ABSTRACT
This paper explores the significance of the shipping industry in Greece and its historical evolution over time. Particular emphasis is placed on the definition and use of pleasure craft (yachts), as well as the process of converting vessels from different categories into recreational yachts. Furthermore, specific case studies of prominent Greek shipowners and the iconic vessels belonging to their families are examined. Special reference is made to the interior design characteristics of each vessel and how these reflect the aesthetics, technological progress, and requirements of their respective eras. The primary objective of this study is to investigate how ship conversions influence the layout, functionality, and character of the interior space. Through the analysis of selected examples, it is examined how the original structure and purpose of a vessel are adapted to meet the demands of leisure, leading to significant changes in interior configuration, equipment, and material selection. The study also explores the integration of ergonomics, aesthetic consistency, and maritime tradition in creating spaces of functional harmony and distinct style. Ultimately, this analysis aims to highlight that conversion processes are not merely technical interventions, but strategic design choices that reflect the evolving relationship between the shipping industry and luxury yachting.
