G E L C T , A A 14, 2022 THE TENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Jesus knows that when he gets to Jerusalem, he is going to die. If you expect Jesus to use these final teaching opportunities to share happy thoughts, you don’t know him well. With a sense of extreme urgency, Jesus shares truths we need to hear, even if we do not want to hear them. As Jesus teaches hard truth, he challenges conventional wisdom. He reverses the normal and natural order of things. This should not surprise us, considering this Teacher’s life and work are the opposite of what one would expect. When the truth is hard to hear, the first temptation is to deny it. We cannot do that with Jesus’ teaching, for he never lies. When the truth is hard to hear, the second temptation is to simply ignore it. To do that with Jesus is to court eternal death. Thus, Jesus’ words contain an urgent warning: Listen! Take to heart what Jesus says! For his Word, though it contains hard truth, gives eternal life. We Want Peace, but God’s Word Divides
Our mission at Grace is to teach the inspired and inerrant Word of God, to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of the world, and to nurture believers for lives of Christian service. Check out the GRACE WEBSITE at GraceLutheranSAZ.org
The First Will Be Last; the Last Will Be First The Humble Will Be Exalted; the Exalted Will Be Humbled Put Down What You Love; Pick Up What You Loathe The Found Are Left; the Lost Are Found Serve God with Money; You Can’t Serve God and Money What Seems to Help in Life Fails in Death; What Seems to Fail in Life Helps in Death
The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are available at the entrances for those who desire them. Today we are using elements from the new Christian Worship hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. We hope this will help our members and friends become better acquainted with these new books. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video live streaming.
Welcome to Grace!
OUR WORSHIP SERIES HARD TRUTH
We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises, and as you offer him your thanks and praise.
“Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem” (Luke 13:22).
The hard truth we will hear today is this: total peace is impossible for the believer to achieve. Those who embrace the gospel in faith will inevitably face hostility and opposition. Following Jesus will come at a price. Yet he promises us our perseverance will be rewarded. Please join us each week as we look at these hard truth teachings of Jesus. Worship Notes

CONFESSION OF SINS
The vocalist will sing stanzas 1 and 2. Please join in singing the remainder of the hymn.
The words of the invocation remind us that the God we meet and worship here is the true and triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 1 John 1:8 9 “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” James 5:16 2

OPENINGWELCOMEHYMN
If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
Holy God, gracious Father, I am sinful by nature and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should. I deserve your punishment both now and forever. But Jesus, my Savior, paid for my sins with his innocent suffering and death. Trusting in him, I pray: God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Let us confess our sins to the Lord.

DECLARATION OF GRACE
This song continues on the next page.
Amen. LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie
Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the (+) Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Please join in singing the response below following a brief introduction.
Christ gave the authority to forgive the sins of penitent sinners to his church: “Whenever you forgive people’s sins, they areMarkJohnforgiven.”20:2310:47 Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. In peace let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For the peace of the whole world, for the well being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.
Amen. GLORY BE TO GOD Gloria in Excelsis

25 I have heard what the prophets who prophesy lies in my name have said. They say, “I have had a dream! I have had a dream!” 26 How long will this be in the hearts of these lying prophets? These prophets proclaim the fantasies of their own hearts. 27 They think they can make my people forget my name with the dreams each one tells his neighbor, the way their fathers forgot my name because of Baal. 28 Let the prophet who has a dream tell his dream. But let the one who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has chaff to do with grain? declares the L . 29 Is not my word like a fire? declares the L , and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces? The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

24 Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the L . Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the L .

23 Am I a God who is only nearby, declares the L , and not a God far away?

4 You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood in your fight against sin. 5 Have you also forgotten the encouragement that addresses you as sons? My son, do not regard the Lord’s discipline lightly, and do not become weary of his correction.
7 Endure suffering as discipline. God is dealing with you as sons. Is there a son whose father does not discipline him? 8 If you are not disciplined (and all of us have received it), then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 In addition, we have earthly fathers who disciplined us, and we respected them. Should we not submit even more to the Father of the spirits and live? 10 They disciplined us for a little while, according to what seemed best to them, but God disciplines us for our good, so that we may have a share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant when it is happening, but painful, yet later it yields a peaceful harvest of righteousness for those who have been trained by it.
6 For the Lord disciplines the one whom he loves, and he corrects every son he accepts.

SECOND READING
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us get rid of every burden and the sin that so easily ensnares us, and let us run with patient endurance the race that is laid out for us. 2 Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, who is the author of our faith and the one who brings it to its goal. In view of the joy set before him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of God’s throne. 3 Carefully consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinful people, so that you do not grow weary and lose heart.

CONFESSION OF FAITH Apostles’ Creed
HYMN OF THE DAY—O Holy Spirit, Enter In Christian Worship 590 SERMON Hebrews 12:1-13 Let Us Run Our Race Please stand
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
The Apostles’ Creed developed in the Early Christian Church as a personal confession of faith. It is so named because it confesses the faith taught by the Apostles of Jesus.
Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence. Silent prayer Gracious God, you govern and direct all things and you love all people. Hear our prayers, spoken and silent, and answer them in your wisdom and grace. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
Guard and guide the families of our congregation. Lead husbands and wives to love each other with commitment, respect, and patience. Help parents to grasp the eternal value of keeping their children close to Jesus all their lives. Grant joy to those who are single, and make them a blessing to others. Protect us from the temptations that surround us; give us pure hearts and minds.
9
Provide courage and compassion to all who preach and teach your Word. Fill them with a love like yours as they proclaim your grace to us and all people. Move us to love all ministers of the Word wherever they serve.
Fill us with joy over every sinner who repents and comes to trust in you. Extend your healing power to those who are sick and suffering in body or mind. Give patience and compassion to all who care for the sick and dying. Lift the eyes of the distressed to your love in Christ.
Brief intercessory prayers may be added in a fitting place.
Provide wisdom and insight to those who make laws and set policies. Give us respect for those who protect us from crime. Lead us to value the rights of our fellow citizens and to defend those who cannot defend themselves. Bless our land with peace and prosperity so that the gospel may be proclaimed to all. Give us passion to share the story of your love with our family and friends. Overcome unbelief, and open the hearts of people everywhere to believe the good news that Jesus has forgiven their sins and opened the gates of heaven.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Eternal Lord, give us peace as we ponder the good news that you forgive our sins in Christ. Lead us to see clearly the path you have laid out for us. Work in us so that we believe and live the Word we have heard today.
10
Please stand PRAYER Blessed Lord, you have given us your Holy Scriptures for our learning. May we so hear them, read, learn, and take them to heart that, being strengthened and comforted by your holy Word, we may cling to the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
OFFERTORY: Afflicted Saint, To Christ Draw Near Constance Dever & Bob Kauflin The text of this hymn is printed below for your silent meditation. It can also be found in the hymnal (#867). Afflicted saint, to Christ draw near, your Savior’s gracious promise hear; his faithful Word you can believe, that as your days your strength shall be. So, sing with joy, afflicted one; the battle’s fierce, but the victory’s won! God shall supply all that you need; yes, as your days your strength shall be.
Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.

NEW Women’s Bible Study: Thursday This Thursday we will begin studying a book called “Prepared to Answer” by Pastor Mark Paustian, a professor at Martin Luther College. Common questions and viewpoints that come from non Christians (and even Christians) will be addressed in a handful of pages each and provide ways we can be prepared to answer them. Here is a small sampling of subjects from the book: “Do you really believe in miracles?” “But I’m pro-choice” “There are no moral absolutes” “There are things I’ll never be able to forgive” “With so many interpretations and denominations, who can say who is right?” “Why doesn’t he answer my prayers?” The book for the study is provided at no cost to you and is yours to keep. Join Pastor Koehler for what should be a very helpful study for us and for those we have discussions with about such things. You are always welcome to bring friends, including those who are not Grace members. This class meets on Thursdays at 9:00 AM in the Grace Tucson Fellowship Hall.
NEW Sunday Morning Bible Study “God just wants me to be happy.” “God helps those who help themselves.” These and other popular, positive, catchy statements might sound good, but do they really fit with what the Bible says? Last Sunday we started a brand new Bible Study topic, “10 Lies About God.” This study will help us respond to false teachings about God and to defend what the Bible teaches. Now would be an excellent time to make this study a part of your Sunday routine! Please join us at 9:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall.
Our Church History Bible Study will meet on Wednesday at 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM in the Grace Tucson Fellowship Hall. We hope you will join us as we continue discussing the Church during the Enlightenment (approximately 1650 - 1800 A.D.).

Children’s Bible Hour: TODAY All children, ages 3 8th grade, are invited to attend Children’s Bible Hour on Sunday mornings. The children will begin all together in the main area of our Education Building at 8:45 AM for music and an opening devotion and from there will be divided into age-based classrooms. Parents can meet their children after class at their classrooms or in the courtyard. If you have any questions about Children’s Bible Hour, please contact Pastor Patoka.

The Ladies’ Fellowship Group will be meeting THIS Thursday, August 18, at 10:15 AM (following the Women’s Bible Study) in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall. They will enjoy the movie “Patterns of Evidence: The Exodus.” This movie investigates the archeological evidence supporting the Exodus. Discussion and fellowship will follow. Please bring drinks and a sack lunch. Ladies from ALL sites are welcome to join in the fun! Please contact Lois Thornton at (520)323 8772 if you have any questions. In September the group will discuss the book, “The Case for Christ” by Lee Strobel. Please read or listen to an audio version of this book before we gather on September 15.
