank’ is important to The Graduate Union.

Motivations for belonging to The Graduate Union appear to be changing. Life Members and those aged over sixty years overwhelmingly had heard about the Graduate Union upon graduation, when they then purchased their Life membership in order to maintain a connection with the university community. However, younger, graduate Members were increasingly hearing about the Graduate Union via word of mouth and The University of Melbourne website and Accommodation Service, and were joining in order to access the accommodation and dining facilities.

We are thus implementing measures to increase our marketing to potential members before and as they commence post-graduate studies - for example, by hosting information stalls at GradExpo and during Orientation Week, as well as by increasing our on-line presence - while also exploring ways to attract those graduating from undergraduate and post-graduate courses.

The residential college is a valuable source of new members.

Access to residential facilities was reported as amongst the main reasons for joining by 59% of new Members; and provision of residential facilities is the most highly rated strategic service - 81% of Members having agreed that The Graduate Union provides quality facilities and support services.

Just over half of the respondents who had stayed at Graduate House indicated that they would retain their membership after having been a resident. A key development objective in recent months has thus been to raise this proportion by reminding exiting residents that they have only just begun to experience the benefits of being part of a truly global inter-disciplinary collegium that can have significant career benefits.

Younger Members and Members who had held their membership for less than ten years were more likely to consider the provision of dining facilities and opportunities to network as more important than older Members. This was reflected in newer Members being more likely to utilise the facilities than older Members, with 45% of respondents who had been Members between two and ten years reporting that they have visited the Graduate Union more than eight times in the past twelve months. Only 11% of the new and younger graduate Members had not visited in the last twelve months, compared to 49% of Life Members.

We recognise acutely that many of our older Members are no longer able to visit us or attend our functions; and are thus striving to make our communications to these Members as inclusive and as informative as possible. As expressed by many of our older Members, though they regret no longer being able to attend functions at Graduate House, they nonetheless feel part of the broader graduate community, look forward

to receiving the newsletters and Melbourne Graduate periodicals, and feel able, from a distance and through donations and bequests, ‘to contribute to the wellbeing of our next generation of professionals’ and for the betterment of society.

Members value good management and good governance above all strategic functions, and though ranking satisfaction with management and governance highly, these both had strategic performance gaps. As Members will be aware, we have put in a comprehensive program of reforms and quality control systems over the last two years and are hopeful to see a reduction in the value/performance gaps for governance and management with the next major survey of the membership in 2016.

The most satisfied Members were those who had been Members for between two and ten years. Conversely, younger and new Members were the least engaged with their membership. The challenge for The Graduate Union is thus to understand the factors that are driving satisfaction with Members who progress to hold their membership longer than two years. With 76% of members expressing the view that The Graduate Union offers both a caring, secure and collegiate environment and quality dining and hospitality services, we are proud to continue to strengthen these important features of the membership experience.

Marketing and Publications 2013 saw major revamps to the majority of The Graduate Union publications and marketing material. Many Members will have seen this change with the evolving design of our newsletter, the return of the Melbourne Graduate periodical cover to the style used for the inaugural 1950s volumes and the new design for our annual calendar.

The Marketing and Publications team has also been developing a new series of booklets designed to be aesthetically pleasing, informative and tailored to specific service areas.

The covers of the four completed booklets are shown below: (1) Member benefits; (2) how Organisation Members and other groups can book and use the academic and professional development meeting services; (3) how to advertise with The Graduate Union; and (4) how The Graduate Union is seeking to raise major funds and to develop a benefactions program.

The team has also been busy in developing new poster and flyer designs for the marketing of the many Graduate Union run (GU Collegiate) functions. Many of you may have

noticed the new Twilight Lecture Series poster design or the updated designs for the Sunday Music Program. Hard copies of these flyers and posters are distributed widely within our facility, about universities and by our many Members in their workplace and social communities. Website and Social Media Many newcomers to The Graduate Union learn about our services through our website and social media platforms. The website, our virtual ‘front door’ is divided into pages that inform visitors to the site about our organisation, the college accommodation, the meeting services, the schedule of our events and the many benefits of being a Member of our association. Late in 2013 we began a process of redesign, the current website having served us for over five years and yes, like all things technology-based, it has become out of date. This major project is anticipated for completion in 2014.

All of our membership, college accommodation and meeting services, together with the GU Collegiate functions are also marketed through several Member and nonmember email distribution lists, through on-line newsletters (such as that for staff at The University of Melbourne) and on fifteen Melbourne event websites.

Additionally we market through social media channels. As at the 31st December, 2013 the ‘statistics’ (i.e., number of followers or viewers, number of ‘likes’ or ‘shares’) was as follows: 301

Meeting Services As Members know, we are a charity and not-for-profit organisation established for the advancement of education for the benefit of the community. We are thus very proud to offer meeting services to organisations and groups from the education, charitable, not-for-profit and government sectors.

In 2013, The Graduate Union had 914 bookings for meetings and functions. This is exclusive of GU Collegiate events, governance meetings and individuals/groups frequenting the dining room and bar. In total, there were 21,756 delegates with an average attendance for each meeting or function of 21 delegates (range 2-170).

The logos for some of the 279 groups that used our facilities in 2013 are shown on these two pages, and illustrate that we are assisting other not-for-profits with their charters also for the advancement of education for community benefit. As indicated from the 2013 Membership Survey, our repeat clientele and the feedback that we receive consistently, our success is because we provide a quietly elegant, welcoming, high quality and convenient service that includes flexible configurations for the room layouts, audiovisual facilities and a range of catering options.

Culinary Section and the Bar Our in-house kitchen provides meals for the dining room, all catering for GU Collegiate functions and, as outlined in the previous section, a diverse range of catering options for the meeting services. The following graph shows the approximate number of meals prepared each month by the Culinary Section. Exclusive of the catering provided for meeting services outlined in the previous sections (for near 22,000 delegates), the total number of meals prepared in 2013 was just over 70,000, an average of just under 200 per day. Resident Member meals (seven breakfasts and five meals each week) comprise up to 94% of these meals, with the remaining meals being for a regular clientele of nonresident Members (3%), non-members (2%) and Loyalty Card holders (1%) primarily for lunch on weekdays.

GU Collegiate Over 2013, The Graduate Union continued to offer a large range and variety of events to foster networking, continuous learning and academic, career and social experiences.

Collectively, these functions are termed ‘GU Collegiate’. They include the Monthly Luncheons and Twilight Lecture series, each with eminent guest speakers, a seminar series ,which for 2013 was focused on finance matters, excursions throughout Victoria and a host of other activities.

The table opposite shows attendance rates according to membership category throughout the year for some of these events. It lists neither the Meet and Greets for Resident Members (1x per month, 50-120 people) nor the regular self-organising

groups: Bridge Night (1x per week, 4-20 people), Friday Drinks and Dinner (1x per month, 10-20), Italian Conversation Dinner (1x per fortnight; 4-10) and the Women’s Forum (1x month; 6-20).

For 2013, there were approximately 130 GU Collegiate functions. For the 31 tabled below, the total attendance number was 1,611 for the year - 502 Life Members, 321 Regular (and Associate Members), 258 Resident Members and 530 non-members - and the average attendance was 56 (range 7-136).

2013 Monthly Luncheons Dally Messenger III

6th February

Ceremonies and Celebrations Dally recollected a beautiful ceremony that he performed in The Graduate Union library on the 14th of June 1979, joining in marriage fellow librarians Marie Dowling and Colin Watson. He believed it to be the first union of two librarians in a library. It was lovely to have Marie Dowling and her daughter in our audience to share this memory. Dally then went on to explain the rise in the number of Civil Celebrants and the two main ‘categories’ of Celebrants: Legalists and Ceremonialists.

A legalist is a Civil Celebrant who believes a civil marriage is only a legal contract whereas a ceremonialist is one who believes that a civil marriage holds a much deeper meaning. Dally is a well known pioneer and Don of Civil Celebrancy who is also the author of acclaimed book, Ceremonies and Celebrations. Dally feels that a masterful celebrant knows and works skilfully with human psychology and the human need to express emotion.

Depending on music to make you feel better: Good idea/Bad idea?

Katrina presented her research on the ways adolescents use music and on the detrimental effects of the unhealthy use of music. Focussing on how music affects mood and on the tendency to rely on music as an emotional regulator, Dr McFerran said music of any type is being associated with both positive and negative events in an adolescents life. Thus, their listening to music that has negative associations, no matter the type of music, can lead to adolescents becoming sadder.

She cautioned against the reliance on music to make oneself happier.

Furthermore, the qualities in music made little difference to the effect on mood - e.g., classical music may have the same effects as hard core metal. It simply depends on the person. In conclusion, she advised that vulnerable young people should be listening to music that matches their mood, rather than choosing music that ‘sounds like’ it would make the youth feel better.

The Future of the Art Museum Art museums are traditionally a symbol of a city’s cultural identity. This association was explained by Gerard as having origins in Paris during the 1960s and 1970s with the opening of Centre Pompidou and then Musée du Louvre, where establishment expenditure was greater than that for any other project at that time in the world. The Louvre has become the most popular art museum globally, attracting eight million visitors in 2012 alone. However, overcrowding and lack of air conditioning are contributing to a negative visitor experience. Parisians are also resenting the loss of their crowd-free local experience and the continued drain on public coffers. Dr Vaughan indicated that it is unlikely that Australian art museums will experience similar negative effects, Australia having a relatively low population and low number of tourists attracted to our art museums. He noted increasing pressure to chase attendance quotas by hosting popular international exhibitions, and expressed his continued hope for Australia to carve out its own international art museum experience through the hosting of deserving ‘minor’ exhibitions.

Tales from the political trenches Maxine spoke on the challenges that Australian schools face in the wake of poor performance reviews in comparison to international benchmarks. She drew attention to the 2012 Progress in International Reading and Literacy Study (PIRLS) ranking of the reading proficiency of primary school children and the finding that Australian primary school students ranked significantly below their international counterparts.

Maxine voiced concern that this trend may lead to an entire generation of Australian students struggling with critical thinking skills. She felt that Australian primary schools need a richer reading content throughout their curriculum and that teachers should know how to stretch their students’ knowledge and challenge their educational abilities. Ms Mckew said it is important for school principals and lead teachers to pursue an evidence based curriculum and use the upcoming funding to improve their student’s education.

The future of News In first exploring the history of journalism, Margaret outlined how the publication of news has disrupted power relationships and, over time, changed our idea of what it means to be human. The availability of online information has decreased newspaper sales and has led further to advertising becoming the key income source for paper-based news.

Websites are now offering cheaper, more efficient and more widely distributed advertising than newspapers. She thus sees it timely for the journalism industry to become innovative in order to survive financially, have sufficient and current resources to operate, and retain journalistic expertise and, indeed, the professonal discipline of journalism. Noting that online media and news content may not be from reliable sources, she explained the trend towards news becoming opinionated pieces written by the masses. Given also the ability for the newsreader to tailor their news reading experience, she predicts an increase in the contribution of journalism to smaller niche media outputs.

Australia’s economic future China’s growth over the last thirty years has been the most resource intensive in the world’s history. As a primary provider of raw materials to China, this has affected Australia. Mining sector growth has been significant; as have been exports from manufacturing. Employment in these area remains high, irrespective of ownership by off-shore parties.

In Tim’s view, non-ownership by Australian companies means less risk exposure to this volatile industry. It is more cost effective to export the raw materials and, primarily because of high wages, not competitive for the conversion in Australia of raw materials to exportable products.

Conversely, and obvously depending on the exchange rate, it may also be more economical for Australia to buy from overseas than make cars in Australia. Economic growth is not always a positive sign. Some large cities are facing significant negative public health effects from over-pollution, particularly in China.

Tim concluded his presentation by calling for development to remain ecologically and economically sustainable, and for the benefits of growth to be distributed fairly.

When all that remain are bones Characteristics such as age and gender are assumable from the shape and size of some skeleton parts. The science of identifying details from skeletons, first proposed in 1878, was furthered significantly after World War II because of the frequent need to identify casualties. One of the first laboratories for the purpose of forensic anthropology was built in Argentina, and to this day The Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team remains the leader in this field. Chris explained that the identification of remains and the determination of the time and cause of death is a process undertaken in conjunction with pathologists, radiologists and odontologists. For mass graves, he outlined the many complex processes taken by each of these professionals in the process of collecting the bones, and likened the macabre task of skeleton assemblies to working on several jigsaw puzzles at the same time. With fascinating insights into famous cases, none riveted the audience’s attention more than those of Australia’s legendary outlaw, Ned Kelly.

Silver tsunami or grey glacier - next generation issues in health and health care in Australia Health is a major portion of government spending, with the majority for ‘ill-health’. Besides population growth, ageing and inflation, almost two thirds of real health spending increase comes from factors affecting public hospitals, medical services and medication. These are changes by health professionals, rather than patient-driven changes. Although the above 85 years age group may double, expenditure to provide more public health services for this group will be countered somewhat by a predicted 25% less morbidity. These changes, however, are not rapid. Stephen thus suggested that the focus now should be on efficiency and reorientation of the health system, not budget cuts. He called for a reduction in the medical profession’s resistance to needed change, and for governments to put in the ‘hard yards’ to achieve sustainability. He added that while Australia has a good health system in international terms, it can and must still improve.

Profits and Pandemics Rob spoke about non-communicable diseases (NCD) and the major contributors to NCDs: alcohol, tobacco, unhealthy diets and physical inactivity. He spoke to the relative weights given to personal and societal responsibility for an individual’s health. Alcohol kills more people than Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), tuberculosis or malaria.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide and 366 million people live with type 2 (the acquired) diabetes. Well known soft drink companies have outstandingly clever marketing campaigns to attract young adults to be part of a popular culture which, unfortunately, contributes significantly to the NCD epidemic. Though great effort and finance is needed to deal with such big corporates, Rob stressed that going up against the business interests of powerful economic operators is one of the biggest challenges facing health promotion today. He expressed hope in the power of increasing the awareness of these dangerous ‘pandemics’ and called for all to take ‘societal responsibility’ by bringing about change at home, in schools and across our communities.

Women’s Forum The monthly Women’s Forum was conceived and started about sixteen years ago, in the late 1990s, by two Members, Patricia Boaden and Shirley Horne AM who thought that it would be a good idea to provide an opportunity for women to consider matters of interest in a structured and encouraging environment. At that time, they were simply “testing the waters” to see if there was any interest and were quite happy to let it go if there was not. Fortunately, there was, and one that has been sustained.

Since that time, female graduates (Members and non-members alike) have come together once a month to discuss such topics as politics, philosophy, current affairs, social history and contemporary society and then to continue conversations over lunch in the dining room. The aim has been to stimulate interest in local and world affairs and to foster, especially for those in caring roles or no longer in the workforce, nourishment of the brain and mind. Each topic is mutually agreed upon by the group from up to two to three months in advance so that participants have time to ponder and to fill spare moments in fruitful research; and is notified in the Monthly Newsletter. The topics are usually prompted by thoughts arising in the current discussion which merit further consideration or open up a new line of thought.

In keeping with the founders’ intention of keeping it stimulating and stress-free, there are a few simple rules. First, no-one needs to feel obliged to speak or to notify anyone about their intended presence or absence. Each participant has between five to ten minutes to speak, depending on the numbers present, where they have the privilege to express their views without interruption or comment from others. A key rule is ‘No comments till each person has had their say’, general discussions being withheld until after the last participant has finished speaking. The shared core value is ‘social inclusion’. All who attend express enjoyment in spending a few hours in a friendly, intimate verbal exchange where input from each woman is respected and valued. The number in the group varies considerably depending on the topic, the time of year, the weather or just the availability of the ladies. The women enjoy the company and an opportunity to express their views on a mutually agreed topic without the distraction of interruption. There are no expectations and no judgements!

2013 GU Tastings and Twilight Lectures Professor Geoffrey Blainey AC

Writing the history of the world Professor Blainey focussed his Twilight Lecture in March on his process for writing, rather than on the content of his famous publications. He started by explaining that the research for A Short History of the World (2000) was undertaken on luxury cruise liners which provided a ‘home base’ while he visited a large number of different countries to learn about many diverse cultures. Likening his writing of this book to a game of cricket, he would religiously stick to his word count, alternating between ‘fast-bowling’ fact sections with concise information about a particular era, and a slow-bowling pace to delve more into some topics.

For this book, these latter sections were particularly to tie together key areas of his historical interest: world geography, religious powers of the world and the influence of technology.

Professor Blainey explained how he strives to capture the sense of the experience of living in previous times. Unlike most historians who explain history as a preordained set of events, he prefers to acknowledge the power of history’s unexpected factors, and to design his narrative about the effects of these factors on the lives of people, their communities and on cultures and society as a whole.

In his view, his early experiences of writing with a fountain pen - typing being too expensive and undertaken by specialists at that time - gave him the fundamental training in understanding the sequence of a book. By his fourth book, he admitted to having mastered typing and moving to use a computer. Though he has since moved through various information technology developments that supported text composition and research, he expressed some ambiguity about the advantages of ‘cutting and pasting’ for the compilation of his particular works.

With the increasing popularity of his world history, Geoffrey felt obliged to update the original and shorten it for translation into several other languages. From the many pages of a Short History of the World emerged A Very Short History of the World which became more popular than the original. In this, his ‘fast-bowling’ pace was adopted more frequently and the balance between ‘cutting’ and ‘pasting’ was to the former!

On his latest book, A Short History of Christianity, Geoffrey said that again his approach had been to seek causation and the predication of patterns over time. He noted the cycles of rise, decline and revival that were features in the history of the world’s powerful religions; and the immense influence of these ‘ups and downs’ in Christianity on world history.

We thank Members for supporting our local food and wine industry by attending GU Tastings provided free of charge by the following generous groups before and after the Twilight Lecture.

Professor Zeger Degraeve Decision making for leaders

18th September

The September Twilight Lecture by energetic presenter, Professor Zeger Degraeve, commanded audience attention and their interactive engagement in the learning of how good decisions are made by leaders.

At the outset, the audience was invited to contribute $10 to become a project leader, and to gain the authority to decide on the position of a thumbtack, shaken and hidden under a cup. If guessed correctly, the business idea, by analogy, was deemed a success and with profit. If incorrect, the buyer would lose their $10 sunk cost. “Courageous” Mr Casey Tan took the challenge. A large part of the lecture was thence dedicated to posturing whether Mr Tan made a good or bad decision with this investment of $10, particularly when it could have been spent on purchasing the excellent wine produce from one of the providers for the GU Tastings.

Some salient lessons to be noted were that good results come alongside bad, and that good decisionmaking can lead to bad results, just as bad decision-making can lead to good results. Decision-making with objectivity, thorough analysis and skill is thus in the world of chance, luck, fate and the stars!

Zeger cautioned against correlating the decision-making skills of an employee (e.g., a manager in a company) with the outcomes of this decision-making (e.g., the success or failure of a major project assigned to this manager). Notwithstanding very good decisions based on the best analyses of available information, projects can fail.

The “project” turned out to be a success for Mr Casey! His $10 investment paid off and he received a return of $30 plus the original $10.

Mr Tan’s success was not a gamble at any point, as many of our attendees, when questioned, had suggested. Zeger explained quite thoroughly that there are statistical, algorithmic and logical decisionmaking processes that can be applied systematically in a business environment. As Mr Tan later put it: Aim, Alternatives, Attitude, Aptitude, Actions, Articulation, Audience and Achievements all govern the process of decision making and dictate the ability of a leader.

The Graduate Union is grateful for the kind “investment” donation from both Casey and Zeger.

2013 Music Sundays Coco’s Lunch

It was a day of fun for the multi-generational families at the I Wanna

be a Mermaid Coco’s Lunch performance in April. An accomplished group of singers and percussionists with group members comprising Gabrielle MacGregor, Lisa Young, Emma Gilmartin, Nicola Eveleigh and Jacqueline Gawler, their show was especially written for children.

The show opened with the group swimming into the room to the sound of breaking waves and then launching into their first number. It wasn’t long before the audience, young and not so young, was joining in. Some usually quite reserved Members were seen transforming magically into seaweed and various sea creatures as they waved their arms to the movement of the water, and then later releasing their inner seagull or pirate. The younger audience particularly seemed to enjoy the Wally the Wombat action song.

Many families participated in other activities before the performance - gaming for older kids, face painting for young ones, decorative henna painting, book displays and a presentation by Ann Dixon on dating historic photos by period dress, the lunch and the splendid afternoon tea where everyone had the opportunity to mingle with the performers.

Wilma and Friends

16th June

In an all Brahms program, Wilma Smith, concertmaster of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO), entertained us again at our June Music Sunday, together with Friends, Ian Munro, piano, and Saul Lewis, Principal Third Horn of the MSO. Wilma and Ian opened with Sonata No. 1 for violin and piano in G major, Op.78 immersing the audience instantly in the first Vivace ma non troppo movement of this famous Rain Sonata. Moving to the Adagio – più andante, the audience felt the weightier and serious tone of the middle movement with the rain motif adapted to a funeral march. The third movement, Allegro molto moderato, a rondo in G minor with coda in G major, gave clear thematic reference to Brahms’ Regenlied (rainsong) and feelings of passion and subtle amour. For the second half, Saul joined Wilma and Ian to perform Trio for Horn, Violin and Piano in Eb major, Op. 40. The performance well reflected the stages of mourning in this dedication composition by Brahms following the death of his mother in 1865. In a slow-fast-slow-fast movement sequence, the audience was taken from the deep mournfulness of the Andante to the lighter and playful ‘happy memory’ Scherzo (Allegro), followed by the solemn Adagio mesto - emphasised by the sombre entrance of violin and horn after the low register piano solo - and concluding with the Allegro con brio, a lively, joyful and said-to-be recoveryfrom-mourning impassioned finale.

In an all classic theme event for the day, members and guests enjoyed a hearty roast lunch before the concert and were able to peruse exhibits and displays from the Friends of Rippon Lea, Australian Tapestry Workshop and the Lyrebird Music Society. A lavish afternoon tea after the performance saw audience members taking the opportunity to meet with these worldclass performers. We extend congratulations to Ms Jill Blazer, Mr Leslie Dickson and Dr Jane McKellar who won Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC) tickets and our gratitude to MTC for these generous prizes.

Hoang Pham and Ji Won Kim

11th August

Talented pianist, Hoang Pham, and violinist, Ji Won Kim, gave a wonderful performance of spring flavoured music at the August Music Sunday. They brought adventure combined with brisk tempo and fiery rhythms and clever alternation between the melody and tempo using both instruments.

Highlight pieces included Beethoven’s Spring Sonata for violin and piano and the Sonata Pathétique for solo piano, a passionate and dramatic work demonstrating how Beethoven developed his distinct sonata form, breaking free from the classical constraints of Haydn and Mozart. Hoang then played an improvised introduction to the Beethoven sonatas to ‘set the scene’.

The artists also played Gounod’s Ave Maria, the famous transcription of the first prelude in Book 1 of Bach’s 48 Preludes and Fugues with the added melody line for violin, and Mendelssohn’s Spring Song.

Also performed were four well known works by Chopin, including two masterly transcriptions in which the ‘singing’ line was transferred to the violin. The concert concluded with a Heifetz arrangement of one of Rachmaninoff’s Études-tableaux (study pictures) which, as Hoang explained, ‘transfers the Russian composer’s finger busting piano writing to the violin in spectacular fashion’.

We congratulate Hoang Pham for winning the 2013 ABC Young Performer of the Year Award and, of course, Ji Won Kim for winning the same award in 2009! It is a privilege to have these extraordinarily talented performers at Graduate House.

Ken Murray and Doug de Vries

13th October

For the October Music Sunday, the theme was A day for everything Spanish. Talented musicians Ken Murray (pictured on the left) and Doug de Vries (right) entertained the audience with guitar music from the Spanish and Brazilian traditions, Ken having studied Spanish classical music and Doug, contemporary Brazilian.

With Sergio Assad’s magical Tres Cenas Brasileiras (‘three Brazilian scenes’), they played with rhythms and shifting harmonies evoking the spirit of Brazil, then shifted to a waltz, Flor Das Aguas (‘flower waters’)

by Marco Pereira, followed by two choros (‘little laments’, a Brazilian music genre from 19th century Rio de Janeiro): Tua Imagen (‘your image’) by Camhoto da Paraiba and the famous Lingua de Preto (‘language of the slaves in Portugal from the 16th century’) by Honorino Lopes. Next it was to Spain with Francisco Tarrega’s quiet Lagrima (‘tears’), then Manuel de Falla’s Homenaje, a sad homage to Debussy.

The following piece, by Angel Barrios from Granada, was La Petenera no ha Muerto (‘the Petenera’ - a very old song style - ‘has not died’) which references traditional Flamenco music. Returning to Falla we heard The Miller’s Dance from The Three Cornered Hat, originally written for orchestra and the Ballet Russe, and the well known lively Dance from the opera La Vida Breve (‘the brief life’).

The last two numbers were Esmeraldino Salles’ Arabiando with its syncopated rhythms of Brazil, and Jacob do Bandolim’s Santa Morena, a Spanish waltz with a Brazilian flavour. Following rousing applause, the performers returned to the stage to treat a grateful audience to a brilliant sambe encore compilation sourced from 21st century popular culture. Thank you Ken and Doug!

Finance Seminars The Graduate Union is grateful for the contribution of Mr Peter Clark (Member since 2005) and Mr Daniel Bozyk from DCA Advisors Pty Ltd who convened the 2013 Finance Seminar series. The four seminars for 2013 were held on the last Thursday of February, April, July and September. There were two sessions for each seminar, one in the afternoon from 12.00 noon to 1.00pm and the other in the evening from 5.00pm till 6.00pm. The seminars were provided free of charge by Mr Clark and were thus free of charge for Members, with the request for a gold coin donation from non-members.

At the first session entitled ‘Estate planning: what you need to know’, Peter spoke about the potential legal issues that can arise from wills, the circumstances of dying without leaving a will, testamentary trusts to beneficiaries who are under 18 years of age, the concept of ‘mutual will’ and the advantages of having a tax plan.

The April seminar focused on ‘Tax effective death’ where the audience learnt about dealing with capital gains that are taxable upon death in the hands of the executor and beneficiaries; and whether capital should be taken care of during a lifetime rather than leaving a tax debt to the beneficiaries. Superannuation entitlements that are subject to tax in the hands of dependants were also discussed. In July, we learnt about ‘Selfmanaged superannuation funds (SMSFs)’, how they are established, the costs involved, administration and trustee responsibilities of these funds, as well as the potentials for investment in property through these funds. The September seminar was a recap of the topics that were discussed throughout the year and a reinforcement of some of the strategies that could be adopted to lower taxation impacts.

College Garb The College Garb clothing range was introduced in 2012 to consolidate further our identity and culture as an international collegium of graduates and as the eleventh affiliated residential college of The University of Melbourne. The design brief was for high quality material, durability and ease of care, comfort, environmental friendliness and, of course, something that our Members would feel happy and proud to wear, no matter their age, discipline or gender. We partnered with RowBust, a company that produces high quality rowing garments that are 100% Australian made.

The popularity of our College Garb has soared in 2013 and we continue to feel very proud to see many of our Members, young and not so young, proudly wearing the clothes in and beyond Graduate House, and purchasing the garb for gifts (e.g., for graduation).

Fund-raising and Benefactions Working Party The Fund-raising and Benefactions Working Party was established in 2013 to define and implement a systematic, strategic and best-practice approach to raising major funds through bequests, fund-raising, donations, sponsorship, grants and other endowment sources. The members of this FAB Working Party over 2013 were our President, Jeffrey Rosenfeld, immediate past Chair of Council, David Sparks (Chair), Vivienne Corcoran (Vice Chair), Siôn Lutley, Bruce Watson, Gordon Duxbury, Deborah Seifert and Fausto Marasco.

The working party met regularly over 2013, submitting minutes of the meetings to the Membership and Marketing committee. It has begun to identify and give priority to endowment targets and donator acknowledgement methods (e.g., naming rights to the main building in return for a significant donation). A Call to Arms Dinner was held late November to garner support and advice from Members; and a brochure has been developed to explain the objectives for strategic identification and cultivation of major funds to support both short-to-medium term initiatives and growth for the future.

Membership and Marketing Committee As specified in the newly adopted terms of reference, the general role of the Membership and Management committee is to oversee the maintenance and growth of the Association’s membership, and the development and promotion of new or improved programs or services.

More specifically, the committee: • advises Council on the development of new or improved services or programs that strengthen The Association’s offerings to Resident Members, non-resident Members and the general public; • advises Council on marketing and communications strategies to increase Member numbers and Member participation; • reviews the fees, charges and conditions for membership and recommends any changes for adoption by Council; • monitors Member satisfaction with the Association’s services and facilities; • oversees the management of significant awards to, and recognitions of, Members and staff; • oversees advancement initiatives such as benefaction, sponsorship and fund-raising; • reviews and recommends to Council any updates to policies relating to the conduct of Members; and • reviews membership applications in accordance with the Association’s membership policy.

Throughout this very productive year, it has been a pleasure to work with the dedicated and knowledgeable members of the Membership and Marketing committee who in 2013 were Keith Ryall (Vice Chair), David Sparks, Siôn Lutley, Vivienne Corcoran and Andre Cleghorn; and joining us in 2014, Rhys Watson. My gratitude is extended also to the excellent staff teams who support the many and diverse membership services diligently and professionally, and with a friendly, welcoming and caring manner - our CEO/Head of College, Hospitality Manager and Guest Services team, our Membership Relations Officer, our Development Manager, our Systems Development Manager and the Publications and Social Media team.

Valete Dr Ralph William Howard MBBS The Graduate Union extends its condolences to the family and friends of Dr Ralph William Howard who passed away on the 19th December, 2013.

Dr Howard joined The Graduate Union as a Life Member in 1963 and served for various periods on the Executive Committee, the House Board and the Finance Committee and on other ad hoc committees.

In 1974, he was elected Vice-Chairman of the Graduate Council and later became Chairman from 1975 till 1977 and again from 1986 to 1987. He has said that he’s “the only Graduate Chairman who has been twice Chairman”. From 1995 till 1996, Dr Howard served as the President of The Graduate Union.

A Melbourne University MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) graduate, Dr Howard held various hospital appointments. In 1964, he was appointed the Federal Officer of the newly constituted Australian Medical Association. From 1965 to 1978, Dr. Howard was employed as a medical director in the pharmaceutical company, Glaxo Australia Pty Ltd which included a three-year term in Japan with his wife, Judith, and then young family. From 1976 to 1982, he was a Member of the Legislative Council for Templestowe Province and remained active in his profession. He also served as a member of the Council of La Trobe University from 1976 till 1986. In later years, Dr Howard maintained his support for The Graduate Union while continuing his medical practice with specialism in occupational medicine.

John (Jack) Francis MILLER, OAM The Graduate Union extends its condolences to the family and friends of Mr John (Jack) Miller who passed away on 17th January 2014. Jack joined The Graduate Union in 1958.

Secondary Colleges.

Jack was born at home in Windsor and went to Hampton High School, St Kevin’s College and later to The University of Melbourne. He taught at Hampton High School for many years and was appointed principal from 1976 to 1980. The Library was named after him. His service to this secondary school is remembered on two plaques in the Hampton High Park in Favril Street, Hampton. Jack was also Principal of Sunbury High School and Fitzroy High School and Acting Principal at other schools, including Brighton and Sandringham

After retirement Jack became a volunteer business manager for the John Pierce Centre for the Deaf for 10 years. In 1998, Jack’s community service was recognised with an Order of Australia medal. The citation read, “for service to people with impaired hearing through the John Pierce Centre and to the community”. For almost 40 years he was an active member of the Australia Day Council. He served as Victorian treasurer and later auditor; and was made a life member of the Council in recognition of his dedicated service. Jack contributed to the work of many other organisations including the Order of Australia Association, the Dante Alighieri Society, the Old Hamptonians, Red Cross and the Victorian State Secondary Past Principals Association.

He has received many honours, including the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International. He was a member of the Society of Certified Practising Accountants for over 55 years and was the honorary auditor for many not-for-profit bodies. As read by George Rowney in tribute, I can vouch for him as one of the kindest and most considerate persons known to me. graduateunionannualreport • 40

Bequests and Donations Bequests, donations of funds and buildings and support from philanthropy are acknowledged in many ways. Here we give examples of acknowledgement through naming of buildings and spaces at Graduate House. The four storey central wing remains unnamed and we have over 100 further unnamed spaces about the facility.

Sir Ian Potter The Ian Potter Room is a wellfrequented meeting room, so named to honour a large donation from The Ian Potter Foundation in 1987 to refurbish the dining area, at that time on the ground floor of the terraces.

Frank Leslie Stillwell A 1963 bequest from this famous petrologist, after whom the mineral Stillwellite is named, was put to the Stillwell Room, initially the common room in the terraces, and now a meeting room in the main building.

The ground floor of the Stella Langford Wing has the Hewlett, Taylor and Cochrane meeting rooms which can be configured as three, two or one room(s). These rooms were named to acknowledge the generous donations in 2009 from Marjorie Hewlett Atkinson for her great aunt Annie Hewlett, from past Chair of Council, Neil Taylor, and from Life Members Fiona Cochrane and Dr Andrew Cochrane for their parents Professor Donald Cochrane and Margaret Schofield OAM.

William Berry Due to his driving effort to attain the terraces which are now an iconic part of The Graduate Union, the William Berry Wing is named in honour of the founder of our college - the eleventh affiliated to The University of Melbourne.

Phillip Law A major 2011 bequest from this famous Antarctic explorer enabled many building works and was acknowledged with the naming of the Phillip Law Members’ Lounge late 2012.

M V Anderson Naming of the M V Anderson Room, an elegant and comfortable Member-only area, is in recognition of this renowned accountant and philanthropist’s contribution of leadership and significant gifts.

Stella Langford Her generous donation enabled the purchase of three terraces, the street frontages of which remain at the 2010-opened Stella Langford Wing of ten apartments, a multistorey car park and state-ofthe-art meeting facilities.

The wonderful team in the Advancement Office of The University of Melbourne is acknowledged for establishing this conduit as part of the University’s major i-Believe campaign launched in May 2013.

William Berry PostGraduate College Trust

Heather, left, and Barbara celebrate the ten year anniversary as Trustees of the William Berry Post-Graduate College Trust.

Barbara Funder and Heather Kudeviita celebrated ten years as Trustees of The William Berry PostGraduate College Trust. They were appointed in 2004 to administer this Trust named after the founding Secretary-warden, William Berry, also a significant benefactor who was keen to preserve and maintain the historic terraces which formed the first stage of our present day college on the square.

It is still well used by Resident and non-resident Members.

Since the establishment of the trust in 1996, over $100,000 has been donated towards the internal and external refurbishment of the William Berry Wing. The 2013 donation was put towards new doors for the Johnston Library.

Councillor David Sparks and wife Prue visited the United Kingdom in 2013. The following is an account of their experience of a stay in a traditional Cambridge college.

In September 2013, Prue and I were on holiday in London for four weeks, from where we made a few day tourist trips to other destinations; although we stayed for three nights at Cambridge. Graduate House does not have a linkage with a college in Cambridge, never the less with a desire to try a college stay, we located Christ’s College on the internet, which was one of several colleges willing to take tourists for short stays. The reservation process was very similar to making a hotel reservation and did not require any indication of our relationship with Graduate House.

Christ’s college is one of 31 autonomous colleges of the university. The university has 18,000 students and Christ’s College has around 340 rooms. Christ’s College was first established as God’s House in 1437 by William Byngham, a London parish priest, for training grammar school masters. Shortly after receiving its Royal Licence from Henry VI in 1446, God’s House was forced to move from its original site as this was needed for the King’s new project (what was to become King’s College). God’s House moved to its present site in 1448.

Following the death of her third husband, and the accession of her son as King Henry VII, Lady Margaret Beaufort turned her energies to good causes; no doubt at the suggestion of her confessor, Bishop John Fisher. She decided to enlarge God’s House. Then in 1505, with a royal charter from the King, the College was re-founded as Christ’s College. Lady Margaret has been honoured ever since as the Foundress.

The streets in the centre of Cambridge which were laid out in medieval times are narrow by our standards; however the high walls along some of the streets conceal the gardens and majestic buildings of the colleges. This is the case for Christ’s College, but once through the main entrance and past the reception area of the Porter’s lodge, the view opens to the lawns and flower beds of the first court. There are other similar garden spaces to explore, the second court, the third court, the Master’s garden, the Fellow’s garden and Darwin’s garden. The most famous past resident was Charles Darwin, who is prominently recognised in the Darwin Garden.

Each of these gardens is surrounded by buildings such as residences, a chapel, lecture and tutorial buildings, dining halls and administrative areas.

The use of the college for casual accommodation was only possible during the summer vacation period of August, September and early October.

We had booked a room on the third floor of the Upper Hall, from where we could look out over the second court garden. I do not know the age of the Upper Hall, although the adjacent Fellows building was completed in 1645. Our twin room was very spacious and nicely renovated with a very large bathroom. The size of these rooms suggests that they originally had another purpose. The noise from the carpeted wooden stair case when ascending it, suggested that the building has had a long service.

The college only provided breakfast for casual guests, which was provided in one of the dining halls. As the tables were around six metres long we shared the space with other interesting guests who were attending various conferences at the university.

Christ’s college is centrally located and only five minutes walk to more prominent colleges such as Trinity and King’s. Within this distance also is the tourist information centre from where we booked a place in a guided walking tour of the centre of Cambridge. Some of the highlights of this walk were the Cavendish Laboratory, Kings College Chapel and Isaac Newton’s room at Trinity College (from 1662). The tour finished at the Eagle Pub (1667) which is now famous for the second world war air force mementos on display, which reflects the close proximity to the Duxford WW2 air force base, which has a great museum of hundreds of aircraft and other objects.

A visit to Cambridge would not be complete without a gentle guided tour along the Cam river in one of the many punts for hire. A long summer evening viewing the many colleges from the Cam is a memorable experience.

Our Members Heather Wheat and Lindsay doig Heather Wheat and Lindsay Doig have been Life Members since 2007. Both were individually recognised and awarded the prestigious Victorian Seniors’ Achievement Medals at the 31 VSF (Victorian Seniors Festival) in October 2013.

The VSF is a week-long celebration for older Victorians that is held each year and involves state-wide events and activities across all Victorian councils to celebrate and acknowledge the contribution of Victoria’s older people.

The Minister for Health, Hon David Davis MP, presented separate awards to Heather and Lindsay as well as a small group of other recipients as part of the opening event of this year’s Seniors’ Festival. The event was held at Government House and was hosted by the Honourable Marilyn Warren AC at a gathering of around 1,000 guests who represent all sectors of the seniors’ community across Victoria.

Heather and Lindsay both have long histories of volunteering during pre-retirement and postretirement from full-time employment and are both recognised as working full-time for the benefit of the community. Both are currently on the Board of Life Activities Clubs Victoria, one of the State’s key seniors’ organisations, but have fingers in several other pies as well.

Heather was particularly recognised for her contribution to both state and local government policy affecting older people whilst a member of the Ministerial Advisory Council for Senior Victorians, the Port Phillip Older Persons’ Reference Group and the equivalent Committee in the City of Melbourne. Her other important achievements were as a key instigator and driver of the Port Phillip U3A (University of the Third Age) and her work with the Australian Federation of University Women, among others.

Lindsay has been active with Life Activities Clubs for over a decade at the local level and as a Board member. He is currently President of the parent body. He worked with

Heather in establishing and developing the Port Phillip U3A over 10 years and was also a member of the City of Melbourne Seniors’ Network. He chaired CPA (Certified Practising Accountants) Australia’s Third Age Network for more than eight years and has been a Divisional Councillor and Representative Councillor with CPA Australia for a further five years. He has also followed in Heather’s footsteps in that he has just been appointed to the recently revived Ministerial Advisory Committee for Senior Victorians under the current administration.

Lindsay also received another award towards the end of the year: a Lifetime Achievement Award for his volunteer and committee work with CPA Australia, the profession’s highest award available to its members.

Both Heather and Lindsay say that they never realised how full and rewarding their postemployment years would be and they love running away to remote parts of the country in their caravan for a little rest and relaxation when their busy schedule permits.

A former Mayor of Port Philip describes Heather as displaying the modest character of many people who make large contributions and as having established strong foundations in all the community organisations to which she has belonged.

Heather and Lindsay visit Graduate House for lunch regularly and often attend our GU Collegiate functions. They are very active, positive and contributing Members and we are thus very glad to extend our heartfelt congratulations to this deserving couple.

Andrew Harris I grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa. After finishing high school, I moved to Cape Town to complete my undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering. While I was there, I was awarded a bursary with Anglo American which is a large diversified mining company.

After graduating, I left the beautiful beaches and mountains of Cape Town for the much less picturesque mining town of Rustenburg in the North West Province of South Africa. This province is known as the “platinum province” because of the vast platinum ore deposits in the region. I joined the Anglo graduate program as a metallurgist and spent three and a half years gaining experience on many of the Anglo American Platinum processing plants throughout South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Despite gaining wonderful experience, my feet started to itch and I found myself thinking more and more about broader business issues. This drove my interest in obtaining a Masters of Business Administration. In August 2013, I joined the full time MBA (Masters of Business Administration) program at Melbourne Business School which is just next door to The Graduate Union.

The Melbourne Business School and The Graduate Union have been great places for me to meet like-minded people from diverse backgrounds. Staying here has really eased the transition to Australia for me and Melbourne has since become my second home.

I have been trying my best to get out and about whenever possible.

The Melbourne Cup, footie games at the MCG, wine tours to the Mornington Peninsula as well as the Australian Open tennis have all been highlights for me so far.

Jingyuan Shen (Linda) I come from Shanghai, China, the largest city proper in the world by population. It is now the global financial centre with a burgeoning increase in foreign trade. I lived the first nineteen years of my life in Shanghai and then decided to explore new challenges for myself in Melbourne. I completed my bachelor degree in Finance at La Trobe University and received the Dean’s Medal for Academic Excellence, awarded annually to the highest achieving undergraduate in their final year before graduating. I enhanced my proficiency further with post-graduate studies in Management Accounting at The University of Melbourne. During these periods, I had an internship with the Commonwealth Bank as a financial department assistant, a role that gave me the opportunity to consolidate my finance degree and interact with clients to understand the banking system better.

I was also granted another internship in one of the big four accounting companies, Deloitte Australia. In my role there as Audit Assistant, I gained intensive and comprehensive work experience that not only deepened my understanding of accounting but also provided me with insight into different businesses, such as real estate, jewellery and sanitary fittings. In my spare time during the semester, I became an accounting tutor at Reservoir High School. It was a teaching experience that I enjoyed very much, especially mingling with the students.

One of the things that I valued most in Melbourne is the friends I have made here, mainly from The University of Melbourne and from Graduate House. Having social interaction with people from diversified backgrounds has given me a profound understanding of this multicultural society and each person’s unique personality trait has inspired me a lot.

Having recently graduated with a Masters degree in Management Accounting in December 2013, I am now hoping to build my career and a life here in Australia. It is a place attractive enough for me to make an endeavour to embrace it. Last but not least, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the gracious care provided

Fifty years of Physiotherapy graduates On 6th November, 2013, Graduate House hosted a reunion luncheon for more than thirty physiotherapists who graduated fifty years ago. Some attendees came from interstate and there were well-wishers from overseas.

Also in attendance were three members of staff who had taught the physiotherapists as students. They were especially pleased to welcome Cynthia McLoughlin, a former Chief Physiotherapist from The Alfred Hospital to the luncheon. There was great excitement, hilarity and exchanges of information as people relived their experiences as students and shared with one another what they had done since.

In the early 1960s, physiotherapy students in Victoria undertook studies in anatomy, physiology, pathology and psychology at The University of Melbourne. Their physiotherapy theory and practical subjects were completed in the decommissioned wards at Fairfield Hospital and their clinical education took place at The Alfred, Austin, Hampton, Mount Royal, Prince Henry’s, the Royal Children’s, The Royal Melbourne and St. Vincent’s Hospitals. This was also an era The “Fisio” football team when married women were unwelcome and engaged graduates were turned away. Some hospitals were also prejudiced against the male graduates!

Recollections of our successful trouncing of the medical student girls were celebrated. It was of note that about two thirds of those present at the luncheon, although on the edge of their eighth decade, were still involved with work.

After a most enjoyable lunch, all agreed on a repeat performance before too long and very definitely at Graduate House. The reunion was organised by Professor Joan McMeeken AM, Foundation Professor and Head of the School of Physiotherapy at The University of Melbourne, a role that she commenced in 1991. Since 2007 she has been a Professorial Fellow of the University. Colleagues who assisted with the initial organisation included Dawn Best, Alison Smith, Robin Carter and Rosemary Aitken. Many others sought old friends and ensured a delightful reunion.

Our College Duty Residents Tim Stephens I was born in Sydney. I spent most of my early life until teenage years in the City of Albury in New South Wales, before going away to boarding School where I stayed for five years.

I completed my final year of school in 1980 and went on to pursue tertiary studies with completed degrees. I did my Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in History at Monash University in 1990 and in 1994 I completed my Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree at Deakin University. In 2003, I graduated with a BSc degree in Science-Pharmacology with Honours from The University of Melbourne. I furthered my studies again and obtained a Masters degree in Psychiatry from The University of Melbourne in 2008.

My interest is now in nutrition, and I am undertaking postgraduate Master of Nutrition studies at Deakin University in Burwood. Since 1995, I have been spending most of my semester breaks in my hometown in Albury and my major holiday breaks are spent working at the Albury Commercial Club cleaning and visiting relatives and friends in the area.

I came to Graduate House near the beginning of an Undergraduate Science degree in 1997 and have lived here since. I have very much appreciated and enjoyed the experience of the residential college atmosphere. Graduate House is a place where it is difficult to get lonely.

There are students and staff around us all the time. Residents can benefit from conversing with other students from all over the world who have come to live at the College.

I have been a Duty Resident at the College since 2004 and I keep fit with a daily constitutional around the University grounds. I am an ardent football fan and I support Collingwood in the Australian Football League (AFL). This provides an enjoyable and exciting outlet, and a way of interacting with others. I would recommend Graduate House to any student or visiting scholar seeking an enjoyable, interesting and enriching life, and in a very convenient in location.

Louise McLeod I grew up in Brisbane. For some reason I chose to do International Hospitality and Tourism Management as my undergraduate studies, something I received an award for but ultimately didn’t enjoy much. I feel much happier and at home in my current degree, a Masters of Teaching (Primary) at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education (MGSE).

For the decade between my degrees, I lived in Tokyo where I enjoyed combining two of my favourite things, theatre and children. I spent most of those ten years serving on the Board for the longest-running English-language community theatre company in Asia, Tokyo International Players (TIP).

Face-painting at a school fete During my time there, I did acting and directing and crewed on many productions; and cofounded TIP Youth which is a children’s theatre program. I also learnt the art of aerial dancing on silks and lyra, a new direction from my gymnastics days. My signature theatre piece was Oliver, a production which I directed with a large cast of sixty-five cast members. On many occasions, I would intermittently have to shout out in frustration when trying to fit them on stage, like a sufferer of some kind of selective Tourette’s. Thirty of those cast members were under eighteen years old.

This tendency for the melodramatic was cultured in me from an early age, having been involved in several theatre events in my childhood. When growing up, I oscillated between wanting to be a teacher and wanting to be a voice actor in a cartoon movie. While one of these things is unlikely to materialise, I moved on my way to achieving the other.

During my work stint in Japan, I taught English in a variety of settings, ranging from business school to after-school tutoring, kindergartens and nation-wide kids’ clubs. My favourite among these has to be World Family, a kind of “edu-tainment” company, in which I performed in shows and ran camps at a variety of locations around Japan. I would describe my work for World Family as being a cross between The Wiggles and Play School. We would travel around to many places, from big cities to small towns where our club members would gather to see our shows.

These performances were a combination of pantomime, dances and stories, and were always filled with singing. Our members, from infants to early teens, would join us in singing, playing games and yelling ‘he’s behind the tree!’.

So the children theme was strong in my life. It had to have been cultivated at an early age. I have been baby-sitting since I was fourteen and now, interestingly, have a strong grasp of tutoring primary students. I eventually returned to Australia in order to get the qualification I needed to prove that I was meant to be a teacher, and to learn the theory behind the practice by enrolling at Melbourne Graduate School of Education.

In 2013, together with a team of fellow graduate students, we developed a relationship between the Royal Children’s Hospital Education Institute and the MGSE. The three of us in the team were recognised and awarded a Dreamlarge Grant from the University of Melbourne. We successfully assisted in the Jumbunna Film Festival which displayed the talents and courage of young patients in various wards. This was a fabulous kick-off for a relationship that we hope to nurture. As Teacher Candidates, the opportunity to teach in varying educational settings with such different situations and requirements is important, and the opportunity of experiences like these are what it takes to make us adaptable teachers.

On my move to Melbourne, I chose my living arrangements very carefully. On first impression, the draw of Graduate House was largely not having to share with undergrads. Then I realised that it was much more of a community than people studying and keeping to themselves. I have made many friends from various walks of life, and countless acquaintances who, during their very brief stays, have made mealtimes the setting for fascinating conversations. I hope that in my time as Duty Resident, I am able to give back to Graduate House by contributing to the constant improvement that I see happening here. I thank The Graduate Union and its Members for the recognition in being one of the recipients of the M V Anderson award in 2013.

Mattias Bj�rnmalm Mattias Björnmalm hails from Sweden and is undertaking a research doctorate in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at The University of Melbourne with focus on drug delivery, nanotechnology and microfluidics. His research is on the treatment of cancers that are resistant to many drugs, and, in particular, on ‘particle carriers’ that can take a cargo of different therapeutics (drugs) to target such cancers.

With two others, Mattias recently coauthored an article entitled “Particle Carriers for Combating Multidrug-Resistant Cancer”, for the monthly scientific journal, ACS Nano. The above diagram is from this article, published in November 2013. It illustrates how drug resistance can emerge due to ‘drug pumps’ that prevent therapeutics (red stars) from entering cancer cells (top insert) or ‘healing mechanisms’ (yellow spheres) that act to reverse the action of therapeutics (bottom insert). Engineered nanoparticles (top left) can provide ways to circumvent drug-resistance thus potentially enabling treatment of cancers where there are no or very few other options.

Besides playing soccer with other residents at Graduate House, Mattias puts his spare time to good use by doing volunteer work in Emergency First Aid with the Emergency Services of the Australian Red Cross. We thank Mattias for his first hand account in a day’s work with the Red Cross. The events below took place on an evening of Melbourne Midsumma (yes the spelling is correct) festival at the beginning of 2014.

“We have a report of an unconscious woman at the south-east end of the festival, near the market. Over.” ”Roger that, south-east end, near the market. Foot Patrol Two responding. We’ll be there in 2 minutes. Out.” “Thank you.”

We picked up the pace and started moving away from the blaring main stage. It is after 7.00pm and the T-Dance at the Midsumma Festival had been going for more than an hour. The afternoon shift of Red Cross First Aid volunteers was over and my colleague and I have just started work in the evening shift, which has enabled us some time to familiarise ourselves with the event. There were a lot of people, mostly happy and friendly people. By that time of the day, the family-picnic atmosphere during the day of this sunny mid-January Sunday has transformed into a party atmosphere at the same pace that prams with tired kids rolled out of the gates. graduateunionannualreport • 58

As we got to the first marquees of the market area we saw a gathering of people and security personnel towards the end of the line so I pulled out a pair of blue gloves from the leg pocket of my red high-vis uniform trousers. The crowd dispersed as my colleague and I approached the scene. Donning my gloves, I asked the security personnel on duty to help in getting the crowd to take a step back. A woman, no older than twenty-five, was lying on the grass and she was quietly moaning. That is a good sign because any sounds mean there is an open airway and breathing. Her yellow-andwhite dress was getting two new colours as grass and soil dug into the fabric.

“Hello? Hello, can you hear me?”, I knelt down beside her. Her confused and frightened look met me as her eyelids flipped open. Another good sign because she is not unconscious. “What’s your name?”, I asked as I put on a comforting smile. “Jen”. Her eyes locked into mine before they began losing focus again.

“I wasn’t … shouldn’t have” she continued but trailed off. “Hi Jen.” I said as I put my hand just above her elbow in what I hoped to be a comforting gesture. “I’m Mattias and I’m a First Aider with the Red Cross. We’re here to help you.” She focussed her eyes again and seemed to recognise the well-known symbol on the red high-vis uniform. “I’m going to measure your pulse, OK?” I said in a questioning manner as I continued but she seemed to be losing focus again. I then called out to my colleague for help in getting the oxy-kit and I could see she was interviewing Jen’s girlfriend.

“3RC, this is Foot Patrol Two.” “Foot Patrol Two, 3RC, go ahead.”

“3RC, we have a 22 year old inebriated female. Pulse is weak and dropping. Saturation is low and dropping. Requesting ambulance. Over.”

“Full copy. Making call now. Over.”

“Roger that, thanks. Foot Patrol Two, out.”

As the sun continued to descend, the music from the stage a few hundred metres from our position seems to increase. Jen was on her side, cradling the oxygen face mask over her mouth as if it was a fragile gemstone instead of a disposable plastic. She was very reluctant to move it so we had to almost force it to the side during emesis. The pulse oximeter indicated that the saturation was stabilising, but it was still low. “Jen, you’re doing fine”, I said while touching the back of my hand against her forehead and placing the other hand on her back, while checking temperature and hopefully providing some comfort. “The oxygen you are getting is helping and the ambulance will be here very soon”, I continued, noting the flashing red, blue and white box being escorted through the crowd towards our position by a crew member of security.

We told the ambos the latest vital signs while helping to get Jen up into the ambulance. Just with that, the professionals have taken over. I told Jen that she was in excellent care and gave her hand a final squeeze to say good bye. She was barely awake but she squeezed back. I smiled, even though it might have been just a reflex. As the ambos departed, we made notes of the vehicle number plate and the time that we handed over care and then called it in. The security staff accompanied the ambulance and helped guide it to the exit and then we were as alone as one can be at a festival with thousands of people. We picked up the trash that we had spread around us and started filling them into a yellow biohazard bag. The source of the Mattias on duty call beating that filled my ears slowly changed from that of my own heart to that of some undetermined techno from the main stage.

With hands fragrant of extra-sensitive aloe vera alcogel, we finished packing up and made our way back towards the main dance area where the first aid post stood. As the twilight turned into more night than day, glow-sticks started popping up from the crowd.

Almost shy at first, but soon they form a colourful blanket stretching out from the main stage. My colleague suggested that we go into the dancing crowd and act as disco balls with all the reflective patterns on our uniforms. I laughed with her and agreed to her excellent idea. We were in the midst of discussing if we could sneak our response bags back into the main first aid post without being seen as executing our plan when the radio sparked back to life.

“Foot Patrol Two, this is 3RC.” “Patrol Two receiving.”

“Patrol Two, we have a report of a possible anaphylaxis. Behind the main stage. Further details are missing at this point. Over.”

“Copy that. We should be there in two. Patrol Two out.”

“Thanks for that. 3RC out.”

“Looks like the disco will have to wait, we’re invited back stage”, I quipped. My colleague smiled as she rolled her eyes.

Our College Tutors In 2013, The Graduate Union launched The Graduate Union Tutor Program so that others could benefit from the expertise, qualifications, experience and skills of our Resident Members who are from all disciplines, all countries and cultures, and all life stages. This program is unique. Yes, it offers tutorials in college (like other residential colleges) but these are to learners who are based outside the college walls. Some of these learners are similar to those at other colleges - that is, undergraduates enrolled in university courses. However, our out-reach with this program is more broad. This is because we adhere to our founding objects to bring the Life and Thought of the University and of the Community into more direct relation with each other.

The Inaugural GU Tutor Team The Resident Members of the 2013 Tutor Team, shown below, have assisted greatly in establishing and developing this program. They have understood the Association’s purpose of advancing education and have been instrumental in providing opportunities for learning. The Graduate Union is grateful for their commitment to this collegial endeavour. We are confident that the Members and others who read our Melbourne Graduate will acknowledge and appreciate this contribution. We are confident too that our inaugural tutors will have benefited from the challenges of this experience and from the networking and career development support that will ensue.

Zoe Ma offered tutorials to undergraduates in micro, macro and managerial economics, management principles and business strategies; and in basic to advanced Mandarin.

Toralf Burghoff offered tutorials to undergraduate and postgraduate students in mathematics and in the language of German to advanced levels of listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Peng Zhang offered tutorials to undergraduates in electrical engineering; as well as language tutorials in Chinese.

Juan Ceron, continuing as a GU Tutor in 2014, is undertaking his Masters in Energy Systems Engineering and provides tutorials in this field at all levels, from VCE to post-graduate, as well as in Spanish language.

Chanchal Chandramouli, also continuing as a GU Tutor in 2014, offers tutorials to undergraduate and postgraduate students in genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology and cardiac physiology and is proficient in Malay and Tamil.

Graduate Union College Alumni The Graduate Union College Alumni (GUCA) was established in 2013 to bring past residents together .

Resident Records Our college was officially opened in 1962 with seven residential rooms in the newly refurbished Gladstone Terraces. Brian Parker, a master’s candidate from London, was the first official college resident, moving into 228 Leicester Street. Three years later there were 24 rooms and by 1971, there was a total of 54 rooms in the now-named William Berry Wing. In 2005 we gained over 50 rooms through construction of the middle main building and since the opening of the Stella Langford Wing in 2010, we now have 114 college accommodation rooms.

The bar graph above illustrates the number of accommodation rooms for each period, together with the number of past residents that we have on digital record.

Unfortunately, records for residents here before 2008 have not been retained. Further complicating the task is that graduate residents have stays that can vary from one night to several years. Hence there is no direct correlation between the number of rooms and the number of residents each year. In 2013, for example, the ratio of resident to room number was 3.2.

We are very grateful for the volunteer work of Prisci Skaria who is currently updating the digital records for all past residents from 2008 to now, records having been more comprehensive in recent times. Additionally, we are entering the names of past residents who have been recorded in the Melbourne Graduate and in our newsletters.

Much research will be required to gain further information so that we can get in touch.

Why Do We Need GUCA? We often receive visits from past residents, some after just a couple of years postresidence. Others are visiting after some decades and are often accompanied by relatives, friends and past colleagues to show them the college and to see firsthand the expansion and transformation since the early days. Current residents express interest in learning who has been before them, and we here at Graduate House are keen to start up a series of stories from residents of the same room, building or corridor.

Our college alumni are now located around the world. They have the potential to come together to help elevate the standing of the college and our association among the international graduate community. With collective engagement and participation, they can bring advice, service, financial support, new members and ambassadorial representation. They can provide networking and participation opportunities to help with placements, career development, employment and business referrals.

They also share the memories of Graduate House. Being a graduate in a college is much different than being an undergraduate in college, and the graduate-only college experience of Graduate House is reasonably unique world-wide. Graduates are a different age group, have different interests and motivations in their lives and are often relatively isolated in their post-graduate pursuits. GUCA will allow alumni to revisit and reflect upon these times, and to explore how this period in college influenced their ‘graduate pathway’. With involved college alumni, we will be better placed to preserve traditions and our rich college history while planning and preparing for the college’s future.

If you, or anyone you know - such as a parent, friend or colleague - has ever stayed at Graduate House since 1962, whether it was for one night or for many years, please contact us by phone or email, through social media or by sending us a letter. From the ‘contact us’ tab on our website, you may also enter or upload your story on the ‘share your story’ page. For each of these college alumni we are interested in knowing where they are and what they are doing now, and their memories of Graduate House.

With a likely number of >10,000 college alumni, it may take a couple of years to get everyone entered into our database and a few more to find current contact details and to get in touch! Volunteer support from past residents is thus welcomed - it is a job that requires computer and internet skills and the capacity to enter the correct data accurately. It could also be undertaken by a team - some with, and some without, the aforementioned capabilities. We hope also that our alumni across the world will selforganise to establish their own regional GUCA networks and help us with this mission for alumni to stay connected and involved, as well as to join up as members.

Buildings and Facilities

The Graduate Union extends from number 210 Leicester Street in Carlton, just beside the Melbourne Business School, to number 234 on the corner with Grattan Street. It has three wings: • the William Berry Wing of terraces (222-234), with the Johnston Library, the MV Anderson Room, the Resident Members’ kitchen, dining area and games room, the offices of The Graduate Union and 45 residential rooms; • the ‘main building’ (216-220), for which a major donor for naming rights is sought, with 59 residential rooms, the main kitchen, the dining area and Phillip Law Members’ Lounge, our reception foyer and two meeting rooms; and • the Stella Langford Wing (210-214), with ten self-contained apartments, a secure multilevel car park and three ground floor meeting spaces.

Occupancy For 2013, the average occupancy rate was 93.6% as compared to 91.7% in 2012.

As shown in this bar graph, the months from February to November had average occupancy rates of 96.9% and above, with May and October having the highest average rates (99.3% and 99.1%, respectively). January and December average rates were respectively 11.1% and 4.1% greater than in 2012, due primarily to improved marketing to conference organisers and thus a higher number of delegate bookings.

2013 Projects The major projects completed by the Building Services team over 2013 include significant capital improvements to our buildings and facilities. They have been to address our environmental impact, to ensure safety and comfort and to improve the quality of our residential, meeting room and public space facilities. These enhancements mean that we are well-positioned to continue to attract graduates to Graduate House for college accommodation, meeting services and GU Collegiate functions.

Kitchen in the Terraces Since 2005, the kitchen on the ground floor of terraces has been used by our Resident Members, for the preparation of daily lunches and weekend meals, and for food storage. With the large number of Resident Members now in-house, it was imperative to enhance this facility. At the end of 2013, we thus began a much needed refurbishment involving the installation of a new exhaust and stainless steel canopy, two new stove tops and ovens, a commercial dishwasher, stainless steel splash backs, two more sinks, a new hot water unit and a storage and bench preparation areas. Additionally, the kitchen and adjoining preparation room were replastered and painted, and coving at the juncture of the floor and walls was installed.

This major project was completed early 2014 in conjunction with the installation of 58 refrigeration units in the residential rooms of the main building.

Main Kitchen The main kitchen has also seen significant improvements with the installation of a commercial mixer (pictured to the right), new stainless steel bench preparation areas and storage spaces, and a large stainless steel splash back (below) for the dish washing area.

Fire Panel and Warning System For fire safety at Graduate Union, our Brooks Fire Panel was replaced with a state-ofthe-art Notifier Fire Panel and all fire and smoke detectors were replaced to match this new system. The inter-connectivity of detection and warning systems between all three wings was also enhanced to ensure activation of a timely and coordinated response in the event of fire emergencies.

Davey Lofts The generous bequest from Dr T. Ronald A. Davey was put towards urgently required repairs to the roofs of the terraces, now named the Davey Lofts (below left). Over the last few years, repairs and maintenance on the seven roof tops have been intermittent.

With the increasing frequency of leaks with rain, this bequest was thus most timely.

The majority of this work was undertaken late in 2013. It was completed in 2014.

The project involved the replacement of all box (rain) gutters, waterproofing and rerendering. For access and safety reasons, access ladders were also installed (below right) as were eight harness points.

Bicycle Shed and Back Fence Many of our Resident Members own bicycles and though it is reasonably usual for bicycles around universities to go missing when unsecured, a string of thefts of bikes that were well secured at the front of our facility and around the University necessitated a better solution. The fence at the rear of the middle and north end of the terrace wing also needed to be replaced for safety and security reasons. In 2013, a new fence was thus erected and a security gate was installed. Additionally, the Building Services team constructed a shelter bike shed along the north end of the fence. The picture above left shows the new green north end of the fence with the now much used bicycle shelter.

Reverse Cycle Air Conditioners The Phillip Law bequest of approximately $660,000 received 2011 was expended on electrical rewiring of the terraces (2011), the installation of reverse cycle air conditioners in the William Berry Wing (2012) and the 2012 major refurbishment of the ground floor

of the Stella Langford Wing to install toilets, a passageway to the kitchen and storage space. It was decided late in 2012 to allocate the remaining funds for air-conditioners in all residential rooms in the central main building rooms. We are pleased to report that the major installation of 50 reverse-cycle air-conditioners together with key switches (to ensure that the air conditioners are not left on when the room is vacated) was completed on time and below budget in mid February, just in time for the long record heat wave in the last two weeks of February 2013.

Rolling Refurbishment Our facilities vary in age, from over 100 years to four years. Acknowledging the need for a planned and staged approach for ongoing repairs, maintenance and refurbishment, we have thus compiled a seven year program with expenditure allocations distributed to both operational and investing cost lines for budgeting purposes. Over 2013, and in addition to the major projects outlined above, the rolling refurbishment of the 45 terrace residential rooms was completed. As required, this involved re-plastering and repainting, the installation of new furniture, the updating of fittings (lights, shelves, mirrors, etc.), repairs or replacements of the in-room sinks and the replacement of carpet tiles.

Using a carefully budgeted and staged approach over the next few years, this rolling refurbishment will be continued across the entire facility. It will begin with urgently required repairs to the windows and sills of the terraces, as well as the painting of the outside of the terraces and other external building repairs (e.g., to the blinds, walls, etc.). Throughout 2014 and then beyond, the focus will then shift to the residential (58), meeting and public spaces of the main building, followed by all spaces in the Stella Langford Wing. This refurbishment is being undertaken in parallel with ongoing housekeeping, repair, replacement and inspection tasks that are undertaken routinely on a day to day basis, such as the testing and tagging of all electrical equipment brought into the facility, the ongoing replacement of all halogen lighting with energy saving light emitting diodes (LED), the cleaning of all areas, the gardening and the repairs of all things that need thus. These jobs are all carried out without any disruption to our occupants and visitors.

Asset Register In 2013, entry of data into a new asset management system was initiated. Photographs have been taken of all assets, large and small, attached and otherwise. Details about each asset have been incorporated progressively and a system for listing and categorising assets according to type, location or value has been developed, together with a schedule for depreciation and for replacement. This mammoth undertaking will continue over 2014.

Residents’ Group 2013 has also seen the formation of a more consolidated Residents’ Group which consists of the Duty Residents (in 2013, Zoe Ma, Tim Stephens, Melina Glasson and Louise McCleod) and the two Resident Representatives on the Buildings and Facilities committee (Huiting Wang and Jasper Follows). This group met regularly throughout the

year, submitting minutes of their meetings to the Buildings and Facilities committee.

The focus of the Resident Group has been on communication, particularly the communication between residents in-house, the communication between residents and staff, and the communication between residents and Council.

As part of our continuous quality improvement systems, many of the recommendations from the Residents’ Group have been implemented by operations and facilitated by an upgrade to the on-line feedback system to ensure rapid response times to Resident Member needs. This has resulted in improvements to the variety, quality and health of the meals and to the safety, security and comfort of the residents. The Group has been successful in initiating a number of self-organising college groups that began in 2014, such as a soccer group, the table tennis group and the very well-attended Trivia nights. The Group has also contributed to the new Residential Handbook which should be completed in 2014, as well as to improved systems of operations during after hours for welcoming new residents and providing them with a consistent explanation of the college services and operations.

Resident Scholarship and Bursaries The successful recipient of the 2013 Graduate House Research Scholarship was Mr Matthew Li Yuen Fong, who accepted his award trophy and framed certificate at the May annual general meeting, and gave a presentation on his research on reprogramming for cell replacement therapy using Matthew Fong receiving his award stem cell technology to turn skin cells into a nervous from the President of The Graduate system for the digestive tract. For 2014, and to better Union, Major General Professor Jeffrey Rosenfeld AM, OBE. reflect the mix of course work and research students in college, one research scholarship and four bursaries will be offered. Members may like to consider offering support for these awards.

William Berry Wing Working Party The William Berry Working Party has been focusing on the future of the seven terraces known as the William Berry Wing of our college, and as Gladstone Terrace since their construction some time between 1862 and 1900. The members of this Working Party at various stages throughout 2013 were Richard Cameron (Chair), Catherine Tate, John Mantesso, Margaret Robins, David Bottomley and Councillors Andre Cleghorn, David Sparks and Phillip Cobbin.

This Working Party met regularly throughout the year, submitting minutes of their meetings to the Buildings and Facilities committee. It has reviewed the five storey plans that were drawn many years ago, as well as an external architect’s plan to renovate the resident common areas and the staff office areas. The group has also considered refurbishment plans for the entire ground floor to be undertaken in a staged manner according to the availability of sufficient capital. Preliminary plans have been submitted to Council and to the Fund-raising and Benefactions Working Party.

Buildings and Facilities Committee As specified in the newly adopted terms of reference, the general role of the Buildings and Facilities committee is to monitor and review policies and practices relating to the development and management of The Graduate Union’s buildings and facilities.

More specifically, the committee: • oversees the development of a master plan (physical infrastructure) for any future expansion of The Graduate Union’s buildings and facilities; • oversees the development of plans for upgrading specific buildings, parts of buildings or facilities; • reviews the fees, charges and conditions for the use of college residential rooms and facilities and recommends any changes for adoption by the Council; • monitors the implementation of approved capital expenditure; • monitors and ensures timely maintenance of all buildings and facilities; • establishes, reviews and updates operational risk management policies and monitors their application; and • reviews the optimal use of buildings and facilities and recommend to Council any changes thought desirable or necessary.

It has been a productive and busy year for this committee and I thank committee members Robert Heaton (Vice Chair), Cheryl Kidston, Glenda Fisher, Joanne Ligouris, Leo Santalucia, Richard Cameron and Phillip Cobbin for their contributions, expertise and time. I extend gratitude also to the members of the William Berry Working Party, as well as to the Residents’ Group.

A big thank you is given to the staff who continued to work hard all through 2013 to deliver quality services and quality improvements. These include our Operations Manager, our Accommodation Manager, the Building Services team and the Housekeeping team, as well as the staff who undertake secretariat, administrative, contracting and human resource, financial and database management functions.

Towards the conclusion of 2013 we developed a budget and a clear plan of improvements for our Graduate House over 2014. I thus look forward to working with this great team over the coming year and to consulting further with our many Member cohorts about the future of our buildings and facilities.

Systems development The rapid growth of The Graduate Union has warranted better software and systems to manage everyday transactions and activities. With a goal to make our processes easier and integrated, and after having undertaken research to determine that there was nothing appropriate for our particular association on the market, The Graduate Union embarked on an in-house development of this system. This has been undertaken in a planned staged manner, with the release of integrated division modules over 2012 and 2013. All users of this system have had input into its design, and into the progressive improvements and enhancements that have been made to ensure usability and effectiveness.

Development will continue over 2014 to ensure that all of the Association databases are managed through one platform, and to develop web-based modules to enable The Graduate Union to be more internet based for Membership engagement purposes.

Academic and Professional Development Meeting Services The project kick started with a module for the division of Academic and Professional Development Meeting Services (APD). This now comprises capability for bookings, client management, event setup (room to be used, lay-out of the room, catering, human resource requirements, revenue and cost items), invoice management and report generation. This module has enabled us to meet the rapidly increasing demand for our popular meeting

and function services as there is one entry point for information, as well as the capacity to generate many communications and documents automatically (e.g., for running sheets and invoicing).

Membership Management The next phase of development was of a Membership Management module which has gradually replaced the previous application that had been running off MS-Access. The existing data of 9,000+ Member records were migrated to this new primary database, along with the APD module data, without any loss of fidelity. The database was restructured so that additional information fields could be entered, and improvements have been made

to such functions as searching, data entry and management, the recording of Member engagement and purchasing, communication with Members, management of applications for membership, invoice generation, and the generation of documents, labels, etc.

Functionality to export records to Excel based on specific search criteria is now also available.

GU Collegiate The third module to be developed was for GU Collegiate functions. This module provides functionality for events to be created for the calendar year, with performer details and ticket pricing, and all details associated with event bookings by Members and guests (total price, payment method, booking status, contact information, etc.). The data from event registration are linked automatically to Member records enabling improved monitoring and reporting of Member engagement.

Banking and Transactions The ‘Banking/Transaction module’ was the next to be developed. This forms the backbone of all revenue transactions at the Graduate Union on a daily basis. All income and refunds

processed at Graduate house from Resident and non-resident Members, APD Meetings, and the dining room and bar are put through this module. All transactions are then coded for feeding into our bookkeeping system for further processing. They are also mapped to membership records, again to optimise monitoring and reporting of Member engagement.

Quality Control The ‘Quality Control module’ is the latest module to have been released. This enables the entry of the multiple forms of feedback that we receive from our various divisions, the assignment of response plans, where needed, and the monitoring and reporting of actions that have been undertaken.

Staff News 2013 was another busy year at The Graduate Union. We re-opened two weeks after the Christmas and New Year break and the pace picked up very quickly. By March, we were already taking bookings, both in accommodation and for our meeting services, for the end of the year.

With the high occupancy rate in the past twelve months, Accommodation Manager, Diana Bachman (formerly Diana Moyses) had another challenging year in trying to fit in as many requests as possible. The front office is busy at most times of the day, more so in the morning with Residents Members preferring to deal with college matters before going for lectures. Assisting the front desk is Priya Rajoo, who joined the team in November as the new Membership Relations Officer, a position left vacant by Nelly Anala who returned to India in August of 2013. In between membership and reception duties, Priya has also taken over the task of coordinating GU Collegiate functions from Poonam Anala who also left in November to pursue her medical career.

Also seated in the front office is Punam Kunwar who shifts between her duties as Systems Finance Officer which involves all book-keeping, the development and administration of all finance systems and the reporting of income and expenditure from all divisions against budget. She also covers the reception and front office duties when required, as well as coordinating arrangements with our many reciprocal associations around the world.

In her role as Development Manager, Rhonda Lu co-ordinates the development of integrated work and reporting plans for the various divisions. She organises and facilitates all division meetings and assists in the documentation of schedules and procedures. In addition to this facilitation role, Rhonda undertakes secretariat functions for Council and its committees and working parties, and provides much appreciated support to the CEO/Head of College.

Alex Skaria develops and maintains a Windows-based system on .Net technology which consists of division modules, as outlined previously in this Annual Report. He also provides in-house technical and system support for our website, our social media channels and for our information and communication requirements.

The Publications and Social media team of Shirley Ho, Eliah Castiello, Zac Matthews and Jaimy Skaria had another busy year with publication of the new annual calendar, which has been received well by Members, the Monthly Newsletters, the Annual

Report and the Melbourne Graduate periodicals. The team also designed and distributed the flyers for upcoming GU Collegiate functions, and has progressively developed new information booklets (as reported previously) on advertising, Member benefits, fund-raising and meeting services. Jaimy Skaria continues to keep our Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media channels up to date, as well as our website. She also contributes significantly to Jaimy at her graduation all digital forms of marketing through email distribution ceremony with brothers Alex (left) and Justin. lists, on event notification websites and through a variety of university networks. We congratulate Jaimy on having recently graduated from La Trobe University with a Masters in Professional Accounting; and wish Eliah, who is pursuing a Social Sciences degree (Legal and Dispute) at RMIT and Zac, who is undertaking a graphic design course at Swinburne University, well with their studies.

Operations Manager, Daniel Clark, oversees the management of our buildings and facilities, our contracts and our financial systems. 2013 has been a tremendously busy and productive year for the operational teams and we are ever grateful to Daniel for his cheerfulness, professionalism and clever coordination. Sharing an office with Daniel is our wonderful Hospitality Manager, Rosie Ellul, who also enjoyed another busy year with bookings for APD (Academic and Professional Development) meetings. Rosie has been instrumental in supporting the design of the new APD module, in testing and providing suggested amendments and in training other staff in its use.

Function and Guest Services Managers, Bill Mihelakis and Marwa Tantawy, ensure the efficient provision of dining room and bar services, as well as looking after the requirements of seminar/conference facilitators and delegates at Graduate House.

Together with the guest services staff, they re-arrange and move tables, chairs and other equipment frequently on each day to provide our popular ‘flexible configuration’ service (e.g., theatre style, u-shaped for a meeting, dining tables, etc.), while also addressing all catering, dining room and bar needs. We thank them for always providing a welcoming and friendly service.

Sujata Manandhar continues her role in Guest Services on a casual basis and has recently been volunteering her time also to assist in the office. We congratulate Sujata for graduating recently with a Bachelor in Accountancy from Swinburne University. Usually rostered in the evening shift is Aneesh Haridas whom we also congratulate on graduating

with a Masters degree in International Business. Guest Services staff member, Mason Terrett, is pursuing a degree in Geospatial Sciences at RMIT. The Graduate Union is grateful also to Vanessa Bevan, Claudia Trainer, and Prakash Thapa who have helped the team in 2013 as required.

The Culinary Section enjoyed another challenging year in meeting the catering needs of conference attendees and guests using our facilities, as well as providing meals for the Resident Members. Nelson Hu and Basma Tantawy stepped up to lead jointly this Nelson Hu and Basma Tantawy Section following the departure of Kris Reid in October.

Nelson, who specialises in Asian cuisine, prepares the weekday breakfast and earlier daytime catering, while Basma Tantawy, who brings expertise in Middle Eastern cuisine and desserts, covers the remainder of the weekdays, as well as weekend breakfasts and functions. Keith Turney continues as part of the kitchen team and steps in as breakfast chef when required. We say hello to Pieter Schols who has joined the team on a casual basis and wish Mark Woloszyn all the very best with his studies in archeology. We also welcome the newest member of the team, Woody Ti-Jui Wu, who takes care of day shift kitchen duties. Draga Jeftic continues her role with evening shift kitchen duties and plays a big role in looking after Resident Members who need late dinners after having attended evening lectures and meetings.

The Building Services team has had a very busy twelve months looking after the day to day repairs and general maintenance of Graduate House and completing a significant number of refurbishment works, including the newly renovated Residents’ Kitchen, the installation of reverse-cycle air-conditioners, the construction of the new back fence and bicycle shelter, re-tiling of the ground floor main building toilets, and the list goes on. The team comprises Building Services Manager, George Jaksic, together with Ray Stojanovic and Scott Nelson, the latter of whom also fills in to assist with Guest Services and in the kitchen. Scott is pursuing studies in Youth Work at Victoria University where he is a part-time student.

Another major part of maintaining Graduate House is undertaken by the very hardworking and dedicated Housekeeping team. Head Housekeeper, Anne Ladkins, works tirelessly along with Sheila Bevans, Anna Condello and Stana Stojanovic in keeping the residential rooms, toilets and bathrooms clean and tidy. With increased bookings and longer opening hours, we now have Roshan Dhital who works in the evenings and on the weekends. This team are very much appreciated because they get to know our Resident Members, providing much appreciated chats, advice and friendly shoulders.

Finance and Audit Finance and Audit Committee The Finance and Audit Committee supports the Council of The Graduate Union by monitoring and reviewing the policies and practices relating to the sourcing, management, control and auditing of the Association’s finances, as well as the management of financial risk.

More specifically, this committee: • • • • • • • • • • •

monitors the continuing longer term financial viability of the Association; advises Council on protection of The Association’s charitable status; monitors the management of The Association’s trust fund; monitors The Association’s monthly financial reports, identifying any significant variations from budget and directing appropriate corrective action in collaboration with other relevant committees; monitors the management of financial risk, including the adequacy of internal systems of risk identification and risk treatment; establishes, reviews and recommends to Council any changes necessary to The Association’s corporate risk framework; considers the draft annual budget and, following review, recommends it to Council for approval; advises Council on any matter relating to present or future debt; ensures statutory accounts comply with relevant reporting standards; liaises with the external auditor throughout the period of the audit and facilitates finalisation of the Audit Report; and once complete, reviews the annual external audit report, and ensures management responds in a timely way to any recommendations made therein.

Policy Development Initiatives In 2013, as part of an overall governance focus, the Council and all its committees took the opportunity to review their respective terms of reference including inter alia: roles and responsibilities, composition and delegated authorities. We are pleased to report that we have fulfilled our obligations according to the new terms of reference for this committee. In addition to this review work, the Finance and Audit Committee continued to be involved in the development of a series of policy initiatives to enhance further the financial administration and risk management of the Graduate Union; and policies covering Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Security and Acceptable Use, Budget Development and Financial Delegations of Authority were finalised and presented to Council for endorsement.

Financial Performance For the year ending 31st December, 2013, the Graduate Union incurred a small deficit of $2,848 which compares favourably with the underlying loss incurred in 2012 of $55,302. Operating revenue in 2013 (of $3.155 million) was approximately 4.5% higher than that in 2012 (of $3.019 million), with the revenue lines of Accommodation and Catering again being our dominant sources of income. Total operating expenses for the year (of $3.226 million) were also approximately 4.5% higher than those in 2012, with the increases for the expense lines of Employment and Catering being offset somewhat by reductions to professional fees. Capital Reserves (cash and cash equivalents) totalled $1.06 million at the end of 2013, and the Association’s total Property Plant and Equipment were valued in our books at just over $22.635 million.

Capital Expenditure A total of $131,663 was committed and spent on capital works at The Graduate Union, the major projects for the year being: (a) in the main building from 216-220 Leicester Street, installation of air-conditioners in all residential rooms; and re-wiring of the rooms in readiness for the installation of small refrigeration units; (b) in the William Berry Wing, joining of all of the terraces in one corridor on the first floor; preparation for renovation of the Residents’ Kitchen in 2014; and rendering, protection and repair of the eight terrace roofs; and (c) in the court yard area at the rear of the terraces, the building of a secure bicycle shelter and a new fence. With the exception of the roof work which was funded out of a bequest from the estate of Mr Ron Davey, these works were funded primarily from our capital reserves.
