THE FESTIVAL OF ST. MICHAEL AND
ALL ANGELS

G E L C T , A S 29, 2024

G E L C T , A S 29, 2024
Our mission at Grace is to teach the inspired and inerrant Word of God, to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of the world, and to nurture believers for lives of Christian service.
Check out the GRACE WEBSITE at GraceLutheranSAZ.org
We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises and as you offer him your thanks and praise.
The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are available at the entrances for those who desire them.
Today we are using elements from the Christian Worship (2021) hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video live-streaming.
There is no cost to park in our parking lot during Sunday morning worship services. If you receive a citation by mistake, please let our office staff know so it can be cleared.
“We need better leadership!” Have you ever said that? Perhaps you were frustrated with the direction being taken by some elected official or by management at your workplace or by the coach of your favorite team. You were frustrated because you know that no matter how many resources an organization has, it will flounder if leaders do not lead well: providing direction, training, motivation, coordination, encouragement, and even grace. Leadership is extremely important. And so, there are times we lament, “We need better leadership!”
Jesus Christ is the leader of our congregation, our home, our lives. And his leadership is perfect in every way. Therefore, when things are amiss in any of those arenas, what is needed is not better leadership, but better followership. In this series, we ask Christ to empower us with his Spirit so that we might better follow his lead. May we better reflect the beauty of his life, better make his priorities our own, and better serve our God and neighbor. Our worship during this series will follow this path:
September 1 Followers of Christ Obey His Law from the Heart
September 8 Followers of Christ See the True Purpose of His Power
September 15 Followers of Christ Are Armed for Battle
September 22 Followers of Christ Are Humble Servants
September 29 Followers of Christ Have Powerful Allies
October 6 Followers of Christ Know How to Love Their Families
October 13 Followers of Christ Maintain Proper Priorities
Octobers 20 Followers of Christ Make Selfless Sacrifices
Today we observe the minor festival of St. Michael and All Angels. Since the fifth century, Christians have observed this festival, where we commemorate that God has sent Michael, one of the great archangels described in Scripture, and countless of his fellow angels to protect and serve mankind. Let us rejoice that followers of Christ have powerful allies!

HYMN RESPONSE—Christ, the Lord of Hosts, Unshaken Christian Worship 499
I Walk in Danger All the Way
Hebrews 1:6
Hebrews 1:7
Hebrews 1:14
Psalm 91:11-12
Let all God’s angels worship him. He makes his messengers winds and his ministers flaming fire.
Are not all angels ministering spirits sent out to serve for the benefit of those who are going to inherit salvation?
Yes, he will give a command to his angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
Matthew 18:10
Luke 15:10
Revelation 12:7
Psalm 34:7
See to it that you do not look down on one of these little ones, because I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.
In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.
There was also a war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought with the dragon. The dragon fought back along with his angels.
The Angel of the L camps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.
Luke 2:9-10
Job 38:7
An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified! But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. For behold, I bring you good news of great joy, which will be for all people.”
The morning stars sang loud songs together, and all the angels shouted for joy.
Our sanctuary features a series of stained glass windows which depict various biblical events. This window, which is located near the grand piano, is based on Revelation 12:7-10. Here we see an image of the archangel Michael defeating Satan, who is described as the great dragon. This illustration is based on a series of woodcuts on the book of Revelation published by Albrecht Dürer in 1498.
We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.
Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on my according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.
God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will. Amen.
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Let us pray.
Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals. Mercifully grant that as your holy angels always serve and worship you in heaven, so by your direction they may help and defend us here on earth; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

FIRST READING
2 Kings 6:8-17
8Now when the king of Aram was waging war against Israel, he would make plans with his officials, saying, “My camp will be at such and such a place.”
9But the man of God would send a message to the king of Israel, saying, “Be careful when you pass this place because the Arameans are going down there.” 10So the king of Israel would send scouts to the place that the man of God had pointed out. So the man of God warned him, and he was kept safe and not just once or twice.
11The king of Aram was enraged because of this. He summoned his officials and said to them, “Won't you tell me who of us is for the king of Israel?”
12One of his officials said, “No, my lord the king. It is Elisha, the prophet in Israel, who tells the king of Israel the words which you speak in your bedroom.”
13Then he said, “Go and see where he is. Then I'll send men and capture him.” He was told, “Dothan is where he is.”
14So he sent horses and chariots and a strong force there. They came at night and surrounded the city. 15When the man of God's servant got up early and went out, there were soldiers, horses, and chariots surrounding the city. So his attendant said to Elisha, “Oh no, my lord! What will we do?”
16He answered, “Don't be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
17Then Elisha prayed and said, “O L , open his eyes so that he can see.” Then the L opened the servant's eyes, and he saw that the hills were full of horses and chariots of fire, all around Elisha.
The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
As Elisha fulfilled his mission to proclaim the word and will of God, the angels fulfilled their mission by providing Elisha with protection.
ANTHEM—Extol the Lamb!
Saint Michael and his angel throng in dire conflict fight.
Defend the throne of God, Most High, against the devil’s might.
Extol the Lamb! Our battle cry. Drown out the devil’s pow ’ r.
The banner high, raise to the sky; shout out the vict’ry won!
God’s messenger in robes of light strikes fear in Satan’s heart. With trembling mind he closes rank, refusing to depart.
Extol the Lamb! Our battle cry. Drown out the devil’s pow ’ r.
The banner high, raise to the sky; shout out the vict’ry won!
Swift arrows sharp begin the fray as strength with strength contends. Against the foe Saint Michael stands, God’s people to defend.
Extol the Lamb! Our battle cry. Drown out the devil’s pow ’ r.
The banner high, raise to the sky; shout out the vict’ry won!
Saint Michael and the heav’nly host have won the holy war. We live assured God’s power is supreme forevermore.
Extol the Lamb! Our battle cry. Drown out the devil’s pow ’ r.
The banner high, raise to the sky; shout out the vict’ry won!

When war broke out in heaven, Michael and his angels defeated Satan and his demons.
READING Revelation 12:7-12
7There was also a war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought with the dragon. The dragon fought back along with his angels, 8but he was not strong enough. There was no longer a place for them in heaven. 9The great dragon was thrown down the ancient serpent, the one called the Devil and Satan, the one who leads the whole inhabited earth astray he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
10I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying: Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ, because the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, the one who accuses them before our God day and night.
11 They conquered him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony. They did not love their lives in the face of death.
12 For this reason, rejoice, you heavens and those who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and the sea, for the Devil has gone down to you. He is full of rage, because he knows that his time is short.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL
Luke 10:17-20
17The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name!”
18He told them, “I was watching Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
19Look, I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy. And nothing will ever harm you.
20Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names have been written in heaven.”

We stand out of respect for the words of Christ, our King. The Gospel Acclamation points toward the words of the Gospel.

The Apostles’ Creed developed in the Early Christian Church as a personal confession of faith. It is so named because it confesses the faith taught by the Apostles of Jesus.
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed
O Lord of hosts, eternal, immortal, and invisible King, we praise and thank you for protecting your people through your holy angels, who always behold your face and worship your majesty. Grant, we pray, as you have commanded them to do your will and to serve those who are the heirs of salvation, that they may also care for us that we may be delivered from every peril of body and soul that threatens us. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Be merciful to the people of all nations, O Lord. And since you will reveal your Son Jesus from heaven with his mighty angels to take vengeance on all who have denied you and rejected your love in Christ, extend for the nations their time of grace so that they might come to believe and live eternally. Use us as messengers of your gospel to penetrate the powers of darkness and to bring many to glory. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Look on our own land with your favor. Give our citizens a love for what is true and right. Grant your blessing to all who have authority over us. Prosper our schools and colleges as they train many to proclaim your grace. Bless those who work with their minds and those who labor with their hands so that all human work may benefit your holy Church. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Direct your holy angels to serve all who are in want, trouble, pain, sorrow, disappointment, anxiety, or any other trouble. Comfort them with your power and grace. Grant that your presence may brighten our homes, that children may learn of your tender love, and that all parents may walk in the counsel of your Son. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence.
Silent prayer
May your holy angels serve you as they serve us and at the end of our lives lead them to carry us to the riches of paradise. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Amen.
Brief intercessory prayers may be added in a fitting place.
OFFERTORY:

Members of Grace respond to their Savior’s love with offerings that are given joyfully, generously, regularly, and in a way that is proportionate to how the Lord has blessed them. Their cheerful gifts support the mission and ministry of our congregation. If you are a guest today, please know that we do not expect you to contribute to our congregation’s work. However, if you would like to give an offering to the Lord in response to his love to you, we are happy to receive it and put it to work in God’s kingdom. If you prefer, use your smart phone to give online by scanning this QR code:
Please fill out the Friendship Register located in the red folder at the end of the row and pass it along. Thank you!
HYMN I Walk in Danger All the Way
God of angel armies, let your powerful forces always surround us, so that when we travel, work, or sleep in our beds, we may always be safe under their protecting wings. Let them guard us from physical harm, and give them strength to oppose our spiritual enemies, so that the devil and his demons may have no power over us; in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace. Amen.
Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers. The blessing of Aaron has been spoken over God’s people for over 3,500 years. The L said, “In this way they will put my name on [them], and I will bless them.” Numbers 6:27

Join us on Wednesdays for our study of Church History. We are studying the development of the Wisconsin Synod in the early 1900s, including a federation and then merger with the synods of Minnesota and Michigan. Join us for whichever time fits your schedule best!
What do we know about the 12 men Jesus chose to follow him and then sent out to share the gospel after his ascension into heaven? What does the Bible say? What do historical accounts tell us about them? Get to know “The 12” as you never have before, and learn valuable lessons about your life of following Jesus. Pastor Koehler leads this study on Thursday mornings at 9:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall. Make plans to join him, and invite a friend to join you!
On Saturday, October 12, we are dropping off Spanferkelfest invitations to homes in the neighborhoods around Grace-Tucson. Do you have an hour or two to come help us? Please let Pastor Koehler know by signing the sheet in the Fellowship Hall. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall at 9:00 AM and should be finished by noon. For additional information, please contact Pastor at (520)623-6633 or revrgk3@gracelutheransaz.org.

This Friendship Evangelism event is a great opportunity to invite your unchurched friends and/or neighbors for an evening of fun. There are invitations for you to use at each of the church doors and in the Fellowship Hall.
Would you like to learn more about our risen Savior, about the Bible that tells us about him, and about what Grace Lutheran Church believes and teaches? Our congregation offers a series of Bible-based lessons called Grow in Grace. Grow in Grace also serves as our membership class for those who may be interested in joining the church. If you would be interested in scheduling a Grow in Grace Class, please speak to one of the pastors, or register your interest at GraceLutheranSAZ.org/GIG.
Grace’s columbarium here at Grace-Tucson provides a place where cremated remains may be respectfully stored as they await the resurrection on the last day. Our columbarium is located near the office building, south of the courtyard through the walkway. We have recently located two benches and a statue of Jesus as the Good Shepherd in the area of the columbarium. Thank you to all those who donated in support of the columbarium construction and have reserved niches for their use. Grace members and friends are always invited to visit the area of the columbarium. If you are interested in more information about the columbarium, please ask in the church office.
September is a big anniversary month for our congregation. It was on September 17, 1911 that Grace held its first worship service as a congregation in Tucson. For the church’s 100th anniversary in 2011, Grace began a mission site in Vail to thank God for his blessings to us and to reach a new community with the gospel. In September 2014 Grace merged with Peace Lutheran in Sahuarita (September 8) and Bethlehem Lutheran in Benson (September 29) forming a four-site congregation. Our congregation and we as individual members have been blessed by God in so many ways over the years! Our communities have also been blessed as we have shared our Savior with them. As we celebrate our 10-year anniversary as a four-location, multi-site congregation, give thanks to the Lord! From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. John 1:16
Cinda Drescher is Grace’s Bible-based Counselor. She is on staff at Grace and works in the counseling building located in the Grace-Tucson parking lot. She typically works at the counseling building two days each week. To schedule an appointment, it is easiest to text her at (520)581-4714 or email at Cinda@GraceLutheranSAZ.org. Because she is on staff at Grace and supported by the congregation’s Ministry Spending Plan, there is no charge for anyone who makes an appointment with her. She is happy to meet with anyone whether they are members of Grace/WELS or not. Cinda not only has a WELS Bible-based Therapist certification, she holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work, a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology, along with certifications in Trauma and Domestic Violence.

Grace has served college students in Tucson since the congregation began in 1911. Our church has had a formal ministry to college students for at least 70 years, making campus ministry Grace’s longest-running outreach program. We have a newly-refurnished Student Center in the lower level of the church at Grace-Tucson and a pastor who spends a significant amount of time serving the students and reaching out with the gospel to those who don’t know their Savior. Pastor Koehler currently serves as campus pastor. TCM is also an official University of Arizona club. Officers include Josiah Rautenberg (president), Mark Rutschow, (secretary), David Kosanke (treasurer), and Dr. Heidi Kosanke (faculty advisor). Josiah and Mark also serve as TCM student assistants, helping Pastor Koehler with day-to-day campus ministry items. Important components of this ministry are Sunday night Bible studies, activities, and opportunities to serve. Student benefits include daily access to the student center, parking in the Grace lot, and professional and pastoral counseling.
