ABOUT THE GRADUATE UNION The Graduate Union is a residential college and a conference and event centre in Melbourne; as well as a private club for graduates of all Universities across the world.

Affiliated with The University of Melbourne as its eleventh college, The Graduate Union of The University of Melbourne Incorporated is located on the corner of Grattan Street and Leicester Street, Carlton, just south of The University's main Parkville campus and in the vicinity of University Square.

The unique feature of The Graduate Union is a focus on graduates. The 120 residents of Graduate House are post-graduate students (e.g. masters and doctoral) from all over the world; or post-graduate fellows and scholars visiting Melbourne on sabbatical, or as part of an education, research or professional development partnership with a university in Victoria.

Our interest is in providing our Members and their guests with intellectual and social stimulation, by organising and hosting a variety of events. The following pages will outline what we have available and we look forward to seeing you shortly.

OCTOBER LUNCHEON 5.10.2011, reviewed Sister Brigid Arthur noted that while Australia does not have a crisis around asylum seekers, the biggest political issue is centered around boat people. Some melt into the community easily but for the minority who do not, they are placed into detention centers. Many arrive without the correct Visas and are deprived of work rights and benefits while undergoing the lengthy process of their applications and those detained for longer periods are termed “refugees�. As a refugee, they cannot return to their home country, fearing severe prosecution charges. They remain in detention centres under ASIO regulations for security reasons, pending appeal.

Asylum seekers are not victims of people smugglers even if they have made prior arrangements, they are merely survivors of extreme regimes who recognised no other option but take the calculated risk to flee. Even though medical attention is available at detention centres, a large number of detainees are in hospital for serious self-inflicted conditions such as hunger strikes and suicide attempts. Regardless, there must be fundamental human rights that are as important to them as they are to society. Australia does not have a crisis but have created one around human rights.

Wilma has played many theatrical roles, taught Speech and Drama in secondary schools, presented plays and musical productions and latterly has focused on dramatic presentations of historical characters. “Vida Goldstein, that dangerous and persuasive woman” will be honoured in today’s luncheon.

2011 TWILIGHT LECTURE THE GRADUATE UNION presents Topic: LEADERSHIP An address to be delivered by

Laureate Professor Peter Doherty PhD ACFAA FAS

Thursday November 10 6pm for 6.30pm Graduate House 220 Leicester Street, Carlton

Professor Peter Doherty shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1996 with Swiss colleague Rolf Zinkernagel, for their discovery of how the immune system recognises virus-infected cells. He was Australian of the Year in 1997, and has since been commuting between St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis and the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Melbourne. His research is mainly in the area of defence against viruses. He regularly devotes time to delivering public lectures, writing articles for newspapers and magazines and participating in radio discussions.

Peter Doherty graduated from the University of Queensland in Veterinary Science and became a veterinary officer. Moving to Scotland, he received his PhD from the University Of Edinburgh Medical School. He is the first person with a veterinary qualification to win a Nobel Prize.

Peter is also the author of several books, including “A Light History of Hot Air” and “The Beginners Guide to Winning the Nobel Prize”.
