The olidays

It’s that time of year again. The Hallmark Christmas movies are queued up, people are shopping for Thanksgiving dinner, and the toy and gift advertisements are in full swing. All of these bring joy to many who wait with anticipation for the seasons to change and welcome the food, festivities, family, friends and fun. For some this is a difficult time because they may not be feeling thankful or joyful due to life circumstances that have left them in pain and doubting if they have the strength to make it.

The loss of a loved one, unemployment, health challenges, family tension, selfdoubt and poor choices have many people struggling to be present and engage during the holidays. Loneliness is something many faced before the pandemic and now as well as some people remain cautious about gathering. With this set of circumstances, some have found themselves facing another holiday alone. The “most wonderful time of the year” as the song lyric says can also be the most draining and depressing time for those who may not be able to rejoice.

Facing the holidays requires those who may be struggling, to have a plan to get through the days and weeks to come. Reach out to others and see if they can assist in making this time more peaceful and encouraging; or you be the one to invite a newly separated, divorced or widowed person to your family gathering. Take this time to start new traditions that are meaningful, attend plays, concerts or other cultural events and give back to the community by volunteering. Getting out with others who share your values will help overcome the sadness and anxiety that you can sometimes experience during this time of year. Many churches are open this year and are gathering safely to celebrate the season. You can get through the holidays and face them with confidence, when you make plans, get out of your comfort zone, explore new traditions and connect with others.
