Happy Lunar New Year 2013!

We hope you have enjoyed the world’s fifteen days of celebration from the 10th to the 24th February, 2013.

In Australia, and all around the world, Chinese New Year celebrations included street festivals featuring arts, entertainment and markets showcasing crafts, traditions and food stalls. The vibrant displays of Chinese lanterns, firecrackers and fireworks were prominent. No Lunar Year celebrations is complete without the Lion Dance a traditional dance in which performers mimic a lion’s movements. Operated by two people inside a spectacular lion costume, lion dancers train for many months beforehand and become even more fit through 15 days of dance in our southern hemisphere seasonal heat.

The Lunar New Year dates from 2600 BC, when the Emperor Huang Ti introduced the first cycle of the Chinese zodiac. Because of cyclical lunar dates, the first day of the new year usually falls anywhere between late January and mid-February. On the 2013 western calendar, the Chinese New Year began Sunday, February 10th and is the Year of the Water Snake. If you were born in 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001 or 2013 you are considered to be under this sign.

Like the zodiac signs, Chinese astrology signs are thought to dictate personality traits at the individual level, and to have global impact during the years that they rule. A ‘Snake in the House’ is a good omen as people born in the Year of the Snake are intelligent, wise and great mediators.

We thank the members who came into Graduate House to welcome our new members, many of whom had been in Australia only a few days.

We extend a warm welcome to our new resident members and thank you for speaking with other members about your past, current and future graduate pathways. Professor Katrina McFerran

Depending on Music to Make You Feel Better: Good Idea / Bad Idea?

Dr Katrina McFerran is Associate Professor in the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, and Head of Music Therapy.

After many years of working with young people in hospitals, schools and community programs, Katrina’s research interests have focused on the ways that young people engage with music to ‘feel better’. This has involved challenging assumptions about the power of music to influence people’s mood and behaviour.

Dr McFerran’s research has shown that young people appropriate music in ways that reflect their capacity for health, sometimes resulting in positive change, and at other times reinforcing negative states. She emphasises the importance of intentional and conscious decisions by young people about their musical engagement and highlights risk and protective factors that have been identified in her research.

This is seen to be particularly pertinent in an age where music access is almost unlimited and the potential of music as a preventative health strategy is becoming increasingly interesting to the masses.

Influenza Vaccination Day Thursday, 14th March

Graduate House has again joined forces with the Influenza Specialist Group (ISG), to host a free influenza vaccination day on Thursday, 14th March.

This is a free community service - all members and resident members are welcome to attend,; as are all other graduates. You can even bring a friend. The event will run from 10.00am till 4.00pm.

The day will also be used to launch the ISG’s annual influenza awareness campaign. Graduate House is supporting this important initiative, by providing space to allow advocates for some of the recognised risk groups to provide resources and personnel to answer questions. At this stage, confirmations have been received from Kidney Health Australia, Asthma Foundation Victoria and Diabetes Australia (Victoria).

Influenza Vaccination Day Thursday, 14th March

Meet representatives from the following not-for-profits that support those most vulnerable to influenza Kidney Health Australia are a not-for-profit organisation with focus on improving kidney health outcomes and the quality of life for people with kidney and urinary tract diseases and for their families and carers. They also run initiatives that reduce the incidence of kidney disease in the Australian community.

National Foundation was launched in 1990 in response to the alarming number of deaths from asthma in the 1980s. With a careful and well-designed campaign they have turned the statistics around, with mortality rates now substantially down. They have also contributed significantly to improved self-management, and to improved understanding by carers and health professionals.

Diabetes Australia, established in 1984, is the national peak body bringing a collective voice for people living with diabetes and for their families and carers. Diabetes Australia works in partnership with people who have diabetes, health professionals, educators and researchers to minimise the impact of diabetes. It is committed to making people aware of diabetes, to its prevention, detection and management and to the search for a cure.

BioCSL is providing the vaccine for the day of flu shots. This company is renown worldwide for its production of vaccines for the prevention and treatment of serious disease. They operate one of the world’s largest influenza vaccine manufacturing facilities and supply seasonal influenza vaccines to Australia and global markets.

Bupa Health and Wellness are providing skilled nursing staff to give the flu shots. Bupa Health and Wellness is an international health insurance company with customers in over 190 countries. In Australia, they also provide travel, home, car and life insurance, as well as financial services.

Twilight Lecture

Professor Geoffrey Blainey AC

Writing the History of the World.

Professor Geoffrey Blainey is Australia’s best known living historian. His Short History of The World, an international best-seller, can be read in many languages. Another recent book, A Short History of Christianity, is reported to have topped the best-seller list in South America last year.

His televised history of Australia, The Blainey View, was shown in ten episodes on ABC television in the early 1980s.

Geoffrey Blainey was Professor of Economic History and then of History at The University of Melbourne, and he also held a Chair at Harvard University in the United States of America. He has been Chairman of a variety of national institutions, including the Australia Council for the Arts, the National Council for the Centenary of Federation and the Australia-China Council.

In New York in 1988, along with the celebrated economist Professor J. K. Galbraith, he was awarded the Encyclopedia Britannica’s Gold Medal for Excellence in the Dissemination of Knowledge for the Benefit of Mankind. He is also a well known speaker, and several of his speeches have been republished in books entitled Great Australian Speeches.

Professor Blainey has written thrty-eight full length books, some of which have been published through Melbourne University Press.

The Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC) has donated double passes for Graduate Union members to attend the MTC 2013 program of events. The GU will award these as door prizes at each of our Sunday Music Concerts throughout the year.

For resident and non-resident members who are new to Melbourne, the MTC is part of what makes this city the culture, arts and entertainment capital of the world. Established in 1953, Australia’s oldest theatre company has enriched the lives of its patrons through its contemporary and classical takes on the performing arts.

In addition to twelve productions each year, the MTC provides undergraduate and postgraduate education for the actors and theatre.

Academia: Societal Blues and The Graduate Union “So what is it you do exactly?” Person A asks inquisitively. “I’m in the middle of my PhD” Person B responds delicately. “Fantastic!

And what is it about?” Person A says enthusiastically. “Spectral theory of ordinary and partial linear differential operators on finite intervals” Person B says cautiously, but Person A’s eyes have already glazed over.

There are many other responses when one states their current academic trials to the general public. Some are met with an almost scared “so what does that mean?” Others suddenly find themselves in argument - a nod to those of you writing economic or political pieces.

Many of you have experienced these responses or something similar, maybe even felt dejected by someone’s reaction to your passionate studies. Alas, such are the woes of academia and society integrated. However it does not always have to be so bleak. Many of the world’s greatest minds feel separated from the society they influence. Fortunately for them there is a way to stretch their intellectual bounds.

We welcome you to the Graduate Union catering for and understanding great minds of all ages for over a hundred years.

Park-ing mad: fitness craze in the outdoors Morning walks or afternoon strolls can be relaxing, especially in one of Melbourne’s many parks or gardens. Perhaps you are partial to reading on a welcoming park bench, or lying in the warm summer sun. But what about exercising? In recent years an increasing number of public exercise groups or ‘boot camps’ have discovered the perfect location for getting rid of that Christmas bundle and it’s in your parks.

Jason Byrne, a Senior Lecturer in environmental planning at Griffith University, published an article on whether these ‘boot camps’ are a public nuisance. Byrne delves into the conflict surrounding the fitness craze and how it is regulated. As he reports, ‘boot camps’ are seen as reasonable, brief fitness sessions and park regulations appear to be keeping our parks from being swamped by bopping music and yelling trainers.

Conflict is however arising when other park occupants - maybe those with children, dogs, perhaps even you yourself; compete for that precious space. People organising themselves to get fitter is not such a bad thing and Byrne suggests that simply being in a park improves ones physical activity. With Australia ranked the fifth most obese country in the world by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a few more fitness groups may not be the worst idea.

UNIVERSITY SECTOR NEWS The Digital Future: Dystopia or Utopia?

Philip Riley, a senior lecturer in School Leadership at Monash University has published a paper about the future of Universities around the world entitled University 2060: a brave new world in higher education. Its contents point to the importance of academics being positioned well to deliver tertiary education in accordance with incoming student cohorts who are increasingly intolerant of paper-based material and of being in the same geographical location as their teachers.

These students have grown up in an information technology and communication age and are visibly and knowingly more skilled than their lecturers at finding, sorting through and interpreting data for learning and applied purposes.

We see now huge leaps in online education. Perhaps the most prominent is iTunes U, available to anyone with iTunes on their computer, which is an online community of all major universities, including The University of Melbourne, offering free courses to all.

Though no actual qualifications are granted in completing an iTunes U course - the education material being mainly free public lectures and academic discussions - we have only to look at the press sector to imagine easily - indeed foresee in the near future - free on-line higher education and qualifications and knowledge processing that defines an age.

Life Learning from Philosophy The GU extends congratulations to Life Member Meredith Barnes who has just handed in her PhD thesis on philosophy and ethics – a timely submission given the Guardian Education Supplement’s Tuesday 12th February, 2013 article entitled Dare to be a philosophy graduate – it might just pay off. As suggested by Lucian Hudson, a blogger of life and learning, a philosophy course is transformative. Nothing is fed. Rather the student is forced to explore and challenge the understanding of the way we frame and reframe "reality" and live within this framing. Lucian describes his learning to live more as Einstein’s human of value rather than human of success, treating both success and failure as imposters (Kipling) and making philosophy integral to his interpretation of a civilised existence.

Melbourne School of Continental Philosophy has just completed its annual summer school in the Law Building of our graduate precinct. These ten-hour courses, held during the day or in the evenings, provide enrolees of all ages with the teachings of Descartes, Virilio, Aristotle, Hegel, Camus and Sartre, to name just a few. Australian Geographic Photography Competition

Members enjoy the Anderson Room to read daily newspapers and the periodicals to which we subscribe. Australian Geographic is one of these magazines. Established in 1985, six editions are received here at The Graduate Union each year. The stories are about Australia or Australians.

The journal is well-known for its beautiful nature photographs, rich stories of our history and current times, detailed maps and technical drawings, thorough researching of its stories and excellent writing.

Thank you for your feedback I visit the University Graduates Dining Room about twice or more a week. The customer service is excellent and staff are always helpful. There is a good variety on the Buffet menu and it is excellent value for money. The surroundings are pleasant and the instrumental background music is excellent.

Seen at Graduate House From the Faculty of Arts Cathy Lawrence and her colleagues from the Faculty of Arts come for lunch at the Graduate House bistro regularly.

As Cathy expresses in her testimonial in this newsletter, they enjoy the friendly atmosphere and particularly the roast on Wednesdays.

Visitors from a Reciprocal Club In January, we welcomed Dale Swenson and his daughter Kate who were visiting Melbourne from one of our affiliated associations, The University Club of Saint Paul, Minnesota in America. After having toured the facility, they made a promise to return with the rest of the family to reside for a time in the Stella Langford apartments.

The Stillwell Family We also welcomed Professor John Stillwell and wife Elaine, who came for lunch in January. A Mathematics Professor who spends half the year in Melbourne and half at The University of San Francisco, John is a great nephew of Frank Leslie Stillwell, after whom the Stillwell Room is named and a second cousin of Elisabeth Shaw Wright who gives generously annually for the upkeep of the Stillwell Room.

Rotary Club of Carlton The Rotary Club of Carlton hold their luncheon meeting every Tuesday in the dining room of Graduate House. They have been meeting here for the last three years and at each luncheon listen to a speaker and seek to initiate and grow projects for local and international communities.

Reunion of architects Students from the Faculty of Architecture meet here every year for their annual reunion. This is organised by Life Member David Eyres who always brings a friendly face to The GU. What’s happening in Council?

Since the last Graduate Union Newsletter, the Graduate Union Council (our governing body) has met for the second Council meeting of 2013. Additionally, Councillors have met within their respective committees to consider a variety of issues within the Graduate Union.

For the benefit of new Members within our Association, I would like to briefly outline the Graduate Union governance structure. Foremost there is the Graduate Union Council which consists of a total of 15 members. Council delegates some authority to five standing committees.

These are the Accounting and Audit, Governance and Policy Review, House Board, Membership and Remuneration Committees. Each of these meets six times a year with the exception of the Remuneration Committee which meets twice a year. The Graduate Union Council has seven planned meetings this year to properly coordinate our Association.

It is with pleasure that I also inform you that all financial members of the Graduate Union have access to the minutes of the Graduate Council and that a limited number of members may be observers at meetings of Council with due notice. Please contact the Office for further information.

This governance structure outlined above is being reviewed as we consider our new constitution, as mentioned in the previous newsletter. For further information on the Graduate Union governance structure, or for a list of current Council members, look forward to the release of our Annual Report to be published in April before our Annual General Meeting late May. I am also delighted to welcome our newly co-opted Council member Mrs Vivienne Corcoran.

Vivienne has worked in both corporate and not for profit sectors and has a passion for good governance. Having a broad range of industry experience in business strategy and particularly marketing, The Graduate Union looks forward to her contributions as a Council member.

This appointment restores Council to full strength following the resignation of four councillors after the last election. The four new Councillors - Mrs Vivienne Corcoran, Justice Tony Pagone, Dr Meredith Doig and Mr Keith Ryall - were selected to bring special skills, expertise and other experience to the table. They and three existing councillors will need to be elected by you in the coming election to confirm their position on the Council.

On to Committee news. The House Board met on the 24th of January when the William Berry Wing Redevelopment Working Party was formed. In the short term, this new small group has been asked to look for ways of improving the resident’s kitchen and of increasing office space.

Improvements to the residential kitchen will be focused on providing more sink, bench top, stove, storage and refrigeration space. In the longer term, this Working Party will look at the potential for more significant and major redevelopment in thw wing from 222 to 234 Leicester Street.

The Governance and Policy Review Committee is developing the new constitution and associated documents. Members who are eager to inspect the draft may do so in the months after the Annual General Meeting on Thursday the 30th of May. We have set dates in the second half of the year for member forums where your views on the new constitution will be sought.

The Accounting and Audit Committee met on the 12th of February and is busy overseeing preparation and audit of end of year results for 2012 and monitoring the first month of our organisation’s financial performance against the budget that your Council approved at its last meeting in 2012 for 2013.

Our Membership Committee met on the 13th of February. Amongst various topics discussed was the 2013 Social Calendar where we are making some changes to our existing and successful programs. With our 2013 Twilight lectures – the first being March 27th - we again have renown public figures speaking to our members and this year we are proud to also have small food and beverage providers offering delicious product tastings. For our Sunday Concerts – the first being on the 21st of April with Coco’s Lunch – we are hoping to open all day and offer a range of activities including book and poetry readings, small art exhibitions, etc. We will give you more details of these in the next newsletter.

The flu season begins in the coming weeks and I strongly urge you to take the necessary precautions to avoid this year’s strong influenzas. proud to offer flu vaccination shots again this year. All day on the 14th of March we will be open for members and non-members alike to come in for a shot and to meet also with representatives of Kidney Health Australia, Asthma Foundation Victoria and Diabetes Australia (Victoria). We will also have an Open House on that day so please bring in others to learn about our Association.

I again extend a warm welcome to new and returning resident members. You have come from all over Australia and all over the world and we look forward to your contributions to college life and to our international association of graduates. I wish you all the very best as you settle into college, Melbourne and your academic, research and work schedules. I also wish to extend a special thank you to all those members – both resident and non-resident members – who came together for the very successful Summer BBQ on Friday the 1st of February; and to encourage all non-resident members to come in again to experience meeting and speaking with the ‘best and brightest’ at Meet and Greets and at Special Morning Breakfasts (see the calendar or our website for details).

Release or Not to Release your contact details in copies of the Registrar of Members Every year our Council (governing body) has a renewal process whereby positions on Council become available and members nominate to become part of Council. From the 11th May to the 20th March, members will be submitting their nominations.

If seven nominations are received and all are deemed ‘fit and proper’, members are not invited to vote and the new Council is announced in the publications leading up to the annual general meeting (AGM). However, if more than seven nominations are received, members are called on to vote for their preferred candidates. Voting opens 15th April when we mail out the Voting (Ballot) Materials with short profiles on each candidate, and closes on the 23rd May after which the votes are counted and the results of the election are announced at the AGM on the 30th May. By law, each candidate may obtain a copy of our Register of Members so that they can send you additional campaign material. They may then mail this directly to your postal address.

The Graduate Union is committed to privacy. We have heard and are listening to members who have expressed concerns from past campaigns, and are thus offering you the option to prevent your contact details being released to other members and to authorise The Graduate Union to send you any additional campaign material. If you want this option, please complete the attached leaflet and return it to our offices so that we can update our mail-out database.

The Graduate Union cannot and must not impede the democratic process of elections. If you tick the box above, you will still receive election material if candidates ask us to send their additional campaign material. However, this material will be sent from our offices and candidates will not receive your contact details from The Graduate Union.

Research Scholarship Opening for Applications The Graduate Union Research Scholarship is to provide financial support to a resident member of The Graduate Union who is undertaking a research post-graduate degree (Masters or Doctorate).

Candidate Eligibility This scholarship is open to members of The Graduate Union who are also:

residents of The Graduate Union for a minimum of nine (9) months over 2013;

-

enrolled at a university to undertake a post-graduate research degree, such as a masters or a doctorate degree; and

-

undertaking original research.

Selection Criteria

The Council of The Graduate Union will rank each eligible application according to the following criteria:

Purpose

The funds will be used for a well-described and well-defined specific purpose within the applicant’s research project. Suitable specific purposes include: (a) the purchase or hire of specialised equipment and/or consumables; (b) attendance at a key international conference to present results; (c) payment of research expenses such as travel to field sites or payment to research subjects; and (d) publication or intellectual property costs (e.g. to print final dissertation; to print an article in a journal; to obtain a patent).

Research Stage

The applicant will be in mid to later stages of their research degree. Their research proposal will have been approved by the relevant post-graduate research committee of the university of enrolment, the ethics application (where relevant) will have been approved and the applicant will have commenced and made some progress with their research.

Accountability

Quotes and receipts will/can be provided to demonstrate specific purpose expenditure. Funds will not be expended on general living expenses (accommodation, food, utilities, etc.)

Justification

The funds are needed and are not currently available for the identified specific purpose. Funding of the specific purpose will advance the applicant’s research project: (a) through inclusion of a needed project component; (b) by increasing the degree of innovation of the research; (c) by translating the research for public benefit; and/or (d) through supporting the applicant to complete and publish the dissertation and research outcomes.

Presentation

The submitted application will be professional and with attention to detail.

The applicant will give confidence to Council at interview that they will represent The Graduate Union and the legacy of the scholarship with dignity and honour.
