Professor Jeffrey Rosenfeld Being a Brain Surgeon: what is it like?

In providing a profile of Professor Jeffrey Rosenfeld AM, OBE, CStJ it is difficult to be succinct. His career focus on neurosurgery began more than thirty years ago with training in Melbourne in the late 1970s and posts in Oxford, England and then Ohio, USA up until the late 1980s before his return home to Melbourne where he has since worked as a neurosurgeon and neuroscience researcher at the Royal Melbourne, the Royal Children’s, Prince Henry’s and the Alfred Hospitals, as well as at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Monash Medical Centre and both Melbourne and Monash Universities.

Amongst many other leadership, teaching and committee positions, he is currently Professor and Head, Department of Surgery, Central and Eastern Clinical School, Monash University, Professor/Director of Neurosurgery at the Alfred Hospital and Pro-Vice Chancellor Advancement (Major Projects) at Monash University.

As a brain surgeon Professor Rosenfeld specialises in cerebrovascular surgery (aneurysms and arterio-venous malformations), brain tumour and skull base surgery and minimal access and neuro-endoscopic surgery. As a brain scientist, his main research interests are traumatic brain injury and bionic vision. Professor David de Kretser AC The term “research� clearly implies an element of novelty and uncertainty but in some instances, the journey, as well as being fascinating, can require a willingness to examine the unexpected implications. There can be multiple facets to that journey, such as geographic locations and sometimes the need to change careers and acquire new skills. The scientific discoveries can be exciting as the potential applications emerge but they may also require examination of ethical issues.

Nevertheless, the intellectual rewards provide a sense of achievement especially if they improve the lives of people. Professor David de Kretser will talk to these ideas at the August Luncheon.

Professor de Kretser is a reproductive endocrinologist whose academic career at Monash University included appointments as Professor of Anatomy, the founding Director of the Monash Institute of Medical Research and Associate Dean for Biotechnology Development. In 2003, he was named a Sir John Monash Distinguished Professor. He served as the 28th Governor of Victoria from 2006 to 2011 and is a Companion of the Order of Australia. He resumed his research career at Monash University in April of 2011.

Annual General Meeting and Dinner Review Thursday, 29th May, 2014 The 102nd Annual General Meeting on the 29th May, 2014 was chaired by the President of The Graduate Union, Major General Professor Jeffrey Rosenfeld AM OBE. Prior to opening the meeting, the President announced the winners of the Graduate Union Scholarship, the Bursary Awards and the GU Blogging Competition.

Ms Chanchal Chandramouli was awarded the 2014 Graduate Union Research Scholarship for her work on Sex differences and the renin-angiotensin system in the diabetic heart and intends to use the scholarship to present her results at conferences in 2014. Rachel Davies, Dr Viet Nguyen, Thomas Morton and Tim Everson received Bursary Awards, and Candice Tan won The GU blogging competition, sponsored

by House of Australia International, for her blog entitled United Nations at her site The Ramblings of a Procrastinating Grad Student.

Highlights of the evening included the President’s address in which he outlined his delight at being part of a vibrant organisation that provided an ideal culture for post-graduate students and academics who visit Graduate House. Members also received reports from Vice-Chair of Council, Cheryl Kidston on Council’s work over 2013, from Council member, Mrs Vivienne Corcoran, on strategic planning and from the CEO/Head of College, Dr Kerry Bennett, on the major operational achievements for the year.

The Returning Officer, Mr Ron Ritchie, provided his Election Report and the President then congratulated and welcomed new and returning Council members - Mrs Jennifer Batrouney QC, Dr Phillip Cobbin and Mr Rhys Watson - who will each hold terms of office until 2017.

The Financial Report for the year ended 31st December, 2013 was adopted by Members after a presentation by the Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee, Mr Leo Santalucia; and following an address by the Chair of the Governance and Nominations Committee, Jennifer Batrouney QC, a special resolution to adopt the new Rules was also carried.

Ms Betty Keay was then conferred Honorary Life Membership of The Graduate Union in appreciation of her long service and ongoing support of our Association. In the citation delivered by Cr Kingsley Davis it was explained that Ms Keay had been contributing to The Graduate Union for more than thirty years, particularly with regards to the formation and organisation of the very successful Bridge group that meets every Wednesday evening at Graduate House.

Annual General Meeting and Dinner Review Thursday, 29th May, 2014 potatoes with green beans and cherry tomatoes. Dessert was a delicious flourless lemon and passionfruit cake. The meal was very well received, with many diners seeking to compliment the chefs on their outstanding effort.

The Hon David Harper AM QC then took to the podium to deliver his address on Sentencing and the Courts: Justice, the Media and Public Opinion and began with a quote from Sir Winston Churchill: “The mood and temper of the public in regard to the treatment of crime and criminals is one of the most unfailing tests of the civilisation of a country. A calm and dispassionate recognition of the rights of the accused against the State, a constant heartsearching by all charged with the duty of punishment, a desire and eagerness to rehabilitate in the world of industry all those who have paid their dues in the hard coinage of punishment, tireless effort towards the discovery of curative and regenerative processes, and an unfaltering faith that there is a treasure, if only you can find it, in the heart of every man and woman – these are the symbols which in the treatment of crime and criminals mark and measure the stored-up strength of a nation, and are the sign and proof of the living virtue in it.”

Powerful words, but as David said, words that received no audience in the corridors of the tabloid media or the halls of Parliament House. Perhaps it was best put by David when he said “calmness, dispassion, logic and rationality are wanderers in a foreign land when the administration of criminal justice is under consideration.” He was of course talking about the state of sentencing in Australia, and continued on to outline his views on the media’s impact on the public opinion of sentencing. He claimed that sentencing must be devoid of irrational or emotive reasoning, and instead be based upon evidence if it is ever to meet the standards set by Churchill.

David spoke on how the media is untroubled by the objective requirements of sentencing judges; their interest resting on emphasising that which aggravates and not that which mitigates. The media promotes the aggression necessary to promote public outrage if it ensures a ‘good story’, thus the public feels angry once a sentence that is less than their outrage is delivered, regardless of the mitigation circumstances that the judges have to consider. David claims that this act is not only an abuse of the media’s news disseminating function, but a means of searching for an audience and enhancing their political and commercial interests. This was best illustrated in the 2006 independent report by the Sentencing Advisory Council of Victoria that David presented titled ‘Myths and Misconceptions: Public Opinion versus Public Judgement about Sentencing.’

Annual General Meeting and Dinner Review Thursday, 29th May 2014 The report contained the following passage: “Newspaper portrayals of crime stories … report selectively, choosing stories, and aspects of stories, with the aim of entertaining more than informing. They tend to focus on unusual, dramatic and violent crime stories, in the process painting a picture of crime … that overestimates the prevalence of crime in general and of violent crime in particular. Thus public concerns about crime typically reflect crime depicted in the media, rather than trends in the actual crime rate.

The news media also provide little systemic information about the sentencing process or its underlying principles. … As people are overly influenced by single-case information, people falsely generalise that leniency characterises the entire sentencing process.”

The report also found that when the public is given more information about a case or a series of cases their level of punitiveness reduces significantly. This finding was evidenced further in a 2011 report entitled ‘Public Judgement on Sentencing: Final Results from the Tasmanian Jury Sentencing Study’ which was released by the then Federal Minister for Home Affairs and Justice, Brendan O’Conner. Undertaken by two eminent legal academics, Kate Warner and Dr Julia Davis, and considered the most important study done into attitudes on sentencing in Australia, this added to the proof that increased information results in reductions in the public’s punitiveness.

David claimed that newspapers who were not interested in tabloid sensationalism reported accurately and informatively on the launch and results of the Tasmanian study. However, it was not until six weeks after the release of the report that the Herald Sun reported briefly on the study’s results on page 38 of their tabloid newspaper. The ABC’s Media Watch program wrote a letter asking the Herald Sun’s editor whether the coverage on the study was adequate. The editor responded with a simple “yes” before citing statistics on sentencing that ignored the overarching results of the study. As if to add insult to injury, the Herald Sun held a government-funded survey with questions like “Do you think crime is increasing?” “Do you feel less secure?” and “Do you feel that there should be more police on the streets?” Though 82% of respondents to these leading questions believed crime to be rising, as David pointed out, this is simply not the case.

The Hon David Harper’s speech was well received, and was followed by a number of questions into such issues as parole and government involvement into the Herald Sun survey. In response to a light-hearted question from Cr Cobbin on whether or not tabloid newspapers will ever feel guilt, there was a general guffaw!

Mr David Pledger Collaborate or Perish: The End of The Specialist In 20th century Europe the word ‘collaborate’ was associated with the traitorous practice of ‘working with the enemy’. This century it has the more productive association of ‘working together’. As an artist whose practice is characterised by collaboration across art forms, sectors and oceans, David’s view is that those who have a deep understanding of collaboration as a principle of knowledge creation and communication can offer great benefits to future society.

New technologies have hastened the cross-pollination of thought and practice bringing hitherto discrete disciplines into the one space. Arts labels such as cross-art-form, crossdisciplinary and inter-disciplinary are mercurial attempts to name a certain kind of change that is taking place across all disciplines of which the arts is but one.

David began his talk by thanking his ‘in-laws’, Members David and Yvonne McCredie, who were in the audience, before talking a bit about his career history. He explained that he is an artist who began as an actor and became then a writer and then a director. He called his work cross-sector dramaturgy, defining this as a process of connecting artists across cultures and across art forms. He presented his mind as one that is appreciative, and explained why he likes particular art forms, such as theatre because of space, dance and involvement of the body, and such as the visual arts because of image. He felt that his profession ought to combine these elements.

David explained that he started as an economics and politics undergraduate at Monash University, but soon replaced economics with cinema studies. It was there that he began an acting course.

Later, he completed a Master of Arts in Asian Studies and graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA, Acting). He drew a laugh from the crowd as he claimed he still mentally identified as being a footballer but that this career pathway had been blocked after injury. He joked about the talk being all about football.

Through his engagement in filmmaking, David began experimenting with digital art and learnt to apply his artistic practices outside the field of art. If he has an idea, he explained that he looks for the art form that best allows him to explore that idea. Then, he will either learn that art form, or work with someone in the field who can assist in its proper expression.

Having lived and worked in Brussels (2009-2011), where he established the IETM-Australia Council for the Arts Collaboration Project, attended the Performing Arts Market Seoul in Korea on behalf of the Australia Council (2005-2007), and undertaken residencies in Karlsruhe, Germany (Centre for Art and Media) at the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, together with his collaborative and explorative mind set, David has learnt a number of languages to conversational level, such as French, Italian, Japanese and Korean. He explained that his uptake of languages was partially so he could collaborate with the right people to express his art properly and an important component of his active quest to learn how to collaborate. Giving the example of theatre, he noted that it is rare to make a performance with one person.

Theatre requires constant collaboration, from actors and backstage workers, to form a cohesive product. For David, collaboration is a behaviour that arose out of a process of testing his ideas in environments that maximise their value. He feels collaboration is how he operates through the world.

David claimed collaboration has come into a world of its own, thanks to globalisation. The whole world has come closer together through technology, travel and communication. As David put it, economic, social and civic structures have become inter-dependant. Globalisation has remapped the world. Technological innovation has brought about inter-connectivity that is unrivaled in humanity’s history. With every click, the web demonstrates the inter-connectivity of all things while at the same time it is a manifestation of our understanding of inter-connectivity - a reflective practice of human kind. Social media is perhaps the perfect example of something made collaboratively for collaborative use. David called it the cross pollination of thought and practice.

The talk then switched to a discussion on the nature of laboratories, many of which run in a specialised or focused manner but may well need to adjust significantly to become collaborative.

David even went so far as to say that the technological and economic shift brought about by globalisation demands that all disciplines interconnect and collaborate in order to evolve, especially in process development fields, or in the creation of ideas or products.

In speaking to the instinctive language of collaboration, David referred to his observation that Indigenous Australians play with a style suggestive of ‘eyes in the back of their head’ and gave a video demonstration of a person with a musical instrument sitting in front of a dancer and responding just to this instinct according to the dancer’s moves. Hence, when the dancer made a very sharp action, the musician instinctively made a corresponding sound; when the dancer made a swirling slow action, again, the instinctual music response was of a similar tone.

He concluded by explaining that the project he is working on currently, entitled ‘Running Man’, is a collaboration between experts in neurology, cardiology, exercise physiology, sport, medicine, state security, anthropology, divinity, live performance, interactive technology and even a neoconservative journalist who came to the rehearsal in a flak jacket (a form of protective body armour) because he wasn’t entirely convinced that the performers were not communists! Focusing on the research question of what happens in the brain when the body is subjected to the stress of physical endurance, Running Man includes such media as kinematic and electroencephalographic recordings, X-rays, videos of medical procedures, interviews and some running. David explained that such experiences helped to confirm his view that artists tend to work within a cell, however society has evolved into such a complex organism that it can no longer be served by artists being hermetically sealed from other parts of society. Such collaborations also help reaffirm his position that non-art collaborators should always be included in art projects and associated processes.

The Women’s Forum Some salient points from the Does Life Have a “Used By” Date? forum on the 21st May included: • individual choice for ‘end of life’ is vital, and decisions about advanced care directives should be made when one is comparatively healthy; • acceptance by friends and family of an approaching death is very important; • end of life medical expenses can be considerable, but these expenses should not be resented and no person should be made to feel as if they are a commodity; • it is rare to know when the last five years of life will be incurred, and it is thus difficult to make longer term financial planning for end of life; • to have made the decision for euthanasia can be liberating; • for many people, the availability of drugs brings peace of mind – the drugs may never be used; • agitation by community groups to have the legislation to make the decision easier may be required; and • doctors being delegated authority to give advice and to prescribe the drugs is preferable to amateur self-medication.

University Sector News The Supercell There are few forces in nature as powerful as a supercell. The combination of medium to high wind speed and directional wind shear at altitudes of 20,000 feet and below lead to what is known as the least common and the largest kind of thunderstorm. A supercell is not only huge, it can last for hours at a time and is thus also known as a quasi-semi-state storm. It comprises an internal mesocyclone - a deep updraft that is rotating constantly - which begins when horizontal wind shear sets air spinning, an updraft bends the spinning air upwards and the updraft then starts rotating with the spinning column of air. It also consists of strong downdrafts, an anvil where the updraft has collided with the lowest layer of the atmosphere, and wall and mammatus clouds. Supercells can produce dangerous conditions with hail, winds, tornadoes, flooding, cloudto-ground lightning and rain.

The sheer size of a supercell and their visual splendour make them a storm chaser favourite. The supercell shown in the photo was observed by a group known as ‘Basehunters’ who observe storms in the mid region of the United States where supercells are most common.

What’s in a Week?

This article is written on a Wednesday. The writer has two days before the weekend, a weekend of two days, and two more days of work before reaching the following Wednesday. The seven day week is a concept we are all fairly well acquainted with - after all, we have all grown up with it. In fact, the seven day week has been around since Babylonian times where the lunar month was split into four. It wasn’t until much later that the seven day Jewish week was adopted

by Christianity and introduced to Europe by the first Christian emperor of Rome, Constantine. As such, the week consisted of a six day working week followed by one day of holy rest on the Sabbath.

The two day weekend has a slightly more modern origin. Henry Ford had the brilliant idea to shut his factories down on Saturdays to promote recreational activities which he hoped would involve driving his new line of automobiles. He was rather right.

Is the seven day week relevant in contemporary times? Ben Schreckinger claims it is not. He argues that the working week was once necessary to accommodate the manual nature of business in times before the speed of the digital age was developed. Nowadays, however, the internet allows for direct exchanges of information and business to take place in seconds instead of days and the global workplace operates constantly, irrespective of the positions of the sun and the moon!

Divergence from the seven day week has been seen before. Stalin introduced a five and six day week to increase labour efficiency and the French Revolutionary calendar had ten day weeks called décades on its calendar. Schreckinger fails to provide an alternative to the seven day week but acknowledges potential for difficulty in attempting to change this widely accepted concept! Innovations Spray on Clothing It sounds like something out of a science fiction movie. The character gets out of bed, walks into their wardrobe and has their clothes sprayed onto their skin. The next scene shows them taking the material off, taking a quick shower and having evening wear sprayed on.

Well, it’s no longer such a far fetched idea. Fashion designer Manel Torres has not only invented a means of creating spray on clothing, he has started designing clothes using the material. The product of a ten year detour into chemistry, Manel has ended up naming the invention ‘Fabrican’.

The material is made by mixing tiny natural and synthetic fibres with liquid polymers inside an aerosol can. Once applied, the material dries instantly to become a non-woven fabric of cross-linked fibres which is like a second skin. The fabric can then be removed, washed or simply dissolved for re-use. Manel has high hopes for the material and its use also in medicine, environmental protection and even the automotive industry as he develops and refines his idea.

Solar Roadways Solar Roadways is an initiative that took the internet by storm. The concept is simple: hexagonal solar plates with a reinforced glass coating would replace our current roadways. The roads would become a major source of energy, LED lights would replace the paint on roadways and electricity could be transported through cable tunnels that run parallel to the roadways. As with all good inventions, however, there may be some issues with implementation.

The couple who invented the solar panels, Julie and Scott Brusaw in Idaho, claim that the coating for the hexagonal pieces is made of recycled glass and other materials. However, even if all of the plates could be made from recycled material, the cost to cover a road network the size of Australia would fall into the trillions; and this would be independent of the costs of metal and wiring required for the complex circuitry used in the plates and for the major work that would be required to replace above and below ground infrastructure.

The idea is certainly worth pursuing, but it is clear that installation, further testing and adoption by the public and governments need to be undertaken first at smaller scales (e.g., driveways, bike paths, patios, sidewalks, parking lots, playgrounds, etc.) with consideration of how to integrate the cells with existing infrastructure and to provide human resource training and technical support. Seen at Graduate House On Thursday, 29th May, The Graduate School of Education held a special Reunion Luncheon in the Johnston Library for the 1964 Special Education Graduates. Organised by Mr Nigel Lampert, fifteen graduates came from near and far, some from interstate, for this fifty year reunion.

Attendees chose from an à la carte menu that included, for entrée, seafood and antipasto platters and a roast duck risotto; for mains, beef and salmon fillets and grilled chicken; and for dessert, sticky date pudding, mini pavlovas and a selection of cheeses. A decorated cake was arranged for the occasion along with some souvenirs to mark the special anniversary.

Business Water Rebate We are pleased to announce that The Graduate Union has received a grant from City West Water for measures taken in water efficiency. The grant was awarded as a rebate for our purchase of the water-saving and energy-saving Washtech Recirculating Dishwasher that was installed in the new refurbished Resident Members’ kitchen.
