Corrigendum The story on the Family of Mr Frank Stillwell which appeared in the November Newsletter contained typographical errors regarding the spelling of Mr Stillwell’s relatives, his sister Effie, his niece Etta Jean Shaw and his (great) nieces Jenny Stillwell and Claire Ward for which we apologise most sincerely. Paragraph two should also have read “Generous donation towards the upkeep of the Stillwell Room” rather than “towards the library”.

The University of Melbourne Free Public Lectures Dear Members, Don’t miss the upcoming free events at The University of Melbourne. We suggest that you meet first at The Graduate Union, perhaps to dine, perhaps for coffee. In good company, you could then stroll to campus for the free presentation. Following this feeding of the mind, you might then reconvene at The Graduate Union in the newly named Philip Law Members Lounge for a scholarly social conclusion to your outing.

Bridge Nights on Wednesdays Join the friendly group of Bridge players every Wednesday. Play starts at 7:30pm with a break at 8:30pm for tea and coffee (free for members, $2 for non members). Play is aimed to finish at 10:00pm. From 6.30 to 7.30pm, you may also choose to enjoy a college-style three-course buffet dinner. Cost is $15 for members, $20 for non-members. To avoid disappointment, please book by calling 9347 3428. We welcome new players. A major aim of the group is to introduce players to the game in a way that they can enjoy. There is minimal formality, with numbers ranging from 4 to 10 each week. The emphasis is on learning by playing, with basic instruction given at the table, and maximum opportunity to practice. Bidding using the American Standard System is used, and prompt sheets are available to help players. There is minimal emphasis on scoring - the main focus is bidding and playing. Players with a ‘500’ background adapt very readily. The Graduate Union Bridge Group was established more than eight years ago, and it has introduced a lot of people to bridge, some of whom have gone on to play in clubs registered with the Australian Bridge Federation. Early members included Byron Holdaway, Betty Keay and Peter Dickson – Betty is still an active member of the group. Membership is not restricted to Graduate Union members, although many players join because they enjoy playing and come to love Graduate House. If you would like a social game of bridge, or would like to learn to play rubber bridge, please contact Graham Skewes. Telephone 0408 279 804 or email gdskewes@bigpond.com

WE VALUE YOUR FEEDBACK When you dine at Graduate House please fill in a Dining Room Feedback Form to be in the draw for a

$500 MYER-COLES VOUCHER which is drawn at the end of the year. We also award smaller prizes each month. Our November winner was: Ana Diaz, who won a bottle of Rocco Yarra Valley Blanc de Blancs

News of Publications New releases from Melbourne University Press (MUP) This November, MUP is releasing Maxine McKew’s Tales from the Political Trenches. In this highly-anticipated memoir, Maxine McKew counters the view that Julia Gillard, Australia’s current Prime Minister, was a reluctant Deputy who was forced to move against a chaotic and dysfunctional Kevin Rudd and offers a different version of events. About the author: Maxine McKew is a Vice Chancellor’s Fellow at the University of Melbourne. She also works as an advisor on education to the notfor-profit group Social Ventures Australia, is Chair of Playgroup Australia and a member of the board of Per Capita. At the 2007 federal election Maxine McKew wrote herself into Australian political history as only the second candidate ever to beat a Prime Minister in his own seat. She was immediately elevated to the Executive and served as Parliamentary Secretary for Early Childhood, and later as Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure and Regional Development. Before making the switch to politics, Maxine had a thirty-year career as a broadcast and print journalist. As host of Lateline and part-time anchor of The 7.30 Report she earned a reputation as one of the country’s most authoritative interviewers. Her television reporting has been recognised by her peers with both Logie and Walkley awards for broadcast excellence, while her work for the Bulletin saw her secure the Magazine Publishers Award for Columnist of the Year. A sought-after speaker and facilitator, Maxine is represented by Claxton Communications and is involved in a range of voluntary activities.

Other News

Maxine will be the guest speaker for our 1st May 2013 Monthly Luncheon.

SUNDAY MUSIC CONCERT reviewed Greta Bradman, the young and distinguished soprano delighted the audience on Sunday the 21st of October with a wonderful program of music that had a folk song theme. Greta was accompanied by talented guitarist Ken Murray. Greta began her program with Benjamin Britten’s innovative arrangements of English folk songs Volume 6 for high voice and guitar, which was followed by two American songs, one by Elliott Carter and Aaron Copeland’s moving’ Simple Gifts’. Brazil was represented by Villa-Lobos with his familiar ‘Choro No. 1’ for guitar solo and with probably his best known work ‘Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5’, originally scored for six cellos and solo soprano and later arranged by the composer for soprano and guitar. Greta then sang music from Spain - four of Fernando Sor’s ‘Seguidillas’, poems set to music written about 1800, and concluded the concert with Manuel de Falla’s ‘Seite Canciones Populares Espanolas’, the well loved collection of seven folksongs dating from 1914. Greta’s subtle interpretations with her wonderfully controlled rich voice will long be remembered. We were fortunate to hear her perform such an interesting and varied program and to hear her performing such contrasting styles of music. We enjoyed the afternoon tea which followed, including the company of Greta’s family who joined us. David Eyres, for the music group

BOOK LAUNCH Even Grimmer Tales: Not for the Faint-Hearted by Author Valerie Volk

6th December 2012, Thursday from 6pm onwards

Readings Bookshop, The Brain Centre, University of Melbourne to be launched by Professor Doreen Rosenthal

(Professor Emeritus, Melbourne School of Population Health)

Valerie Volk

When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, on 20th December, 1812, published the first volume of their Kinder-und Hausmärchen, they would not have anticipated that this year we would be celebrating the 200th anniversary of that household institution, Grimms Fairy Tales. That first volume was much criticized as being quite unsuitable for children. In subsequent years many revisions to Grimms classic Fairy Tales have been published. The Tales, valued by W.H.Auden as one of the founding works of Western culture, have endured for two hundred years as part of our literary heritage and have been translated into 160 languages. In her new book, “Even Grimmer Tales” Valerie Volk has put a new spin on the already dark world of the Brothers Grimm, and against the background of twelve well-known stories, explores what the writer in her preamble calls the “caves and crannies of the human mind’ – darker places than even the original story-tellers envisaged. Definitely not for children’s bedtime reading, these stories may leave the reader with a wry smile and a feeling to echo the Epilogue’s closing line:

“There, but for God’s good grace, go I.”

You’ll never again read Grimms fairy tales the same way. For further information, please ontact: Valerie Volk Telephone 08 8376 6665 Email vjvolk@bigpond.net.au David Reiter, IP (Interactive Publications Pty Ltd) Telephone 07 3324 9319 Email reiter@ipoz.biz
