As each new month arrives we hope that you enjoy learning a bit more about these unique universities and, of course, that you have the opportunity to visit them.

Members, please go to the page after December for a host of vouchers to be cut out and used to experience the benefits of The Graduate Union.

The University of Cambridge The University of Cambridge is known as one of the most famous and prestigious universities in the world. Its rich history and inspiring architecture are the perfect environment for tertiary education.

Famous for its grand residential colleges and college tutors, many of the University’s customs and unusual terminology can be traced to roots in the early years of its establishment in the 1200s and are seen in such contemporary practices as High Table, the Annual Boat Race and graduation ceremonies in Latin.

University of Bologna In the nineteenth century a committee of historians, led by Giosuè Carducci, attributed the birth of the University of Bologna to the year 1088.

Standing as one of the oldest universities in the world, and with a long history in the sciences and humanities, its modern direction began shaping when masters of grammar, rhetoric and logic began to devote themselves to the discipline of law in the 12th Century.

The City of Bologna is located in the mid-north of Italy in the Emilia Romagna region, and is famous for its iconic Due Torri (two towers) and the central plaza, Piazza Maggiore.

Al-Azhar University Al-Azhar University is the second oldest degree-granting institute in the world and the centre for Arabic literature and Sunni Islamic learning. It is located in Egypt’s capital city, Cairo, which is known for Tahrir Square and the famous Egyptian Museum.

The curriculum of this ancient university includes the Quranic sciences and traditions of the Prophet Muhammad while also including the modern sciences and the humanities.

Lomonosov Moscow State University Moscow State University is one of the most prestigious universities in Russia. Its impressive main building is thought to be the largest educational structure in the world and becomes only more impressive at night, when the entire facility lights up.

Founded in 1755, and later renamed Lomonosov Moscow State University after its founder, Mikhail Lomonosov, in 1940, this grand tertiary education institute celebrated 250 years as a university in 2005.

Moscow is located in the Central Federal District of European Russia and is home to St. Basil’s Cathedral and the Spasskaya Clock Tower.

Peking University Founded in 1898, and originally known as the Imperial University of Peking, the university adopted its present name in 1912. It was the first national university covering a comprehensive range of recognised disciplines in China, and has since become a leading provider of higher education in Asia.

Peking University has played an essential and pioneering role in China’s modernisation. True to traditions of patriotism, progress, democracy and science, it has introduced a significant number of comprehensive programmes to improve education standards.

The city of Peking is better known as Beijing, the capital of the People’s Republic of China and one of the most populous cities in the world.

Pohang University of Science and Technology (S Founded in 1986, Pohang University of Science and Technology is the first research-oriented university established in Korea and is known for its capacity to form strong, enduring and productive alliances between academia, industry and research centres.

Pohang University of Science and Technology has over 3,000 students, 800 researchers and 240 faculty members, together with world class facilities.

It is located on 165 hectares of land on the south-eastern coast of South Korea in the North Gyeongsang province, an area known for the Bogyeongsa Buddhist Temple and its annual fireworks festival on Bukbu Beach.

Anna University Anna University, established in 1978, offers tertiary education in engineering, information technology and applied science, together with a focus on cooperation between academic and industrial communities.

Formed through the integration of two major technical institutions in the city of Madras, the University’s campus grounds now extend over 100 hectares along the Adyar River, with neighbours such as the Raj Bhavan, a Government House of India. A second campus in Chrompet, the Madras Institute of Technology, is on 20 hectares of land.

Madras is known as Chennai in India, and is the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

It is located on the Coromandel Coast and is the largest industrial, commercial, economic and cultural centre in South India.

The National University of Singapore The National University of Singapore was founded in 1905. It is the oldest higher learning institute in the country, as well as the largest in terms of student enrolment numbers and the curriculum offered.

A research university, it is known as a flagship for global approaches to tertiary education and research.

Formed through a merger between the University of Singapore and Nanyang University in 1980, today the university has 16 faculties and schools across three campuses and provides a broad-based curriculum with multidisciplinary and cross-faculty courses.

Harvard University (United States) Harvard University was established in 1636 by vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

It is named after its first benefactor, the generous minister John Harvard, who bequeathed his estate to the university upon his death in 1638.

Since its beginning as a single class of nine students and one master, it has grown to twelve degree granting schools, with an enrolment of more than 20,000 degree candidates at all levels.

As the oldest university in the United States of America, Harvard University is renowned for its excellent academic facilities and famous alumni.

It is located in Boston, the capital and largest city in the state of Massachusetts known for its iconic Back Bay skyline, Fenway Park and the Massachusetts State House.

The University of Chile Founded on the 19th of November, 1842, the University is the oldest higher education institution in Chile and offers a broad-based tertiary learning experience in all areas of knowledge and culture.

The University is located in Chile’s capital city, Santiago, and has centres in other parts of the country. Sandiago itself is located in the Central Valley and is famous for its view of the nearby Andean Peaks and its exciting culinary culture.

University of Al-Karaouine The University of Al-Karaouine was first established as a mosque in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri, and is considered the oldest continuously-operating degree granting university in the world.

Located in the heart of Fes, Morocco, it became a leading university in the natural science fields. It wasn’t until 1957 that mathematics, physics, chemistry and foreign languages were added to the curriculum.

Fes is the capital of the Moroccan state of Fés-Boulemane and is the third largest city of Morocco. The city is the home of the oldest continuously functioning madrasa (a college for Islamic learning) in the world, and is known as “the Athens of Africa”.

The University of Cape Town Founded in 1829 as the South African College, a high school for boys, the University of Cape Town’s small tertiary education facility grew substantially following the gold and diamond rush in the 1880s.

The University of Cape Town is known for its continuous renewal processes which are designed to redress past injustices, promote equal opportunity for all, reflect in the profile of its students and staff the demographics of South Africa, and safeguard human rights.
