Remembrance Day: Remembering The University of Melbourne Involvement in World War I
Remembrance Day is a sacred day to the allies of Great Britain, commemorating those who fought, and especially those who fell in battle. Australia played an exceptional role in the war, losing 60,000 dead from an overall population of five million. Australia’s universities played a major role in supporting Australia’s war effort. Bob will talk about the specific involvement of Australian universities, in particular University of Melbourne and its connection to Graduate House. He will also reflect on the motivation underpinning universities’ support for Australia’s involvement in WWI with reference to the kind of support that might be expected in any current and future conflicts of interest, whether military or otherwise.
Bob Slater is a Life Member of The Graduate Union. He graduated from Royal Military College Duntroon into the Royal Australian Engineers and served for 23 years in the Australian Regular Army, followed by 17 years in the Army Reserve and 8 years as the Honorary Colonel Commandant, Royal Australian Engineers, Southern Region.
