THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

WORSHIP NOTES

We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises, and as you offer him your thanks and praise.

When the truth is hard to hear, the first temptation is to deny it. We cannot do that with Jesus’ teaching, for he never lies. When the truth is hard to hear, the second temptation is to simply ignore it. To do that with Jesus is to court eternal death. Thus, Jesus’ words contain an urgent warning: Listen! Take to heart what Jesus says! For his Word, though it contains hard truth, gives eternal life.

Welcome to Grace!

Check out the GRACE WEBSITE at GraceLutheranSAZ.org

“Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem” (Luke 13:22). Jesus knows that when he gets to Jerusalem, he is going to die. If you expect Jesus to use these final teaching opportunities to share happy thoughts, you don’t know him well. With a sense of extreme urgency, Jesus shares truths we need to hear, even if we do not want to hear them. As Jesus teaches hard truth, he challenges conventional wisdom. He reverses the normal and natural order of things. This should not surprise us, considering this Teacher’s life and work are the opposite of what one would expect.

Our mission at Grace is to teach the inspired and inerrant Word of God, to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of the world, and to nurture believers for lives of Christian service.

The worship service is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. Those wishing to leave an offering can do so at the exit today or give online at www.GraceLutheranSAZ.org/give. (You can also scan the QR code to the right to access the online giving page.)

OUR WORSHIP SERIES—HARD TRUTH

The First Will Be Last; the Last Will Be First The Humble Will Be Exalted; the Exalted Will Be Humbled Put Down What You Love; Pick Up What You Loathe

We Want Peace, but God’s Word Divides

The Found Are Left; the Lost Are Found Serve God with Money; You Can’t Serve God and Money What Seems to Help in Life Fails in Death; What Seems to Fail in Life Helps in Death

The hard truth we will hear today is this: wandering around spiritually lost puts you in the worst place of all. Fortunately, Jesus does not leave us alone in our lostness. He relentlessly seeks us. He involves the rest of the Christian community in seeking the lost and rejoicing over the found. Please join us each week as we look at these hard truth teachings of Jesus.

1

Today we are using elements from the new Christian Worship hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal pocket in each row. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. We hope this will help our members and friends become better acquainted with these new books.

INVOCATION

If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

How Great Thou Art

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” James 5:16

Christ gave the authority to forgive the sins of penitent sinners to his church: “Whenever you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven.”

Amen.

Let us confess our sins to the Lord.

1 John 1:8 9

The words of the invocation remind us that the God we meet and worship here is the true and triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

CONFESSION OF SINS

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

Christian Worship 612

Holy God, gracious Father, I am sinful by nature and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should. I deserve your punishment both now and forever. But Jesus, my Savior, paid for my sins with his innocent suffering and death. Trusting in him, I pray: God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the (+) Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Silence for meditation and reflection

Congregation: Amen.

For the peace of the whole world, for the well being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.

Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

3

For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

Amen.

1 The L said to me, “Go again. Show love to a woman who is loved by another man, a woman who keeps committing adultery. Show love just as the L loves the people of Israel, even though they keep turning to other gods and loving the raisin cakes.”

The L called Hosea to seek his adulterous wife and love her again. This served as an object lesson, showing our God is a God who seeks and redeems those who are lost. THE WORD

Let us pray. Lord, we pray that your mercy and grace may always go before and follow after us that, loving you with undivided hearts, we may be ready for every good and useful work; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

2 So I bought her for myself for fifteen pieces of silver and nine bushels of barley. 3 I said to her, “You will stay with me for many days. You must not be promiscuous. You must not be with any other man, and I will also be for you.”

4 So the people of Israel will live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred memorial stones, and without the special vest or family idols. 5 Afterward the people of Israel will return and seek the L their God and David their king. They will come trembling to the L and to his goodness in the latter days.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

SECOND READING

If you forgive anyone anything, I do too. To be sure, if I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven it in the presence of Christ for your sake, 11 so that Satan would not take advantage of us. We are certainly not unaware of his schemes.

5

Now if anyone has caused sorrow, he has not done it to me, but to all of you to some extent (not to overstate it). 6 This punishment inflicted on such a person by the majority is enough, 7 so that instead you should rather forgive and comfort him, or else such a person could be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. 8 For that reason, I urge you to reaffirm your love for him. 9 In fact, this was also the purpose of my writing: I wanted to know the result of your being tested, that is, if you are obedient in all things.

LORD’S PRAYER

Luke 15:1-10

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

3 He told them this parable: 4 “Which one of you, if you had one hundred sheep and lost one of them, would not leave the ninety nine in the wilderness and go after the one that was lost until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls together his friends and his neighbors, telling them, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found my lost sheep!’ 7 I tell you, in the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety nine righteous people who do not need to repent.

“Or what woman who has ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, would not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she finds it, she calls together her friends and neighbors and says, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found the lost coin.’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

GOSPEL

Apostles’ Creed

The Apostles’ Creed developed in the Early Christian Church as a personal confession of faith. It is so named because it confesses the faith taught by the Apostles of Jesus.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

During the singing of this hymn, children ages 1 8 are excused to attend Children’s Church in the CLC Building. Parents can pick up their children there followingservice.the

CONFESSION OF FAITH

HYMN OF THE DAY—Jesus Sinners Does Receive

Luke 15:1-10 Lost vs. Found

SERMON

Eternal Lord, give us peace as we ponder the good news that you forgive our sins in Christ. Lead us to see clearly the path you have laid out for us.

Bless our land with peace and prosperity so that the gospel may be proclaimed to all.

8 Brief inprayersintercessorymaybeaddedafittingplace.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence.

Silent prayer

Give us passion to share the story of your love with our family and friends. Overcome unbelief, and open the hearts of people everywhere to believe the good news that Jesus has forgiven their sins and opened the gates of heaven.

Protect us from the temptations that surround us; give us pure hearts and minds.

Guard and guide the families of our congregation. Lead husbands and wives to love each other with commitment, respect, and patience. Help parents to grasp the eternal value of keeping their children close to Jesus all their lives. Grant joy to those who are single, and make them a blessing to others.

Provide courage and compassion to all who preach and teach your Word. Fill them with a love like yours as they proclaim your grace to us and all people. Move us to love all ministers of the Word wherever they serve.

Extend your healing power to those who are sick and suffering in body or mind. Give patience and compassion to all who care for the sick and dying. Lift the eyes of the distressed to your love in Christ.

Provide wisdom and insight to those who make laws and set policies. Give us respect for those who protect us from crime. Lead us to value the rights of our fellow citizens and to defend those who cannot defend themselves.

Fill us with joy over every sinner who repents and comes to trust in you.

Gracious God, you govern and direct all things and you love all people. Hear our prayers, spoken and silent, and answer them in your wisdom and grace. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Work in us so that we believe and live the Word we have heard today.

Amen.

Our Sunday morning Bible Study is on the Book of Revelation. This is the most requested Bible Study year after year because of the complex pictures and the many misunderstandings about the final book of the Bible. This study is designed to walk you through the book of Revelation in great detail while keeping the main theme of Jesus’ victory at the forefront of every lesson. Even if you haven’t joined us for Bible Study in the past, you may want to join us for this study. Class is held at 9:00 AM in the CLC gymnasium.

Tucson Campus Ministry Bible Study: TONIGHT

Grace Moments and Meditations daily devotional books are on the Welcome Desk in the entryway.

When life knocks you down, what do you do? Do you get back up? Do you stay down grumbling and complaining? Do you rejoice? It may seem backwards to rejoice when you experience hardship, but that is exactly what James 1:1 18 encourages us to do. Join us tonight at 7:00 PM in the Student Center at Grace Tucson for TCM’s Bible Study “Trials & Temptations” as we begin our unit on the book of James to discover what real faith for real life looks like when we come across trials and temptations. Refreshments and games are also provided.

10 TODAY

We would like to have a record of both members and guests who are worshiping with us. Please sign the red Friendship Register book located along the center aisle in the hymnal rack.

Children’s Church

Children ages 1 8 will be dismissed from our worship service today during the hymn before the sermon to attend Children’s Church. Parents, following worship, please pick your child up from the gymnasium in the CLC building.

Sunday Morning Bible Study

Friendship Register

“Why doesn’t he answer my prayers?” Each question is handled in just a handful of pages, so it is easy to jump into the study at any time, even if you can’t make it each week. The book is provided at no cost to you and is yours to keep. Invite a friend and Join Pastor Koehler for what should be a very helpful study for us and for those we have discussions with about such things. This class meets on Thursdays at 9:00 AM in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall.

Our study of “Prepared to Answer,” a book by Pastor Mark Paustian, a professor at Martin Luther College, tackles common questions and viewpoints that come from nonChristians and even Christians on subjects like: “Do you really believe in miracles?” “But I’m pro-choice.” “There are no moral absolutes.” “There are things I’ll never be able to forgive.” “With so many interpretations and denominations, who can say who is right?”

Would you like to learn more about our risen Savior Jesus, about the Bible that tells us about him, and about what Grace Lutheran Church believes and teaches? Our congregation offers a series of Bible based lessons called Grow in Grace. Grow in Grace also serves as our membership class for those who may be interested in joining the church. If you would be interested in scheduling a Grow in Grace Class, please speak to Pastor Heiman, or register your interest at GraceLutheranSAZ.org/ GIG.

Women’s Bible Study: Thursday at Tucson

The Church History Bible study meets on Wednesdays at 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM in the Grace Tucson Fellowship Hall. We hope you will join us as we continue discussing the Church during the Enlightenment (approximately 1650 1800 A.D.).

Wednesday Bible Study

Our midweek Bible study topic is entitled The Precious Position of a Woman of God. It might surprise some to know how highly God speaks of women in the Bible and how much he prizes them. The secular world certainly does not characterize Christianity and the Bible that way. Perhaps you have not always felt that women are precious to God or have been uncertain about the God-given roles for men and women. All are invited to join Pastor Heiman for a comprehensive look at the many things God has to say about the importance and value of women and get to know some of the Bible’s notable women. Please join us on Wednesday at 10:00 AM in the church entryway.

It is now easier than ever to support Grace members attending WELS schools in Arizona! If you owe taxes to the state of Arizona, you can, up to certain limits, donate to a school tuition organization and receive a dollar for dollar credit on your state income taxes. This program has been in place for many years already, but our partner, the Arizona Christian School Tuition Organization (ACSTO), has made it even easier by allowing you to designate "Grace Lutheran Southern AZ Church Members." All money they receive designated in this way (other than a percentage for expenses) will be used to award scholarships to our students who are attending Redeemer Lutheran School or Arizona Lutheran Academy. Using this designation will help us track how well we are making use of the resources available to us and will help make sure that our students are all receiving the help that they need. You may not be thinking about taxes right now, but if you have never used this program before, this would be a great time to learn more. Ask for help, check out the ACSTO website (ACSTO.org), or even consider having part of your paycheck withheld to make use of the tax credit. Jeff Weinstein, a member of Grace, is ACSTO's representative for WELS schools. You can reach him at 520-9097649 or jweinstein@acsto.org with your questions.

Thank you to those who use AmazonSmile to benefit Grace with their online shopping! To date our congregation has received $1,703.85 in AmazonSmile donations.

For those unfamiliar with the program, AmazonSmile allows Amazon shoppers to designate a charity to receive a portion of their sales (0.5%). Everything else is the same as shopping with Amazon (the same products, prices, and service). To use this program, simply start your shopping at smile.amazon.com. You can find Grace by searching for “Grace Lutheran Church Tucson.” You can also use Grace’s start page to sign in: https://smile.amazon.com/ch/86 0133394. This is a simple way to support Grace without any additional spending. Thank you for your support!

Teachers at Esmond Station School (the location where our Vail members worship), have started an after school “Foodie Club” for the students to teach them about different cultural meals.
