Monthly Luncheon (Hybrid event)

with Victor Perton Wednesday, 2nd March

Is the “Lack of Optimism” a Global Risk? Join us once again, in a conversation with our members and guests, led by Victor Perton.

G U CO L L EG IATE

“A lack of optimism” could create a vicious cycle of disillusionment and social unrest”. Pretty dramatic — you could be forgiven for thinking it’s one of the rants of Victor Perton, radical optimist. However, it was upfront this year in Davos, in The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2022. Only 16% of the world’s business and government elites, the respondents to WEF’s 2022 Global Risks Perception Survey, “feel positive and optimistic about the outlook for the world.” Australia’s former Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson AO also shared some thoughts — “what I would say is that the thing that worries me is, in fact, a lack of optimism, excitement and a willingness to face challenges.” Victor is Chief Optimism Officer at the Melbourne-based Centre for Optimism. Formed as the offspring of The Australian Leadership Project, the Centre’s members are drawn from 56 countries. Victor’s life experience includes stints as Commissioner to the Americas, 18 years as a parliamentarian, practice as a barrister, mediator, arbitrator, businessman and board service. He was a Senior Engagement Adviser to the Australian G20 presidency focused on the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meetings, and the Brisbane G20 Leaders Summit described by the Prime Minister as “the most important gathering Australia has ever hosted”.
