Worship Notes We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises, and as you oﬀer him your thanks and praise.

The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are now available for those who desire them. Today we are using elements from the new Christian Worship hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. We hope this will help our members and friends become better acquainted with these new books. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video live-streaming. VICTORIOUS To the world he seemed like a defeated man: opposed and killed by his enemies, his followers scattered in fear. Yet three days after Jesus’ death he rose victorious from the dead. Nothing would ever be the same. The rest of eternity is now a victory march for the risen Christ. During Easter, we should not think of ourselves as passive observers in Christ’s victory. Rather, we are active participants in Christ’s triumph. Just as his death was our death, so also his life is our life. Buried with Christ in baptism, our life is now hidden with him on high. The victory is ours, now and forever. Easter is more than a day. It is an entire joyful season. The six solemn weeks of Lent are eclipsed by seven weeks of unbridled joy. These seven weeks correspond to the period of fifty days on the Jewish calendar between Passover and Pentecost. The Church reserves its highest praise for the Easter season. We do not merely watch from the sidelines as Christ marches in victory over sin, death, Satan, and hell. We join in the festal procession! CONFESSION OF SINS Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us. ABSOLUTION Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his called servant: I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

Christ gave the authority to forgive the sins of penitent sinners to his church: “Whenever you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven.” (John 20:23)

Acts 14:8-22

In Lystra there was a man who was sitting down because he had no strength in his feet. He had never walked because he was lame from birth. 9When he was listening to Paul as he was speaking, Paul looked at him closely and saw that he had faith to be healed. 10Paul said in a loud voice, “Stand up on your feet!” And the man jumped up and began to walk.

As a witness of Christ’s resurrection, Paul’s joy and his ministry were unaﬀected by circumstance.

When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form.” 12Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes, because he was the main speaker. 13The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and garlands to the city gates, because he wanted to oﬀer sacriﬁces along with the crowds. 14

But when the apostles Paul and Barnabas heard about this, they tore their clothes and rushed into the crowd, shouting, 15“Men, why are you doing these things? We too are men with the same nature as you. We are preaching the good news to you so that you turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything in them. 16In past generations he allowed all the nations to go their own ways. 17Yet he did not leave himself without testimony of the good he does. He gives you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons. He fills you with food and fills your hearts with gladness.” 18Even though they said these things, they had a hard time stopping the crowds from sacrificing to them.

Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and persuaded the crowds to stone Paul. When they thought he was dead, they dragged him out of the city. 20But after the disciples had gathered around him, he stood up and went into the city. The next day, he left with Barnabas for Derbe. 21

After they preached the good news in that city and had gathered many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, 22strengthening the souls of the disciples and encouraging them to continue in the faith. They told them, “We must go through many troubles on our way to the kingdom of God.” The Word of the Lord.

Revelation 21:21-27

The twelve gates are twelve pearls. Each of the gates is made out of one pearl. And the street of the city is pure gold, like transparent glass.

The great joy we have now will soon be made perfect and complete.

I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, because the glory of God has given it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. 25There is no day when its gates will be shut, for there will be no night in that place. 26They will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. 27Nothing that is unclean and no one who does what is detestable or who tells lies will ever enter it, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suﬀered under Pontius Pilate, was cruciﬁed, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

The Apostles’ Creed developed in the Early Christian Church as a personal confession of faith. It is so named because it confesses the faith taught by the Apostles of Jesus.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Loving God and Lord, you created the universe that surrounds us and the globe on which we live. You control all things through your Son, who sits at your right hand in glory.

Comfort us with the promise of your eternal presence. Give your Word power as it works in our hearts and minds. Clear away our confusion, and demolish our doubts. Send your Spirit to strengthen both our conﬁdence in your promises and our desire to live according to your will. Take away our love of sinning, and restore us each day by your grace. The signs of the times warn us that the end of time is near. Protect us from scoﬀers who sneer at your truth. Spare us and Christians around the world from all forms of hate and persecution. Mold us and move us to be good examples for our youth. Hold in your care, Lord, those who are experiencing physical or emotional pain and all who are aﬄicted by disease or facing death. Pour out your compassion on the grieving, and comfort the mourners who miss someone they loved. Move us to pray for these brothers and sisters and to help when we can. Divine Call Received

Pastor Patoka was informed on May 7 that Peace Lutheran Church in King of Prussia, PA had voted to extend to him a Divine Call to serve as their pastor. This means that he now holds two calls, one to Grace-Tucson and one to Peace in King of Prussia. He is working to make a decision whether to accept the new Call and move his ministry to Pennsylvania or to decline the Call and continue serving here. He will strive to make that decision with prayer and careful consideration where his particular gifts for ministry fit best. Pastor Patoka welcomes any input that the friends and members of Grace might wish to share with him. You can reach him by email at RevTLP@GraceLutheranSAZ.org or by phone at (520)6236633. He also appreciates prayers offered on behalf of him and Katie during this deliberation as well as for both congregations. This morning, Pastor Patoka will lead a Bible study and discussion of the two calls he now holds during Adult Bible Study. In addition to reviewing some biblical principles about the doctrine of the call, he will describe some specifics about his call deliberations.

Devotional Books

Grace Moments and Meditations daily devotional books are available to pick up at either door to church and in the Fellowship Hall. A new Meditations book with devotions beginning May 29 is now available.

Church History Bible Study: Wednesday

In our Wednesday Church History class we are studying how Pietism still impacts us today. Even if you haven’t attended this class before, you are always welcome! We study together in the GraceTucson Fellowship Hall at 10:00 AM and repeat the same material at 7:00 PM. Join us for whichever time fits your schedule best!

Women’s Bible Study: Thursday

It might surprise some to know how highly God speaks of women in the Bible and how much he prizes them. The secular world certainly does not characterize Christianity and the Bible that way. Perhaps you have not always felt that women are precious to God or have been uncertain about the God-given roles for men and women. All ladies are invited to join Pastor Koehler for a comprehensive look at the many things God has to say about the importance and value of women and get to know some of the Bible’s notable women. This class, The Precious Position of a Woman of God, meets on Thursday mornings at 9:00 AM in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall.

ANNOUNCEMENTS ALA Commencement Concert & Graduation: May 26 & 27

The annual ALA Commencement Concert will take place on Thursday, May 26, at 7:00 PM in the ALA gymnasium. Several students from Grace will participate in this concert. The musical selections will span the decades from the 70s and beyond with performances by ALA’s Concert Choir, A Cappella Choir, Freshman Choir, and Concert Band. No tickets are needed; all are invited to this free concert! On Friday, May 27, ALA will graduate 44 students from the class of 2022. The service will begin at 1:00 PM with the graduation ceremony immediately following. We will not be limiting seats or requiring tickets. Memorial Service: May 28

On April 20, 2022 the Lord called Grace member Josephine Davis home to heaven. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 28, at 1:00 PM at Grace-Tucson. Refreshments will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Gifts given in memory of Jo will be directed to Grace’s Music Fund. They may be sent to Grace Lutheran Church, 830 N. 1st Avenue, Tucson, AZ 85719. Jo’s family and friends appreciate your prayers.

Children’s Bible Hour Summer Session: Begins June 5

Calling all investigators! Children ages 3-12 and invited to join us on Sunday mornings throughout the summer for Children’s Bible Hour. Beginning on June 5, we will start a special summer curriculum called “Faith Case: Fruit of the Spirit.” This fast-paced, 10 week video-based program will teach us how our “fruits” show that we have Jesus in our hearts. Each week, we will receive assignments from “The Commissioner,” watch the antics of “Adam Apple,” and engage in games and activities that will reinforce the truth we are learning that week. Parents can drop-off their children in the Education Building at 8:45 on Sunday mornings and pick-them up again at 9:45. All of the children will remain together in a larger group for these sessions. Older children are invited to come help with the games and activities. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Patoka.

Lifeliners F3: June 5 & 19

The Lifeliners (our high school youth group) will be getting together this summer on select evenings for Food, Faith, & Fun (F3) in the Grace-Tucson Student Center! Our first Lifeliners F3 will be on Sunday, June 5 from 6:00-8:30 PM where we’ll enjoy a pizza dinner, Bible study on how Christians can have a God-pleasing good time, and laugh-out-loud fun with Pastor Patoka’s assortment of party games. RSVPs are appreciated and can be sent to Pastor Patoka.

Memorial Service: June 11

On May 8, 2022 the Lord called Grace member Ray Bondy home to heaven. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 11, at 11:00 AM at Grace-Tucson. A meal will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Ray’s family and friends appreciate your prayers.

Summer Bible Camp (VBS): July 18-22

Come along for the trip of a lifetime! In the mornings of July 18-22, Grace-Tucson is hosting a “Road Trip Route 3:16” Summer Bible Camp for children ages 3-12. (Older siblings are welcome to help.) We will be inspired by U.S. road trip destinations and learn important truths about God and his plan for our salvation through lessons, crafts, songs, and games.
