FIRST LESSON From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis. From there we traveled to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days. On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered
Acts 16:11-15 there. One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.
During the Easter season, the First Lesson is taken from the book of Acts, where we see the spread of the Gospel.

The Psalms were the hymnbook of the Old Testament. These poems, inspired by God, have been set to music and used in the worship lives of God’s people for thousands of years. We give praise to God and encouragement to one another as we incorporate the singing of Psalms or selected verses of Psalms into our worship services.

The Apostles’ Creed developed in the Early Christian Church as a personal confession of faith. It is so named because it confesses the faith taught by the Apostles of Jesus.
APOSTLES’ CREED C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.

This hymn is based on Psalm 1, “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked…” While it is taken from a different part of Scripture than our reading for today, it employs a similar picture to the one Jesus uses in today’s Gospel when it refers to the fruits that come from our connection to God’s Word.

Divine Call Extended At the Voters’ Meeting on April 15, our congregation extended a call to Pastor Matt Hennig to serve as our Mission Pastor at Grace-Benson and Grace-Vail. Pastor Hennig currently serves Christ Lutheran Church—a multi-site congregation in North St. Paul and Hugo, MN. Pastor Hennig is also deliberating a call from Atonement Lutheran Church in Plano, TX. Please keep Pastor Hennig, his wife Karen, and their three sons in your prayers as they deliberate over where the Lord would have them serve at this time.

Grace Team Trivia Night The next Grace Team Trivia Night is happening on Friday, May 4 at 6:00 PM in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall. This event is open for everyone to attend. Donations for St. Marcus Students Once again this year Grace is hosting a group of WELS 7th grade students from St. Marcus Lutheran School in Milwaukee. They are arriving in Tucson on May 17 through the program “Discover America” which rewards students based on their academic performance and behavior. Each student raised a portion of the expenses to come on the trip. We are accepting donations to pay for the food that will be served to the students and teachers while they are here. You can make a cash donation or use a check made payable to Grace Lutheran Church (note St. Marcus on the bottom of the check). Donations can be placed in the box marked “St. Marcus” near the main entrance to church. We will be collecting donations until May 13. If you are interested in helping prepare or serve meals to the St. Marcus students and teachers during their stay with us (May 17-19), please contact the church office: 623-6633.
Kingdom Workers Presentation Kingdom Workers, a WELS organization committed to empowering Christians to serve in mission work worldwide, is hosting an informal presentation on Friday, May 11, from 5:30 - 7:30 PM at Joel Rhoad's home. This event is targeted towards adults who are interested in learning more about Kingdom Workers and possibly motivated to make a financial donation at some time. Youth Confirmation at Vail On Sunday, May 6, Aliyah Armstrong, daughter of Charles and Sherry Armstrong, will be confirmed. Confirmation will take place during the 10:00 AM worship service at Vail. We look forward to celebrating with Aliyah on this special day as she publicly confesses her faith in Christ and becomes a communicant member of Grace! 12
Youth Fitness Camp at Grace-Sahuarita From June 14 through July 19, Grace-Sahuarita will host a Youth Fitness Camp (ages 6-13) every Thursday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at GraceSahuarita. Each week the youth will learn life skills about gardening, cooking, fitness, strengthening, and healthy choices. God’s Word will be connected to all of these life skills. There will be weekly challenges that the youth can take home to share with their families. There is no charge for this program and lunch will be provided. The camp is limited to 40 youth. Vacation Bible School Space Station Salvation is scheduled to blast off at Grace-Tucson on July 23! This Vacation Bible School will run every morning from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, July 23-27. Astronauts ages 3-13 are invited to join us for Bible lessons, crafts, music and snacks. More details about registration and ways you can volunteer will be available soon.
Apache Clothing & Fabrics Drive Donations are still being collected for our fellow believers living on the Apache reservation. These items will be delivered in spring and summer. Donated items should be clean and unstained. Bedding, clothing (especially infant and children’s sizes), and fabric and sewing material (used to make clothing and quilts) is appreciated. Golf Outing You are invited to participate in a golf outing sponsored by Friends of Redeemer supporting the Redeemer Student Tuition Fund. The shotgun start has been changed to begin at NOON on Saturday, May 5 at Crooked Tree Golf Course. Cost is $65 per golfer or $240 for a foursome and includes 18 holes of golf, use of a cart, and lunch. Apache Mission Anniversary Celebration 125 years ago, the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod established its first World mission in the White Mountains of the Arizona Territory. This year we celebrate the many blessings God has bestowed on this mission to the Apache people. Two celebration events are planned. The first will be held on June 22 in Green Bay, WI in connection to the LWMS convention. The second will be held in Peridot, AZ on October 26-28.
