Worship Notes We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises, and as you oﬀer him your thanks and praise.

The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are available at the entrances for those who desire them. Today we are using elements from the new Christian Worship hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. We hope this will help our members and friends become better acquainted with these new books. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video live-streaming. OUR WORSHIP SERIES—FOCUSED A unique feature of Luke’s Gospel is the section in the middle often called “the travel narrative.” This lengthy section began in chapter 9 when Luke told us that Jesus “resolutely set out for Jerusalem.” While there are many events and side trips that occur during this travel narrative, Luke regularly stresses that nothing is going to dissuade Jesus from going to Jerusalem where he will fulfill his life’s mission. Jesus was very focused. Jesus’ mission and the purpose of this journey was not to gain an earthly crown. Throughout this travel narrative, Jesus makes clear that this world was not his real home. He teaches that this world is not our real home either. Jesus is focused on heaven. His mission is to get us there by going to Jerusalem and making the ultimate sacrifice to pay for our sin. Nothing would stop him. “He set his face like flint,” Isaiah tells us. Jesus was focused.

As we watch the focused actions of our Savior—as we focus carefully on his words—something wonderful happens. Jesus gives focus to our lives. We ﬁnally see things clearly: how to love our neighbor, the true purpose of worship, what is treasure (and what is not). In this series, as Christ speaks to us through his Word, may he make us properly focused. Focused Love Finds a Neighbor Rather Than Avoiding One Focused Worship Seeks Service from Jesus More than Service for Jesus Focused Living Properly Values Earthly Wealth Focused Living Properly Values Heavenly Treasure Today, we will learn that Jesus’ followers don’t reject wealth or despise it, but they value earthly wealth properly and understand what it can and cannot do. CONFESSION OF SINS 1 John 1:8-9

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. Let us confess our sins to the Lord.

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” James 5:16

Holy God, gracious Father, I am sinful by nature and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should. I deserve your punishment both now and forever. But Jesus, my Savior, paid for my sins with his innocent suﬀering and death. Trusting in him, I pray: God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Christ gave the authority to forgive the sins of penitent sinners to his church: “Whenever you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven.” John 20:23

Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacriﬁce for the sins of the whole world. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the (+) Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Mark 10:47 Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian Church.

FIRST READING 1

Ecclesiastes 1:1-2, 12-14; 2:18-26

The words of Ecclesiastes, David’s son, king in Jerusalem.

“Nothing but vapor,” Ecclesiastes said. “Totally vapor. Everything is just vapor that vanishes.” 12

I, Ecclesiastes, have been king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 I applied my heart to seek out and explore with wisdom everything done under the sky. (What a burdensome task God has given the children of Adam to keep them busy!) 14 I have seen all the actions done under the sun, and, look, it is all nothing but vapor. It is all chasing the wind. 18

I also hated all the results of my hard work, for which I worked so hard under the sun, since I must leave it all to the man who comes after me. 19 And who knows—will he be wise, or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the results of my hard work, for which I worked so hard and so wisely, under the sun. This too is vapor that vanishes. 20

So I changed my course, and my heart began to despair over all my hard work at which I worked so hard under the sun. 21 Sure, there may be a man who has worked hard—wisely, aptly, and skillfully. But he must hand over whatever he accumulated by all his hard work to a man who has not worked hard for it. This too is vapor. It’s so unfair! 22 For what does a man gain through all his hard work, through all the turmoil in his heart, as he works so hard under the sun? 23

Pain ﬁlls all his days. His occupation is frustration. Even at night his heart does not rest. This too is vapor.

There is nothing better for a man than to eat and to drink and to ﬁnd joy in his work. This too, I saw, is from God’s hand. 25 For who can eat or enjoy himself apart from him? 26 Yes, God gives wisdom, knowledge, and happiness to the man whom he considers good, but to the person who goes on sinning God gives the task of gathering and collecting, but only so that he can give it all to a person whom God considers good. If life does not consist in the abundance of one’s possessions, then of what does life consist? Paul tells us— the fact that in baptism we died and were raised with Christ.

Therefore, because you were raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5

So put to death whatever is worldly in you: sexual immorality, uncleanness, lust, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry. 6 It is because of these things that the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience. 7 You too once walked in these things, when you were living in them. 8

Greed’s folly is felt in life and will be exposed in death. Through a parable, Jesus gives us a strong warning against greed.

CONFESSION OF FAITH I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suﬀered under Pontius Pilate, was cruciﬁed, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Apostles’ Creed

The Apostles’ Creed developed in the Early Christian Church as a personal confession of faith. It is so named because it confesses the faith taught by the Apostles of Jesus.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Eternal God, with your almighty power and wisdom you guide and guard the universe you created. Every planet and every star remain in place according to your design. You know the far reaches of space and observe even heavenly lights we cannot see. Lead us to marvel every day at the wonders of your creation. You created our planet to proclaim the depth of your majesty and love. At your command the world turns, the breezes blow, and the waters surge. Here you placed the crown of your creation, your human creatures, and gave us the bounty of the earth for our provision and pleasure. Help us to value and protect the blessings of nature you have given us. You have created the family, arranged society, and established governments to provide order and stability in our lives. You command us to respect and support the authorities that function with your permission. You teach us to love all people, those who are like us and those who are not, and to care for those in need of help. Move us to love others as your Son loved us. Guard and guide us when you allow serious diseases, financial uncertainty, and social unrest to torment our country. You surely punish the wicked in troubled times, but you also call people to turn away from sin to your forgiving love. Lead us to repent and examine our thoughts, words, and actions. Enable the medical community to discover cures for diseases and plagues that afflict our planet. Preserve the lives of your people that we may continue to share your love with others. Spare the lives of those who do not know you so they may find you and be saved. Give us confidence to place our bodies and lives into your protecting hand.

Allow farms and factories, businesses and institutions, schools and communities to prosper and provide the blessings you desire to bestow on us. Use the blessing of wealth to enable us to spread the gospel throughout the world. Teach us to be faithful stewards of your blessings and lead us to manage them according to your will. Free us from all thoughts, words, and actions of prejudice and pride. Help us to see in all people the faces of those who have been redeemed by the innocent life and precious blood of your Son, Jesus Christ, who died and rose for everyone from every nation under heaven.

Help us to overcome the racial tensions that plague our land. 9

Give wisdom to the leaders of our land and bend their will to yours. Drive away partisan spirit and harsh rhetoric that often deepen the divisions among people. Help our nation ﬁnd contentment in helping and protecting one another. Guide us so we may avoid the pitfalls of anger and arrogance. Keep in your care all those who are sick and suﬀering in these troubled times. Restore health according to your will. Comfort those you are leading to heaven with the anticipation of their eternal home. Move us to pray fervently for those in need. Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence. Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.

The blessing of Aaron has been spoken over God’s people for over 3,500 years. The L said, “In this way they will put my name on [them], and I will bless them.” Numbers 6:27

BLESSING

Sunday Morning Bible Study

We are currently studying who Jesus is, what he has done for us, and what he is doing now. This material is taken from our Grow in Grace Class. We use our Grow in Grace Class as a membership class, but it is also a great review and an opportunity to ask questions. Now would be an excellent time to make this study a part of your Sunday routine! Please join us at 9:00 AM in the GraceTucson Fellowship Hall.

Children’s Bible Hour Summer Session: TODAY

Calling all investigators! Children ages 3-12 and invited to join us on Sunday mornings throughout the summer for Children’s Bible Hour. We are using a special summer curriculum called “Faith Case: Fruit of the Spirit.” This fast-paced, videobased program will teach us how our “fruits” show that we have Jesus in our hearts. Each week, we will receive assignments from “The Commissioner,” watch the antics of “Adam Apple,” and engage in games and activities that will reinforce the truth we are learning that week. Parents can drop-off their children in the Education Building at 8:45 on Sunday mornings and pick-them up again at 9:45. All of the children will remain together in a larger group for these sessions. Older children are invited to come help with the games and activities. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Patoka.

Lifeliners F3: Tonight

The Lifeliners (our high school youth group) have been getting together this summer on select evenings for Food, Faith, & Fun (F3) in the Grace-Tucson Student Center! Our last Lifeliners F3 will be this evening from 6:00-8:30 PM where we’ll enjoy Eegee’s, a Bible Study called “Looking Up” about worship, and the award-winning party game “Wits & Wagers.” RSVPs are appreciated and can be sent to Pastor Patoka.

ANNOUNCEMENTS Church History Bible Study: Wednesday

Our Church History Bible Study will resume this Wednesday, August 3, at 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall. We hope you will join us as we continue discussing the Church during the Enlightenment (approximately 1650 - 1800 A.D.).

Women’s Bible Study: Thursday

The Precious Position of a Woman of God study will be ending soon. We will then be working through a book called “Prepared to Answer” by Pastor Mark Paustian, a professor at Martin Luther College. Common questions and viewpoints that come from non-Christians (and even Christians) will be addressed in a handful of pages each and provide ways we can be prepared to answer them. Here is a small sampling of subjects from the book: “Do you really believe in miracles?” “But I’m prochoice” “There are no moral absolutes” “There are things I’ll never be able to forgive” “With so many interpretations and denominations, who can say who is right?” “Why doesn’t he answer my prayers?” The book for the study is provided at no cost to you and is yours to keep. Watch for a start date and plan to join Pastor Koehler for what should be a very helpful study for us and for those we have discussions with about such things. You are always welcome to bring friends, including those who are not Grace members. This class meets on Thursday at 9:00 AM in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall.

Summer Fun Night: August 12

Join us for some family fun at our Back to School Trivia Night on Friday, August 12, at 6:30 PM at Grace-Tucson. Come for some friendly competition and test your knowledge in various games of trivia. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Members from ALL sites are encouraged to attend! This is an excellent opportunity to invite your unchurched friends and family so they can get to know us in a relaxed setting. There are invitation postcards available for you to use at each door to church and in the Fellowship Hall. This evening concludes our “Summer Fun Nights” series of events that were held throughout the summer. We hope you have enjoyed these events and much as we loved organizing them!

Ladies’ Fellowship Group: August 18

The Ladies’ Fellowship Group will be meeting on Thursday, August 18, at 10:15 AM (following the Women’s Bible Study) in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall. They will enjoy the movie “Patterns of Evidence: The Exodus.” This movie investigates the archeological evidence supporting the Exodus. Discussion and fellowship will follow. In September the group will discuss the book, “The Case for Christ” by Lee Strobel. Please read or listen to an audio version of this book before we gather on September 15.
