January 6 (Friday), The Epiphany Holy Eucharist and Burning of the Greens, 6 p.m. The 12 days of Christmas end by celebrating the manifestation of Christ and his divinity and the coming of the Magi. All are invited to Grace-St. Luke’s Church for a Festival Holy Eucharist and Burning of the Greens with homily and music at 6 p.m. Save your Advent and Christmas wreaths and garland to add to the outdoor fire at the end of the service.

January 8, First Sunday after the Epiphany: The Baptism of Our Lord Jesus Christ and The Bishop’s Annual Visitation Conversation with the Bishop, 9:15–9:45 a.m. Join the Rt. Rev. Phoebe A. Roaf for a meaningful conversation on the day when candidates for baptism, confirmation, reception, and reaffirmation will be presented. This is an annual occasion to exchange questions and answers and to reflect on the shared work of the Diocese of West Tennessee, The Episcopal Church, The Anglican Communion, and Grace-St. Luke’s Parish. Bishop Phoebe also will preach at 8 and 10:30 a.m. and with the candidates be honored with a festive reception after the 10:30 liturgy in Trezevant Hall.

January 15, The Second Sunday after the Epiphany Reflecting on the Christian Ministry of Martin Luther King Jr., 9:15–10:15 a.m. Come to Trezevant Hall for a presentation and discussion about Dr. King’s commitment to both human and civil rights. Human rights are inherent to all human beings. Civil rights are personal rights guaranteed and protected by the U.S. Constitution and federal laws enacted by Congress. In Jesus, there is no discrimination, which is why Dr. King and countless others walked by faith and not by sight.

Social Justice Afternoon Tour with Memphis Heritage Tours, 1–4 p.m. After lunchtime, observe the Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend by joining GSL parishioners and guests in learning about and visiting Memphis lynching sites. Dr. Elaine Turner will shepherd this sacred time together.

Solemn Choral Evensong Observing the Feast of Martin Luther King Jr., 5 p.m. One of the ancient and modern aspects of the Anglican/Episcopal tradition is the beautiful service of Choral Evensong (sung Evening Prayer). This commemorative contemplative liturgy led by a member of the clergy and the choir, with hymns sung by the congregation, is enhanced with the burning of incense and includes three lessons appointed for the feast day (Psalm 77:11-20, Exodus 3:7-12, Luke 6:27-36).

January 16, Monday, The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Eucharist, 11:30 a.m. Holy Eucharist with Music, 11:30 a.m. at GSL. A celebration of the Holy Eucharist is one of the most worthwhile ways for Christians to pause on this day to pray, meditate on the appointed lessons, sing hymns, experience powerful music, and gather around God’s Table to share the “holiest of meals.” GSL offers this spiritual practice of our tradition to the Memphis community as one of the sorts of occasions central to the life of Dr. King and his dream for the human family. January 22, The Third Sunday after the Epiphany Making Sacred Space with Architect Jim Williamson, 9:15–10:15 a.m. Why do some places have a sense of the sacred? How and under what circumstances can our experience of architecture open us to an enhanced awareness of God? James Williamson is a retired architect and professor of architecture at the University of Memphis. During some 30 years of professional practice, Jim received over 30 architectural design awards and saw his work published internationally. His work includes the design of St. George’s, Germantown; renovation of Grace-St. Luke’s nave; St. John’s Episcopal Parish Life Center; and the renovation of Immaculate Conception Cathedral—as well as churches in New York, Kentucky, and East Tennessee.

Join Shari Ray as she reflects on how practicing humility can transform our lives: Humility in parenting and grandparenting, humility in personal relationships, humility in forgiveness, humility in loving our enemies. Every day our lives can be made better by embracing humility and modeling it to our children, grandchildren, godchildren, and the younger generations around us. Shari, aside from being a parent and grandparent, is a seasoned professional who has spent her career working with children and their parents. She recently published a new book, Surprised by Imperfection: Essays and Stories on Wonder.

Location: Peete Room February 12, The Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany Being An Episcopalian: The Beauty and Challenge of Faith in the Home with Fathers Jesse Abell and Ollie Rencher, 9:15–10:15 a.m. Our Episcopal tradition upholds the triad of scripture, tradition, and reason as a “middle way” approach to Christianity. We follow a liturgical (“church year”) calendar to journey with Christ and order our lives.

We worship through ancient and modern customs with a lot of moving parts that many call “strange,” and the congregational participation experience is more than some other traditions. Indeed, we are unique! Often it is both said and true that there is beauty and challenge in practicing the “faith of the church” in the home—and everywhere. Join members of the parish clergy for a deep dive into this reality and bring all questions!

Every February, the Episcopal Church commemorates Absalom Jones, an 18th century African-American abolitionist and the first black Episcopal priest. Location: Peete Room March 5, The Second Sunday in Lent Reclaiming Paul from Misconceptions with Dr. Corey Latta, 9:15–10:15 a.m. The Apostle Paul often doesn’t have a huge fan base among Episcopalians or members of mainline churches, and yet more recent scholarship suggests that he might have gotten a bad reputation unnecessarily. Join a conversation with Corey Latta, PhD, as we push aside misconceptions to get a better look at what Paul really taught. Dr. Latta has graduate degrees in New Testament studies, English literature, and counseling. He’s taught in higher education and in the church on topics ranging from C. S. Lewis to the theology of Paul to emotional health and relationships in the church.

March 12, The Third Sunday in Lent No Forum or Bible Study: Community Fellowship March 19, The Fourth Sunday in Lent Music for All Ages with Stephen Lee of Memphis Jazz Workshop, 9:15–10:15 a.m. Founded in 2016 by Memphis native and accomplished jazz musician Stephen Lee, Memphis Jazz Workshop (MJW) provides music initiatives and unparalleled guidance for middle and high school students instructed by a collection of well-versed and experienced teachers from diverse music backgrounds. MJW is one of the only workshops in the region offering jazz-focused instruction at a high-level and frequency to nurture talented young people from area schools. All ages are invited to this event where Lee and MJW affiliates will play and share about transformational impacts of discipline, work ethic, music education, and mastery happening in the lives of young people and the community.

Location: Peete Room March 26, The Fifth Sunday in Lent Deepening Our Understanding of Beloved Community, 9:15–10:15 a.m. Come and join in the conversation as the Rev. Laura F. Gettys and several GSL members reflect on the unfolding work being done by a growing group of members to learn more about the parish’s history as it relates to race, reconciliation, and healing. The Episcopal Church’s racial reconciliation, healing, and justice work is guided by the long-term commitment to a program called “Becoming Beloved Community” (episcopalchurch.org/beloved-community), organized around the four quadrants of the labyrinth: truth-telling, proclamation, formation, and justice. Each represents a commitment that is vital to lasting change within us, our faith communities, our communities, and society at large.

Location: Peete Room April 2, Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday Palm-Cross Making in Trezevant Hall, 9:15–10:15 a.m. Join fellow parishioners of all ages for a time of learning about the tradition of making palm crosses. Tables will be set up with workstations, supplies, and instructors to lead participants through this annual custom of many Christian traditions. All are welcome for what always is an enjoyable community experience.

April 16, The Second Sunday of Easter and Youth Sunday Resurrection, God, and the Believers in Rome according to Paul with Dr. Mitzi Minor, Week One, 9:15–10:15 a.m. Longtime GSL friend and a biblical scholar, Dr. Minor will offer a two-week presentation and conversation based on the letter to the Romans in which St. Paul discusses what resurrection says about God and about how we live as children of such a God. Minor is the Mary Magdalene Professor of New Testament at Memphis Theological Seminary (MTS), where she joined the faculty in 1993, and holds a Ph.D. and M.Div from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and a B.A. from Auburn University.

April 30, The Fourth Sunday of Easter Holding on to Hope with the Rev. Ollie V. Rencher, 9:15–10:15 a.m. Christian adults, youth, and children are called to embrace hope in all things and times. In his 2020 book, Love Is The Way: Holding on to Hope in Troubling Times, Episcopal Presiding Bishop Michael Curry offers that love is the way to discover deep reservoirs of hope and resilience, simple wisdom, the discipline of nonviolence, and unshakable regard for human dignity. What better teaching can there be in Eastertide for all ages especially children “growing up in an unsteady and confusing world”? Join Father Ollie Rencher and guests including a child psychologist for a conversation that intends to empower participants with practical tools for holding on to hope.

Location: Peete Room May 7, The Fifth Sunday of Easter Church Health Partnering with Memphis and the GSL Food Pantry with Dr. Scott Morris, 9:15–10:15 a.m. Celebrating 35 years (September 2022) of caring for one another, Church Health provides medical services through partnerships with healthcare providers, diagnostic centers, hospitals, and nutrition experts. Last year, the GSL Food Pantry (founded 1975) started an evolving partnership with Church Health to provide meals that promote health and prevent illness to patrons through frozen healthy meals prepared by a growing number of GSL cooking teams. Join GSL friend Scott Morris, MD, M.Div., and other Church Health team members for a conversation to learn more about the power of God’s work being done throughout our community.

Location: Peete Room May 14, The Sixth Sunday of Easter The Challenges and Joys of Intergenerational Ministry with Anthony Calzia, 9:15–10:15 a.m. The church has gone through many seasons in its long life. One recent season has seen a growing gap between the generations. Terms like Gen X, Gen Z, the Baby Boomers and Millennials have become common, but what does the generational gap mean for parish life and spiritual formation? There is a growing energy around an old idea: intergenerational ministry! Research and experience suggest one productive way forward is to structure parish life around bringing the church’s youngest, oldest, and everyone in between together for meals, play, study, and worship. Join our Director of Children and Family Ministry Anthony Calzia for an introduction and some practical possibilities for GSL in the years to come!

Location: Peete Room May 21, The Seventh Sunday of Easter The Spiritual Meaning and Power of Shalom with Rabbi Micah Greenstein, 9:15–10:15 a.m. What does the Hebrew word “shalom” or “peace” mean at a deeper level? Offered for centuries in a myriad of ways from one to another including during the worship services of many faiths, this substantial word conveys a spiritual meaning and power worth unpacking. For the last Spring 2023 Sunday forum, join Rabbi Micah in Trezevant Hall for a presentation and conversation. Rabbi Micah serves as Senior Rabbi at Temple Israel, a Reform congregation and spiritual home for more than half of the affiliated Jewish community in Memphis and the Mid-South that holds a pre-eminent role in Reform Judaism nationwide.

Eastertide Retreat Date: Saturday, April 15 | Registration Requested by April 9 Time: 9 a.m.–12 p.m.

Location: Barth House Join the Barth House Episcopal Center, Grace-St. Luke’s Church, and Holy Trinity, Memphis, for some quiet time, guided meditation, and contemplative music, as we celebrate the new and unending life found in the wake of Jesus’ Resurrection. Amid the fullness and noise of life, this offering provides sacred time to gather for opportunities to walk and explore sacred surroundings. Nursery The Nursery is open every Sunday from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. and for other events as needed for all children, infants to 4 years old. We have wonderful, qualified Nursery Staff and Nursery Guild members who are excited to care for your children. You can find more about them on our website at gracestlukes.org/nursery.

Children’s Formation Sunday School for children takes place from 9:15–10:15 a.m. every Sunday between January 8 to May 21. Classes are split by grade level groupings; Pre-K through 1st grade meets in the Green Room while 2nd through 5th grade meets in the Purple Room downstairs.

The younger group will continue learning the church’s sacred stories through a combination of Godly Play (GP) and Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS). Both GP and CGS are Montessori-based curriculums that tell the church’s sacred stories. They focus on biblical knowledge, the liturgical calendar of the Christian church and the liturgy and Sacraments of the Episcopal Church.

The older group, which is named Crossings, will continue using the Weaving God’s Promises curriculum, developed for Episcopal congregations by Morehouse Publications. The program follows the three-year cycle of readings used in church and teaches Christian history and beliefs through fun and purposeful activities.

Children’s Chapel During the first part of the 10:30 a.m. service, children are invited to take part in our Children’s Chapel. Children’s Chapel is a time for the children to gather, read/hear one of the lectionary readings for the day, sing and creatively pray together. We follow the same Order of Service from the Book of Common Prayer, but it is modified to help children understand and experience the Liturgy of the Word at their developmental level. We always return to the service before communion, usually at the Peace.

Parents Connect This Spring, we resume Parents Connect gatherings as a time for parents of young children to gather, get to know each other and find compassionate connection together. You can find more information regarding Parents Connect at gracestlukes.org/parentsconnect.

Our Sunday Formation will draw upon multiple sources this year to create a living curriculum that adapts to the liturgical season, current events, and interest of our youth community. 6th-8th Grade: Yellow Room 9th-12th Grade: Red Room EYC. Our Episcopal Youth Community gathers on Sunday evenings for games, fellowship, community engagement and building lifelong friendships. Here we hope to deepen our understanding of Episcopal values, history, and beliefs while having fun every step of the way. Our activities and meeting locations often vary, so keep an eye out for our weekly emails.

Sunday Evenings: Meeting in the Red Room High School: 4–5 p.m.

Middle School: 5–6 p.m.

Lenten Wednesdays at GSL. Join us for Wednesday evenings in Lent for intergenerational gathering and time for youth to work in groups on an EYC Lenten project, with the intention of giving back to the 901 community. From 5:30–7:15 p.m., with dinner and fellowship before.

Diocesan Youth Events. This spring we look forward to some time spent with youth from across the Diocese of West Tennessee, for some reimagined DIO EYC activities.

Youth Sunday. One of the most beloved Sundays of the year, where we honor the wonderful youth of GSL, will be here before you know it. Be sure to mark your calendar for April 16 as Youth Sunday, when youth will help lead the 10:30 service.

High School Coffee Hours. All 9th–12th graders are invited to Tuesday morning coffee hours at Rambling Joe’s from 7:15–7:45 a.m. Come start your morning with breakfast, community, and prayer.

Biscuits & Bible is open to all 6th-8th graders and meets Wednesday mornings in the Red Room from 7–7:45 a.m. A great midweek opportunity to start your day with breakfast, Highs and Lows, and some morning prayer.

We offer opportunities for young adults who are out of high school and navigating that strange “in-between time” in life during college, 20s... and wherever you may find yourself in life if you feel like a “young adult”! We invite all those who are seeking to engage with fellow Episcopalians for gatherings surrounding fellowship, exploring our community, and continuing our spiritual journeys in new and adventurous ways. Join Amzie Williams for regular opportunities to meet and connect with fellow GSL young adults both at GSL and around Memphis.

Weekend Outings. On the 1st Sunday each month, all young adults are invited to group weekend outings all across the 901! From meals in our own backyards, kayaking at Tom Lee Park, Yoga at the Shell, or attending a special worship service together at Barth House, we seek to unite and explore Memphis in joyous community. For event details, be sure to keep an eye out for Amzie’s email and the GSL eNews at the start of each month.

Cooking Group. Our young adult team continues to take part in the cooking program that GSL does in partnership with Church Health to provide good, nutritious meals for those who are food insecure. All helping hands are welcome.

Thursday Trivia. Meet Amzie at Young Avenue Deli in Midtown every 2nd Thursday for food and trivia. We gather at 5:45 p.m. and trivia starts at 6 p.m. Friends are welcome! Join us for trivia, food, and fun!

Young Adult Book Group. Our young adult book group continues into the spring. We are continually searching for great reads to share with each other. If you’re interested, just shoot Amzie an email at awilliams@gracestlukes.org.

Diocesan Young Adult Events. Meet fellow Episcopalians from across Memphis. Organized by the Rev. Dr. Noah Campbell and often hosted at the Barth House, GSL will be present and supporting all of our Diocesan young adult events, so feel free to join any that pique your interest! Experience worship in Word and Sacrament in a quiet space illuminated by candles, outside and dimmed overhead lights, silence, and excellent instrumental music of cello, flute, classical guitar, piano, jazz, and bass offered on a rotating basis by guest and parish musicians.

• Choral Evensong: Third Sundays, January 15, February 19, March 19, and May 21, 5 p.m. One of the ancient and modern aspects of the Anglican/Episcopal tradition is the beautiful service of Choral Evensong (sung Evening Prayer). This contemplative liturgy is led by a member of the clergy and the choir with hymns sung by the congregation and enhanced with incense. Each includes the Magnificat (Song of Mary), Nunc Dimittis (Song of Simeon), and an anthem.
