ABSTRACT
In the modern era of the dominance of the internet and mass media, spatial experience and perception is undermined by intangible information and the barrage of images. The fluidity in which we live makes the need to develop physical and sometimes spiritual relationships with the natural and built environment more necessary than ever.
The limited time of existence of an ephemeral construction creates a particular condition that may be related to the experience of space. Precisely because an ephemeral construction has an expiration date, it inevitably evokes the feeling that it is worth paying attention to, visiting and participating in the spatial experience that the ephemeral construction evokes (or promises).
Ephemeral architecture, when created within a cultural context, is an opportunity to experience spaces and emotions that may remain in memory longer than the construction itself in space. Assuming that the visit to a cultural event is made with a desire to explore and participate in a collective experience, ephemeral architecture can also take on an educational character since learning and assimilation of elements is much more pleasant and almost unconscious when pressure and stress are absent.
Starting from a brief review of the first pavilions presented in the context of the International Exhibitions, but also taking as a reference the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, a world-renowned institution that has been operating since 2000 in London, it will be examined to what extent ephemeral architecture can function as a field of experimentation, contributing new data to architectural practice and how something ephemeral can function, can take on an educational character by being a source of knowledge for the public.
Through the contributions of the last few years to Serpentine, those of the architects Francis Kéré, Frida Escobedo, Junya Ishigami and Sumayya Vally, the exhibition will highlight how and in what ways ephemeral architecture projects the particular character of its place of origin. The integration of local architectural elements in ephemeral constructions, achieved through the transmission of local architectural expressions, is brought back to the fore as a critical look at an international style that tends to prevail.
