God’s Phenomenal Woman This being Women’s History Month, I thought it fitting to remind women that…”You Matter”! Sometimes life gets in the way and causes us to lose sight of what really matters and we need to remind ourselves just how much we matter to God….and sometimes circumstances and difficulties can make it hard to hold on to the fact that we do matter to God….that is when we need to feed our faith and hold on to our hope so we can be empowered to carry out God’s purpose for our life. Just two words “You Matter”. I believe that those two words mean a few things….one we all have a purpose, two we all fit into God’s plan, and three God is always working His plan. When I look back over my life, I realize that it is not man who qualifies you it is God, He will equip and put in you just what you need to do what He has called you to do, and you will be blown away at what God can do, He can do exceeding abundantly, above all that you can ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). Of course it has not been easy, I have had my share of challenges, disappointments, heartache, and setbacks, and at times I have even wanted to quit…but I am in awe of what God has done to show me that I matter to Him and His plan and purpose for His people; this plan was never about me, I have discovered we are just vessels that God uses to accomplish His will. No matter where you are at this point in your life, no matter how young or how old, there has always been a purpose and plan for your life that goes hand in hand with God’s will for His people. I think it is very important that you know YOU Matter to God even if you have to remind yourself every day and say it, “I matter to God and I fit into His plan.” There is one provision and that is you have to be willing to let God use you. God can use anyone, it doesn’t matter if you have multiple degrees or no degrees,

e i k c a J

EPPS

it doesn’t matter if you are single, married, divorced, a single parent, a grandmother, a student, and the list goes on and on…. what does matter is your willingness to serve Him so that He gets the glory out of your life. God’s purpose and plan is always for Him to get the Glory and He is always working His plan because you matter in His plan. I suggest you take a look at the resume’ of your life, and see how God has been working His plan in your life. I think you will see that your resume’ tells a story, stories of victories and triumphs, stories of God making a way out of no way, stories of healing and deliverance, stories of salvation and God’s love for you. Your story is proof that you do matter to God and He has a plan for your life and He is always working His plan. Happy Women’s History Month…Celebrate your Awesomeness! Grace&Glory 7

Keona

Officer

Holley

March is Women’s History Month and Grace & Glory Magazine is honoring and celebrating the life of fallen BCPD Officer Keona Holley. Officer Holley was shot while on duty in Baltimore on December 16, 2021, she died from her injuries a week later. We asked Apostle Jekia Ledbetter, Officer Holley’s Pastor and close family friend, to talk with us about BCPD Officer Keona Holley.

♦♦♦ G&G: Apostle Ledbetter, would you share with us how you knew Officer Keona Holley? Apostle Ledbetter: I knew Keona for over twenty plus years. We both were born and raised in the Edmondson Village Community. Our journey of friendship began when she joined the Edmondson Village Steppers Marching Band. My love for family and community strength allowed me to start EVS and remained the director for 10 years. God allowed the Lower Edmondson Village Community to financially sponsor the band and it became an excitement of unity for many families. My journey would later come to an end with EVS, when God called me into ministry. Even when I shifted to ministry Keona followed, and when God led me to pastor my own ministry Keona was right there to join. It will be 15 years this year for me as a pastor and up until her untimely death I remained her Mentor, Pastor, Counselor and Friend. G&G: Apostle Ledbetter, what do you know about Keona’s journey to become a police officer? Did she share with you why she chose a career in law enforcement? Did she have your full support? Apostle Ledbetter: When Keona came to me about joining the Baltimore City Police Department, I said, “Are you serious?” She was so excited of even the thought of being a cop. At the age of 23 years old, Keona did a BCPD ride-along and that experience stayed with her what seemed like forever. The experience that occurred on that ride-along ignited something in her seeing the work ethics and tributes that the police brought to the community; it really gave her something to work towards. Years later at a time where the reputation of the BCPD shifted to negative comments, thoughts and views they tugged at Keona’s heart. Keona felt like she could be a part of making a difference and bringing positive change to the communities of Baltimore. The first time she took her Police Agility test she failed and the tears that poured down her face were real. She came to me to share the news; I remember telling her it will be

ok and to be encouraged and do something else. She looked at me and said, “Pastor I can’t quit, didn’t you tell me, never to give up.” I was speechless, she was giving me back my own words. Keona’s determination was amazing. She changed her diet, she worked out every day, until she became that Baltimore City Police Officer. Her academy graduation was a day that changed her life forever. It empowered her and released her on a united journey to be a part of Baltimore’s Positive change for the better. G&G: Apostle Ledbetter let’s talk about faith and law enforcement, is there a place for faith in law enforcement? How much did faith play a role in Keona’s life as a police officer? Apostle Ledbetter: It absolutely plays a role; I believe that law enforcement and faith are both extremely important and works hand and hand. The law is needed for order, structure and fair treatment for all, but faith is a necessity. Faith is the wings of power, unity and strength, it is the fulfillment to any law. Faith acts as a voice for social justice initiatives and encouragement to those trying to better the world around them. Most people don’t understand the intense daily pressure on a police officer and any other first responder. They investigate deaths, re-live accidents, inform family members of deaths and without any faith in Jesus or God, it can weaken one’s identity. Faith has played a strong role in an individual’s values, making up the core beliefs of that person’s identity. This identity and stance can affect how that individual may engage in social movement and/or change. Most of the law enforcement involved in tragedies that we’ve seen over the last several years are based on fear, law enforcement professionals not knowing and, therefore, fearing the people that they’re protecting and serving — and oftentimes people and communities fearing law enforcement. II Timothy 1:7, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”.

G&G: Apostle Ledbetter, Officer Keona Holley was a mother and a grandmother, and our prayers are with her family. Would you share with us how the family is doing and coping at this time? Apostle Ledbetter: Keona has four children Ky’Jonna (23), Kaliyah (18), Kamryn (14), Kortez (10) and a grandson Noah (11 months). Her family has been taking it one day at a time, missing her, loving her but thanking God for her. They are learning that each one is expressing their grief differently, but their continuous prayers have been for God’s healing, guidance, strength and love to remain upon them. I see them every day determined to keep her dreams, vision and legacy alive. Their plan in life is to continue to be that forgiving love and hope that Baltimore is in need of; and prayerfully through this act, Keona Holley will not be just a memory but will live in the hearts of many.

Apostle Ledbetter: I want people to know that even though Officer Keona Holley is not with us physically she is with us spiritually. I want people to know that her legacy and life accomplishments are speaking louder from the grave. I want everyone to know that the devil did not win. For Genesis 50:20 (IS CLEAR), “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive.” Keona’s last conscious act of movement was at University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit, when she was laying on the bed with bullet fragments still in her brain, the Lord had me to play Maverick City Music’s song “Jireh” and I watched the tears flow from her eyes and one of her fingers moved; it was at that moment she was declaring through her faith not her condition that Jehovah Jireh was still more than enough for her life. It was at that moment that she understood the meaning of Philippians 1:21, “For to me to live is Christ and to die is to gain.” That girl from Edmondson Village’s life testament became the portal that would allow thousands of people of every nationality, race, and gender from around the world to gather for a Life Celebration that would resemble not a tragedy but a triumph of display of God’s love, unity, strength, grace, and Victory. We might not never understand why, but God didn’t call us to understand Him but to trust Him. That trust in God allowed her to gain her heavenly wings and has allowed her children, family, and close friends to inherit an even bigger family that now reaches state to state, country to country. The love, support, and prayers of so many people around the world have been felt within our hearts. I will be forever grateful unto God that our lives didn’t cross but they were knitted together for a time such as this. I miss her like crazy, but the Love of an Amazing God has made it so the work, life, legacy, committee of Officer Keona Shannel Holley will remain a loud voice of change for this generation and historically she will remain in hearts and will be the conversations of generations to come.

G&G: Apostle Ledbetter, is there anything you would like to add about Officer Keona Holley?

Apostle Ledbetter thank you for helping us to honor and celebrate the life of BCPD Officer Keona Holley.

Keona on a day-to-day basis, on and off the job, dealt with life’s pressure, disappointments and victories; believing Philippians, 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Keona Holley was not just a Police Officer but a woman of faith. It was that faith and belief in God that strengthened her to bring change, love, unity and justice not only to the citizens of Baltimore but to her family and friends as well. G&G: Apostle Ledbetter, an officer spends a lot of time in uniform; a uniform that represents strength, power, and protection. Being Keona’s Pastor and friend, you knew there was more to her than the uniform she wore. Tell us about the woman out of uniform? Apostle Ledbetter: Keona Holley was a mother of four, a daughter, a sister and friend to many. She had an amazing smile, loved her family, singing, dancing, eating crabs and decorating. She loved cooking for her immediate family and family in blue (Southern District). There were times that Keona would literally suppress her own feelings to encourage others, even when she was going through a storm herself. In those times that her faith and strength grew weak, her tribe of support from family and friends was large.

Life as a Female Police Officer In celebration of Women's History Month we are so excited to highlight women in law enforcement. We are spotlighting Baltimore City Police Officer Freda Arrington, who has been a police officer for more than 20 years, we talked with her about "Life as a Female Officer", here is our interview. . . G&G: Would you share a little about yourself, where you grew up, went to school, etc.? Sergeant Arrington: Hello. My name is Freda Arrington, and I am currently a Sergeant in the Officer Health and Wellness Unit/Retiree Affairs Division within the Baltimore City Police Department. I am currently in my 27th year on the department and I must say it’s been wonderful. I grew up in Baltimore City and graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. After graduating from Dunbar with my EMT license, I enrolled in school to further my paramedic career. G&G: Tell us about the journey that led you to becoming a police officer? Why did you choose a career in law enforcement, was this something you always wanted to do with your life? Sergeant Arrington: While working for a private ambulance company right after high school, and going to college, I thought about becoming a police cadet, I love helping people, so I said why not give it a try. I applied in April,1994 and was hired October 1994 as a police cadet. In January,1996, I was enrolled in the police academy and became a police officer in September,1996. I chose a career in law enforcement because I love people. I enjoy helping and protecting people. It’s very rewarding and I truly feel it’s a blessing from GOD. G&G: How did this decision to become a police officer affect your family and friends, did you have full support, did you lose friends behind your decision? Sergeant Arrington: My family and friends were very supportive of me becoming a police officer. Some of the friends that I did lose, I actually gained double since working at the Police Department. G&G: I understand you have served as a police officer for many years; experiencing controversial events and issues over the years surrounding police officers, what is it like to be a police officer today, how does it compare to when you first started? Sergeant Arrington: Being a police officer today is a lot different from being a police officer in the 90’s. In the 90’s the majority of the people respected the police. I have seen a dramatic change now especially with our younger generation. It’s very sad to see this type of atmosphere especially in the streets of Baltimore where I grew up at. We have a lot of caring and loving police officers here in our city but it’s so hard to be a police officer when you are not respected. Regardless of whether people show me respect or not, I will always do my best to respect them. I am doing this job for GOD’s glory and for the communities that I serve. I am praying for cities all over the world that things get better. G&G: I would imagine there is a lot of pressure being a female in law enforcement. Have you ever experienced discrimination or situations of not being accepted as a woman in a role that has been dominated for years by men? Sergeant Arrington: I can honestly say that I have been ok in that department. I get along and love everyone and if that situation did happen, I would definitely approach that person in a respectful manner and advise them to stop the nonsense.

G&G: Faith and law enforcement, is there a place for faith in law enforcement? How much does faith play a role in your life as a police officer? Sergeant Arrington: There is absolutely a place for faith in law enforcement. JESUS is my best friend, and he knows and loves me more than anything. Without him I can do nothing! John 15:5 says, “I am the vine, you are the branches, If you abide in me, I will abide in you, and you will bear much fruit, Apart from me you can do nothing.” GOD gave me this job and I will not leave him out of it. He is my life. I was created by GOD and for GOD and for his purpose. This scripture stays with me. I love GOD and I definitely need him every day, and moment of my life. In addition, to the various positions that I have had the pleasure to work, I have been able to share the gospel with others. G&G: I believe it is safe to say much of your time is spent in uniform and that uniform represents many things, strength, power, and protection, to name a few. I also believe there is more to you than the uniform you wear; tell us about the woman out of uniform, how would you describe her? Sergeant Arrington: I would describe myself as being a child of GOD first and foremost. I am a PK (Pastor’s Kid), my dad became my Pastor approximately 10 years ago. Working in the church is what I enjoy the most. I am responsible for the youth ministry, and I participate in other ministries that we have. I am a very loving and caring person who wants the best for everyone. I am the same person whether in uniform or not. Caring, sincere, compassionate and loving. The police department is a very important job and I truly appreciate it; however, the uniform doesn’t define the God-fearing woman that I am. I enjoy helping people with their walk with CHRIST. I was created for GOD, by GOD and for His purpose! I truly want to please GOD wherever I am whether it’s at work or home. G&G: Women in general wear many hats; how do you balance work, family, and your personal life? Is it difficult to separate your life as a police officer from your personal life? Sergeant Arrington: Balancing work, family, and my personal life has become easier compared to my earlier years. In 2009, I lost my first husband suddenly to a heart attack, he was 35 years old, I was left to raise four children ages 1, 4, 11, and 15. I would say that was the hardest time trying to work and juggle everything, but I do thank GOD for my family helping me. In 2015, I remarried and gained an additional 3 children. I believe that it is so important to spend time with your family, one thing that you don’t get back is time. Therefore, after work I try my best to hang out with the family, travel, and spend time with my grandbabies. I know a lot of officers save their vacation time. I never have and never will because spending time with family is such a blessing to me. G&G: Would you recommend law enforcement as a career choice and what advice would you give an aspiring female interested in becoming a police officer? Sergeant Arrington: I would definitely recommend law enforcement to aspiring females because we are definitely needed. GOD knew what he was doing when he made us women. Women bring that sense of comfort and calmness to most situations. G&G: Lastly, with this being Women’s History Month, are there any women that have inspired you or have had an impact on your life? Sergeant Arrington: I can honestly say that there have been many women in my life that have been very inspirational to me; but one in particular at the police department was, Mrs. Claudia Wright. She has since retired but while working with her she assisted with my walk with CHRIST. She encouraged me through my journey with bible study, and intense prayer. Sister Claudia is truly a child of GOD. I thank GOD for placing her in my life. Grace&Glory 13

Life as a Female Police Officer In celebration of Women's History Month we are so excited to highlight women in law enforcement. We are also spotlighting Baltimore City Police Officer Roberta Yates, who has been a police officer for more than 20 years, we talked with her about "Life as a Female Officer", here is our interview. . . G&G: Would you share a little about yourself, where you grew up, went to school, etc.? Officer Yates: I am # 2 of 7 children (5 girls/2 boys). Born in Harlem NY, NYC, raised on the Lower East side of Manhattan. Attended Manhattan Center for Science and Math. Loved English. I have 2 Children (both boys) ages 18 & 27 years old. G&G: Tell us about the journey that led you to becoming a police officer? Why did you choose a career in law enforcement, was this something you always wanted to do with your life? Officer Yates: I began my career in Law Enforcement with School Safety (started under the Board of Education) currently under the NYPD. I always wanted to be a lawyer, but I guess I never followed through with the dream. While employed with School Safety, I became a Sergeant on patrol (mainly dealing as a response unit for incidents within the lower portion of Manhattan H.S.) G&G: How did this decision to become a police officer affect your family and friends, did you have full support, did you lose friends behind your decision? Officer Yates: My decision to become a Police Officer never affected my family. My mother died when I was 14 years old, and it was a struggle dealing with anger issues and identity issues as a young person. I never really asked my family or friends for their opinions because I always felt it wasn’t their decision any way. As I've gotten older and wiser, and I became a mother, I only then began to worry how things would affect my boys. G&G: I understand you have served as a police officer for many years; experiencing controversial events and issues over the years surrounding police officers, what is it like to be a police officer today, how does it compare to when you first started? Officer Yates: I've served as a Baltimore Police Officer for almost 22 years, and School Safety for 5 years. Things have definitely changed. I consistently talk to my children and

remind them that respect goes a long way. Your behavior needs to be displayed even when there is no one looking. I believe that policing definitely needs to be overhauled but be reminded Policing is NEVER pretty. I believe that you treat and speak to people how you want to be treated. G&G: I would imagine there is a lot of pressure being a female in law enforcement. Have you ever experienced discrimination or situations of not being accepted as a woman in a role that has been dominated for years by men? Officer Yates: In my personal opinion there is pressure of being a female in Law Enforcement. When I first started in Baltimore, I had to earn my respect with my male coworkers, they had to see if I could handle myself. I believe after speaking and giving the respect and dignity that people deserved, they began to see that I didn’t need to be too aggressive or speak to people with a sharp tongue all the time. I can’t remember if I was ever discriminated against for being a female on the job. Everything I've always done is with respect and dignity, this has always afforded me with several opportunities. G&G: Faith and law enforcement, is there a place for faith in law enforcement? How much does faith play a role in your life as a police officer? Officer Yates: I believe that there is ALWAYS a place for faith in Law Enforcement. This job doesn't allow you to be sensitive all the time. You have to handle situations and make decisions for people that can't make them on their own at times. I pray every day, (morning, noon and night). I pray that I make the right decisions for others. I pray that my heart and mind is strong to deal with the pressures of everyday life. I pray that I'm thankful that I'm able to live another day. My faith and beliefs play a big part in my work. However, I believe that it is seen by the way I treat people and my daily acts. G&G: I believe it is safe to say much of your time is spent in uniform and that uniform represents many things, strength, power, and protection, to name a few. I also believe there is more to you than the uniform you wear; tell us about the woman out of uniform, how would you describe her? Officer Yates: I wear my uniform PROUDLY. I wear it so that others can use me as their shield, and their strength. When I'm not in the uniform, I am a WOMAN, MOTHER, SISTER. FRIEND, PROTECTOR, and used as God finds fit. Grace&Glory 15

a woman’s perspective

Let’s Win Together

The enemy would like for women to stand divided. He wants us pitted against each other, because he knows that without unity what we can accomplish will be diminished and minimized.

Rhoda TURNER

Women, we are supposed to be helpers. We were created to be a helpmeet. The seed was planted in our very existence; the seed to help. The dictionary defines help as: To make it easier for (someone) to do something by offering one's services or resources, i.e. "They helped her with domestic chores". When sin entered the earth with Adam and Eve, the element of help that existed turned into a desire for selfish gain. As a result, what it sounds like today is, "I can’t help you or support you, because I did it by myself without receiving any help." God intended for us to work as a team to be supportive to one another. What does teamwork mean? teamwork; noun: the combined action of a group of people, especially when effective and efficient. The definition of teamwork simplified is a group of people working together to achieve a common goal. If that is the goal, then why does it appear that women cannot work together as a team? I will tell you why. When Adam and Eve disobeyed the Father’s instruction sin was introduced. That sin had a ripple effect and ultimately changed the way we not only saw ourselves, but the way we saw our roles as it pertained to others. We were redeemed after the death of Jesus, but instead of it being an automatic switch back to our original design the choice remained for us to either live into the design or operate under the default option post sin's introduction; to be a helpmeet or to be selfish. 22   March 2022

In 1 Corinthians 12:14 the Bible’s reads, “For in fact the body is not one member but many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased. And if they were all one member, where would the body be? But now indeed there are many members, yet one body. And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary. And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty, but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it, that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.” This Scripture depicts how we should work together as a unit. When one shines, we all shine, because that one that is shining has paved a way for others. I work in an office full of women and when I was given The Educator of the Year Award, every one of those women stood and cheered for me. They did not use that moment to ask why they weren’t honored. Instead, they were truly happy for the accomplishments that I had made. When they asked me to say something, in return I honored those women who I work with daily that made my job easier. We have unique gifts that God has given us. Let us combine those gifts and work together. “As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” - I Peter 4:10 NKJV Let’s stand for one another. Let’s cheer for one another. Let’s applaud each other's accomplishments. Let's allow iron to sharpen Iron. We as women have made such great strides in overcoming adversity, and the key to continued success is in our ability to Pastor Rhoda Turner stand united. Stay Motivated…

Your Springboard Awaits Happy March! As many of you know this is the last month of the first quarter of 2022. Can you believe it? As a matter of fact, the seasons will officially change on March 20th, and we will welcome Spring! Take a moment to reflect on your successes and challenges this first quarter of 2022. Are you still motivated about your destiny in Christ? I want you to imagine me looking at you face to face, eyeball to eyeball and saying to you in my most authoritative voice, “STAY MOTIVATED!" I believe that God has prepared a spiritual springboard for you! However, you must stay motivated. If you have never used a springboard or unfamiliar with what it is, google defines it as a strong flexible board from which someone can jump in order to gain added impetus when performing a dive or a gymnastic movement. Now, I don’t know about you, but I am not a gymnast. I do good to work out three days a week. Therefore, I have no clue on utilizing a springboard in that regard. In addition, I don’t know how to swim or

float for that matter, so I truly have no experience on using a springboard to take a dive. However, I do know that greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world. I do know that God is taking us higher in our calling and destiny! I trust that He has placed a spiritual springboard for you and me to go higher in what he has already called us to do! I pray that March be our month that we springboard to higher heights in Christ Jesus! Are you ready to go higher? Are you ready to soar above your equals? Are you ready to let go and let God? Your springboard is waiting. Do not grow weary. God has created a tailored made springboard just for you. Therefore, no matter what season you are in; motivation must be a part of your lifestyle. You must hear it, speak it and surround yourself by it. If you are finding yourself in a place of discouragement or unbelief, I am so glad God has purposed me to motivate you. I am here to tell you; your springboard is waiting on you. It is built by the best. It will not give way. It

will not fail you. Trust me! It is imperative you utilize it this month! Wherever this message finds you, just remember, God is adding momentum to the good works he has already prepared for you. If you are taking baby steps, STAY MOTIVATED! If you are experiencing challenges, STAY MOTIVATED! If you are dealing with disappointment, STAY MOTIVATED! Get on your springboard and jump in Christ Jesus. Gleam on things that will inspire you. Reflect on things that will encourage you, and breathe in things that will invigorate you! Let Isaiah 43:19 settle the matter. The word of the Lord says, “See I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Stay motivated…your springboard awaits! Live life on the promise of IMPACT! trinkets to triumph

Make Mary Your Muse

Since March is Women’s History Month, in addition to celebrating the accolades and achievements of other women, celebrate yourself! Make your mark on other women by using the gifts God blessed you with to be a blessing to others and make your Master proud. Make Mary, the Master’s mother, your muse! Make the mother of your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, your inspiration and reminder that you are blessed and highly favored (Luke 1:28). When the angel, Gabriel, visited Mary to share the plans God had for her life, Mary, although she had questions, was willing to immediately obey God and was open to being used by Him. God knows the plans He has for you (Jeremiah 29:11). Use Mary as your muse and say to the Lord, “May everything

trinkets to triumph you said about me come true.” (Luke 1:38)

to your heart and praise Him when they manifest.

Make Mary your muse and inspiration and listen to God. Mary listened to the message Gabriel delivered and didn’t seem to think twice about it. Even with her inquiries, she wanted to please God and was willing to obey His plan. Like Mary, God has a plan for your life and will provide all the provisions necessary for your plans to manifest. Mary didn’t know what the future would hold but she knew her life was in the hands of God and knew that He would perfect all the things that concerned her (Psalm 138:8).

Like Mary, link up with likeminded ladies. Mary made it a point to link up with her cousin, Elizabeth. The angel, Gabriel, gave her the good news that she was pregnant (Luke 1:36). She knew she would be able to share her experiences with Elizabeth and praise God along with her because both women were blessed and knew that nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:37). She also knew that Elizabeth and her husband, Zechariah, were righteous in God’s eyes and obeyed all His commandments and regulations (Luke 1:6-7). Make Mary your muse and let her life inspire you with the fact that no good thing will God withhold from you when you walk upright before Him (Psalm 84:11). Look for like-minded ladies (or gentlemen) to link up with who share common goals and together build and break barriers.

Make Mary your muse and have a heart like hers and bury God’s promises and His word deep down in your heart so you will not sin against Him (Psalm 119:11). When the shepherds came to see baby Jesus, they were excited and shared the news with everyone they encountered. All who heard their story was astonished but Mary kept this wonderful event in her heart and thought about it often (Luke 2:17-19). While watching Jesus grow and mature Mary kept all the events and experiences with Jesus deep down in her heart (Luke 2:51). Have a heart like hers and keep all of God’s promises for your life near and dear

When you make Mary your muse and inspiration, you can rest assured that all things are working out for your good (Romans 8:28). Think of everything Mary had to endure before giving birth to Jesus. She was young, trying to process what just happened, not sure if her fiancé would believe her, leave her, or even expose

her. Then imagine witnessing your child being beaten and killed. But thanks be to God the story didn’t end there. Imagine the joy in her heart to see her son, the Savior of the world, be resurrected and become Jesus Christ, Master overall. Make Mary your muse, and like her, never leave Jesus’s side. Mary was beside Jesus and witnessed Him go from being her son to the Savior of the World. Jesus promises to never leave or forsake you (Matthew 28:20) but you must stay by His side like Mary, His mother. Like Mary, make a melody to your Master (Luke 1:46-55). Sing songs of Zion to Him and make a joyful noise to let God know how much you worship and adore Him. Make Mary your muse and inspire others to listen to Jesus. When Jesus performed the miracle of turning water into wine at the wedding, Mary told the servants, “Do whatever He tells you to do.” (John 2:1-11). Be a witness of His Word and inspire others to do whatever His word tells you to do, and you can guarantee that God will manifest His promises. Make Mary your muse and your declaration will be like Mary’s, “He has done great things for me.” (Luke 1:49) Elder Tracey Nicole George www.traceystrinketstotriumph.com

Joy In Every Season - Spring Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this year. And while the winter may have lasted a bit longer the good news remains, seasons change. The cold of winter melts away to reveal the beauty of new life. Bright green, pink, white, yellow, and blue replace the gray tones that filled our view. The sounds of spring croak, trickle, and tweet the morning song of hope and joy. The smell of sunshine, grass, and flowers invigorate us. Philosopher Bernard Williams said, “The day the Lord created hope was the day he created spring.” Amen! While winter closes in around us, spring draws us out of hibernation. There is a collective deep inhale and stretch of freedom that spans plant, animal, and human. In nature, spring is the time to come out of hiding. The time when plants push up and out of the dirt to find the sun and blossom with new life. Animals look for food and babies are born. And people, well, according to scripture, spring is the time when kings go off to war. (2 Samuel 11:1; 1 Chronicles 20:1) Both physically and spiritually spring is the time to get back out there and do. New opportunities arise and we are graced to go after them. In fact, it’s what we are supposed to do. King David knew that part of his role as king was to go out in the spring. It was time to scout and concur. It’s what he

always did. Until the time he didn’t. That fateful year he stayed back and sent someone else. That’s when things went downhill. He should have been on assignment rather than up on that roof. The grace was to go. He chose to stay. During a spiritual winter, we are invited to rest. To sit in the presence and protection of our loving Father as we often work through things like exhaustion, hurt, disappointment, change, or feeling isolated and even distant from God. Spiritual seasons aren’t limited to a three-month cycle. For me, my most recent winter lasted over a year. When the frost begins to thaw, with joy, the King leads us out. We do well to follow and pay attention. Spring comes with an invitation from the king. A special guided tour of the emergence of new life. The Lord wants to lead you out into the beauty. He wants to show you what was happening while you were hibernating. He was at work, and this is the time for Him to reveal the splendor of His good work. There is an abundance that comes with spring. Beauty and possibility are everywhere. It can be overwhelming and even jarring to a system that has been in hibernation. As we take it all in, we must trust the wisdom and leading of the King. Just like a fruit tree, not

every blossom, or new opportunity, leads to fruit. Spring is a time to observe and cultivate with careful intention. Where is the joy in spring? It may seem to be a redundant question, but it’s important to know where to look. With the opulence it’s easy to say, "everywhere", but we are too often tempted to look at the bright shiny things and call it "joy". Yes, there is great joy in new blooms, fresh air, and signs of growth, however, real joy is found in Jesus. The lasting joy of spring is found in the eyes of the King who leads us, with love, into His perfect joy. “The one I love calls to me: Arise, my dearest. Hurry, my darling. Come away with me! I have come as you have asked to draw you to my heart and lead you out. For now is the time, my beautiful one. The season has changed, the bondage of your barren winter has ended, and the season of hiding is over and gone. The rains have soaked the earth and left it bright with blossoming flowers. The season for singing and pruning the vines has arrived. I hear the cooing of doves in our land, filling the air with songs to awaken you and guide you forth.” Song of Solomon 2:10-12 TPT

health matters

Trusting Your Healthcare Provider Are They Right For You? Selecting a primary healthcare provider or general physician practitioner can be stressful. We question the provider’s expertise in a specific field. Although the Bible states we should not cast our confidence in men, we must have a level of confidence in the person who is directing our healthcare. Health care has changed over the last ten years. There are multiple issues to consider when selecting a physician. How can you determine if you and your health care provider are a good match? When considering a primary care provider for you or your family, decide if you prefer a male or a female. Consider if the location of their office and their affiliation with a hospital is essential in making your selection. Consider office hours. Are appointments available during the evening and weekends? Do you desire a young or older provider? Younger providers may be familiar with the latest healthcare innovations, yet they may be inexperienced in dealing with complicated healthcare issues. A more senior provider may have wisdom and experience but may reduce their office hours and limit receiving new patients. They may soon retire from practice, leaving you with the need to find another provider. Solicite referrals from friends, family, and neighbors. A recommendation from someone you trust is a good way to identify a highly-skilled, helpful physician. But remember: Every person is different. Just because a provider was perfect for your neighbor or best friend doesn’t mean that they are right for you. Check with your insurance plan to identify providers that accept your insurance benefits. Insurance companies often have a list of providers whose services are covered by the health insurance plan. Decide if you desire a traditional physician or a nurse practitioner. Advance practice nurses, trained in providing comprehensive care to patients, including 38   March 2022

making referrals and with prescription authority, are viable and less costly healthcare services options. Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) are licensed by the state and can provide care to individuals across the life span. FNPs may practice with a physician or deliver care through independent clinics and offices. Nurse practitioners accept all major insurances and co-pay options. Do your research. Gather information about your potential provider by checking their quality rating online. Read what others say about the care they received from the provider. Consider if the provider is certified by a practice board or organization. Board certification indicates the provider has passed quality tests and adheres to specified standards of care. Ask for an interview. Secure an opportunity to talk with the provider to ask questions. Inquire how the office handles prescription refills? Do they have an online portal to make appointments, obtain lab results, and engage in virtual appointments? Will the office call to remind you if you’re overdue for an annual screening or a flu shot? After selecting a provider and completing your first office visit, ask yourself whether you feel comfortable with the provider. Did they answer your questions? Do you think they were interested in your wellbeing? How was the office managed? Do you believe your health information is secure and your privacy will be maintained? Consider these factors as you choose your healthcare provider to achieve a confident Dr. Denyce Watties-Daniels and supportive relationship Assistant Professor at between you and your health Coppin State University DWatties-Daniels@coppin.edu practitioner. healthytips025@gmail.com

My Personal Grief Journey Thanksgiving 2020 rocked my world forever. My husband, Derrick, of almost five and a half years passed away from COVID 19 and transitioned to be with the Lord on that day, November 26, 2020. Never in a million years did I think I would become a young widow. To say I was devastated beyond measure is an understatement. At that point, I truly began to question everything about my walk with the Lord. Honestly, I was angry with God and 40   March 2022

"Seek Me"

told Him that I was going to walk away from our relationship because I felt like he dropped me and completely turned His back on me. I was finally married to a man who served the Lord and truly loved me after I had gone through a failed marriage a few years back. My first marriage ended in divorce after my exhusband abandoned me less than two months into the marriage. Then with my late husband passing away, I began wondering if this was a sign that I was not meant to be married. I even asked God if I was being punished for something I wasn’t aware of. I mean, how could God do that to me and allow my heart to be crushed to the point where I couldn’t even breathe? Since I was a child, I strived to faithfully serve the Lord, and I couldn’t understand why He allowed me to endure so much pain. At that point, I decided that maybe serving God wasn’t for me. I tried to walk away from the relationship, but despite my efforts, He relentlessly pursued me. Thus began my grief journey. Throughout the year after my late husband’s passing, I went through bi-weekly grief counseling sessions with my therapist who helped me to navigate my journey toward healing and restoration. NOTHING about that process was easy. It was uncomfortable in the beginning during the initial purging process of grief. But I kept telling myself that I was going to get to the other side of this. My determination coupled with God’s grace and unfailing love for me is what kept me going. I wanted to live. I wanted to have hope again. But I had to go through the process. Slowly but surely, God loved me through my process, and my relationship with Him was redefined. Almost a year later on November 17, 2021, one of my fellow widow friends shared a scripture with me as a word of encouragement during my grief journey. The scripture was Deuteronomy 4:29 - "But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul." Later that day, the melody to the chorus of "Seek Me" https://youtu.be/u9DEIEXu0R8 dropped into my spirit. Sometime afterward on that same day, God gave me the first verse. The following day, I shared the verse and chorus with a fellow songwriter, Elder Judah Hatcher, and he suggested that I connect with The Wall Factory Recording Studios to record the song. By the end of the week, God gave me the remaining lyrics to complete the song. Within that same timeframe, God instructed Minister Tyshawn Gibbons, CEO of Just Praise Entertainment, to come alongside me to be my advisor, manager and promoter in the process of getting my song recorded, copyrighted, and ultimately released and streaming on all major platforms. In December 2021, I recorded the song at the studio and obtained the copyright in January 2022. February 13, 2022, Super Bowl Sunday, I officially announced the release of my single. Primarily, “Seek Me” depicts my personal journey in seeking God after a deep loss but I'm hopeful this song will encourage anyone who has experienced loss or hardship in their life to seek the Lord with all their heart and soul. . Courtney's song “Seek Me” is now streaming on all major platforms:

SPORTSWEAR FASHION NEWS: Has The Platform Sneaker Trend Run Its Course? The world of sneakers has found its permanent spot in both runway and street culture for many years. The late 80s and early 90s are still very much influential eras for today’s sneaker fashion from low to high end brands. Whether it’s a flamboyant hue for a simple fit, an intentional pattern clash, or a classic finish to a comfy sweatsuit, sneakers are almost guaranteed to be the first focal point of

42   March 2022

attention for any fit. Sneakers have become one of the best ways to express originality and style. Nowadays, even brides throw on a pair of Air Jordan 1’s for the wedding reception because it’s widely known that sneakers split no differences with functionality. In fact, Air Jordan releases remain the highest anticipated sneaker releases on the calendar every year, even over Yeezy.

For many years, sneakers were considered just athletic or casual alternatives, but more and more they are reaching beyond their existence as just a gym shoe. Classic sneakers like Air Force 1, Stan Smiths and other low top sneakers dominated the industry with their “dress up- dress down” abilities for the last decade or so. Even Gucci came out with a classic that resembles the silhouette of the iconic Stan Smith sneaker. Around 2017, the footwear fashion industry welcomes back the platform sneaker. Balenciaga completely and quickly dominated the thick sole trend while Gucci, Alexander McQueen and some others added their twist to the party. But what sneaker really gave Balenciaga a run for its fat sneaker money? Take a wild guess… Yep! The iconic Allstar Chuck Taylor! Completely unpredicted and preferred by minimalists and trendsetters, rarely ever did this shoe stay on the shelves after any given release day. This made them a super easy come up for resellers. The question is… Has the platform sneaker reached the possible end of its road for current sneaker culture? With the growing embrace of personal style and uniqueness, sneaker trends are lasting much longer than times past. It’s highly doubtable. SPORTSWEAR AND SNEAKER FORECAST What are some athleisure trends and sneaker releases to look out for in March? - ALL THINGS SPANDEX (women) • Tanks, sports bras and tights are the go-to for most

women. They work for both the gym and the grocery store regardless of the weather. These are probably not the most “fashion forward pieces,” but relevant still. - ALL THINGS OVERSIZED (unisex) • Be on the lookout for those nostalgic features in almost every brand like Nike, Adidas and Puma coming this Spring. Comfort is the key in today’s trend. - THE TRACK PANT • The comfort of pajamas but the look of running gear… Track pants are another trend that is most likely never to phase out. New colorways are on the way as we enter into the spring months for sure. - SWEATPANTS • Yeah right! Are we even going to go there? Whether it’s elasticized cuffed bottoms, or slim fit joggers. . . Imagine life without basic cotton lined sweats…. Nah, I don’t want to either MARCH SNEAKER RELEASE CALENDAR
