Welcome to the 2016 Graduate Union Calendar This calendar celebrates knowledge.

It focuses on some of the world's most accomplished innovators and their inventions.

As each new month arrives we hope that you enjoy learning a bit more about these people and objects and, of course, that you are inspired.

Members, please go to the page after December for a host of vouchers to be cut out and used to experience the benefits of The Graduate Union.

JANUARY

THE PRINTER Johannes Gutenberg In the middle of the 15th century, Johannes Gutenberg developed a set of movable blocks that broke down the alphabet into individual letters and punctuation stamps, cast from lead and tin. Using his own ink made from linseed and soot, Gutenberg also improved upon the commonly used waterbased inks of the time. Gutenberg's innovations did not end there, as he also created a mechanised machine that pressed the type blocks to paper, allowing for rapid mass production at a fraction of the cost of hand printing.

For the first time in history, books could now be produced more cheaply than conventional printing methods. This led to a mass dissemination of knowledge, increasing the development of ideas and changing society as we know it.

Gutenberg’s commercial invention has led to many subsequent printing technology revolutions.

The ultimate iteration being the 3D printer, which allows for the digital print of objects.

FEBRUARY

THE CLOCK Unknown No one quite knows who invented the first time-telling device. It is generally accepted however, that the earliest iterations were in use by 3500 BC, leaving plenty of time for humans to improve upon the concept. Simple ideas such as the hourglass led to more complex mechanical innovations such as the pocket watch.

The pocket watch has been around since 1530, but it was not until 1657 that the 'balance spring' was invented, greatly improving the accuracy of time-telling devices and making the pocket watch a more viable option.

By the late 1700s the pocket watch was given a minute hand, eventually leading to the creation of the wristwatch.

Modern versions of the clock are typically digital, either using a basic LCD display (black and white numbers and occasionally the date) or an LED screen (which provides the full spectrum of colour).

MARCH

BEER Unknown Beer finds its origin in Ancient Mesopatamia around 7000 BC. Mesopatamian women would brew the beer according to the instructions of the God of Beer Brewing, Ninkasi. The brewers occupation was held in high esteem, being the only profession which was dictated by a female deity.

Beer later became a huge success in medieval Europe, where nearly all countries eventually partook in the brewing process. Civil unrest sparked when hops was introduced to the recipe to flavour the beer.

This controversial introduction was taken so seriously that at one point the Duke of Bavaria, William IV, placed his accepted recipe for beer into legislation. It decreed that beer must be made of water, barley and hops, and no other ingredient. After the unification of Germany, yeast was added to the recipe.

Australia's first brewery was Tasmania's Cascade Brewery, which opened in 1824. Since then, Australia has become known for its unique range and type of beers.

APRIL

REFRIGERATION Jacob Perkins Prior to the invention of the refrigerator, rapid spoilage of food and bacterial infection was widespread, especially in summer months. At the time, cellars were the most effective way of preserving foods other then salting, smoking and drying. In the 1800s ice production and usage was the best form of keeping foods cold.

Enter Jacob Perkins, also known as the 'Godfather of the Refrigerator' who in 1835 patented the vaporcompression refrigeration cycle which he named an "[a]pparatus and means for producing ice, and in cooling fluids."

In the 1850s vapor-compression refrigeration and ammonia cooling systems were developed, but it was not until 1915 that electric refrigeration was made commercially viable. By 1950, nearly all urban homes owned a refrigerator, a trend that has continued into contemporary times.

MAY

THE CAMERA Ibn al-Haytham The 'Book of Optics' was the first publication detailing the process by which an image could be sharpened and viewed through small holes. The book was written

by Ibn al-Haytham in 1021 AD, who also invented the first iteration of the photocamera, the Camera Obscura.

Developing al-Haytham's ideas, NicĂŠphore NiĂŠpce applied the image sharpening process to his idea of image transfer. Using silver chloride on paper, he successfully created the first photograph.

Cameras became commercially available with the invention of the Kodak Camera in 1889. The relatively low price, availability of film and low processing difficulty were all due to the work of George Eastman, the founder of Kodak.

Modern iterations are almost always digital, but the resurgence in the popularity of 'retro' items has seen an increase in the use of analogue and Polaroid cameras.

JUNE

PAPER CURRENCY Unknown The first record of paper bank notes being exchanged was between the years of 618 and 907 AD in China's Tang Dynasty. The inscribed pieces of paper were primarily bills of credit and were used until 1455 when their rapid rise and sudden drop in value led to a severe financial crisis.

Europe first developed banknotes in the mid 17th century when goldsmiths would issue receipts that were payable to the bearer of the document instead of the depositor of gold. This utility spread like wildfire throughout Europe until the permanent release of banknotes in 1695.

Australia's first banknotes in 1966 consisted of $1, $2, $10 and $20 notes. By 1988 the $5 and $50 notes had been introduced, and Australia was well on its way to developing polymer notes to replace the paper currency. These polymer notes are now the only foldable currency in Australia.

JULY

CCT V HOME SECURITY Marie Van Brittan Brown A little frustrated by poor police response times in her neighbourhood, Marie Van Brittan Brown created a home security system to protect herself and her neighbours. The system consisted of a camera that moved vertically along four holes, which were drilled into the front door. The camera was connected to a closed circuit television system so that the homeowner could see who was knocking from the comfort of their living room.

Developments in this form of closed circuit systems have led to massive improvements in image resolution and image storage capacity.

More recently, CCTV home security cameras are being developed with wireless capability and motion sensors. The wireless capability allows homeowners to check footage from anywhere with a wireless connection, even from their mobile phones.

Motion sensors operate by only recording when the sensor registers movement.

AUGUST

THE DISHWASHER Josephine Cochrane Upon noticing the effort her house attendants put into cleaning her cutlery, Josephine Cochrane empathetically stated: "If nobody else is going to invent a dishwashing machine, I'll do it myself."

And she did. After presenting the device at the 1893 World's Columbian Fair in Chicago, dishwashers took America - and later the world - by storm. Though successful in the corporate world, the availability of Cochrane's device was somewhat limiting for households which lacked either the room or hot water plumbing.

Through increased availability of hot water, and a significant reduction in the size of dishwashing machines, by 1950 many households sported an electric dishwasher.

Nowadays dishwashing technology is aimed at reducing both energy and water consumption.

SEPTEMBER

THE LIGHTBULB Humphrey Davy The first electric light was developed by Humphrey Davy in 1802. Known as the Arc Lamp, Davy's light involved connecting wires to a battery and a piece of exposed carbon. Unfortunately, Davy's light was too bright and could not remain active for long periods of time.

Though there were many iterations of Davy's light, they all faced production issues, particularly that of cost. It was not until Thomas Edison's patented 'first lightbulb' that the lightbulb became commercially viable. Edison and his team used a carbonised bamboo filament to ensure the light could remain active for around 1,200 hours.

Modern lights have a number of different light mechanics, but still use the basic principles developed

by Davy all those years ago. The largest challenge of modern lightbulb technology is switching to lightbulbs that reduce carbon emissions but remain affordable.

OCTOBER

SATELLITES Sergei Korolev On October 4th 1957, the Soviet Union launched the successful satellite, Sputnik 1. The success of the little Sputnik satellite was unanticipated and led to the famous Space Race between the Soviet Union and America.

Tiros-1 took satellites to the next level, as it was the first orbital satellite of Earth. Tiros' main function was to record weather data. With the capacity and technology to orbit the Earth, the LANDSAT satellite became the first orbital surveillance device, and with IKONOS, a later iteration, orbital observation had the capacity to register any metre of land on Earth.

Perhaps humanity's greatest achievement in satellite technology has been the International Space Station. The ISS' first component launched in 1998 and has been continuously upgraded since then to the most advanced research centre of technology off earth.

NOVEMBER

THE PEN Unknown There is evidence of pen-like objects being used as early as 3000 BC in Egypt. These consisted of a piece of reed or bamboo with a slit at the end to hold ink to the tip. Feather and bone quills used a similar means of transferring ink to paper.

The invention of the nib allowed for more precise, elegant writing, but it was not until the mid 17th century that the fountain pen had been developed. There is much debate about the original inventor of the fountain pen, but M. Klein and Henry W. Wynne held the first patent for the innovation in 1867.

The ballpoint pen came to fulfill the role of a more reliable pen. The older fountain pens had corrosive ink and failed to properly grasp the role air pressure plays in delivering ink to paper. After much refinement, ballpoint pens became the most used pen.

DECEMBER

DATA STORAGE Herman Hollerith

Punch cards themselves have existed as a means of data collection since 1725, but it was Herman Hollerith who developed punch card technology to datarecording status. Sheets of card had holes placed in such a way that a machine could register the lack of card, and record a corresponding digit within a computing machine.

Magnetic tape was developed in 1951 and significantly advanced data storage capability, as it allowed the data of hundreds of punch cards to be recorded in a single reel.

Hard drives were soon developed in 1956, with the first being the size of a small room. The amount of data hard drives could store increased as their size decreased, leading to laptops, smart phones and other computing devices. Today, data is stored in cloud storage - physical servers in disparate locations that people send/recieve information to/from computing devices.
