The President’s Message At this halfway point of my three year term, I am delighted to have worked closely with Members, Council and management during this significant period of growth and vibrancy.

This Association has an active, committed and influential membership with global reach. 2016 has seen an increased emphasis on communicating with this international collegium and exploring opportunities that will further our Association's purpose of 'education for social good'.

In tandem with my role as International President of Variety the Children's Charity, I have been meeting with Members in different countries, particularly with past residents of Graduate House. Together we are building capacity for these intelligent and innovative Members to become involved at project management and governance levels for social good ventures. Our Association's goal is not only to provide these 'plug-in' opportunities for graduates, but also for established teams of graduates in each region to welcome and offer similar opportunities for those seeking to live, work and study in their regions. I invite all Members to assist us with this endeavour by providing access to, and footholds within, their local networks, wherever they may be in the world, from outback Australia to the centre of our world's largest metropolises.

Following my letter of invitation in late 2015, I was pleased to confer Honorary Membership to over 30 Ambassadors to Australia from other countries and from Australia to other countries, and five members of the High Court of Australia, including the Chief Justice. Many of these Members of high office bearing have expressed interest in contributing to our Association. We are continuing to explore means by which each may become engaged productively with the activities of the Association here and overseas.

I am proud of this Association's demonstrable commitment to the provision of opportunities and facilities for graduates. It is an honour to work with a dedicated, contributing and active membership, as well as with the strategic, hard-working governance team on Council, its subcommittees, expert roundtables and working parties. Members can rest assured that the Association is in the good hands of the outstanding management team and staff at Graduate House, and making sound progress towards its vision and mission through the implementation of well-designed, realistically ambitious short to medium and longer term plans. In this second half of my term, I thus continue to welcome the contribution and sound counsel of all Members.

The Chair of Council’s Message Our College was built on a vision of a place where graduates could meet, learn and live. This year we celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the purchase of the Gladstone Terrace in 1957. As we pause to reflect on the vision of our founders, we build on the opportunities of the present, and plan for the future to welcome a new generation of graduates to our International Collegium.

I am pleased to report that 2016 has been a successful year of growth, progress and building the vision. We have produced an increased surplus for the year. By growing the operating surplus we provide funds to improve facilities and reduce existing loans.

Our collegiate master plan provides a basis for meeting the future needs and aspirations of members and graduate students. There is a high demand for safe, convenient and supportive collegiate experiences with over 20,000 graduates now enrolled at The University of Melbourne.

Graduate student accommodation has been increased by 10% through the acquisition of thirteen apartments comprising level 7 of 50 Barry Street.

A planning application has been lodged with Melbourne City Council for the development of Gladstone Terrace, the details of which are in the Buildings and Facilities subcommittee report in this issue. We responded to the proposed construction of the Melbourne Metro Rail Parkville Station and two underground rail tunnels under Grattan Street. We have also continued to communicate with Melbourne City Council about redevelopment of University Square.

Strengthening the culture of philanthropy of our Association continues to be a priority.

Improved systems and resources supported a second very successful annual appeal.

Our Graduate House (Bequest) Society was launched in 2016. Sadly, our beloved Barbara Funder passed away in September of 2016. Her generous bequest will establish the Barbara Funder Lounge at 222 Leicester Street. The legacy of Barbara will also be honoured through our trusteeship of the newly named William Berry and Barbara Funder Postgraduate College Trust.

I thank Council and Members for their work, commitment and support to the Graduate Union during the year. I also thank our CEO/Head of College, Dr Kerry Bennett, and our dedicated staff for providing welcoming experiences for all the members and graduates, who live, learn and meet at Graduate House. I look forward to working further with Members to honour the vision and build the future of our Association as we promote education for the good of society.

The CEO/Head of College’s Message I present to Members our Annual Report for the year 1st January to 31st December, 2016.

Financial results The Financial Report for the year ended 31st December, 2016 shows an operating surplus and an increasingly strong asset position.

The results continue to be underpinned by sound performance in our long-standing operational divisions - membership, residential accommodation and meeting and function services – as well as asset growth through the acquisition of 13 new apartments in Barry Street, and the submission of a planning application for a major redevelopment behind the terraces.

Strategic achievements and planning 2016 signalled the release of the 2016-2018 Strategic Plan and a commitment to continued growth in vibrancy, membership and network engagement, facilities and influence.

1. Innovative, influential membership Our membership of all disciplines, life stages and ethnicities responded well to our second major survey, providing us with guidance that will enable us both to honour our legacy, whilst establishing sound approaches for current and future graduates. Graduate House is the place and Graduate Union the network in which graduates increasingly want and need to be. We have a robust system of business development from idea generation, value proposition and feasibility analysis, to implementation and evaluation. We understand, communicate with and meet the markets for membership, accommodation and meeting services.

Average college occupancy was 94.80%, up slightly from 2015 (94.21%) with March to November showing average rates of 97.75%. The Graduate House Student Group continues Graduate Student Association membership, has a strong constitution and many ongoing activities, and works constantly on succession to ensure its continuance and relevancy. There were 1,000 meeting and function services bookings by 239 convenors in the not-for-profit, professional development and education sectors, and 23,429 delegates - an 8.87% increase on 2015. Our membership numbers have increased and participation rates in our GU Collegiate programs continue to be high.

2. Benefaction We have a systematic, strategic and ‘best-practice’ approach to raising major funds through bequests, donations and other endowment sources. Through improved resourcing and training we have made progress in developing the policies and procedures for managing gifts and communicating our gratitude to those who give to our Association. We are strengthening our networks in the corporate and philanthropic sectors, and gaining sound counsel from the members of our Fundraising and Benefactions working party, as well as from our innovative Resident Members. graduateunionannualreport • 6

3. Planned and achieved major projects A roundtable of experts developed the concepts for our three-stage ten-year G-House master plan, and the Stage 1 planning application lodged with Melbourne City Council for the redevelopment behind the terraces. The Association has met regularly with Melbourne Metro Rail Authority on the Parkville Station, presenting also to the Minister for Planning's Inquiry Advisory Committee on the Environmental Effects Statement and the proposed Planning Scheme Amendment. Meetings with Melbourne City Council continue in relation to Reimagining University Square, where Leicester Street is soon to become a one-way tree-lined lane.

A second roundtable of experts has developed the framework for a ten-year G-Union Master Plan, and overseen the significant progress made in thence scoping, specifying and programming the web-based system to support the proposed directions and activities under this Plan. Our facilities have been improved through the refurbishment of the residential terrace rooms and the installation of a new reception desk.

4. Well-managed finances and mitigated risk We have transparent and accountable financial controls, policy development/reviews and sound risk mitigation and management strategies. The 2015 restructure of our borrowings continues to reap benefits by enabling amortisation and investing activities, primarily to maintain the quality of our facilities, as well as improvements in our borrowing capacity for further acquisitions. We manage a budget that allows for current operations, capital expenditure and development initiatives to meet current and future graduate markets.

5. Effective responsive stewardship We continue to identify, develop and implement our communication and engagement strategy with key local, national and international stakeholders, and are grateful for the strong support from our membership for this purpose. Sound and productive relationships are being established with like-minded groups working towards education for social good, such as Variety the Children's Charity, Graduate Women International and Rotary International, as well as with college alumni groups around the world.

Our Council has members with governance skills and relevant experience, and is demonstrating outcomes in strategic planning, innovation and the implementation of feasible value propositions. We are applying continuous quality controls to ensure the Association meets the needs of Members, and have a hybrid communications and feedback system (hard-copy, online, mobile) to ensure that all segments of our membership are heard should they so voice.

I thank my Graduate House colleagues who provide a friendly, productive and inspiring working environment. I am grateful to our President and to the many governance contributors on our Council, subcommittees, roundtables and working parties. Thank you again Members for being active in ensuring that education and social good are front and centre in what we do and how we are seen.

2016 Council Member Attendance Your Council works hard to sustain and grow our Association. Many of your Council Members, including the President, attend Graduate House for meetings weekly, contributing much more than indicated in the schedule of governance meetings from the 1st January to 31st December, 2016, shown in the table below.

Governance and Nominations Governance and Nominations Subcommittee As set out in regulation 29.2, the general role of the Governance and Nominations subcommittee is to support the Council of The Graduate Union by establishing excellence in governance practice, formulating and reviewing policies and practices relating to the effectiveness of Council and of Council subcommittees, and Council succession planning.

More specifically, the subcommittee is to: • oversee Council’s compliance with its governance obligations established by external regulatory authorities; • determine, review and recommend improvements to governance policies; • review and recommend changes to the structure and functioning of Council and of Council subcommittees for effective governance; • facilitate the understanding by Council Members of their governance role and responsibilities; • safeguard the process for annual updating of the strategic plan; • research and recommend improvements to the proceedings of Council in relation to meetings, written resolutions of Council Members, Council Members’ interests and minutes and registers; • ensure reviews of the terms of reference for each subcommittee at least once every two years; • ensure reviews of the performance of each subcommittee at least once each year; • ensure Council Members are provided with information about professional development opportunities; • monitor adherence to Regulation 1 Council Governance Standards; and • establish and pursue a procedure for identifying and securing suitable future candidates for election or co-option to Council.

Governance Standards Council and Council Members are required to adhere to the governance standards prescribed under the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 (Vic) and the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012 (Cth). The Governance and Nominations subcommittee monitors and makes policies to ensure adherence to these standards as provided in Regulation 1 under the headings of: (a) purposes and not-for-profit nature of the Association; (b) accountability to Members; (c) compliance with Australian laws; (d) suitability of Officers; (e) duties of Officers; and (f) governance values, ethics and behaviours of the Association.

Rules and Regulations Members will recall that new Rules were adopted in 2014 to be in accordance with the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 (Vic).

In 2015, adopted amendments to these Rules were to provide for elected Council Members to have a maximum tenure of three consecutive terms on Council (rule 54.3). Due consideration

was given also to the paramount importance of Members being able to participate and vote at General Meetings of Members. The Governance and Nominations subcommittee was thence tasked to review the rules relating to the use of technology at General Meetings and to consider the inclusion of provisions for voting by postal ballot for Special Resolutions which deal with major issues and for which a high Member voting participation rate is desired.

From this review, the subcommittee developed amendments that were put and adopted as Special Resolutions at the 26th May, 2016 annual General Meeting.

One amendment was to rule 38.1 Use of Technology. The provision for the use of technology to attend and participate in General Meetings had been introduced in 2014, but the recent proposal from Council was to replace ‘… may be permitted’ (in the then current rules) with ‘… may, if permitted by Council to do so, elect’. The consequences of this allow Council to decide in advance of a General Meeting, whether it would be appropriate for Members to participate through the use of technology. Such a decision would be based on an assessment of whether the technology to be used would be affordable, reliable and allow for simultaneous communication.

Amendments were made to rule 43 Special Resolutions to provide for Members to vote by postal ballot for Special Resolutions which deal with major issues and for which a high Member voting participation rate is desired. This change addressed concerns raised in 2015 regarding rule 42.2, which prevents a Member from voting by proxy at a General Meeting. Provision for decisions to be made at General Meetings by a show of hands remained, as did the provision for a poll (vote in writing at the meeting) to be called for by three Members. Additionally, a provision was introduced to give the Secretary of the Association discretion as to whether to send ballot papers to all Members or invite applications for ballot papers.

The revision of the Association’s Regulations since Council adopted consequential amendments in December, 2014 also continues. The focus of this review has been on how and when officers (Chairs and Vice-Chairs) are appointed to each subcommittee, the roles and responsibilities of each subcommittee, reminders to Members on the proposal of motions for General Meetings, the timing by which and the form in which those motions need to be proposed, and the consequential amendments required should further amendments to the Rules be approved.

Composition of Council With an abundance of gratitude, tinged with sadness, the Members at the May 2016 annual General Meeting (AGM) bade farewell to Mr David Sparks as a member of Council.

Mr Sparks has been on Council since May 2007 having joined as a Member of the Association in 2005. He is an electrical engineer - having graduated from The University of New South Wales - a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia, and a Member of CIGRE, an international electrical engineering society.

Since 2007, Mr Sparks has been Chair of the (then named) House Board and, later, of the now-named Buildings and Facilities subcommittee, a member of all of the other subcommittees of Council and ViceChair of Council before being elected to the position of Chair of Council, remaining in that position until 2013. He was also responsible for establishing the Fundraising and Benefactions working party and thus in guiding the Association to its current success in initiating and implementing a broad range of important advancement activities.

At the AGM, the President, Dr Ken V Loughnan AO, acknowledged that Mr Sparks had worked tirelessly and selflessly for the good of the Association, providing long and dedicated service.

Because Mr Sparks and his wife Prue were travelling in Europe and the United States at the time of the Association’s AGM, the prestigious Outstanding Service Award was presented to Mr Sparks by the President at the Chair’s Cocktail Party in December.

We are fortunate to have David’s continuing input to our Association through his membership of the Buildings and Facilities subcommittee and the G-House Master Planning roundtable of experts.

The Rules provide for up to three appointments to Council. Through this process, Council appointed Mrs Faith Fitzgerald to Council for a one-year term commencing December 2015 and we are pleased to advise that this appointment has been renewed for a second one-year term until December 2017. Cr Fitzgerald brings particular governance expertise in education, government, strategy, public policy and business. As Secretary to the John Cain Foundation, we are grateful to Cr Fitzgerald also for convening the monthly lunches of this not-for-profit ‘think tank for social democracy’ at Graduate House. Members will recall that John Cain was the President of our Association for six years (2005-2011). It is thus an honour to be the host venue for these lectures and discussions on economic, social and environmental public administration and policy issues of importance to Australia’s future.

Council is pleased to have appointed Viv Nguyen for a one-year term commencing April 2016. Cr Nguyen brings significant corporate, community and board experience in governance, business frameworks, financial, risk and project management, leadership, advocacy, and communications with multiple stakeholders and in complex environments.

Holding a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Master of Applied Finance degree, both from The University of Melbourne, Cr Nguyen has undertaken also the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) course.

Cr Nguyen has been a non-executive director with City West Water, the Grampians Water Corporation and Western Health; and a Commissioner for the Victorian Multicultural Commission and the Queen Victoria Women’s Trust. She has initiated the Dual Identity Leadership program for young Australians of Vietnamese background with funding from the Scanlon Foundation.

As a business leader with over twenty years of experience, Cr Nguyen has built a B2B (Business to Business) financial planning business from $50 million to $1.4 billion prior to acquisition, and held executive positions as Head of Risk for Margin Lending, Chief of Staff to the Chief Risk Officer and Head of Diversity at ANZ. Working now as the Business Practice Manager at Melbourne City Mission, Cr Nguyen has worked as a strategy consultant for the Suncorp Group, completed a strategic review of the Bennelong Group’s wealth management strategy, extended her networks with Oppeus Executive Search and was part of the Project Management Office on the change and risk management program at Guild Insurance.

A third appointment is Mr Paul Southwick who joined Council in September 2016, also for a one-year term.

Cr Southwick has a Bachelor of Management Studies (Finance and Human Resources) from the University of Waikato, a Graduate Diploma of Marketing Management from UNITEC, a Diploma of Freelance Journalism from the Morris Journalism Academy and a Certificate of Advanced Competitive Strategy from the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität München.

He is a Graduate of the Auckland University Executive Health Management Program, as well as a licensed private pilot.

Cr Paul Southwick

He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, the Institute of Company Secretaries, the Governance Institute, the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

Cr Southwick brings significant experience as a business consultant and company director across the private, charity and not-for-profit sectors. He is Chair of the Board and Co-Founder of the charity Hope in Jesus, and a Director of the German Lutheran Church and the Deutsche Schule Melbourne. Widely published internationally on business, aviation and culture (see www.psfj.co), Cr Southwick lists his specialties as ‘creativity, counter conventional thinking, and clear, differentiated and appealing communications’.

In conclusion, I thank the 2016 Governance and Nominations subcommittee members Cr John Green (Co-Vice-Chair), Mr Ben Green (Co-Vice-Chair from June), Cr Phillip Cobbin, Cr Faith Fitzgerald, Dr Brendan Grabau, Cr Vincent Mirabelli (from June), Cr Leo Santalucia, Cr David Sparks (to May) and Cr Rhys Watson - as well as the secretariat and administration staff at Graduate House.

Personal Statements from Candidates ASTHANA, Molina BCom(Delhi), LLB(Delhi), LLM (Commercial Law)(Melb) Proposer – Margaret Mayers Seconder – David Wilson I am a Principal Solicitor at the Victorian Government Solicitor’s Office and have over 15 years’ experience in mergers, acquisitions, banking, finance, and corporate and commercial contracting. I have worked at top tier Australian firms, Minter Ellison and Clayton Utz and in India, at the Supreme Court, the highest court in India, and as an inhouse counsel for a top 100 company.

My memberships and professional associations include the Law Institute of Victoria, the Bar Council of Delhi and the Supreme Court of India Bar Association.

I am committed to education, community contributions and mentoring, and am on the boards of the Law Institute of Victoria, the International Law Association and the Asian Australian Lawyers Association. I have received numerous awards including the Victorian Multicultural Award for Excellence for Service Delivery: Community Service 2014.

I am also a Commissioner on the AFL South East Commission and a Cricket Australia Ambassador.

PAGONE, Gaetano (Tony) LLB(Monash), DipEd(Monash), BA(Monash), Master of Laws(Cambridge) Proposer – Parisa Shiran Seconder – Vincent Mirabelli I am a Federal Court of Australia judge and was a Supreme Court of Victoria judge. As a barrister, I practiced in taxation law, in commercial, constitutional, public and human rights law.

I am committed to education and professional development.

I am a Professorial Fellow with Melbourne Law School teaching in the post graduate law program. I have held academic positions at Monash and Melbourne Universities and was Chairman of the Victorian State Education Committee of the Taxation Institute.

I am committed to community and professional involvement, and am a Vice President of the International Association of Judges, on the Board of the International Association of Tax Judges and on the Luke Batty Foundation Board. I was Secretary and Vice President of Liberty Victoria, President of Co.As.It (an Italian community welfare non-profit association; 2006-2010), on the ACSO Board (Chairman 2002-2007) and a member of Melbourne Girls Grammar School Council (2003-2007).

This has enabled significant achievements ensuring our Association is vibrant, growing and relevant.

We have achieved reduced interest costs, increased surpluses and improved facilities. We have established a Bequest Society, Endowment Fund and increased College accommodation by 10%. Strategic alliances are developing with Rotary, Variety International and the Kelvin Club where members can access city facilities.

My vision is to maintain sound financial management, expand College and Member facilities to meet growing demand and build membership to ensure we remain the premier Post Graduate College.

In that time I have been Vice Chair of Council (2012-13), member of Finance and Audit (chair 2012-13), Buildings and Facilities, Governance and Nominations and Remuneration committees.

Major advancements are in train and a number of challenges are before us. Expansion of our residential base with the purchase in Barry Street is the first stage in that process.

The planned redevelopment behind the terraces promises to transform the college as it seeks to respond to the continuing demand for residential places from graduate students. The Metropolitan Rail works will present major challenges over the coming years but will be of inestimable value to the college once it is complete.

I am keen to contribute in a meaningful way as we work towards the realisation of the dream that underpins these developments.

*GREEN, John BEc(Tas), LLB(Deakin) Proposer – Kingsley Davis Seconder – Rhys Watson I am a Life Member of The Graduate Union and have been actively involved in its affairs as a current member of Council, Vice-Chairman of the Governance and Nominations subcommittee and member of the Finance and Audit subcommittee.

I have more than 25 years’ experience as a senior university administrator, including six years as the Deputy University Secretary at The University of Melbourne. I have degrees in Law and Commerce and Fellowship membership of the Australian Institute of Governance, Certified Practising Accountants and Institute of Company Directors.

If re-elected, I would be keen to continue to contribute to the Council’s engagement with the graduate community and ensuring that our global international collegium have a rich and rewarding experience at Graduate House.

Rules and Regulations

The Graduate Union of The University of Melbourne Incorporated (The Graduate Union) is an incorporated Association under the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012. Elections to the governing body (Council) of our Association are to be in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the Association, which are accessible from the website under the About Us tab.

The Rules of the Association set out our purposes as a charity and not-for-profit organisation and outline the rights and responsibilities of Members and office holders.

The Regulations are established by Council to provide further guidance for the governance and management of the Association.

Membership and Marketing Membership and Marketing Subcommittee As set out in regulation 30.2, the general role of the Membership and Marketing subcommittee is to oversee the maintenance and growth of the Association’s membership, and the development and promotion of new or improved programs or services. More specifically, the subcommittee is to: • advise Council on the development of new or improved services or programs that strengthen The Association’s offerings to Resident Members, non-resident Members and the general public; • advise Council on marketing and communications strategies to increase Member numbers and Member participation; • review the fees, charges and conditions for membership and recommend any changes for adoption by Council; • monitor Member satisfaction with the Association’s services and facilities; • oversee the management of significant awards to, and recognitions of, Members and staff; • oversee advancement initiatives such as benefaction, sponsorship and fundraising; • review and recommend to Council any updates to policies relating to the conduct of Members; and • review membership applications in accordance with the Association’s membership policy.

Membership As at 31st December, 2016, The Graduate Union had 2,083 Members as compared to 2,033 by the end of 2015.

The increase in the number of Life Members reflects both those who have joined under this membership division as well as those in high office who responded to our invitation to join our Association. We now have as Members, distinguished Ambassadors who are here in Australia representing their different countries and Ambassadors elsewhere in the world representing Australia overseas, as well as judges of the High Court of Australia. Sadly, some of our Life Members who contributed for decades to our Association, died in 2016. We will honour their legacies and we thank them for their generous bequests. They are deeply missed.

Reflecting the trend for shorter terms of residency, particularly by postgraduate students enrolled in coursework degrees (e.g., professional doctorates, and masters degrees or diplomas by coursework), the number of Resident Members in 2016 (597) was 128 more than that in 2015. With increasing numbers of in-career aged delegates visiting Graduate House for professional development courses and to participate in other education and social enterprise activities, the number of Daily Members (291) showed an increase of 153 from 2015.

The number of Members in other divisions has remained relatively stable, with a slight decrease in Regular (non-resident, including Associate) and Organisation Member numbers. Not shown in these graphs are the number of college alumni (GUCA) whose records are being gradually entered onto our database, both as they leave residency and through our continued scouring of the Association's publications since 1962 when the residential college opened its doors.

The number of new Members admitted each month of 2015 and 2016

A total of 408 new Members was admitted in 2016 (256 in 2015). The above chart shows the numbers who joined each month. Reflecting both new Resident and Daily Members, particularly for the months from February to November, 2016 demonstrated 21 to 54 new Members per month as compared to 6 to 30 per month in 2015, the latter year having been characterised by a higher number of residents staying for longer periods. Reassuringly, occupancy averaged 94.80% as compared to 94.21% in 2015.

The bar graph below shows the total number of new Members per membership division. Whilst this demonstrates a continued and increasing interest in the Association, the Membership and Marketing subcommittee has identified the need to continue resourcing and adopting new approaches to recruit and retain new Members, as well as to deliver suitable service offerings.

Member Survey The first Graduate Union survey was undertaken in May 2013. The second was opened from 8th March to 27th May, 2016 and was sent to Members (in the post, or through email links) to obtain feedback and to compare results with those obtained three years earlier. The response rate from the membership was good, with Members from all segments (non-resident, Resident, organisations) and of a wide range of demographics, responding. The results are thus felt to be sufficiently valid and reliable for the purposes both of informing continued quality improvements to current operations and new directions.

Member satisfaction is high Members value the “caring, secure, collegiate, intellectually stimulating environment” of Graduate House - describing it as great “to live, meet and socialise” - as well as the opportunities to interact with a “diverse and vibrant intellectual community” of people of “multidisciplinary backgrounds from around the globe.”

The Net Promotor Score – determined from responses to “How likely are you to recommend the Association to a friend or colleague?” - improved by 17 points compared to 2013, with 70% of Members giving scores of 7-10 (out of 10), 76% feeling proud to be a Member, and 74% indicating that they feel that they are treated as a valued Member and that the achievements of Members are recognised and celebrated.

Accommodation and our meeting place are core strengths The offering of an accommodation facility close to The University of Melbourne continues to be one of the core strengths of the Association with 88% of residents rating the quality of the residential college (at Graduate House) as good or excellent and 94% likely to recommend Graduate House residency to others. We are very grateful for this strong endorsement and reputational enhancement.

Past Resident

Residency also remains the main driver of new membership. 75% of residents say that they will continue, or had continued, as Members after leaving college. The main reason for not continuing post-residency was identified as geographical – e.g., relocation to another part of the world. This result identifies the need to highlight more clearly the advantages of continuing involvement in this international collegium, and to strengthen the influence and reach of this network, particularly to gain footholds - be these career, social or volunteering – for graduates where next our college alumni go.

Members access many of the Graduate House spaces and catering facilities for small meetings, small to medium sized seminars, professional development events, working and social lunches and dinners. These services and facilities, as well as GU Collegiate forums hosted and organised by the Association, continue as core Association strengths, with 89% of Members indicating that they were good or excellent. In particular, it was noted that GU Collegiate forums gave opportunities to meet and connect with other Members, had high quality speakers and were good value for money. graduateunionannualreport • 20

Members seek inclusion and to contribute Questions were introduced in the 2016 survey to explore more recently adopted strategic directions, particularly those identified under the key 2016-2018 priority of an Innovative Influential Network. The results suggest that the Association is heading in the right direction to address Member (and potential member) needs, as well as gaps in its service offerings.

Reflective of a membership that is from all parts of the world - particularly those who are residing, or who have resided, at Graduate House – as well as the Association’s commitment to the 17 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, 65% of Members indicated that they felt part of a global, multi-disciplinary network that values diversity and inclusion, with 69% expressing the view that the Association made graduates feel included and welcome, and part of a community that promotes and values lifelong learning.

In continuing our commitment to social good – that is, our purpose of education for the benefit of the community – the Association is developing opportunities for Members to contribute through advocacy, innovation, support and team-building around the world.

Support for the delivery of social good is high. However, only 43% felt that they could contribute something worthwhile, with particularly our older Members pointing to capacity constraints. Contribution via innovation which has widespread social good application, as well as participation in the development of graduate teams around the world for social good, were the most selected ways in which Members would like to contribute. The 2016-2018 Strategic Plan is thus appropriate in placing greater emphasis on the enabling of such contributions through, for example, building sustained relationships with internationally influential not-forprofits to provide ‘plug-in’ project team and governance opportunities for our Members.

The finding that some Members are not feeling that they are making a worthwhile contribution points to a need for the Association to identify how each and every Member can be assisted in realising and understanding their worth to our Association. Some Members who are no longer in careers are a very valuable source of advice for earlier career Members. ‘Graduate pathway’ stories from our more experienced Members are often very inspiring to – indeed, needed by - those seeking careers and career re-entry/transition (e.g., after having children, caring for a relative, or a period of unemployment), particularly in the current highly competitive and rapidly changing employment environment. Similarly, the experiences of our earlier career graduates in this highly technological and borderless communication era are fascinating learning opportunities for those who are seeking to ‘keep up’!

In response to the survey question “In what capacity would you like to be involved?” one Member expressed “In any way that is contributory. I believe I have much to offer - and no wish to impose”. The Association must thus encourage imposition!

Lifelong learning and career development are key To determine how the Association could best achieve the aims of encouraging lifelong learning and helping Members to develop their careers, the survey included questions for career-aged graduates on the importance of career development, advice and support services.

As might be expected, this Member cohort placed importance on all career development and advice services, noting career entry, re-entry and transition support (79%), as well as tutoring, coaching and mentoring for and by graduates (74%). A further 70% believed that advice for entry to postgraduate coursework and research enrolment is also important.

Lower percentages indicating that membership provides access to quality professional networks and opportunities (57.5%) suggests that the 2016-2018 Strategic Plan is on the right track in seeking to increase its reach and influence to support graduates in gaining, retaining and progressing successfully through careers. The Association is thus strengthening its service offerings for graduates to meet employers, network within their professions and participate in career roundtables.

Stewardship, communication and responsivity Overall, 82% of Members rated the Association’s communications as good or excellent, an improvement of 8% since 2013, and the results support continued use of the Association’s ‘hybrid’ media approach – that is, both ‘hard copy in the post’ and digital. This reflects our commitment to a membership that is inclusive both of those who use technology infrequently and those who are mobile and social media natives.

Requests for email communications have doubled (from 26% to 58%) over the last three years, assisting greatly in our attempts to keep printing and posting expenses, as well as our carbon footprint, down while costs go up. Accessing information from the Association’s website, which is also mobile device friendly, has increased ten-fold, as has the use of social media, as would be anticipated from each new generational wave of Members.

The Association is seen as increasingly responsive, timely and appropriate to feedback. It is seen as well managed (82% - up 9% on 2013) and governed (79% - up 13%), and as meeting the challenge of balancing market segmentation and finding common ground. This need is expressed well by one Member in response to the survey question on how the Association might improve its value to members - “By recognising that there is a wealth of different values in its membership segments and that simply by facilitating transfer of value between the various segments the value in each segment will increase. We have much to offer each other!

The Graduate Union can be the hub that facilitates the transfer of value between our many segments.”

Website Throughout 2016, the website saw major developments that continue to harness the possibilities of the digital environment, particularly through a focus on generating Graduate Union branded digital content to create and grow an online presence for the Association.

The year saw the launch of SDGFocus, Professor Profiles and its spinoffs (Poet Profiles), Bright Sparks - The Graduate Union Podcast - Graduate Pathway stories (Member and non-member), organisation profiles, culture pieces and other short and long-form pieces.

The creation of this type of content, which is also repurposed from the newsletter, is ultimately a membership exercise, as is explained below.

Website statistics As shown in the chart below, the January 2016 launched website has boosted views and unique visitors, due mainly to the inclusion of online forms, improved content and active links allowing for user interaction. The most frequently visited pages include those for accommodation, events, membership and individual blog posts. Referring traffic is mostly organic from Google, social media and third party sites linking to the site. It is therefore key to continue sharing content through social media outlets to ensure maximum exposure.

Professor Profiles Established in 2016, Professor Profiles seeks out Professors within The Graduate Union membership to share their academic and personal journeys. The series has featured a wide variety of fields from psychology to linguistics, mathematics and civil engineering.

SDGFocus Established in early 2016, our SDGFocus series continues to demonstrate the Association’s commitment to promote actively the Sustainable Development Goals. The aim of the series is to gain ideas and stories from individuals and groups who are addressing one or more SDG through their activities. Some early features included Embrace Education which provides education for the disadvantaged, to grass-roots student run groups tackling issues like divestment.

Sharing these issues with The Graduate Union membership and general audience helps to promote the social good contributions of the membership and also generates traffic for the website. Through increasing traffic to the website, which in part is also helped by healthy

Google rankings due to an effective Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) setup, the way is paved for creating a strong position for the Association online, increasing awareness to relevant demographics to accept the new waves of Members in the coming years.

This is also facilitated by an on-line membership application form which makes it easier and quicker for new members to sign up from wherever they may be in the world.

The new blog is another medium for sharing stories from non-members and potential members as a means to encourage membership and to foster strong ties with potential members. Stories written are then shared by subjects on and via their own social media sites – personal or professional – further increasing exposure for the Association. Stories have come from diverse sources such as Ned Barakat, a journalist who covered the LA riots, to Karen Stephens, Director of the National Student Leadership Forum.

Bright Sparks – The Graduate Union Podcast The Bright Sparks Podcast was established in 2016 to expand further in to the digital environment in order to share stories of human interest. Two podcasts have been produced so far, including the inaugural episode with the President of The Graduate Union, Dr Ken V Loughnan AO who talks about his upbringing and pathway towards the social good work he is involved with today, and orthodontist Dr Ted Crawford who launched the Give a Smile program which facilitates pro bono orthodontic work for those who are unable to afford it. Our podcasts are available on our website, and also on the iTunes store.

Social Media As touched on earlier, social media is key to driving engagement with the website and the Graduate Union brand. Our social media channels continue to be Facebook, which is the most

active site in terms of engagement, Twitter, which is key for virality, Linkedin, Google+ and YouTube, the most viewed site. Each channel plays a specific role in terms of the information that is shared through that particular channel. In the coming years it will be imperative to focus also on video to disseminate through the social media channels.

The statistics from 2016 demonstrate healthy growth of the channels. Together with the growth of digital content from The Graduate Union website, these numbers will continue to grow, acting as another method with which to expose The Graduate Union brand and generate interest in membership and relationships with the Association.

Meeting Services

50th Year Reunion of the 1966 Melbourne Teachers College intake

Indigenous Research Protocol with the Clean Air and Urban Landscapes (CAUL) and Monash Sustainability Institute (MSI).

2016 has been another successful and busy year at Graduate House with a total of 1,004 bookings. These include small and large meetings and private functions. A total of 239 convenors booked with us and their events were attended by 23,429 attendees - an 8.87% increase on last year. These figures are exclusive of GU Collegiate events, governance meetings and individuals/groups frequenting the dining room and bar at Graduate House.

The organisations range from alumni groups, schools, research units and faculties from various universities, to groups from the charitable and not-for-profit sectors and government departments at state and federal levels.

We are grateful to the many organisations that use our facility regularly. The 50th Year Reunion of the 1966 intake of the Melbourne Teachers College held a lunch event on 12th February, organised by Paul Bianco and Peter Powe, with 97 guests in attendance.

The Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand (HSANZ) Nurses' Group Victoria held a formal dinner at Graduate House in March with 75 guests.

Several events were held on weekends. On Sunday, 1st May, a celebratory formal lunch was held in honour of Member Dr Tom Beer for his receipt of the 2016 University of Sydney Alumni Award for International Achievement.

Another regular patron is Social Education Victoria which hosted 145 delegates at their March event.

The Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER) held their 2016 Annual General Meeting at Graduate House, which included an award recognition ceremony where Tertiary awards, Specialist awards, and a Member Recognition Ceremony for ACHPER Victorian Branch Honour Awards were given.

The Rotary Club of Carlton has been convening events at Graduate House for many years. These events include Heritage Clusters, lunch and dinner meetings, and the recent Rotary District 9800 Foundation Grants Seminar, which attracted 120 attendees, for Club Presidents, Foundation and International Chairs and Members interested in developing a Rotary Foundation District or Global Grant project. Bookings from Carlton Rotary attract about 250 attendees a month.

The Professional Historians Association (Vic) held their two day 'Working History Conference for Professional Historians' in August with 206 delegates focusing on the challenges, triumphs, failures and lessons learned through working as professional historians. Also in August, the Victorian Ethics Network 'Ethical Review and the Digital Age' seminar attracted 90 attendees.

The John Cain Foundation Annual Lecture and Annual General Meeting in November was attended by 120 guests for a meeting and cocktail party. The John Cain Foundation also holds monthly luncheons at Graduate House. These feature expert speakers on a variety of topics and are a convivial way for progressive thinkers to meet to discuss issues of importance in Victoria.

Australian Asian Association of Victoria's Language Award Night

The Australian Asian Association (AAA) held the Asian Language Award Ceremony in October with guest speaker Jackie Watts, Councillor of the City of Melbourne, who presented on STEAM - adding Arts to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Organisations affiliated with The University of Melbourne that booked with us in 2016 included the Department of Infrastructure Engineering at The University of Melbourne, the Melbourne Brain Centre (Australia China Training Initiative of Neurology) for five days in November, the Bachelor of Medical Science's end of year Christmas BBQ and the Melbourne School of Philosophy which held a dinner event here. The Melbourne Medical School with 103 guests, held a cocktail party in October for the Victorian showcase of Educational Research in the Health Professions.

An outstanding day was Friday, 2nd December, which saw all Graduate House staff hands on deck for a VicHealth University of Melbourne full day delegate conference with 150 attendees, as well as a delegation from the Centre for Health Policy, and another from The Australian School of Applied Management.

This was followed by The Graduate Union Chair’s Cocktail Party on 2nd December, with 190 attendees, and the Western Clinical School 2016 Graduation ceremony with 200 guests the next afternoon on Saturday, 3rd December.

GU Collegiate GU Collegiate events have been convened since 1911 to foster intellectual stimulation for a diverse (multi-age, multi-cultural, multi-discipline) audience. Our events for 2016 adhered to this tradition.

The Monthly Luncheons commenced in February, with speakers throughout the year including psychologist Dean Phelan, aircraft engineer Ron Gretton AM OAM, journalist Paul Southwick and criminal lawyer Arthur Bolkas, as well as historian and author Dr Ross McMullin, and more (see the following pages for further elaboration).

For the GU Tastings and Twilight Lectures of 2016 we were very proud to partner with the Rotary Club of Carlton and to have 'Health, Happiness and Wellbeing' as the series theme. We again welcomed our regional food and wine producers to showcase their excellent wares to the Melbourne-based and international attending audience.

The College Tables, introduced in 2014, also continued throughout 2016. The sessions were well attended, and provoked stimulating discussion from a wide range of facilitators including Professor Christian Jakob from the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment at Monash University, Dr Christoph Breidbach from the Department of Computing and Information Systems at The University of Melbourne, Senior Digital Strategist Gaby Silver, Professor Jane Davidson from the Faculty of The Victorian College of the Arts and Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, and many more.

The table opposite shows attendance rates according to membership division throughout the year for some of these events. It does not list the regular self-organising groups: Bridge Night (1x per week, 20-40 people), Friday Drinks and Dinner (1x per month, 20-30), Italian Conversation Dinner (1x per fortnight; 8-12) and the Women’s Forum (1x month; 6-20). Similarly, it does not list the Resident Member events which now include research talks, welcome tables, cultural and special occasion events and excursions.

For 2016, there were approximately 130 GU Collegiate functions. For the 24 tabled opposite, the total attendance number was 1,425 for the year - 271 Life Subscriber Members, 549 Regular and Associate Members, 341 Resident Members and 264 non-members. The average attendance was 59 (range 6-300).

Culinary Section and the Bar Exclusive of the catering provided for academic and professional development meeting services and GU Collegiate outlined in the previous sections (for ~25,000 delegates), the total number of meals prepared in 2016 was, again, over 72,000, an average of just under 200 per day.

Resident Member meals (seven breakfasts and five meals each week) comprise up to 94% of these meals, the remaining meals being for a regular clientele of non-resident Members, nonmembers and Loyalty Card holders seen often at Graduate House for lunches, morning and afternoon teas, pre-dinner cocktails and dinners.

Remissionalising the Church - a six year case study in large organisational changes

When Dean Phelan, CEO of Churches of Christ, first entered the organisation, he felt it timely to tell a different story about the church, God and about the Churches of Christ. Dean spoke about his role in bringing back the mission of the organisation and rebuilding confidence within the Church. The organisation now operates with one leadership team and one coherent strategy. Dean spoke about the initiatives he had introduced, such as a Listening and Connect tour, a holistic view of the Church and the establishment of Action Plan Leadership groups in other regions, as well as his plans for creating a new future in three phases for Churches of Christ.

Project 2014 - Bristol Boxkite for the RAAF Museum

Boxkite was originally developed in Filton, Bristol in 1910 by the now defunct British and Colonial Aeroplane Company.

In 2006, Ron Gretton and his colleague Jeff Matthews began construction to replicate aviation history. Ron Gretton's Bristol Boxkite took its maiden voyage on the 2nd of March, 2014 at 7:40AM, one hundred years after the original maiden voyage in Australia. The reason for designing and building a Boxkite was simple - to pay homage to and commemorate a true centenary celebration of military flying in Australia.

6th April Joanna Fletcher

Family violence: a new approach or same same but different?

CEO of the Women's Legal Service of Victoria, Joanna Fletcher raised the question: Are we really seeing a new approach to family violence, or is it the same but different? With the Royal Commission into Family Violence in Victoria established in 2015, Fletcher relayed seeing only a few really new boundarypushing ideas for Victoria. She pointed to the importance of the Commission having recommended setting up an independent family violence agency with a role in holding the government to account and in ensuring that recommendations are carried out within an expected time frame with the capacity to survive government reforms.

New challenges - old wisdom in organisational evolution

Before becoming a journalist, Paul had a successful executive career which saw him climb the corporate ladder to Chief Financial Officer. He became a lifetime 'observationalist' when investigating the intriguing history of his father's time as an aircraft pilot in World War II. Paul spoke about his career path, his family history and how the past can shape a better future.

We heard about the many articles he had written, from the differences between business in Australia and New Zealand, to customer service in business and the advantages of small businesses over larger corporates. The articles contained a common thread - that old wisdoms can assist with new challenges.

1st June Dr Judith Paphazy

Resilience, an essential ingredient in 21st century living

Psychologist Dr Judith Paphazy's work focuses on resilience and whether this is inborn or learnt. She continues the research of her mentor and dear friend, Edith Grotberg, who was a researcher with the International Resilience Project in The Netherlands. Judith's talk was based on Grotberg's model for developing resilience in adolescents. Each category (I Have, I Am, I Can) comprises features from which a child can build resilience. 'I Have' are external supports that allow one's 'I Am' - one's internal personal strengths to develop so that 'I Can', social, interpersonal and problem solving skills, can become active.

How is digital dexterity changing marketing?

Stepping in at the last minute to speak when unforeseen events led to the scheduled speaker not being able to attend, Dr Bennett wove concepts of anatomical digital dexterity - the ability of humans to fully oppose the forefinger and the thumb, and use tools - to current day usage of the term 'digital dexterity' Digital Dexterity in the constantly evolving and expanding online marketing environment. The internet has changed advertising, consumer behaviour and financial models, necessitating nimble, dextrous and savvy approaches to maintain and grow user/client engagement according to generational market segments which have widely differing digital usage patterns.

2016 Monthly Luncheons 7th September Arthur Bolkas

Imprisonment - a professional and personal perspective

Arthur Bolkas, in his own words, has the dubious distinction of being an 'ex' - an ex prisoner, an ex drug addict - as well as, first and foremost, a human being. At the luncheon, Arthur told us his story, from a world of crime and drugs to his transformation when he found God. He questions Australia's policies and the youth justice system, which he felt should do more to rehabilitate offenders. Now a consultant criminologist and freelance writer and speaker, Arthur has featured in the general media on prison reform and youth issues. He is an advocate of early intervention and preventive measures, restorative practices, and a whole-of-community response towards offenders.

5th October Kay Dunkley

Supporting the health and well-being of health professionals

Doctors, nurses and other health workers need better mental health support as the suicide rate among health professionals is at an alarmingly high rate and of major concern. Kay's talk was about her work with the Australian Medical Association's Victoria Peer Support Service, which provides peer support to doctors, by doctors. The service offers a point of first contact and a listening ear to those requiring ongoing assistance. The Peer Visitor Program aims to keep older doctors connected to their former profession by facilitating links with visiting volunteer visitors who are also medical practitioners.

11th November Dr Ross McMullin Pompey Elliott

Historian and biographer Dr Ross McMullin talked about his book, Pompey Elliott. The main objectives of the book were to tell the untold story of Major General Harold Edward (Pompey) Elliott's remarkable life, and to use the book as a vehicle for telling the bigger collective story of how World War I devastated Australia. It was an excellent platform to tell the national story. McMullin suggested that there were three key factors that earned Pompey his reputation as a respectable Commander. Pompey was capable, he was a fierce fighter and his men had great faith in his leadership. He had courage, he was a brave soldier who was Australia's most famous fighting general. The third factor was character - Pompey was a man of resolute character, his harsh exterior necessary, as anything softer would not push through the perilous nature of war.

2016 Graduate pathway Twilight Lecture 25th February Charles Kovess

Passion Provocateur

Charles Kovess began his journey in law and graduated with an LLB, Honours and later a Masters. He has been President of the Hungary-Australia Chamber of Commerce, and for the last three and a half years has been working to industrialise hemp. But in 1993, things changed. Known as Australasia’s 'passion provocateur', Charles B Kovess, once a tax lawyer, began seeing things from another perspective. “There are some interesting thoughts that I want to share with you – some provocative thoughts, after all, I am Australasia’s 'passion provocateur'. I deliberately want to be provocative in an alleged institution of learning,” he said.

2016 Graduate House Career Roundtables 3rd and 17th March Agnes Banyasz Director and Career Strategist, CorpReach

2016 saw the launch of the Career Roundtables facilitated by career strategist and mentor, Agnes Banyasz. Catering to those on all points of the work spectrum, the Roundtables focussed on general advice towards achieving career aspirations, from application to interview stages.

The sessions focussed on equipping participants with the knowledge of how better to present themselves in a very competitive job market.

Women’s Forum Female graduates come together at Graduate House on the third Wednesday of each month to discuss current affairs and contemporary society. Each session of the Women’s Forum is ninety minutes in duration and the discussion often continues over a dining room lunch. Below are some of the notes from each of the Women's Forums over 2016.

17th February Understanding the ageing process - in ourselves and in others All

living things will have experience with the changes of ageing. In humans, this process is individual and different, depending on the experiences and attitudes developed during a life. Changes differ between those experiencing the ageing process and those observing it.

16th March What enhances our being? Whatever situation one is in, a positive frame

of mind is important, especially if one's own ability is used to benefit another who is worse off. A manageable state of health and access to sufficient financial resources are always good to have. We will benefit by keeping an open mind and being alert to the incidental things in life that are uplifting. Music is an example of a great source of enrichment.

20th April Has handwriting reached the full stop? The general feeling is that while the

use of personal handwriting is declining, it did reflect feelings and personality in a way that is rarely possible from a typed document. For those who mourn the declining use of handwriting, a positive thought is that if it does finally disappear, it may return one day as a 'craft' to be learnt like woodwork or crochet.

18th May Suicide is catching Why does suicide as an exit from a seemingly unending

or insoluble situation occur? Unless a suicide note is left behind, most of us can only conjecture as to the reason why. It could be revenge, a cry for help or an extremely distressed person not thinking rationally. These reasons do not account for the ideological action of suicide bombers who believe their own death will bring rewards to which they aspire in the afterlife, promised by their religious beliefs.

15th June What is a good friend? A good friend brings out the best in oneself. True

friendship is rare and takes time to develop. People are cautious. One cannot be friends with people one fears, and people who abuse the trust and generosity of a friendship will bring the 'good' relationship to an end. Real friendship demands respect and sensitivity. Some friendships can come from unexpected places - one's hairdresser, cleaner, etc.

13th July The value of conversation Conversation is an art or verbal ballet. Timing is

important in a conversation, letting others speak and getting a turn. Active listening is imperative, which means you are engaged in a discussion both in physical and verbal cues. People who can converse with anyone, anytime are always welcoming and approachable. They know the art of a good conversation and have a genuine interest in the other person. graduateunionannualreport • 38

Women’s Forum 19th August Too many people die alone Death and

loneliness were discussed, the latter much associated with personality or personal circumstances. Lonely seniors are at greater risk of mental and physical decline and die faster than their social counterparts. Some people die 'alone' but are not lonely. If you have friends but not family around you when you die, it is considered dying alone. The mantra, 'You can't be happy unless you have people around you', is just not true. Being alone is sometimes by choice.

21st September Life Is an interesting journey One can start by reflecting on one's own

life; for example, how close is your life to how you envisaged it to be during childhood years, university and career life? As one grows, life opens up new fields of interest and possibilities. One is also capable of adjusting to new circumstances. Life's journey can turn out quite differently, because other people are significant influences.

19th October The past is our present Often, little thought is given when making

decisions that affect future generations. Any situation is of value if one has the power to exercise the choices to direct the future - for example, how the Middle East was organised, or the crushing of Germany's power after World War I. Another example is the rise of buffet style meals and fast food outlets and their links to the current obesity problem in Australia.

16th November The significance of the five senses All healthy people will, without

thought, use all five senses many times every day. Those born with all five senses in working order and who later lose one sense (e.g., sight) tend to rely heavily on memory and can describe something reasonably accurately based on these previous experiences. New technology, like hearing aids and eye drops, can restore the loss of hearing or divination of sight. The sense of taste can be underrated - primitive man and animals now, relied (rely) heavily on their sense of taste to avoid foods that can harm them.

19th December End-of-year session to share laughter

A coming together for a good laugh and some reminiscing.

The Women’s Forum is free of charge and for women of any age, life stage and ethnicity. It is usually convened in the Anderson Room at Graduate House.

Fundraising and Benefactions Working Party The Fundraising and Benefactions (FaB) Working Party was established in 2013 by the then Chair of Council, Mr David Sparks, to define and implement a systematic, strategic and best-practice approach to raising major funds through bequests, fundraising, donations, sponsorship, grants and other endowment sources.

Advancement is the modern-day term used to describe the integration of this fundraising approach with processes that we have naturally embedded over the last 106 years, including member relations and services, communications and marketing. Hence the reports and advice/recommendations from this working party are through the Membership and Marketing subcommittee to and from Council.

Each year since establishment, the advancement functions of our Association that are focused on fundraising and benefaction have been strengthened because of the dedicated commitment of the volunteers on this working party, who, over 2016, included Cr Rhys Watson (Chair of Council), Ms Nanette Gibson, Mrs Elfrida and Mr Zoltan Kiss, Mr Fausto Marasco and Mr Wal Reid.

With the launch of our second three-year Strategic Plan early in 2016, ‘Benefaction’ was identified as a strategic priority and four key result areas (KRAs - that is, what we will have achieved by the end of 2018) were defined. Much progress has been made against each of these KRAs. With respect to the first - Council is driving advancement and the engagement of influential networks with the Association - Council Members (and indeed many other similarly generous Members of this Association) are speaking on our behalf and marketing our (now many) fundraising and benefaction opportunities through each of their professional and personal networks. Coupled with our hosting of a number of welcoming events, we have thus been able both to introduce new graduates and new networks to our membership, as well as to our ‘culture of philanthropy’. This is having a ‘ripple-on’ effect with more and more people finding out about and, of course, willingly coming on board (as Members, benefactors, contributors, etc.) and with passion to support our purposes of education for social good.

Progress has been made also on the second KRA - Major funds have been secured from bequests, donations and other endowment sources. We are gradually building operational capacity and the budget to cultivate giving programs, strengthening our human resources by appointing an Advancement Officer, initially in 2016 for just two days a week and since the beginning of 2017 in a full time role. We have developed (and Council has adopted) a Major Donor Strategy and progress reports against each of the key result areas in that strategy are provided regularly in a variety of different governance and membership forums. Our ‘client relationship management’ database platform continues to be developed for best practice advancement management.

We have developed and launched successful giving opportunities and been very transparent in our administration of all gifts received under each program. For example, 100% of the funds received from our first annual appeal in 2015 has been expended on furniture in the refurbished terrace wing rooms – that is, just for the shelving, beds, wardrobes, desks and chairs. Similarly, with the equally successful 2016 annual appeal, all donations have been put wholly into our endowment reserves in support of research and coursework postgraduate students, and we are confident now of being able to fund the next and future rounds of research scholarships and bursaries because of this much needed injection.

2017 marks 60 years since the Gladstone Terraces, from 222 to 234 Leicester Street, were acquired. As reported elsewhere in this publication, the Association has submitted a planning application for a major development to the rear of these terraces. In 2016, we thus began working on a comprehensive and strategic plan for our Diamond Jubilee Capital Fundraising Campaign, which we hope to launch in the second half of 2017. In the meantime, we invite all Members to commence reaching out to their networks to garner support for this initiative and to communicate their ideas for raising significant and sufficient funds.

Since sending to all Members our Graduate House Society booklet early in 2016, and then launching this bequest society officially at the Founders and Benefactors day on the 21st August, we have been humbled by those who have come forward to say that they are providing for us in their wills. Awkward as this often feels, it has enabled us to have good conversations about why they are so kindly giving to us and how we can ensure recognition of their generosity in perpetuity. The reasons for giving are many but the common threads include wanting both to say thank you for the opportunities provided by tertiary education and to pass that benefit to another generation of graduates. All major bequests received to date have gone to much needed capital works. For example, the generosity of Mr Ron Davey enabled urgently required repairs to the leaking roof of the terraces. These are now named the Davey Lofts – a recognition that will continue following the major redevelopment. Similarly, the generous bequest from Dr Phillip Law has enabled the installation of reverse cycle air conditioners in all rooms, a muchneed toilet block on the ground floor of the south (Stella Langford) wing and the purchasing of small in-room refrigeration units. The western end of the ground floor of the central wing is now known as the Phillip Law Members’ Lounge. Our beloved Barbara Funder provided also for us in her will and we are thus naming the foyer in front of the now closed reception desk (at 222 Leicester Street) the Barbara Funder Lounge, adding her name also to the Postgraduate College Trust established from the bequest of the late William Berry, the inaugural warden of this residential college.

The third KRA - G-House and G-Union major projects are ‘ready-to-go’ – saw great progress in 2016. For both of these ten-year master plan components, a roundtable of experts was formed and met regularly. Quantity surveyor estimates on the construction and business interruption costs for the first stage of the G-House master plan have been used to determine what each level of donation will pay for in this building, and how donations will be recognised. One strategy for major donations put to a component of the building (e.g., a residential room, the ground floor café, the two floors of basement gym) is to acknowledge this donation in years to come by directing a small percentage of the revenue eventually received from use of these spaces to named and specific-purpose endowment funds (as well as, of course, the named space). For the donor, the joy and satisfaction in giving is not just for this important capital project but in having their name put to endowments that will support postgraduates forever.

A similar approach to the G-Union program, developed by another roundtable of experts, is enabling us to identify segments of our ‘interact’ website of potential lead donor interest (e.g., to support employment or coaching/mentoring of graduates).

In 2017 we are launching our crowd-funding site, the development of which occurred in 2015 and 2016 thanks to the generous support of Mr Fausto Marasco, a long-standing member of the Fundraising and Benefactions working party. We are thus well on the way to meeting the fourth KRA - The crowd funding site generates support for education and innovation. Soon we shall be inviting Members to spread the word about this Fund Life Long Learning site and the potential for graduates of all ages to post funding requests for ‘people’, ‘programs’ or ‘places’.

We envisage this initiative as being competitive in the crowd funding space, particularly for

the support of education, research and professional development at and beyond the tertiary education level.

Preliminary discussions in 2016 were on ‘succession planning’ for this working party and the establishment of a Graduate House and Union Foundation which would be responsible for overseeing the major and increasingly important advancement initiatives. We look forward to reporting further on this possibility over 2017 and thank all Members for continuing to support us in whatever way they can so that we can continue to honour the legacy of our founders by providing for postgraduates of today and well into the future.

Congratulations to the Australia Day 2016 Honours List Recipients His Excellency Mr Tony William Negus AO APM awarded Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to public administration, particularly through senior law enforcement roles, to governance reform, and to national and international inter-agency counter-terrorism cooperation.

Mr Negus was Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police from 2009 to 2014.

Mr Philip Stanley Moss awarded Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to public administration, particularly in the areas of law enforcement integrity, anti-corruption and human rights.

VALETE BARBARA FUNDER, 1977 Our Founder, Barbara Anne Funder passed away on the 6th September, 2016. Her funeral service was held at Graduate House on the 20th September and in our December 2016 edition of the Melbourne Graduate we paid tribute to our college founding mother.

On the 8th February, 2017, a Memorial Service was held at St Michael's Church, Ashburton with Father Laurence Cortez.

The photograph below shows the plaque mounted at the Church to honour the memory of Barbara Funder and her parents.

In attendance at the Memorial Service were Barbara's long term friends, Barbara Devin Pozzi who was visiting Australia from Italy, Barbara Hall and Margaret Robin, as well as previous Chair of Council, Mr David Sparks, and the CEO/Head of College, Dr Kerry Bennett.

YUZO BABA, 2013 It was with great sadness to learn that our Resident Member Yuzo Baba most tragically passed away at the very tender age of 29 years. We all feel Yuzo's loss. For his parents and family that loss is immeasurably more.

Yuzo's first visit to Graduate House was from June to December in 2013. He returned in 2015, residing here from June until March of 2016. He was undertaking research with the School of Chemistry at The University of Melbourne with Professor Spas Kolev. Our heartfelt condolences are extended to Yuzo's parents, Professor Yoshinari Baba and Mrs Ritsu Baba, who have resided at Graduate House every year since 2010. Professor Baba has been working on a major Australian Research Council (ARC) funded research project with the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering on the development of low cost sorbents to remove contaminants in ground water.

We share some tributes and quotes from those close to Yuzo.

Residents at Graduate House in 2015-2016 were deeply saddened to learn of the unexpected death in Japan of our former resident. Yuzo spent a post-doctorate year in 2015 at The University of Melbourne in the School of Chemistry. He returned to Japan early in 2016 to take up an academic position at Tokushima University in Shikoku. His death brings a sad and untimely end to a bright career. Above all, his friends remember a warm-hearted, talented if sometimes reserved young man. Yuzo was confident in his ability and was looking forward to consolidating his academic career in his home country.

Yuzo, who was about to leave Australia, had invited us to have a farewell meal together at a traditional Japanese izakaya somewhere in Russell Street. We found the place on the internet but it was tucked away in a basement with only a very small sign out front. I remember Yuzo had to phone the manager twice to find the entrance door.

Ryo said he remembers Yuzo, his senior, as a bright and self-assured person, always helpful and friendly.

A contemporary of Yuzo at Graduate House, Dr Shinji Kanehashi, who was also undertaking post-doctoral research in chemical engineering at Melbourne, and is now an Assistant Professor at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, wrote to express his shock and sadness at Yuzo's death: "Dear Yuzo, I'm so fortunate to have found you. I have still difficulty dealing with this, but this is a true story. You were too young and you had a bright future ... May you rest in peace. With my deepest sympathy to your family.

Dr Shinji Kanehashi It was nice meeting Yuzo in Graduate House. I can say that he was a simple and wonderful person with a kind heart. He was a very promising academic. "You will be missed, Yuzo. May you rest in peace." I am also extending my deepest sympathy and prayers for Yuzo's family.

The Rev Canon Donald Walter Johnston, 1951 We regret the sad news of the death of The Rev Canon Donald Walter Johnston who passed away on the 20th November, 2016 DONALD WALTER JOHNSTON 1928 – 2016 Educated in Melbourne, London, Emmanuel College and Ridley Hall in Cambridge, Fr Donald had a distinguished and influential career in ministry and education in both Australia and Papua New Guinea (PNG).

In education, the posts of Chaplain at Brighton, then at Melbourne Grammar Schools, were followed by six years missionary service with the Anglican Church of PNG. There, he was Chaplain at Holy Name School, Dogura for a year before being appointed Head of Martyrs’ School, Popondetta in 1986.

He was responsible for parties of Melbourne Grammar School pupils having the opportunity to visit Martyrs’ School and other parts of PNG, experiences which, for many, will surely have played a significant role in their subsequent spiritual and personal development. Fr Donald was made a Canon by the Anglican Church of PNG (ACPNG) before his retirement in 1991.

Since returning to Melbourne, he had been a lively ambassador and advocate for ACPNG and Martyrs’ School.

A former Australian colleague, now working overseas, wrote, “What sad news. Fr Donald was a kind and utterly genuine person. May his influence on many people, both in PNG and Australia, bring forth spiritual fruit in abundance. He will be reunited with his beloved wife.”

The Johnston Library of Graduate House is named after Rev Johnston's father, William Wallace Stewart Johnston (1897-1962). Johnston Street in Fitzroy was named after his father's grandfather.

John (Jack) William Clarke OAM, 1964 Life Member of The Graduate Union, Jack Clarke OAM aged 95 years passed away peacefully on the 13th of December, 2016. The following are extracts from the Queen's College website vale for their former Vice-Master.

Jack Clarke will be remembered for his extraordinary term as Vice-Master of Queen's College from 1964 to 1988, and, above all, for his people skills and his deep psychological insight in guiding the lives of young people and serving the College community in an amazingly wide variety of ways.

Born in 1921 in Sheffield, Tasmania, Jack was the son of a Methodist minister. When his family moved to Melbourne, he attended Wesley College. After leaving school and working in a bank for two years, he enlisted in 1941 and served first with the Australian Army and then the British Army for a period of five years, ending his service with the rank of Captain. Subsequently, he enrolled at The University of Melbourne, was a non-resident student at Queen's College and gained an Arts degree and diplomas in Psychology, Social Work and Education. From 1955 to 1963 he took on a variety of positions in these disciplines, before being appointed Vice-Master of Queen’s in 1964.

With the appointment in 1966 of a new Master, Dr Owen Parnaby, a legendary partnership shaped the next two decades. Jack’s primary focus was on the residents, first men only, then from 1973 onwards both men and women. Known for truly caring about the welfare and wellbeing of the residents, Jack was a man of integrity and high standards who believed in the power of goodness. His influence on the lives of generations of residents is immeasurable and explains the unmatched respect and love that he inspired across the entire college community.

During retirement, Jack served as Acting Master for eight months in 1992/3 and provided temporary leadership also for four other Colleges. Shortly following his election as a Fellow of the College, Jack was awarded a medal in the Order of Australia in 1990 for his service to youth and to the community. For many, including those of The Graduate Union, Jack's death is said to mark the passing of an era.

Dr John Garland, 1962 Our deepest condolences are extended to the family and friends of Dr John Garland, and particularly to his wife, Life Member Mrs Janice Elizabeth Garland.

Rasied in Surrey Hills, the second son of Thomas and Mary Garland, John attended St Colman's before completing his secondary education at Parade College in 1951. At school he was known as a great footballer and a champion swimmer.

Gaining his medical degree from The University of Melbourne and becoming a Member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, Dr Garland spent a large part of his career practicing in psychiatry at The Melbourne Clinic which he joined in 1982. As explained by Br. Francis Irenaeus McCarthy of Parade College, who had encouraged him to pursue that career, John was to be applauded for what he had done in easing a lot of troubled minds.

Laurie Hudson, John's lifelong friend of almost 70 years, described John as 'clever, thoughtful and friendly; loyal, very understanding and tolerant', traits definitely made evident during his many visits to Graduate House where he was always warmly received and popular amongst our Members.

John was a Hawks (Hawthorn Football Club) supporter and a member of the Rotary Club of Richmond which has acknowledged his contribution to club activities and his wonderful sense of humour.

Dying suddenly at the age of 81 years, John is survived by his much loved wife and Life Member Janice Garland (nee Peeler), who for many years practised as an anaesthetist.

John was a great man unreservedly and is sadly missed by us all here at Graduate House.

FRANK FORD, 1950 We are saddened to learn from Mrs Olwen Ford about the death of her husband on 12th July, 2016. Frank Ford became a Life Member of The Graduate Union in 1950 and last visited Graduate House for the 2013 AGM and Dinner.

Mrs Ford said that Frank was proud to be a graduate of the University of Melbourne and valued his membership of The Graduate Union very much. Mr and Mrs Ford have donated regularly to the Scholarship and William Berry Wing Funds.

The following is an extract from the 15th July, 2016 edition of the Star Weekly.

In Memory: A tribute to Frank Ford, a Sunshine resident for over half a century.

Frank was born on 17th April, 1927. He was a teacher, lover of God and history, heritage activist, and Sunshine resident for over half a century. He died aged 89 years. Frank grew up in Ballarat on a farm at Mt Blowhard. The second of five children, he attended Mt Blowhard State School and then Ballarat High School. At 17 he became a trainee teacher with his first class at Macarthur St, Ballarat after only three days of induction. After graduation he had postings at Mt Beauty, Tallangatta and Bright.

Frank then went to study at the London School of Economics, University of London, and it was there he met Olwen. They married in London in 1960 and he convinced her to move to Australia. In that same year, Olwen and Frank settled in Sunshine, with Frank commencing as senior teacher at the new Sunshine West High School. He helped found that school, using rented church buildings before moving to teach at Sunshine High School, where he remained until 1972. The following year Frank took a post as lecturer at Burwood Teachers College, working there for the next two decades.

In all those years he continued to live in Sunshine, travelling to Burwood over the Westgate Bridge each day. Frank and Olwen raised five children. Their family now includes four grandchildren. Retirement was no rest for Frank and he was involved in many activities, especially in heritage issues and in the work of the Sunshine and District Historical Society. He spoke out strongly against the proposed introduction of poker machines and against the proposed demolition of the Bulk Store, on the Harvester Works site, even appearing (briefly) on television and the metropolitan press regarding the importance of saving the Bulk Store (now part of the Visy Cares Hub).

His faith was very important to him. He was an active member of St Mark’s Anglican, now Holy Apostles Church, Sunshine and Braybrook, and of the Victorian Branch of the Prayer Book Society of Australia. He was committed to family, near and far. He was an active and well-loved member of his local community and will be missed deeply.

PHYLLIS ANN GRAVE, 1984 We are saddened to about the death of Phyllis Ann Graves on the 22nd December, 2016.

Phyllis Ann Grave was born in 1932. Better known as Ann to all our Members, she was a very active contributor and was seen regularly at all our major events.

After her secondary school education, Ann pursued a Dress Design Diploma at Melbourne Technical College (now RMIT). Her career in that field did not take off because of few opportunities at that time.

Ann married at aged 22, and was fortunate to be able to pursue her passions of dressmaking and painting. She became a Member of The Graduate Union in 1984 just after having been conferred a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Melbourne. In recent years, Ann had pursued her interests in travel, sharing with us in the December 2015 issue of The Melbourne Graduate, stories about her wonderful European trip.

Staff remember Ann as petite, elegant and a friendly person with a cheerful smile. She was a volunteer at the monthly mailout for many years, and came to the dining room regularly, bringing her many friends along as guests.

Ann's last visit to Graduate House was on 2nd December, 2016, at the Chair's Cocktail Party.

Staff member Shirley, shared a heartfelt moment in which she had a very happy chat with Ann (see photo) at the new reception desk, just before helping her into a taxi home.

Little did she know that this would be her last conversation with Ann. Rest in peace, dear Ann.

Minnie Law We are saddened to learn of the death of Minnie Law on the 14th March, 2017.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the unexpected death of Minnie, Anthony (Tony) Law's daughter, who is survived by her husband, Steven Hoban, and her two young children, Emma and Zahra.

Mr Tony Law is beloved and respected by all at The Graduate Union and Graduate House. He was presented with an Outstanding Service Award for his many years of service to The Graduate Union since 1985 as our Auditor, by the President of The Graduate Union at the 2016 annual General Meeting.

Graduate House Society The Graduate House Society was launched on the 21st August, 2016 at the Founders and Benefactors Day. The Society seeks to recognise those who have chosen to remember The Graduate Union and Graduate House in their will. In providing for the Association in your will, you can choose how to support our vision and to preserve and grow a proud Membership institution that is owned and run by its Members. We hope to honour respectfully, according to wishes and in perpetuity those who support our Union and our House through bequests.

Diamond Jubilee Capital Fundraising Campaign 2016 saw development of the G-House master plan and lodgement of a planning application to construct an eleven-level above ground and a five-level below ground development, featuring 136 additional postgraduate ensuite rooms, a gymnasium, a large café and a theatrette with an editing suite. This major development will fortify the Association's legacy to postgraduates and address the need for more supportive, safe, mature and collegiate accommodation options for postgraduate students.

Fund Lifelong Learning Fund Lifelong Learning is The Graduate Union's online crowdfunding platform. Soon to be launched, this website will allow people to seek funding on-line for their education, research and social good activities. Commencing in 2015, this initiative was in development over 2016, the focus being on planning, determining the scope of the platform, legal issues and financial modelling. Website development soon followed to make the platform user-friendly, intuitive and interactive, and with good backend database management and responsivity.

The site will allow for the posting of ventures that are for the benefit of Graduate Union and Graduate House, as well as of ventures from those outside the Association. Each venture will be related to lifelong learning and its support - that is, for our Association's purposes of education for social good - and posted to one of three broad funding categories: People, Programs and Places. The funding model for Graduate Union/House ventures is designed to meet current requirements as well as those for the future. A small portion of the funds will be set aside into endowment reserves that will be used to establish scholarships, awards, professional development subsidies and other support for graduates in perpetuity.

Founders and Benefactors Day 2016 The Founders and Benefactors Day was held on Sunday the 21st of August, 2016 exclusively for those who have donated to The Graduate Union of The University of Melbourne.

President Dr Loughnan gave the commencement speech, while Members sampled the high tea delights which included minicupcakes, scones with jam and cream, macaroons and savoury finger sandwiches.

“What we do at The Graduate Union is so important to so many people’s lives as they move forward,” said Dr Loughnan. “There’s nothing better in this life than doing something for other people … What we are endeavouring to do is to give people opportunities. There would be so many people in this room that have achieved so many things in this life because of the opportunities that somebody or some organisation gave them,” he explained.

Dr Loughnan introduced the prestigious guest speaker for the event, Mr Julian Burnside AO QC, an eminent Australian, commercial law barrister, human rights and refugee advocate, author and supporter of the arts whose presentation was entitled The Transience of Existence.

Julian began by explaining his 'graduate pathway' and how he happened upon a career as a barrister after the Chief Justice of New Zealand recommended that he go to the Bar instead of into management. “It only occurred to me a couple of years ago that what he really meant was go and get another glass of wine,” joked Mr Burnside who in 2004 won the Sydney Peace Prize.

It is this ‘misunderstanding’ that has allowed Mr Burnside to act on landmark cases including Rose Porteous (Porteous v. Rinehart), Maritime Union of Australia (Patrick Stevedores v.

Maritime Union), Alan Bond, cash-for-comment inquiry, and the Stolen Generation (Trevorrow v. South Australia). This modesty was persistent throughout the presentation where Julian constantly described his work as “accidental” or “mistaken” such as when he was asked by “accident” to litigate in the Tampa case (Ruddock v. Vadarlis) in 2001. His work on this and subsequent cases for refugees and asylum seekers since has been tremendous.

“Education is what enables our society to continue, hopefully, in a way that’s better than it has previously been doing,” he says. “... those of you who are benefactors of Graduate House, you are doing something that will endure beyond the transience of your mortal existence.” Thank you Mr Burnside. Two Resident Members also presented on the day. Yuliia Velichenko, the 2016 Graduate House Scholarship recipient, spoke about her research on novel dual action antihypertensive medicines.

“My study seeks to not only promote global care on health but also provides opportunities for sustainable development,” she said.

David Allinson, a Graduate House Bursary awardee, spoke about his volunteering experience with the Miriuwung Gajerrong Aboriginal Corporation in Kununurra, Western Australia. “Supported by this funding provided by The Graduate Union, I was able to engage with the corporate realities of the Native Title regime,” he said.

A table quiz on the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals was hosted by Honorary College Fellow Professor Stephen Peterson and CEO/Head of College, Dr Kerry Bennett. In many Guest speaker Mr Julian Burnside AO QC spoke ways, the quiz was about bringing global issues of about his graduate pathway from graduation to poverty, hunger, miscarriages of justice – etc – to where he is now as an eminent Australian and the forefront, so that we do start to realise that, public lawyer as UN Secretary-General Ban-Ki Moon said, “there is no Plan B because we do not have a Planet B.” Table 2 was the winner of the well-received quiz and each person on the table won a Graduate Union brand calico bag and a keep-cup.

Chair of Council, Mr Rhys Watson, then delivered his address on the legacy and ethos of the Association, narrating the story of how a young Stella Langford was sheltered from the rain by the then College Warden, William E F Berry. “The Stella Langford wing today – which we are all in – is a reminder of that moment in the history of this college of graduates,” said Cr Watson.

Launching then the Graduate House Society, a bequest program, Cr Watson invited Members to help build the future of the Association by providing for the Association in their will.

The event was a success, and will continue annually to thank, honour and engage with those who have contributed to the legacy and future of our now 106 year old membership Association.

Milena Nadgorny I am undertaking my research doctoral studies at The University of Melbourne in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. After the completion of my Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering, and Masters degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, I spent three years at Hewlett-Packard (HP) in the Research and Development Materials Department as a Chemical Engineer and Project Lead.

In this role I developed high-throughput novel packaging inks for large format inkjet printers. HP Management awarded me a Recognition Award for this development and for the filing of a United States Patent for the new technology. This unique oportunity to lead the research and development of new materials in a multidisciplinary environment was an important milestone in my professional career. My deep interest and involvement in materials research became more clearly defined for me. I thus Milena Nadgorny decided to pursue an academic research degree. Fortunately, I was successful in gaining both a Melbourne International Research Scholarship (MIRS) and a Melbourne International Fee Remission Scholarship (MIFRS) to support my enrolment at The University of Melbourne and in the Chemical Engineering Department.

My PhD research includes the development of new functional and “smart” materials for 3D-printing. With the rising popularity and global utilisation of this accessible and enabling technology, the interest of the scientific community is focused on expanding the applicability of 3D-printing and its integration into new areas. Therefore, it is essential to develop materials that can perform specific functions, such as catalysis of chemical reactions, responsivity to alternating environmental conditions, recovery after mechanical damage, energy conversion, etc. Rather than simple plastics broadly commercialised today, “smart” functional materials hold great promise for the future evolution of many areas, such as tissue engineering, electronics and robotics.

In the framework of my PhD research, I synthesised pH-responsive and functional polymers that can be processed and designed as filaments for 3D-printers. This challanging multi-step process and its optimisation resulted in a succesful production of 3D-printable “smart” polymers. After 3D-printing and chemical functionalisation, the printed devices showed a successful function as flow-regulating valves, which could contract and expand in response to solutions with different pH values, acting as sensitive flow-regulators. Moreover, these constructs could act as efficient and recycleable catalytic devices for degradation of environmental pollutants.

This novel approach allows for recycling of the device and the elimination of any need for costly and time consuming separation processes. This work was recently published in the American Chemical Society (ACS) Applied Materials and Interfaces journal (Nadgorny M, Xiao Z, Chen C,

My current research activities include synthesis, characterisation, processing and 3D-printing of self-healing materials, which are capable of recovering from mechanical damage. These materials can thus be used as protective coatings and for the construction of objects which must have an extended lifespan. I am particularly interested in exploring the potential of these 3D-printable objects in the field of soft robotics.

My research at The University of Melbourne is a great opportunity to grow personally and professionally. I was the first student to undertake research in this field in my group, which challenged me to establish the fundamentals in this area, and to discover new directions of research. With a friendly and supportive environment, the project has evolved rapidly.

As a PhD student in Luke Connal’s research laboratory, I am working with world leading experts and studying advanced techniques of preparation, characterisation and fabrication of new functional polymers. After my graduation, I plan to return to the printing industry and to contribute to future technological advances with the new and valuable knowledge gained during my PhD studies. I hope to establish fruitful collaborations with international experts, and to work on cutting-edge projects in the field of printable materials.

On a more personal note, I enjoy staying in Melbourne and being a resident in Graduate House.

Meeting people from all over the world, establishing new friendships and sharing a supportive academic environment has been made possible during my stay here. Graduate House and its amazing community have become my second home overseas.

Graham Mitchell When Dr Graham Mitchell was just 16 years old, he decided that he was destined to become a farmer.

Although he didn’t have a farm, he nevertheless enrolled to study at an agricultural college in South Australia, where he grew up, and was dealt some pivotal advice: he should think about going to university.

This suggestion to a young Mitchell from the then Principal of Roseworthy Agricultural College was followed by guidance through the application process until he was accepted into the Veterinary School at The University of Sydney.

Just before completing his undergraduate program, Dr Mitchell wrote an essay on the thymus gland (a small gland in the neck), a subject which had been recommended to him by the Professor of Pathology in the Veterinary School. The more he read, the more he liked the topic. His Professor thence encouraged him to go to Melbourne due to the great amount of research being done on the thymus gland at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research.

“I jumped on a train, it must have been around October, came down and met Gus Nossal, the new Director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute and I thought - these are the people that I want to interact with,” said Mitchell. He decided to commence work in medical research and completed his PhD on the thymus gland at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. During this time 1966 to 1969 - before he went to the USA - he lived at Graduate House.

“It was full board, and there was only one meal missing, for only $17 a week! Someone cleaned my room, made food, I walked only about 500 metres down Grattan Street to school and it was a wonderful accommodation. I didn’t have to worry about anything,” he recalled.

The memory of his home away from home has never left him, and as he gets older he feels that its importance continues to grow. “It’s one of those tragedies that as you go through your career, you don’t think back too often to those pivotal moments and then by the time you do, you’ve gone a bit gaga and your memory is a bit unreliable,” he said.

His memories of Graduate House, however remain lucid, not only because of how accommodating he found Graduate House to be, but also because of the throughput of people at that time.

“I wasn’t completely naïve, but I’d never been overseas except to New Zealand and at that time there were American professors coming through and Europeans and Asians, all doing their PhDs or postdocs, fabulous people who were just extraordinary,” he said. “There was lots of conversation and I learned a lot. Some of my stories still relate to what I heard from a couple of visiting American professors who were highly memorable and had lots of stories.”

At Graduate House, Mitchell was not only able to focus all of his energy into his academic work, but also felt that there was an opening out of what the world was about. He had spent his time as an agricultural student and a veterinary student, and now met professors from many fields, from ancient history to philosophy. His enduring memory is of meeting an extraordinary range of thinkers who were experts in a particular field. “I just thought, this was a wonderful opening out of what you could do in academia and university – what a university has to offer in terms of people as well as what they do.”

The focus on academic pursuits through the accommodating nature of Graduate House enabled Mitchell to focus on his PhD about the thymus gland. At the time, it was thought that this gland may have been important at one time in evolution, but that it had no real function and was redundant. However in 1958, Professor Jacques Miller at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute discovered that the thymus gland was crucial to the development of the immune system. Along with Graham Mitchell, then a PhD student, they discovered that the thymus gland produces cells which migrate from the thymus and interact with another cell from bone marrow to make antibodies, the major frontier – the policemen – of the body, which look for foreign entities and eliminate them. They reported that the cell from the thymus, the cell from the bone marrow, T cells and B cells, all collaborate to produce antibodies. The results from the Miller and Mitchell experiments led to a new paradigm and were considered to be a major discovery in immunology.

Mitchell then held postdoctorial research positions in California, London and Basel for four or five years. During these research posts he learned about the different cultural dynamics of research teams. In the United States, for instance, he found there was a great emphasis on group collaboration, while in the United Kingdom one standout individual tended to receive more assistance. In Switzerland it was a hybrid of both of these approaches. Returning to Australia, Mitchell felt equipped with a kit bag of new concepts and techniques and new ways of doing things. He returned to the Walter and Eliza Institute and created the Parasitology Program – malaria vaccines, etc. “I was very fortunate to have made that discovery with Jacques Miller and to have then been able to spend four or five years in the three best immunology laboratories, at that time, in the world. Then you start earning your keep,” he said. “You are in training all that time and learning. Now you have to start translating it into something creative which your name is associated with, not your mentor’s name, not your PhD supervisor’s name, but your name.”

At the age of 50, Mitchell became Director of the Royal Melbourne Zoo where he became more interested in biodiversity. Due to his previous work in the medical field, particularly as a parasitologist, he had made many connections in Asia where he had studied diseases in the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. This helped him to attract curators and experts to the Zoo to look after a specific animal, and to get these experts into zoos in Asia to do various conservation programs. “Due to my medical research I was able to open up international collaboration for the Melbourne Zoo, and that program endures to this day. It’s in the hands of very good people who are continuing it on,” he said.

“Another strong feature of a life in research is that you make magnificent international connections, and I had 30 years of experience at the World Health Organisation in the tropical disease research program,” Mitchell said. Here he would chair and sit on committees – about 10 committees in tropical disease research and support for training and research – and he met some incredibly top flight people from all parts of the globe. He says that he was a major beneficiary of all the contacts he made around the world, and had had an idea of what was happening in his field and in his laboratory, but perhaps more pertinently, he knew what others were doing out there really where it counted: in the bush, in the disease endemic countries.

How bad was the malaria program in Tanzania? How bad was the leishmanial problem in India?

“That was a fantastic means for me to be a tropical health person globally. We received a major grant from the Rockefeller Foundation and that was again, 10 laboratories around the world, all doing tropical disease research and once a year we’d all get together all around the world, a huge number of contacts and you stay very current,” he said. “In research you must be current.

If you’re out of research for a while, you notice how rapidly you become obsolete. You are just not plugged in with what the world’s doing, with the new techniques, what new languages they’re using to describe their concepts or technologies. I never felt more current than when I was running a laboratory in Melbourne plugged into the World Health Organisation and the Rockefeller Foundation. We were reasonably pioneer. We were a good lab, we had very good

people, very good scientists, very good technicians, we were well-funded and connected. Great collaborators.”

Today Mitchell channels his expertise through Foursight Associates, an advising consultancy servicing science, technology and innovation with a variety of clients in the financial, university and commercial manufacturing sectors. Foursight's most prominent client has been the Victorian Government. The members of Foursight, as a collective, have been Chief Scientists in departments of the Victorian Government and effectively, the Chief Scientists in Victoria, particularly during the Bracks-Brumby era and in what they did for the biotechnology sector.

Foursight began when Mitchell was Director of Research at CSL Limited, Australia’s largest developer, manufacturer and marketer of ethical human biologicals and veterinary products.

He found that he was constantly being asked to do various things due to his background, but was not always able to say yes, as it would not have provided any value to the shareholders of CSL. But the thought of being able to say yes proved to be persuasive. “I was having a chat with John Stocker, Chief Executive of CSIRO (1990-1996) and he said he felt the same, so we decided to set up a consultancy where we could do things like advising universities and high net worth individuals as to where their investments might be placed in terms of biotechnology or pharmaceutical or biological science generally,” he said. “It was the time of the Atlanta Olympic Games and the Dream Team and the Oarsome Foursome and we thought - why don’t we have four, and call ourselves Foursight? John had been doing a lot of work with David Pennington because he was advising Dick Pratt at that time, and he had just retired as Vice Chancellor of The University of Melbourne. Mitchell then contacted Gus Nossal, who had just retired as Director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, and “within 20 seconds” Foursight was formed. This year they celebrated their 20th birthday. As time goes on, Foursight will be more selective with their projects, says Mitchell, making way for a new generation.

From South Australia to Sydney, Melbourne and around the world, Graham Mitchell is the global nomad driven by purpose and armed with knowledge to make a difference – which he undoubtedly has – for generations to come. Though generations may change, there will always be a place for Graham Mitchell at Graduate House.

“I’m glad to say I was one of Graduate House’s first postgraduate student residents in the late 60’s when I was undertaking my doctoral research. My time there was rewarding and memorable with many friendships made.

My room was on the second storey of the Leicester Street terraces overlooking what was then a bowling green.

I understand this room is in the exact location that has been set aside for the Head of College’s office after completion of the Diamond Jubilee re-development.

I completed my research doctorate in 1969. Graduate House was a launching pad for what was to come next a life in biomedical research, global health, conservation and innovation".

Avi Gandhi "Kia ora koutou, ko Avi Gandhi taku ingoa". I have been one of the Kiwi residents at Graduate House since February 2016. Currently I’m in my second, and final year, of studying a Master of Construction Management (Building) at The University of Melbourne’s School of Design.

Moving to Melbourne from Wellington, New Zealand was the biggest decision of my life, and despite the slightly expensive lifestyle here, it has definitely been a great decision to live and study in a city with a similar population to the whole of New Zealand. The sporting and arts culture of the city also helps a great deal to assimilate easily.

As I write this, I am attempting to balance my assignments, graduate program applications, and a social life to keep sane. Throughout the year I travelled to the country towns of Sale and Yea as part of the Touch Football and Habitat for Humanity clubs, respectively. I also visited Great Ocean Road and the Grampians with friends from home and went on a Graduate House excursion to 1000 Steps and Sherbrooke Falls.

Many know Australia as a big and spacious With my road buddies at the Sydney Opera House country. However, that fact never really hit me until my resident friends Thomas Nantz, Muzaffar Adnan and I decided to road trip to Canberra and Sydney during the winter break. You know it’s a long drive from Sydney to Melbourne when you stop at two different McDonald’s for lunch and dinner! On another occasion, I was again amazed at the size of Australia, this time regarding how long it takes to fly between Melbourne and Cairns when a group of us residents decided to make the most of the early summer.

The reward was that it would be one of the most memorable destinations I have visited, namely snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef and witnessing more of a native and tropical culture. As an avid sports fan, I have made a number of visits to some of the sporting facilities and still want to add more to my bucket list of sporting arenas around Melbourne and the suburbs.

Hailing from New Zealand, I will never fully understand the game of Aussie Rules, nor will I choose a team to get around - mainly because I’ll always love Rugby Union. However, I have attended a number of footy games and have been entertained nonetheless. Another sporting event I would not usually attend is the Melbourne Cup, where a small group of us residents had the urge to suit up/dress up and throw in a bit of money for a winner. We had a small success by winning and gaining a small profit.

All in all, my experience at Graduate House has been positive and eye-opening. Although it may seem as if socialising took main priority, studying and working on assessments were prevalent all-encompassing activities throughout the year. Despite each resident studying a different degree, we all help each other as best we can to push through.

Melissa Kennedy I am studying my Master of Laws at the Melbourne Law School with a particular interest in criminal law and related areas. I have also studied negligence and mental health law, and I will be studying Royal Commissions and Public Inquiries later this year. I am a part time student and have chosen to undertake my course over a few years to allow time to pursue other interests outside of studies, part time work and voluntary work. Before returning to study, I worked in commercial litigation. I loved the legal research side which is only a very small component of legal practice, so I decided to return to study.

I am currently working part time as a content writer for an online platform called Kialo, which means ‘reason’ in the global language of Esperanto. Kialo is currently in the beta stage and is being developed as a tool to encourage thoughtful decision-making and engagement with challenging issues. For the most part, contributors have experience in university debating or in areas such as philosophy and ethics. Before this, I spent time coaching school students in debating for their interschool competition, and I also volunteered in criminal law and drug outreach at Fitzroy Legal Service.

I decided to study law initially because I loved reading, arguing and was interested in understanding the rules governing society. In all honesty, I did not really know what I would be learning about as an 18 year old undergraduate, but I very quickly discovered that I liked reading cases, understanding legal principles and thinking through legal problems. I loved mooting (mock law court) and other legal competitions.

In 2013, I was an editor of the Monash University Law Review. We published 941 pages over three issues and I learnt a great deal about legal scholarship and the editing process. For our Annual Dinner, the then Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, the Hon Robert French AC spoke to the editorial committee, contributors, faculty members and guests from the legal profession. It was certainly a highlight of my time at Monash University. I also worked as a Research Assistant at the Monash Law School for two academics, in Cybercrime and International Criminal Law. I have found that half way through my Master of Laws, I enjoy very much learning about the theories underpinning the areas of law and grappling with interdisciplinary issues. For example, in a subject on counter-terrorism, I wrote a 10,000 word paper on preparatory terrorist offences and I was required to read widely on ‘risk’ theory which intersects considerably

with criminology and political thought. After I complete my Master of Laws, I am aiming to commence a PhD in an area of domestic criminal law, but I will need some more time to prepare a research proposal. I still have time to think this through.

Outside of my studies, I am a member of a number of book clubs, including the public lecture series at the University, ‘Melbourne Masterclass: 10 Great Books’ as well as more social ones. I also have a strong interest in the Classical World, so I currently attend a Latin reading group and I participated in the Melissa Kennedy debating Melbourne University Classics Summer School, a week of public lectures. I have participated extensively in university debating, attended the World Universities Debating Championships in Botswana and Manila and was asked to select the Monash University teams last year for the championships. I also have a season subscription with the Melbourne Theatre Company, attend musicals and am a passionate Melbourne Football Club supporter.

Priyanka Rajani Anyone, in any corner of the world, who has heard anything about Pakistan in the last three decades knows that the country has had, and still does have, a fair bit of trouble on its plate.

We have unresolved conflicts with our neighbours, territory disputes that justify large amounts of military spending, limited funding for health and education, under-developed government institutions, corruption, and a democratic government that still holds less power than the military. Add to this a rapidly expanding youth demographic that faces technological change beyond its imagination and ancient patriarchal standards to conform by, to get a snapshot of the environment I grew up in.

In this environment, violence and security threats are unfortunately always around the corner.

This hinders growth for a large part of the population but somehow the resilience of the citizens keeps taking the country forward. The two most relevant and inspiring forces I grew up with in this Pakistan were the activists and the entrepreneurs. The activists were the people who would risk their lives on the streets protesting each day, trying to get controversial women’s rights bills to parliament, trying to stop forced religious conversions, working with children on the streets to secure better futures for them, reporting on the atrocities committed by army personnel and sheltering those who needed support, sometimes at their own expense.

The entrepreneurs were the ones who would dare to invest their resources into an unstable economy with massive potential but little accountability. At a small scale, I saw restaurant owners who benefited from cheap labour rates but who were also aware that their staff were mostly migrants from another city who could not afford three basic meals a day, so they had to be fed at work to keep productivity levels high. At a large scale, I saw multi-million dollar appliance companies realise that if they included bottom of pyramid customers to their target markets, they would add to their profits and social impact levels beyond their imagination.

These businesspersons saw the use of business in a non-traditional environment, as a social force, to achieve outcomes that the United Nations and international aid organisations had been failing to achieve for years.

This is the environment that made me realise the importance of social innovation and led me to human rights organisations at a very young age. I started studying for my Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Economics and Politics at the Lahore University of Management Sciences in 2009.

At the same time, I worked with Amnesty International and occasionally the Journalism Society at university to bring attention towards issues in education, health and security in Pakistan.

This was the first time I realised the scale of issues our world today faces, from an ancient education system to outdated policies and the increasing effects of global warming.

What stood out the most during this time was that people (regardless of education, background or age) did not like to acknowledge just how drastic things were in their country. They also would not acknowledge that none of us were close to finding the right solutions for our problems (on a local or international scale). People also tended to see the problems as being of a social nature, to be dealt with through just social workers and welfare departments. Those who dealt with economics just measured Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rates and those who got business degrees generated sales. One seemed to have little or no connection to the other.

Trying to have a conversation about most issues was frustrating and mostly alienating during these four years.

This frustration led me to the world of social enterprise. This also informed the first three years of my professional life, focusing my career on social innovation and market development in developing economies. As time passed, the difference between those who saw themselves as business leaders and those who saw themselves as social impact creators became wider.

My workplaces, from the social enterprise incubator I set up to the Australian Government Funded project I worked on, struggled to find people who could wear both hats well. I moved to a boutique consulting firm a few years later and the same struggle continued when I tried to recruit for positions. I could either hire someone who had spent their entire career researching poverty extensively, without ever trying to implement ground level solutions to eradicate it, or I could hire someone who excelled at selling goods to people on the ground, without being able to determine the exact repercussions these sales would have on the growth of that community. The more I ran into this divide between business and social systems, the more convinced I became that the solution lies in integrating the two. The need for established social systems and evolved business principles presented in conjunction was all around.

Business with social impact remained a point of fascination for me throughout this journey. To date I believe that profit churning entities can benefit the communities in which they function, through small investments and changes, should they choose to do so. This requires knowledge of the environments businesses function in, their concerns and priorities and most important, an ability to think outside the box. The search for this knowledge led me to the Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the Melbourne Business School.

There is a general lack of good leadership and entrepreneurial knowledge in the world today.

This problem applies particularly to the not-for-profit and services sectors. Entrepreneurship, innovation and economic growth are crucial for any community's success. This can be in the form of an agricultural fair trade group in the mountains covering northern Pakistan or in the form of a bustling city’s food culture in Australia. Both kinds of organisations need business management expertise to send out the right message to their consumers, to hire workers that fit their needs, to develop strategies that allow them to expand and to keep track of their successes and failures - all the while ensuring they generate a profit each year.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” These words have never been more relevant than in a world where terrorism is international, climate change is racing ahead, economies are highly

interdependent and technology allows us to communicate instantly across the globe. This world needs leaders that combine profit with social impact at every stage to find innovative, scalable, sustainable solutions for our problems. The Melbourne Business School MBA equips students with the skills required to understand these problems better, ask relevant questions, find and implement customised solutions that tailor to profit and social impact. It helps someone like me fill the gaps I see in the local and international business community today.

My academic journey so far has given me the opportunity to broaden my focus, learn from examples outside of South Asia and prepare for the global challenges we face today as I begin to explore more ways to combine business with social impact.

Awards M. V. Anderson Award The M. V. Anderson award recognises the achievements of graduates who have developed skills and insights from their field of study for the benefit of the wider community.

The award is donated by the family of Magnus Victor Anderson, who was a significant contributor and founding member of The Graduate Union.

At the 2016 Chair's Cocktail Party, Commerce Alumni Council member Mr Matthew Schofield announced the 2016 M. V. Anderson award recipients as Resident Members, Mr Yicheng Zhou and Ms Rofan Teo (in absentia).

Graduate House Research Scholarship The 2016 Graduate House Research Scholarship was awarded to Yuliia Velichenko, PhD candidate in Organic Chemistry, for her research on The Development of Novel Dual-Action Antihypertensive Medicines. With the funding awarded, Yuliia attended the 13th International Conference on the Chemistry of Selenium and Tellerium in Gifu, Japan. “The conference was about making medicines with selenium and tellurium,” she said. "I was able to connect with people who are doing similar chemistry and research, and to seek advice during a period when I was experiencing challenges with my research.” She expressed honour in having won this prestigious Research Scholarship, adding that it looks great on her curriculum vitae! graduateunionannualreport • 76

Abby Chen and Callum McNair were nominated by Graduate House to attend the 2016 National Student Leadership Forum on faith and values.

Abby, a student of the Juris Doctor program at The University of Melbourne, wrote that she made some professional connections including one with a fellow law student from a similar background with whom she hopes to start up a business in the future. “We found that we had a lot in common. We both saw some business opportunities," she said. The exposure and opportunity to interact with other students and future leaders, allowed Abby to exercise her networking skills, but, most importantly to change her perspective on social good and what we can do to achieve it.

Callum, a Master of Laws student at The University of Melbourne, noted his delight and privilege in being nominated and sponsored to attend the National Student Leadership Forum. "The Forum was an opportunity for me to reflect on my leadership abilities.

I learnt a lot about myself. I am a lawyer and I deal in facts and this Forum certainly made me step outside my comfort zone. I encourage all Graduate House Members to apply to attend this Forum in 2017,” said Callum.

Graduate House Olympics As the Olympic torch relay made its way through Brazil to the seaside city of Rio de Janeiro, one might say that it made a slight digression to Carlton, albeit perhaps only in spirit. Residents at Graduate House, for the first time, participated in the Graduate House Olympics organised

by Accommodation Manager, Diana Bachman and Duty Resident, Scott Nelson.

The call-out was simple: five teams of five residents who were ready to battle it out for the medals of beautiful gold, silver and bronze. By 17th August the teams were ready, notwithstanding major disruptions to their training programs: The Hawks, Vorsa, K Team, Bloodbath and French Toast Mafia. The crowd roared and applauded each team as they entered the arena.

The night’s events to reach victory were: ball in the bucket, balloon racing, elephant strikes, order the rings and tissue ping pong. Dr Bennett and Diana Bachman were the referees for the games to ensure that no one cheated. Those caught offending had to pay the penalty of wearing a hula skirt and singing 'Baa baa black sheep'. “The Residents had an excellent time and were great competitors,” said Diana.

The teams threw, arranged, jumped, struck and strategised their way to potential victory, but only one team was victorious. The mighty Hawks - no, not Hawthorn, but the Graduate House Hawks - proved unbeatable, humbly (not quite) accepting the gold (maybe chocolate) medal around their necks. “Next year we hope to see the games return, and perhaps even move them outside, with more teams, more games and more competition!” said Diana.

Buildings and Facilities Buildings and Facilities Subcommittee The Buildings and Facilities subcommittee supports the Council of The Graduate Union by monitoring and reviewing policies and practices relating to the development and management of The Graduate Union’s buildings and facilities.

More specifically, the subcommittee: •

oversees the development of a master plan (physical infrastructure) for any future expansion of The Graduate Union’s buildings and facilities;

•

oversees the development of plans for upgrading specific buildings, parts of buildings or facilities;

•

reviews the fees, charges and conditions for the use of college residential rooms and facilities and recommends any changes for adoption by the Council;

•

monitors the implementation of approved capital expenditure;

•

monitors and ensures timely maintenance of all buildings and facilities;

•

establishes, reviews and updates operational risk management policies and monitors their application; and

•

reviews the optimal use of buildings and facilities and recommends to Council any changes thought desirable or necessary.

Occupancy For 2016, the average occupancy rate was 94.80% as compared to 94.21% in 2015. As shown in this bar graph, the year started off well with an average occupancy of 89.95% in January, the highest level seen for this month in any year. The months from March to November had average occupancy rates of 97.75%.

Planning application for Stage 1 of the Master Plan In 2000, The Graduate Union’s master plan envisaged the development of our central main wing, built subsequently in 2005, and our southern (Stella Langford) wing, built thence in 2010. At that time, Stage 3 was seen as a redevelopment behind the terraces from 222 to 234 Leicester Street and preliminary plans were drafted for a five-storey facility with a ground floor café, a first floor theatre, new residential rooms on the remaining levels and preservation of the front of the terraces.

In October 2015 the precinct entered Capital City Zone 5 (CCZ) and became subject to a Design and Development Overlay (DDO Schedule 61) providing for integration of lower scale heritage buildings with new developments to a height of forty metres. At this same time in 2015, Melbourne City Council (MCC) was developing plans to ‘reimagine’ University Square (immediately to the west of Graduate House) and the Melbourne Metro Rail Authority (MMRA) was undertaking feasibility studies for the new underground railway including a station under Grattan Street (from Leicester Street to Royal Parade) to the north-west of Graduate House.

Acknowledging these major, exciting and needed initiatives for the precinct, the Association brought together a roundtable of experts in 2015 and 2016 to develop a second long-term – in this case, a ten year - G-House Master Plan. The members of this roundtable over these years have included Life Members, Mr Roy Hardcastle AO (Engineering), Ms Natalie Gray (Town Planner) and Professor Max Stephens (Melbourne Graduate School of Education); members of the Buildings and Facilities subcommittee, including the Resident Member representatives; and consultants from MGS Architects (Ms Eli Giannini, Mr Rob McGauran, Ms Catherine Ranger), Prowse Quantity Surveyors (Mr Anthony Prowse, Mr Evan Zhu), Bonacci Group (Mr Stephen Payne, Mr Silvio Vitelleschi), Tract Consultants (Ms Katie Murphy, Mr Damien Soussan), MD Cubed (Ms Diana DeZilwa), Trethowan Architecture Interiors Heritage (Mr Bruce Trethowan) and Cardno (Mr Peter Sullivan).

The Association is indebted to this group of dedicated professionals who have worked cohesively and effectively to outline the three stages of this master plan: Stage 1 - The Terraces, Stage 2 The South Wing and Stage 3 - The Central Wing.

A planning application for Stage 1 – from 222 to 234 Leicester Street – of this ten-year master plan was lodged with Melbourne City Council (MCC) on the 8th September, 2016. This redevelopment plan is for eleven storeys above ground and five basement levels.

The west-facing rooms of the terraces – those overlooking the Reimagined University Square – will be preserved, as will the entirety of 234 Leicester Street, the northernmost terrace.

Many heritage features lost in the course of history will be reinstated, including the central pediment and decorative urns on the façade roofline, the tiled entrances to each terrace door and the stained glass windows above and to the side of each of the ground floor terrace doors.

The foyer at 222 Leicester Street (to be renamed the Barbara Funder Lounge), together with the preserved Johnston Library and the M. V. Anderson room, will become Member-only areas and a small gallery will be installed to the east of these rooms for the exhibition of our history.

The ground floor of the development behind the terraces has a stylish indoor café that will be accessible through a new northwards opening onto Grattan Street where we shall seek to operate also an outdoor café.

To the rear (east) of the café will be a secure and private entrance for Resident Members entering Graduate House from the north-east (though the main entrance will continue to be at 220 Leicester Street).

The first floor sees an expanded and modern resident area with lounge, music room and shared kitchen, as well as much improved office facilities and a staff room.

The floor above will be a meeting and function services space allowing for flexible configuration, as well as a theatrette with an editing suite. Above this will be eight storeys, each with seventeen 20m2 ensuite rooms.

The roof will be a stylish deck on which to relax while admiring the great view in all directions.

In 2017, we look forward to obtaining the permit and developing a very detailed design and construction plan. All going well with our Diamond Jubilee Capital Fundraising Campaign, we hope to commence construction in 2018 or 2019 and to complete this redevelopment within eighteen months.

2017 is thus also a year for comprehensive thinking and planning to manage the inevitable interruption to our accommodation facility and to continue our diverse range of membership, meeting and function services to Members. We ask for your support and contributions for this much needed expansion to meet the needs of the ever increasing graduate market.

Parkville Rail Station The Melbourne Metro Rail Project involves the construction of two nine kilometre long underground rail tunnels from South Kensington station through Melbourne’s central business district (CBD) to South Yarra, and five new underground stations known, at the date of publication, as Arden, Parkville, CBD North, CBD South and Domain.

The Parkville Station is to be located under Grattan Street from Royal Parade eastwards to the west side of Leicester Street and the two tunnels are to be more than twenty metres underground, passing alongside our northernmost terrace (234 Leicester Street).

During 2016 The Graduate Union has thus been in communication with the Melbourne Metro Rail Authority (MMRA), an administrative body established early 2015 under the Victorian State Government’s Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources tasked with delivering the Metro Tunnel by 2026. MMRA roles and responsibilities include planning and development of a project reference design, site investigations, stakeholder engagement, planning approvals and procurement, through to construction delivery and project commissioning.

Discussions and meetings at various levels have been towards gaining a comprehensive understanding of the project, to identify the risks to The Graduate Union and Graduate House and to determine mitigation and management strategies. The Association also lodged a detailed submission in which was outlined concerns about business interruption, structural damage to the terraces and future capacity to develop, and presented to the Inquiry Advisory Committee (IAC) Melbourne Metro Rail hearing in September 2016 on the Environmental Effects Statement (EES), the Environmental Performance Requirements (EPR) and the draft planning scheme amendment.

when telephone lines are relocated to run under Leicester Street. Meetings are being held with MMRA and John Holland, the company contracted to undertake these early works, to ensure that Resident Members and those visiting Graduate House are kept well informed in advance, that monitoring equipment is being installed to measure noise, vibration, structural shifts, air quality, etc. and that mitigation/management measures are put in place accordingly.

Following appointment of the main contractor for this project late in 2017, construction of the station and tunnels will be from 2018 to 2026. In the first instance, the station will be an ‘open cut’. Acoustic sheds will then be put over this box for works to continue unabated 24/7.

Following the building of the station, tunnel boring machines will install the tunnels.

The Graduate Union supports the installation of the Metro Rail Loop and looks forward to completion of the Parkville Station. There are obvious advantages in having a modern public transport stop on our doorstep and we commend the professionalism and hard work of the MMRA – particularly those working with the Parkville Reference Group - the Minister for Planning and the early works contractor in ensuring effective, efficient and communicated delivery of this exciting development for Melbourne.

Reimagining University Square In last year’s report, we outlined plans by Melbourne City Council (MCC) to ‘reimagine’ University Square, the park to the west of Graduate House bounded by Leicester, Grattan, Barry and Pelham Streets. This needed development will increase the greenery and vibrancy of a much loved and well-used park in what is increasingly referred to as the graduate precinct.

In 2016, MCC undertook a comprehensive community stakeholder engagement process with which The Graduate Union was involved. From late 2015 to September 2016, concept and the draft master plans were made available for feedback. The views of the Association, together with those from many other stakeholders, were addressed and in December 2016, MCC adopted the final Master Plan.

In 2017, Leicester Street (from Pelham Street on the south-side to Grattan Street on the northside) will become a single-lane unidirectional one-way street road within a park. Additionally, work will commence on the green, the Pelham Street park front and biodiversity corridor and social spaces. By 2022, this installation should be complete.

Off-site acquisition In our reiterative market analyses of the future needs and requirements of graduates for accommodation, the predictions are for an increasing demand for postgraduate college-like residencies.

To meet this demand, and as outlined previously, we have a clear G-House master plan and a submitted planning application for additional and much-needed accommodation rooms.

Such development, however, is very costly, affects revenue generation through business interruption and decreased service provision capability, and has significant lag times before it becomes operational.

Council has thus determined to purchase suitable properties, or parts thereof, in locations beyond our Leicester Street facility and has constructed and begun implementing an Offsite Acquisition Policy. Identification and evaluation of a number of opportunities were thence undertaken over 2016, the criteria being for properties that were conveniently located and suitable (or able to be made suitable) for graduate accommodation, as well as affordable and of potential to earn an income.

After a comprehensive process of financial modelling and feasibility studies, The Graduate Union purchased all 13 apartments of the top floor at 50 Barry Street in late November 2016 and began to undertake repairs, maintenance, painting, re-carpeting and restocking. All apartments are fully furnished with a kitchenette and an ensuite. A five minute walk away from the main Graduate House, Resident Members in this new wing will enjoy all the benefits that are currently available to all Residents. Housekeeping and meals will be available, as well as maintenance. Barry Street Residents can phone, email or come by the reception at 220 Leicester Street within operating hours, or call duty residents after hours.

When Barry Street Residents are checked-in they will first come to Leicester Street, as it is essential that new Resident Members are shown the main college and understand the value of residency and Membership at Graduate House, as well as that of socialising with the other Residents and participation in the activities run by the Graduate House Student Group (GHSG).

Although only recently listed online (late January 2017), the accommodation team has received numerous enquiries about the rooms, with all rooms renovated now sold.

Terrace room refurbishments The William Berry Wing of seven terraces (also known as the Gladstone Terraces) is dear to our history as a college.

Major maintenance and repair projects undertaken in this wing in recent years have included re-plastering and painting, electrical re-wiring, the installation of reverse cycle air conditioners in each accommodation room, the repair and waterproofing of the roofs (funded from the bequest of Mr Ron Davey), the installation of soundproofed windows in some rooms (funded by donations from the William Berry Post-Graduate College Trust) and the refurbishment of the Resident Members’ kitchen (funded from the bequest of Dr Phillip Law).

Following the successful 2015 annual appeal for furniture (beds, desks, chairs, shelves and wardrobes), the focus in 2016 was on refurbishments that would bring more colour, comfort and vibrancy to the residential rooms in this wing. Following a trial refurbishment of one room, new soft and hard furnishings were purchased in bulk in October and total room refurbishments were thence undertaken from November in a staged manner to ensure minimal impact on our high occupancy rates. By year-end, 26 of the 34 rooms targeted for this refurbishment had been completed, the eight remaining having been fully occupied and now scheduled for completion by mid-2017.

Feedback from our Resident Members has been very positive, many of them returning to light-filled, modern and more functional rooms. The newly installed wardrobes incorporate a new hand-basin and are more spacious, allowing for improved organisation, storage and ready access to belongings. New mattresses, desk chairs and tub chairs are firm, comfortable and stylish. The walls and ceilings have been plastered and freshly painted, and the new carpets are durable and contemporary.

It is acknowledged that there are plans afoot for a major redevelopment behind and above the current terrace wing. In the meantime, the competition is increasing with the standard being bright, colourful rooms with new furniture and fittings. Graduate House has great attributes that allow it to differentiate from its competitors. However, of note is that some providers in the area offer accommodation (with ensuites) that is cheaper and newer. In our Graduate House terrace residential rooms, there are no ensuites, residents currently sharing a bathroom down the corridor. Hence, attractiveness to the graduate market needed to have been increased by improved interior design, storage and contemporary modern furniture.

The number of graduates seeking college type accommodation is only to increase. The benefit of the different types of rooms, from shared bathroom rooms to private single or double, is

that there is a catering for all price points - from the lower in the terrace shared bathroom rooms to the private bathroom single/double rooms in the central wing and the comfort and space of the elegant apartments in our southern (Stella Langford) wing. Graduates moving in at one price point often shift within the college to a different price point (either increased or decreased). Demand for the terraces has been high because of the price point, and because some residents have no trouble sharing a bathroom and a particular love for the terrace room experience. With other options becoming available at a similar price and better standard, demand for improved standards with the interior design of these rooms has been increasing and will continue to increase. We feel confident that this refurbishment in the terrace rooms will enable us to continue offering a quality residential college experience that is appealing to this increasing market.

Reception desk The reception desk of Graduate House is open and staffed from 7.00AM to 7.00PM, Monday to Friday welcoming and serving up to 300 people per day (non-resident and Resident Members, people attending for meeting services, ‘walk-ins’, etc.) as well as all telephone, email and other enquiries. On entering the facility at 220 Leicester Street, the previous reception desk was to the left in the foyer of 222 Leicester Street, up steps and not immediately apparent. For those new to the facility, a welcoming person was thus not seen immediately. For those with frames, sticks, walkers and wheelchairs, accessibility to reception was even more limited. Staff members at reception could not see the front door directly (though it was viewed through security cameras), making it difficult to monitor who was entering and leaving the facility, and when taxis and airport transit buses had arrived. Relocation of reception into the foyer of the main entrance at 220 Leicester was deemed essential to give an instant and accessible point of welcome to all, as well as improved visibility of the street and of the dining room/lounge area.

The new reception desk was installed in November, just in time to welcome Members and guests to the Chair’s Cocktail Party on 2nd December, 2016. The counter replaced the wall that was previously the entry point to the offices, as well as the coffee station that was in the dining room. The reception area now has two workstations for the reception and office staff and a clear glass window on its southern side enabling visibility through to the corridor leading to the Stella Langford wing. With modish wood panelling along the eastern wall, reception is now obvious on entry to Graduate House at 220 Leicester Street, as well as to those entering from the car park, staff being able to welcome people coming into Graduate House from two directions.

The reception area is accessible to those with wheelchairs and walking aids. With increased numbers of new visitors to Graduate House, this installation has greatly improved the impression created and orientation when first entering, and allows our friendly smiling staff to provide a more immediate welcome, directions and other assistance. With reception also facing, in part, into the dining area, transactions can be handled while the bar/floor staff is setting up rooms in preparation for meetings and other functions in another part of the facility.

Stage 2 of this major project is a major revamp of the front entrance to Graduate House. As Members and regular visitors know, the main entry at 220 Leicester Street is inconspicuous and not sheltered. It is a busy thoroughfare and the inside carpets require regular maintenance because the ‘outside’ (e.g., rain, leaves, waste) is brought in easily. Members requiring taxis often have to wait outside on the pathway as it is difficult to see the arrival of taxis inside, with taxis sometimes leaving quite quickly if nobody is seen to be waiting.

The new front entrance installation proposed for early 2017 will enhance the visual aspects of the entrance and provide added protection from the elements for people waiting for transport, automated doors (rather than the currently heavy front door) better serving all users with luggage or mobility equipment. This major project will involve the construction of an elegant glass encased ‘airlock’ security entrance with two sets of sliding doors. It will be an attractive, functional, inviting, secure, sheltered entrance/exit and will provide greater street visibility for Graduate House, as well as improved security.

Major projects, repairs and maintenance The Building Services team presents reports regularly to this subcommittee, as well as to the Finance and Audit subcommittee and Council, on required major capital improvements. For each such request, a business case is prepared to show why the expenditure is justified and how the works undertaken will bring benefits to the Association. The projects are thence prioritised and put to Council with recommendations for budgeting and scheduling.

Of course, the unexpected happens. As some Members may recall, the plumbing in the central wing failed us at the end of 2015. Major plumbing repairs and replacements had thus to be undertaken over 2016. Additionally, three hot water units broke down and these needed to be replaced.

Graduate House is a very large facility requiring attention to repairs, replacements and maintenance. Constant work is being undertaken to keep the standards high in all common areas and accommodation rooms. The Graduate House Buildings Services team has thus developed a five-year rolling plan for this purpose. Additionally, and with the assistance of the Housekeeping team and the Accommodation Manager, a system for both cleaning and repairs/maintenance soon after a room is vacated has been adopted. Safety checks and audits are undertaken frequently through the year – e.g., for the lift, for the exhausts in the kitchen, for food safety, for the responsible serving of alcohol, for fire safety, etc. Further, the many different feedback mechanisms now available to Resident Members and staff means improved response times and quality control, all contributing to a more positive residential experience.

Finance and Audit Finance and Audit Subcommittee The Finance and Audit subcommittee supports the Council of The Graduate Union by monitoring and reviewing the policies and practices relating to the sourcing, management, control and auditing of the Association’s finances, as well as the management of financial risk.

More specifically, the Finance and Audit subcommittee is to: • monitor the continuing longer term financial viability of the Association; • advise Council on the protection of the Association’s charitable status; • monitor the management of the Association’s trust fund; • monitor the Association’s monthly financial reports, identifying any significant variations from budget and directing appropriate corrective action in collaboration with other relevant subcommittees; • monitor the management of financial risk, including the adequacy of internal systems of risk identification and risk treatment; • establish, review and recommend to the Council any changes necessary to the Association’s corporate risk framework; • review the draft annual budget and recommend the budget to Council for approval; • advise Council on any matter relating to present or future debt; • ensure statutory accounts comply with relevant reporting standards; • liaise with the external auditor throughout the period of the audit and facilitate finalisation of the Audit Report; and • review the annual external auditor’s report and ensure that management responds in a timely way to recommendations made therein.

Policy and Internal Financial Controls Policies developed and reviewed through the Finance and Audit subcommittee and adopted

by Council in 2016 included those on Major Capital Projects Management, Capital Expenditure, Debt Management and Depreciation Methodology.

The processes established over 2014 and 2015 for risk mitigation and management were refined in 2016. Risks continued to be identified and rated (for likelihood of occurrence and impact should the risk occur) under a number of risk categories. In 2016, the oversight of each risk category was assigned to one of the five subcommittees of Council according to the roles and responsibilities provided in the Regulations of the Association for each subcommittee.

Hence for the Finance and Audit subcommittee, oversight is now of the risk categories of market factors to income and expense exposure. For each of these categories a number of key risks have been defined, a commentary has been made to outline why it is considered

a risk (e.g., business interruption related to construction of the new Parkville underground station, higher employment and catering costs), and measures to monitor, prevent, mitigate and manage the risk have been outlined.

Financing As reported last year, a new five year loan facility was agreed with the National Australia Bank in March of 2015. Taking advantage of the low interest rate environment, this facility has three interest-only fixed components with terms to 2017, 2018 and 2020. The facility also includes a variable (floating) component which has provided The Graduate Union with the opportunity to reduce the principal and gain savings in interest costs (of $248,858 when compared to 2015 loan interest costs). It also provides flexibility to redraw additional loan funds to the facility limit. For example, this redraw has enabled funding of the installation of the new reception desk.

In November 2016 the purchase of the thirteen apartments on the seventh floor at 50 Barry Street, Carlton was financed under a new loan facility with the Bank of Australia. This facility is also split between two interest-only fixed terms (to 2019 and 2020) and a variable component.

The decision for this acquisition was underpinned by comprehensive financial modelling under different worst, likely and best case scenarios.

Auditor The Graduate Union recognised and thanked the retiring Auditor, Mr Anthony (Tony) Law, at the 2016 annual General Meeting, awarding Mr Law an Outstanding Service Award.

The Association is indebted to Mr Law for his many years of service and, on behalf of this subcommittee, I wish him all the very best and look forward to continuing to welcome him to Graduate House as a Member of the Association. Following the release of a tender and a detailed evaluation of submissions from a number of candidates, Mr Sam Claringbold of JTP Assurance was appointed as the auditor for the independent audit of the year ending 31st December, 2016.

Financial Performance For the year ending 31st December 2016, The Graduate Union achieved a surplus of $132,477.

Operating revenue in 2016 of $3.37 million (M) was $164,034 higher ($3.20M in 2015), with the dominant sources of income being Accommodation and Catering, increasing by 4.79% and 4.58% respectively. Total operating expenses of $3.408M were higher ($3.195M), with the increases in salaries and wages, catering expenses, professional fees, rates and government taxes and building depreciation being offset slightly by lower interest expenses and bank fees.

Cash flow from Operating and Investing Activities in 2016 was negative at $2,536,429 compared to the positive cash flow in 2015 of $113,923 due to 2016 expenditure on development and renovations and the purchase of 701-713, 50 Barry Street, Carlton. Cash and cash equivalents decreased to $177,132 from $298,303. The Association’s total Property, Plant and Equipment were valued at $29.960M in 2016, an increase in value of $2,591,413 compared to 2015 ($27.369M) due mainly to the acquisition in 2016 of 701-713, 50 Barry Street, Carlton.

ABN 55 610 664 963 Report on the Financial Report We have audited the accompanying financial report of The Graduate Union of the University of Melbourne Inc. (the Association), which comprises the statement of financial position as at 31 December 2016, the statement of comprehensive income, statement of changes in equity and statement of cash flows for the year then ended, notes comprising a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information, and the certification by members of the Council on the annual statements giving a true and fair view of the financial position and performance of the Association.

Council’s Responsibility for the Financial Report The Council of the Association is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards (including Australian Accounting Interpretations), the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012 and the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 (Vic) and for such internal control as the Council determines is necessary to enable the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

Auditor’s Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Those standards require that we comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial report is free from material misstatement.

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the Council’s preparation of the financial report that gives a true and fair view in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the Council, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report.

We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.

Opinion In our opinion the financial report of The Graduate Union of the University of Melbourne Inc. has been prepared in accordance with the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 (Vic) and division 60 of the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission Act 2012, including: a.
