And God has actually given us His Spirit (not the world’s spirit) to tell us about the wonderful free gifts of grace and blessing that God has given us.

16

In telling you about these gifts we have even used the very words given to us by the Holy Spirit, not words that we as men might choose. So we use the Holy Spirit’s words to explain the Holy Spirit’s facts.

scripture page 2 September 2022

How could he? For certainly he has never been one to know the Lord’s thoughts, or to discuss them with Him, or to move the hands of God by prayer. But, strange as it seems, we Christians actually do have within us a portion of the very thoughts and mind of Christ.

But the spiritual man has insight into everything, and that bothers and baffles the man of the world, who can’t understand him at all.

12

But the man who isn’t a Christian can’t understand and can’t accept these thoughts from God, which the Holy Spirit teaches us. They sound foolish to him because only those who have the Holy Spirit within them can understand what the Holy Spirit means. Others just can’t take it in.

11

10

14

No one can really know what anyone else is thinking or what he is really like except that person himself. And no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit.

But we know about these things because God has sent His Spirit to tell us, and His Spirit searches out and shows us all of God’s deepest secrets.

13

That is what is meant by the Scriptures which say that no mere man has ever seen, heard, or even imagined what wonderful things God has ready for those who love the Lord.

For Grace & Glory Magazine September also symbolizes the end of one year and the start of its 16th year in publication. This new year for Grace & Glory Magazine there is one word that comes to mind; that word is determined. We have been determined on purpose these past 15 years to always inspire, encourage and empower our readers with each issue. It is our prayer that we have done just that; and it is also our prayer that we continue to be a resource for our readers as a ministry tool for purpose. Grace & Glory magazine will always use its platform to shine a light as long as God continues to lead and guides us forward.

It takes a whole new level of determination to still give God the glory and live your life for Christ despite whatever you are going through. Despite whatever has happened or has not happened in your life thus far, you have to be determined to not allow yourself to be defeated. You have to be determined NOT to give up or give in. “A difficult time can be more readily endured if we retain the conviction that our existence holds a purpose – a cause to pursue, a person to love, a goal to achieve.” (John Maxwell)

It is amazing what God will do with one person’s determination in life. Particularly a person that knows and operates in purpose and on purpose. There is the determination of a single mother to make sure her children grow up successful. There is the determination a teacher has to educate his or her students to take them to the next level. There is the determination a pastor has to preach the Gospel to bring men and women to salvation.

There are many ways to define determination- resolve, singlemindedness, perseverance, and persistence, to name a few. Determination is also defined as a tendency to move in a fixed direction. Philippians 3:14-15 says, “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Staying focused is another way to describe determination; staying focused is knowing that the outcome will be far greater than what you are experiencing in the moment. It takes a lot of strength and courage to be determined and remain determined; making a firm decision and being resolved not to change it. Never underestimate determination and what it can do. I am in total awe of what God has done for Grace & Glory Magazine and what He will do to fulfill His purpose. Grace & Glory is determined on purpose to remain steadfast, unmovable and always abounding in the work of the Lord. (I Corinthians 15:58). God promises our determination will not be in vain.

Though the month of September is the ninth month of the year, it often symbolizes the end of one thing and the start of another.

Another person’s determination can have a direct impact on our individual lives; another person’s determination can inspire you to also be determined to get to victory in your life. I believe that one of the keys to living a great life is being determined to live the life God has prepared for you. God is able to do exceeding abundantly more than you could ever imagine with your life. (Ephesians 3:20).

OnDeterminedPurpose

Grace&Glory Can you believe it? It is September already!!

September symbolizes the end of summer and the start of fall; the end of school break for students and the start of a new school year; the end of summer vacations and the start of getting back to the grind of everyday living. We even start putting away summer clothing and preparing for the next season.

Pastor Quincy J.

8 September 2022 East Baltimore Deliverance Church Baltimore, Maryland

Pastor Phillips: Yes, since the age of three I’ve been playing music and at age nine or ten I started playing for the church. Growing up there in East Baltimore and spending a lot of time with my Grandmothers, the late Evangelist Holt-Hooker and Apostle Christina Holtsclaw, I was able to watch firsthand two amazing women of God. Although, I definitely wasn’t looking for this call, but as I reflect back, I can see how God was preparing me. Although one has passed, I was very close to both grandmothers, so I watched how they prayed, how they lived, how they helped people. I watch how they sacrificed, and all this had a great impact on me. Although, I did serve as Minister of Music for 22 years and also did a good amount of traveling the last nine of those years, I believe all of it helped prepare me for this time. Of course, I didn’t really understand it at that time, but I understand it now. The Lord has been molding and shaping me for this point in time, that He may get the glory out of my life.

Pastor Phillips: Growing up in church, I was able to see many come and minister. Hearing and seeing this had a profound impact on my life. Of course, at three years old I wasn’t really sure what I was doing or saying, but I was mimicking what I saw and heard. I wanted to preach so much, that they had a little pulpit made for me and then I would quote scriptures. This went on for many years, but then music took over. But yes, since three I’ve had the drive to share the word with

Pastor Phillips: It feels amazing…. although it’s a lot of work and responsibilities, but a joy. The installation service went very well. So many family, friends and well-wishers were in attendance. It was truly a blessing.

G&G: Pastor Phillips, I understand that for many years you have been a musician for East Baltimore Deliverance Church, would you share with us the journey that led to you becoming the Pastor of East Baltimore Deliverance Church?

G&G: Along with your transition to Pastor of East Baltimore Deliverance Church, I understand there were two other elevations in the ministry. Would you tell us about those two positions?

Grace&Glory 9 Q&A Interview- Pastor Quincy J. Phillips

G&G: Pastor Phillips, we are delighted to welcome you to the Grace & Glory family, and we congratulate you on your installation as the new Pastor of the East Baltimore Deliverance Church! Let’s talk about the installation… first how does it feel to now be the Pastor of the East Baltimore Deliverance Church?

Pastor Phillips: Yes, Elder Maurice Crafton was elevated to AssistantPastor and Rev. Maria Spence was elevated to Elder. Both have been serving at East Baltimore Deliverance Church over 30 years and have served in many capacities. I’ve known them both all of my life and it’s a blessing to serve with them.

G&G: Pastor Phillips many pastors have shared with me that ‘preaching the gospel’ was not necessarily what they had planned for their life. When did you realize that God had called you to preach the gospel?

Installation of Pastor Quincy Phillips

G&G: Pastor Phillips, my last few questions are a little more personal, how would you answer this question, “Who is Quincy Phillips”? What three words would you use to best describe yourself? from page 9

10 September 2022

G&G: Looking back over your life are you surprised at where you are today? And how does it feel to know that God has called you to an assignment of this magnitude?

♦ ♦ ♦

Pastor Quincy Phillips, Dr. Carolyn Seawell, Apostle Christina Holtsclaw

Pastor Phillips: Yeah, I could’ve never imagined it could be like this. Although, I did pray for many of the things that I have, but I couldn’t see how it could all come together. God is truly good and faithful. I’m truly humbled that the Lord would choose me for this assignment. I totally didn’t see it coming, but as I reflect, I can see how He was preparing me.

Pastor Phillips: We want to continue to serve this amazing community and be a light in the East Baltimore region. We want to win those who don’t know the Lord Jesus and encourage those who do know Him. We also want to continue to advance the Great Commissions set forth by the Lord Jesus Christ. I believe the Lord gave me the gift of music so that I can teach and share it with the next generation. One of the major plans is to draw the children from the community with the Arts and give them a platform to mold and shape their gift. I believe the Lord has positioned us to do this.

Pastor Phillips: I think spending time with the Lord Jesus is number one, because that’s going to be the only way that one will know what’s on His heart. Also, being with the people. Spend time with the people and hear where they’re coming from. I think it’s important to build a team that can do the same. Lastly, connect with those on social media. In the last two years so much has changed in the world, which actually pushed many churches into having a stronger online presence. I believe that the Body of Christ will reach more people because of technology.

Pastor Phillips: Yes, historically the Black Church has been a strong voice in the community, but we must strengthen that voice and be more present. One of the main messages that we share with people, is hope. I’m literally the proof. I grew up here (across the street from the church), so I know the transformation this community has gone through, the last 25 years. There are many people that I grew up with that are no longer here. I could have easily been swept away but thank God for a praying mother and praying grandmothers. They instilled hope and took me to church. The people need hope, and that hope is Jesus Christ. However, hope alone is not enough, meaning we must be active in the community. We need to let the Holy Spirit lead in our community. The community should know us, because they see us. The people saw Jesus and the Apostles. So, the message is hope in action.

Q&A

Continued

G&G: Pastor Phillips, now that you are a pastor what do you believe it takes to be a successful pastor in today’s society?

G&G: Pastor Phillips along with assignmentsgreatcome great responsibilities. What will you do to invest and see that the East Baltimore Deliverance Church is a vital force in its surrounding community? What is your vision and plan for this ministry?

Elder Maria Spence, Pastor Quincy Phillips, Apostle Christina Holtsclaw, Dr. Carolyn Seawell, Assistant Pastor Maurice Crafton

G&G: Historically the Black church has been the foundation of the Black community. Does the church still have a voice in the community? What should the church be saying and doing today?

Pastor Phillips: Well, I think being from Baltimore, people would be surprised to know that I can’t eat crabs. When I was younger, I loved crabs. Many of the family gatherings had crabs. But I think I had some bad seafood and then that was it, I couldn’t eat them anymore. It felt like my lips were swelling up. Terrible, right? G&G: Is there anyone who has had an impact on your life as a role model? How did they impact your life?

Pastor Phillips: Well, I just want to say thanks so much for the opportunity to share parts of my story and what God has been doing in my life. I hope this encourages the readers to seek after God like never before, because He has amazing plans for you. I could have never imagined the people I’ve met, or the places I’ve seen, but God is faithful, and He just wants us to trust Him. So, I hope this has been a blessing to you. Also, if you’re ever in the Baltimore area, please feel free to visit us in person at: East Baltimore Deliverance Church 1001 North Caroline Street Baltimore, MD 21205

Q&A

G&G: Do you see yourself as a role model, particularly to the youth of today? Do you have any words of wisdom that was shared with you that you would like to pass on?

G&G: Pastor Phillips, we thank God for you and your work for the Kingdom, and we will be praying for you and the East Baltimore Deliverance Church.

Or join us virtually on Facebook Live at: East Baltimore Evangelistic Center

Pastor Phillips: Years ago, I didn’t really see it, but as I look over my life and see how God orchestrated things and placed me on different platforms, now I understand why He took me the way He did. Sometimes people will reach out to me, or they may see me at a performance, and they’ll say: “Man, I’ve been watching you and checking out how you’ve lived your life, it encourages me to push through and trust God.”

G&G: Lastly, is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? Any final thoughts or words of encouragement?

The words of wisdom that I would pass on to anyone is to trust God. God has amazing plans for you, so pray about those dreams and aspirations. Most times these are God’s plans for our lives, but they are for an appointed time. What I’ve come to understand is that all those places God allowed me to see, along with that desire to travel, He put those desires there. So, the same God that answered my prayers will answer your prayers. Build a strong relationship with the Lord Jesus. Seek after Him through reading His word, prayer, fellowship and fasting. I’m telling you, His plans for our lives are absolutely amazing. So again, build a strong relationship with Him and trust Him.

Pastor Phillips: I’m most passionate about people coming to know God in a tangible way. Seeing people deepen their relationships with the Lord and people who come to know the Lord is a joy for me.

Pastor Phillips: Hmmmm.… Quincy Phillips is a young man, who loves the Lord Jesus and wants to please Him. Three words to describe me: 1. Funny 2. Serious 3. Musical G&G: What are you most passionate about?

Grace&Glory 11

Pastor Phillips: Thank you so much for opportunity to share and may God get all the glory.

G&G: What is something most people would be surprised to know about you?

Pastor Phillips: Oh wow!! My Grandmother, Apostle Christina Holtsclaw. I was able to spend a lot of time with her, growing up. Many times, she would have my cousins and I read through Proverbs and then discuss the meaning of the verses. I had no idea what she was doing at the time, but years later I can see the fruit. Also, just watching the way she lived probably had the biggest impact on my life. I can remember Tuesday Night Prayer and she sitting me beside her, although I wanted to run off and play, but I can remember her praying. She helped and encouraged me to go to school and in 2006 I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Music from the prestigious Howard University. So yeah, my Grandmother has and still impacts my life.

When Jesus went away to pray, rest, and reconnect with God everyone around him benefitted. He was more fully engaged and empowered to do God’s will because he had time to refresh himself. Many of us are tired and discouraged because we have not slowed down to seek God or to find new healthy ways to encourage ourselves. Our mental and physical needs are maximized by exploring more of what makes us, us. Doing what is best for you and making time for yourself is worth the investment. You are worth it. Jesus came to give you life more abundantly, but you must seek it. It is yours but you must make time to enjoy it, embrace it and share it with others. Making the most of your time blesses your soul. “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” 3 John 1:2 (NIV). Make time for yourself! You won’t regret it. your good health Make Time For Yourself

How are you doing? Before you say, ‘fine’, think about it. Have you taken time to sit with yourself, just you and God? What do you like to do in your free time? Who makes you laugh? What new activity or interest have you undertaken recently? These questions are to help you discover more about yourself and how you experience the world and others. God made each of us uniquely in His image so what you look like may be different from your brother or sister but that is okay. Now is the time to begin making time for yourself to be physically, mentally, and spiritually whole. Jesus made time for himself by going off to pray and separating himself from the crowds and sometimes even the disciples. “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” Mark 1:35 (NIV). He knew the importance of connecting to God and to his mission. He lived in a world filled with distractions but made time to stay focused on God’s will. Making time for yourself has spiritual benefits; when you find your worship style, favorite devotional book or a church home that fits it can be affirming. Exploring your creative side can boost your mood and decrease anxiety. Doing more of what you like to do can benefit your overall well-being. We are reminded, “Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God.” Ecclesiastes 5:19 (NIV). It is okay to work and enjoy life. Many times, people wait until retirement, or the children to graduate from school, or the money is right, before finding their joy and making time for themselves. That is not always the best approach to living. Making time for yourself is a benefit to you and to those around you.

BOWERS

Season 20 Sepptember 2022

Grace&Glory 21 joy bringer

Joy In Every Season - Autumn Season Bowers

I had no idea! The majesty of the fall is unmatched! What you call it depends greatly on where and how you were raised. Most of the world refers to this season as autumn, while those of us in the US tend to refer to it as the fall, but if you are at all associated with farming, you’ll be more inclined to call it “the harvest.” But no matter what you call it, or even if your part of the world experiences it as significantly as some others, fall is a season of dichotomy. It brings hard work and celebration, feasting and storing, the end of one thing and the beginning of another, and once again, transition. Everyone likes to eat but not everyone wants to do the work, thus the invention of fast food, microwaves, and my favorite, the air fryer. We like results and we like them fast. But when it comes to the harvest, there really is only one way: good old hard work and perseverance. The efforts of any farmer are more far-reaching than most can imagine. Each calculated and timely step in their process invests into something that will bring energy and life to people and even animals. In their own backyard, across the street, in the next town over and even beyond state or national borders. Harvest is worth celebrating! I know when I harvested my first batch of homegrown veggies, I was ecstatic. Scripture talks a lot about the feasts and celebration associated with the physical harvest of the soil, but also about the celebration of heaven when one lost sheep is saved - the harvest of the soul. Jesus shares about this celebration in Luke 15:7, “In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away!” What an honor that the Lord chooses to use us to accomplish His plan on this earth. We have the absolute privilege of participating in sowing, watering, and harvesting the joy of the Lord. We say, “sharing is caring” but really, sharing is what makes joy complete. Multiple times in the New Testament the phrase “complete joy” is mentioned and it’s always in reference to sharing. Sharing wisdom, knowledge, resources, and love with others makes joy complete. Part of the joy of feasting and celebration is sharing. Generosity is not reserved only for the harvest, but it is certainly where we can till the soil and plant the seeds for another’s salvation and growth. Scripture is clear that during the harvest, farmers were to intentionally leave some food on the vine or on the earth for those in need to gather behind them. It is also our time to honor the Lord for His goodness, giving back to the Lord what He has so generously given to us in the presentation of our tithes and offerings.

Pumpkin spice. Love it or hate it, its arrival is a modern sign of the changing season. More traditionally, when the leaves begin to turn and the air feels crisp, autumn has arrived and it’s fall, y’all!

While the leaves give a tour de force final performance as they show off their beauty and whimsical descent to the ground, we know that the days will soon come when plenty might not be easy, and reward might not be as evident. Technically the fall is when the trees and flowers die, falling to the ground to be used to produce new growth and new beginnings. It's the cycle of life. Everything must die, but nothing is wasted. Spiritually, fall can bring a sense of accomplishment, acknowledging and releasing and relinquishing. An end to some things that may have taken seasons or even decades of effort. A time to give space to the surrender of some things and the culmination of others. A time to open our hands and look up. To accept, to savor, to release and to give. Whether you witness the harvest with your own eyes is not the priority or the endgame. It is that you did, and you were, and you are and you will be and that He is, now and forevermore, the King of the Harvest. So, bring on the Pumpkin Spice or whatever it is that you do to celebrate this time of year. Inflatable pumpkins, caramel apples, haybales in your truck bed - why not?! You have worked hard for this time. Let’s share this harvest together and celebrate His goodness, His faithfulness, His joy. Well done, you!

Much like the diligent work it takes in the natural world to reap a harvest, the spiritual season of harvest is a time of awareness and activation. The harvest of anything depends on how we steward every step in the process, there is no “fast pass” when it comes to spiritual growth. The growing process takes perseverance and love and patience (we all love that part, right?) to see it through. We must stay in tune with the Lord to know when and how to act. The Lord has been preparing you for this time, and as Paul says in Galatians 6:9, “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.”

Honestly, I am new to the fall. I’ve lived most of my life in Southern California where there are really only two seasons - summer, and not-sosummer. Over the last year and a half, my husband and I have lived in both Tennessee and New England and experienced real seasons for the first time.

During the harvest, not only do we work, gather, celebrate and share, but we also prepare. Other than a big Costco trip, I had never been introduced to the idea of storing anything extra. Before living in Tennessee, I had no experience with canning and freezing. I now know why the little tops of the mason jars come off with a pop. (It has to do with a vacuum seal). It’s in the fall where, with wisdom, we learn to not just feast but to store in preparation for the seasons to come - the winter - the rest for the soil and the soul. Like all seasons, both physical and spiritual, this one will change, the fall will lead to some form of winter.

SeasonJoyfully,Bowers

How we steward our time and resources now, both natural and spiritual will have great effect on how not only we but those both near and far endure the coming season.

The last week of July and the first week of August was truly a struggle. My mind was pulled in several different directions. Typically, I compartmentalize very well. When I’m at home I deal with home. When I’m at work I deal with work and try not to bring work home too often. When I’m at church I’m at church. I try hard to keep these boundaries in place and it works well for my mental health and stability. But during that specific time frame that I previously mentioned, everything was bleeding together, and I felt exhausted and extremely overwhelmed.

TURNER a woman’s perspective

Back story, my husband and four daughters caught COVID, school was getting ready to start back and the church had several events going on at the same time. Responsibilities were weighing heavy on me. I hadn’t felt like this in a long time. It felt like the bottom was falling out from up under me and that I was completely overwhelmed. I remember sitting on the couch with my head in my hands. At that moment I was trying to hold back tears as they silently slid down my face. As I quarantined myself in the living room and everyone was asleep and quiet, at that moment I had peace and serenity. I asked God for help, renewal and strength. He reminded me of the scripture, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” Isaiah 26:3 KJV I was uplifted and encouraged by God’s voice telling me that He had me. Instead of leaning into my own strength I had to lean into the Father. I had to do a trust fall. You know that game where someone stands behind you, but are facing you, you cross your arms as they hold theirs out and you fall into their arms. God told me to trust Him and fall into Him knowing that He would keep me. That’s exactly what He did. He kept me and as I listened to Him, He would tell me that someone needed something, and to take everyone the same thing at the same time; because if they don’t need it, they will. By listening to God, it turned an overwhelming experience into a fully whelming experience. The difference is one overtakes you while the other allows you to still be in control. One causes you to feel alone while the other allows you to see that you are not alone, and that God is with you and keeping you from losing your mind. If you are in a place where you are feeling overwhelmed know that God has you and He can and will keep you. Only thing you have to do is allow Him to.

The Struggle Was Real

GEORGE 24 September 2022 Tracey

Savor the seasonal shift and shine. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14–16). In this new season, get ready to be a blessing by using the gifts that God has blessed you with. Let every good deed you do reflect the God that lives in you. Remember that you are the King’s kid and represent Him and the Kingdom in a way that people will want to know the secret to your success.

Letting your light shine gives you the opportunity to give God all the glory when others inquire or ask for insight on the way you are thriving and how they, too, can live their best life.

Some seasonal shifts will be slow or swift. Savor the season and know that God is with you and all your best days are ahead. In the meantime, continue to stand on God’s Word and know that what He has in store for you will become tangible at the appointed time. Even if your vision coming to pass tarries, wait for it (Habakkuk 2:3). Shout hallelujah and savor the seasonal shift!

Say “so long” to summer and get ready to savor the seasonal shift! The month of September is the time of year that marks a new order. Get ready to set up and soar in September. It is a time when fall is ushered in signaling a new season. This is the perfect time of year to prepare to finish the year out strong and set up for the upcoming year. Seek God for His will for your life. Sort and sear anything that seems to be hindering you and get ready to soar!

trinkets to triumph

Get ready to use the gifts and talents He blessed you with by being a blessing to others and reap the fringe benefits of being a Kingdom citizen at the same time. Remember the joy of the Lord is your strength (Nehemiah 8:10).

Savor the seasonal shift and seek God while He can still be found (Isaiah 55:6). God wants to hear from you. In Psalm 63:1 David said, “Early will I seek thee.” David was determined to seek the Lord early in the morning. He made his Master a priority and sought to spend time with Him early in the morning to set the tone for his day. Mirror his move and make it a point to mediate early each morning. During this time, remember and revisit your goals and God’s promises to you. Remind God of His Word and His promise to you. Revisit or read your vision, dreams, and desires that you wrote at the beginning of the year and check off all the answered prayers, goals, and achievements. During this time rev up, reset, regroup, and plan to go after any goal or promise of God not yet manifested. Seeking your Savior is indeed savoring the seasonal shift soon to come. Savor the seasonal shift by sorting and sifting through all areas of your life that are no longer moving you towards the blessings God has for you. Lay aside every weight (Hebrews 12:1) and hinderance that is keeping you from going after your goals. Like David, encourage yourself in the Lord (1 Samuel 30:6). Say, “peace out” to procrastination and pump yourself up to prosper and live the abundant life God has for you. Ask God to bring to your attention anything that is or could affect the expected end (Jeremiah 29:11) He has for Savoryou.the seasonal shift and soar. Be ready to boldly go forth and reap the harvest God promised you.

I just want to encourage you today to hold on and hold out! I want to encourage you that there is more to your testimony! Continue to seek wisdom. Let wisdom elevate you. Let wisdom honor you. Let wisdom build you. Let wisdom exalt you. Don’t go another breath living your life without wisdom. I promise you, if you ask for wisdom, get wisdom and honor wisdom, your crown will be filled with priceless gems.

I love that the bible is very clear and commands us to get wisdom. There is not another option suitable enough. It doesn’t tell us to try it, buy it, or think about it. No, it says, “Get wisdom.” That encourages me not to see wisdom as an option, but as a lifestyle. I also love the bible because it teaches us in James 1:5, “If anyone of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” How loving is our Heavenly Father that tells us to get wisdom, and if we lack wisdom; all we need to do is ask. I don’t know what life situations you are currently facing, but I want to encourage you to rise up, and GET WISDOM! I have also learned that It’s necessary to surround yourself with others who have wisdom. Let me give you an example on how the wisdom of my father, Jerry O. Pittman, has impacted my life. For those of you who know me personally, you know that I am a true daddy’s girl. My dad and I frequently have deep conversations, and he said to me one day, “I hear you talk about your testimony on how God brought you through two failed marriages, and I am grateful that He did, but as your father, I desire that your testimony does not end there. I also desire for you to testify to a happy and healthy marriage. I desire that you not only testify to how God brought you through, but how God brought you up!” That was the best wisdom my father has given me, and I will carry it with me for the rest of my life. He planted a seed to remind me no matter what I face in life, hold on and hold out. Don’t let your testimony end on just how God brought you through something, but also how he brought you up to a higher level in your purpose. Thank God for His grace that today I can testify being in a healthy, and blissful marriage. If I can go a little deeper, it also made me think, if this was the desire of my earthly father, how much more are the desires of my heavenly father!

7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

We are truly in a season where wisdom is essential. Some of us are dealing with tremendous warfare. Even as I pray and fast this month, it is most urgent for me to learn how to lead a quiet life, even on the battle front. Some of us are feeling on edge. Some of us are dealing with increased temptation. With so many demands, pressures, and stress all around us, we must pray for increased wisdom. Not only must we pray for wisdom, but we must also pray for understanding. Let’s look at one of my favorite scriptures, Proverbs 4:6-9. Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.

9 She will give you a garland to grace your head and present you with a glorious crown.”

8 Cherish her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you.

Grace&Glory 29 The Wisdom Factor! monthly manna

When we look at verse six, we understand that wisdom is something that we can not forsake or abandon. Why, because wisdom will protect you; it will keep you safe from harm or injury; mentally, physically, and emotionally. When we walk away from wisdom, we welcome selfishness, disobedience and worry! When we have wisdom, it will lower our blood pressure, give us peace during a storm, and calm any anxiety. There are many reasons why someone might forsake wisdom but remember, when that happens you open yourself to a vulnerable state of instability. I can’t help but think about some decisions I made in life, and how the spirit of ignorance and pride was more evident, as opposed to wisdom. I wanted things my way, and if I can be completely transparent, there were times when I felt God needed my help. However, once I repented and started seeking the wisdom of God, so many things in my life pivoted in the right direction. Not walking in wisdom placed me in bondage. However, walking in the wisdom of God has given me great liberty. Remember, when you embrace wisdom she yields protection, and when you love wisdom, she will watch over you! If you take a moment to pause, wisdom will speak and provide insight in every area of your life. What I love about wisdom is during times of turbulence and unsettlement, wisdom will lavish calmness, stability, and serenity.

Personal health literacy is the degree to which individuals can find, understand, and use information and services to make informed health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others (CDC, Health people 2023).

Clarify how long you will need to take a medication or participate in other types of therapy. Seek to understand the benefits and disadvantages of the treatment and inquire about alternative therapies that could be used to treat your disorder.

health matters

There are simple ways to improve your health literacy skills and make sure you receive understandable information from your healthcare providers. First, insist that your doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare providers speak to you using language you can understand. Health information can be confusing even for those with advanced literacy skills. It’s easy for those working in health care to forget that they speak in a language that patients can’t always easily understand. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Be assertive to get the information you need. Ask the provider to speak slowly and repeat information as necessary. Consider taking a friend or a loved one to the appointment to also hear what is being said by the provider. This is especially important when the patient is elderly or may have cognitive or sensory deficits that interfere with comprehending the provided information. Get a phone number or email address to use if you have questions after you leave the appointment. Write down a list of questions before you go to each appointment. Use these questions to guide your discussion with the provider. Request written information to support what you were told. Ask the provider for reliable websites and other resources to help explain your condition.

Use technology to increase your understanding of your health condition. Access and review your health information through internet-based patient portals and use mobile apps provided by the health care agency.

Having clear access to and understanding healthcare information can make us feel, do, and live better. Using these health literacy strategies strengthens the communication between doctor and patient. Furthermore, these strategies encourage individuals to advocate for themselves and will help you to gain maximum support from your healthcare provider.

Take the time to demonstrate the correct use of a device or perform a task. Repeat the demonstration several times before your leave the office.

Picture this scenario… You are visiting your doctor for a routine office visit. The doctor is reviewing your health information and status with you. Are you able to understand what the doctor is discussing with you?

Taking care of our health is an essential part of everyday life. Having the ability to understand health information is necessary to maintain our well-being. Health literacy can help individuals manage and prevent health problems and make the healthcare environment easier to navigate. Inadequate health literacy can adversely affect an individual’s health and well-being. Poor health literacy skills can result in poor self-care, increased utilization of health services, worse outcomes, poor adherence to care directives, and decreased likelihood of receiving preventive care and services. Poor communication with patients also contributes to unnecessary readmissions and reduced patient satisfaction with the healthcare provider and agency.
