Lesson 4 He Has Given Us Work to Do

Worship Read responsively (1 John 4:7-12). Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. Prayer: Lord Jesus, you have cleansed me of all my sin with your holy, precious blood. I am free from sin in your forgiveness. You have overcome death for me, and I am free of fear to hope for life eternal with you. You have freed me also to serve others in love. Open my eyes to see the needs of others. Open my heart to show compassion and kindness. Then free my hands to reach out in love to humbly help, knowing that through me, your disciple, you show your love to others. Hear me and help me for your sake, loving Lord. Amen.

Introduction In a marathon near London, Matt Rees, a Welsh runner, was within two hundred meters of the finish line when he approached a fellow runner who was struggling to finish. The struggling runner, David Wyeth, was so exhausted he had difficulty putting one foot in front of the other to move forward and finish the race. Matt stopped, put his arm around David to help steady his competitor, and then together they started to move forward. As other runners passed them, he continued to support David and helped him go the remaining two hundred meters.
