Worship Notes We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises, and as you oﬀer him your thanks and praise.

The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are available at the entrances for those who desire them. Today we are using elements from the new Christian Worship hymnal. You will ﬁnd these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. We hope this will help our members and friends become better acquainted with these new books. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video live-streaming. OUR THEME FOR TODAY—ROAD TRIP: Route 3:16 During Summer Bible Camp this past week, the children pretended to travel by car to ﬁve interesting destinations in the United States. From God’s Word, they learned that: ·

The Grand Canyon reminds us of the huge gap sin causes between sinners and God. Jesus closed the gap by forgiving our sins through his life, death, and resurrection. (The Grand Canyon)

The Arch is impressive, and we are impressed with many things people can do. But Jesus can do anything! (The St. Louis Gateway Arch)

Favorite vacation spots, riches, and other joys of life on earth should never come before our love for the Savior. (Walt Disney World)

The Statue of Liberty reminds people of the kindness and freedom found in America. God’s Word reminds us to show kindness to others and to tell them of the freedom they have through Jesus. (The Statue of Liberty)

Nature is full of beautiful sights, but the greatest sights are still ahead. Jesus will return in glory to take us to heaven! (The Rocky Mountains)

In our special worship service today, we will visit these destinations and hear about these same Bible truths. The children who attended Summer Bible Camp will present some of the songs they learned in the 10:00 AM worship service.

The words of the invocation remind us that the God we meet and worship here is the true and triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

CONFESSION OF SINS If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

1 John 1:8-9

If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. Let us confess our sins to the Lord. Holy God, gracious Father, I am sinful by nature and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should. Our gracious Father in heaven has been merciful to us. He sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, who gave his life as the atoning sacriﬁce for the sins of the whole world. Christ gave the authority to forgive the sins of penitent sinners to his church: “Whenever you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven.” John 20:23

Mark 10:47 Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian Church.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Eternal Father, your Word is a lamp for our feet and a light to our path. You inspired the Scriptures for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that your servants might be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Brief intercessory prayers may be added in a ﬁtting place.

Lead us to love your Word more and more and to receive your message with great eagerness. You have given us your Word that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing we may have life in his name. Enable us to see the wonders of your love in Christ from the beginning to the end of your holy book. Help us to see Jesus, the pioneer and perfector of our faith. Work in all your people, especially in parents, the resolve and patience to teach little children the simple truths about the Savior who loves them. Walk with us as we take our children to the manger, the cross, and the empty tomb. Let them find Jesus in stories, songs, and prayers. Move us to bring up our children in the training and instruction of the Lord. Provide wisdom and commitment to teachers who train our young people in Sunday Schools and youth Bible classes. Deepen their knowledge of your Word as they prepare and share the lessons they teach. Move them to model a sincere devotion to the Scriptures. Lead us to plan for and support the Christian training of children. Bless the schools and teachers who prepare public ministers of the gospel for service in our churches and around the world. Lead teachers and professors to be faithful to your Word and provide insights that enable them to pass on your truth to their students. Ignite the zeal of young men and women to be willing and eager to share the truths of Scripture with others. Move us to support with our prayers and gifts the schools our synod has established. We pray that you send workers in your harvest fields. Work in us that we may find the lasting value of growing in the grace and knowledge of Christ. Lead us to be faithful in our personal study of the Scriptures and in participating in regular Bible classes. Rid us of all thoughts that Christian education ends in our youth. Make us life-long students of your precious Word. Lead us to believe that at every age your Word remains a lamp for our feet and a light to our path. How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your Word. Even when we are old and gray, lead us to meditate on your decrees that we may delight in your wonderful deeds.

Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.

TODAY Sunday Morning Bible Study

We are currently studying who Jesus is, what he has done for us, and what he is doing now. This material is taken from our Grow in Grace Class. We use our Grow in Grace Class as a membership class, but it is also a great review and an opportunity to ask questions. Now would be an excellent time to make this study a part of your Sunday routine! Please join us at 9:00 AM in the GraceTucson Fellowship Hall.

Children’s Bible Hour Summer Session: TODAY

Calling all investigators! Children ages 3-12 and invited to join us on Sunday mornings throughout the summer for Children’s Bible Hour. We are using a special summer curriculum called “Faith Case: Fruit of the Spirit.” This fast-paced, videobased program will teach us how our “fruits” show that we have Jesus in our hearts. Each week, we will receive assignments from “The Commissioner,” watch the antics of “Adam Apple,” and engage in games and activities that will reinforce the truth we are learning that week. Parents can drop-off their children in the Education Building at 8:45 on Sunday mornings and pick-them up again at 9:45. All of the children will remain together in a larger group for these sessions. Older children are invited to come help with the games and activities. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Patoka.

Altar Flowers

The flowers beautifying our altar today have been given by Paul and Kay Kassulke in celebration of their 46th wedding anniversary today! If you would like to provide flowers for the altar, please call (520-623-6633) or email (office@gracelutheransaz.org) the Grace Central Office to reserve a Sunday. The next available dates are August 14, 21, and 28. The cost for the 2 bouquets is $32.50. After the 10:00 AM service you may take the flowers home or leave them to be dropped off to one of our homebound members if a visit is being made.

Summer Bible Camp Picnic

Please join us following our 10:00 AM worship service this morning for our Summer Bible Camp Picnic! All food is provided—just come to the courtyard and Fellowship Hall to enjoy time with your church family. The kids can also enjoy some fun activities!

Quarterly Offering Statements

Those who use the offering envelopes or Simply Giving for their giving to the Lord should have received a quarterly offering statement in the mail recently. We hope you’ll appreciate the opportunity to check for any recording errors we may have made and perhaps use it to review your gifts of love to your Savior. SPIRITUAL GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES Church History Bible Study

Our Church History Bible Study, which usually meets at 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM on Wednesdays, will not be meeting again until August 3. We hope you will join us then as we continue discussing the Church during the Enlightenment (approximately 1650 - 1800 A.D.).

Women’s Bible Study: Thursday

The Precious Position of a Woman of God study will be ending soon. We will then be working through a book called “Prepared to Answer” by Pastor Mark Paustian, a professor at Martin Luther College. Common questions and viewpoints that come from non-Christians (and even Christians) will be addressed in a handful of pages each and provide ways we can be prepared to answer them. Here is a small sampling of subjects from the book: “Do you really believe in miracles?” “But I’m prochoice” “There are no moral absolutes” “There are things I’ll never be able to forgive” “With so many interpretations and denominations, who can say who is right?” “Why doesn’t he answer my prayers?” The book for the study is provided at no cost to you and is yours to keep. Watch for a start date and plan to join Pastor Koehler for what should be a very helpful study for us and for those we have discussions with about such things. You are always welcome to bring friends, including those who are not Grace members. This class meets on Thursday at 9:00 AM in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall.

Grow in Grace Class

Would you like to learn more about our risen Savior Jesus, about the Bible that tells us about him, and about what Grace Lutheran Church believes and teaches? Our congregation offers a series of Bible-based lessons called Grow in Grace. Grow in Grace also serves as our membership class for those who may be interested in joining the church. ANNOUNCEMENTS Summer Fun Night: July 29

Join us for some family fun at our Go for the Gold competition THIS Friday, July 29, at 6:30 PM in the Grace-Tucson Student Center located in the church basement. We will enjoy competitions in basketball, foosball, ping pong, pool, and Pictionary. Pizza and drinks will be provided. This celebration is part of our “Summer Fun Nights” series of events taking place on select Friday nights throughout the summer. Each Friday will be a different theme and is designed for all ages. Members from ALL sites are encouraged to attend! This is an excellent opportunity to invite your unchurched friends and family so they can get to know us in a relaxed setting. There are invitation postcards available for you to use at each door to church and in the Fellowship Hall.

Lifeliners F3: July 31

The Lifeliners (our high school youth group) have been getting together this summer on select evenings for Food, Faith, & Fun (F3) in the Grace-Tucson Student Center! Our last Lifeliners F3 will be next Sunday, July 31, from 6:00-8:30 PM where we’ll enjoy Eegee’s, a Bible Study called “Looking Up” about worship, and the award-winning party game “Wits & Wagers.” RSVPs are appreciated and can be sent to Pastor Patoka.

Blog Series by Northwestern Publishing House

“God just wants me to be happy.” “God helps those who help themselves.” How many times have you heard these sayings in secular culture or from a professing Christian? Despite their catchy, positive appeal, these sayings and others like them have dangerous implications for Christian theology. There is a blog series hosted by Northwestern Publishing House which is aimed at alerting us to these and other popular but deceptive beliefs. The blog series is based on the Bible Study 10 Lies About God, written by Martin Luther College professor Rev. David Scharf. Each blog post focuses on one of these lies, exploring versions of the lie that we may encounter in our daily lives, refuting the lie with God’s Word, and pointing to resources for further reading. Anyone desiring a special prayer may also contact Laura to give her the details of the prayer request. She will relay the request to the members of the Prayer Group, who will then pray specifically about the request. May God continue to bless this group and cause more prayer to be brought to him through it.

Grace has a library from which you can borrow a wide variety of books! If it has been a while since you’ve visited our library or if you have never been in there, now is a great time to stop by! Our library is located at the west end of the Fellowship Hall. Our librarian, Katrina McClure, has reorganized all the books and they are ready for you to check out! You will find check-out instructions on the wall above the desk. If you have previously checked out books and forgotten to return them, please drop them on the desk in the library when you are finished.
