Justification Brings Peace and Joy
5 Therefore,sincewehavebeenjustifiedbyfaith,wehavepeacewithGodthroughourLordJesus Christ. 2Throughhimwealsohaveobtainedaccessbyfaithintothisgraceinwhichwestand.Andwe rejoiceconfidentlyonthebasisofourhopeforthegloryofGod.
3Notonlythis,butwealsorejoiceconfidentlyinoursufferings,becauseweknowthatsuffering producespatientendurance, 4andpatientenduranceproducestestedcharacter,andtestedcharacter produceshope. 5Andhopewillnotputustoshame,becauseGod’slovehasbeenpouredoutintoour heartsbytheHolySpirit,whowas giventous.
God’s Love Is Evident in Christ’s Death for the Ungodly
6Forattheappointedtime,whilewewerestillhelpless,Christdiedfortheungodly. 7Itisrareindeed thatsomeonewilldieforarighteousperson.Perhapssomeonemightactuallygosofarastodiefora personwhohasbeengoodtohim. 8ButGodshowshisownloveforusinthis:Whilewewerestill sinners,Christdiedforus.
9Therefore,sincewehavenowbeenjustifiedbyhisblood,itisevenmorecertainthatwewillbe savedfromGod’swraththroughhim. 10Forif,whilewewereenemies,wewerereconciledtoGodby thedeathofhisSon,itisevenmorecertainthat,sincewehavebeenreconciled,wewillbesavedbyhis life. 11Andnotonlyisthisso,butwealsogoonrejoicingconfidentlyinGodthroughourLordJesus Christ,bywhomwehavenowreceivedthisreconciliation.
Both Adam and Christ Had an Effect on All People
12Sothen,justassinenteredtheworldthroughonemananddeaththrough sin,soalsodeathspread toallpeoplebecauseallsinned. 13Forevenbeforethelawwasgiven,sinwasintheworld.Now,sinis notchargedtoone’saccountifthereisnolaw, 14andyetdeathreignedfromthetimeofAdamtothe timeofMoses,evenoverthosewhosesinwasnotlikethetransgressionofAdam,whoisapatternofthe onewhowastocome.
15Butthegracious giftisnotlikeAdam’strespass.Forifthemanydiedbythetrespassofthisone man,itisevenmorecertainthatGod’sgrace,andthegiftgivenbythegraceoftheonemanJesus Christ,overflowedtothemany!
16Andthegiftisnotliketheeffectoftheoneman’ssin,forthejudgmentthatfollowedtheone trespassresultedinaverdictofcondemnation,butthegraciousgiftthatfollowedmanytrespasses resultedinaverdictofjustification.
17Indeed,ifbythetrespassoftheoneman,deathreignedthroughtheoneman,itisevenmore certainthatthosewhoreceivetheoverflowinggraceofthegiftofrighteousnesswillreigninlife throughtheonemanJesusChrist!
18Sothen,justasonetrespassledtoaverdictofcondemnationforallpeople,soalsoonerighteous verdictledtolife-givingjustificationforallpeople. 19Forjustasthroughthedisobedienceofoneman themanybecamesinners,soalsothroughtheobedienceofonemanthemanywillbecomerighteous.
20Thelawcameintoincreasethetrespass,butwheresinincreased,graceoverflowedmuchmore, 21sothatjustassinreignedindeath,soalsogracewouldreignthroughrighteousness,resultingineternal lifethroughJesusChristourLord.
