Fourth Sunday of Easter Good Shepherd Sunday
Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church Tucson, AZ April 22, 2018
Our mission at Grace is to teach the inspired and inerrant Word of God, to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of the world, and to nurture believers for lives of Christian service. We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today at Grace-Tucson! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises and as you offer him your thanks and praise.
Worship Notes The order of service we follow is printed out in this worship folder. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people.

The fifty days following Easter constitute the oldest season of the Christian year. These fifty days correspond to the period in the Jewish year between the Passover and the Feast of Weeks. Because of the importance of this season its Sundays are named “Sundays of Easter” rather than “Sundays after Easter.”

Jesus, Shepherd of the Sheep Christian Worship #436

INVOCATION Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son ( ) and of the Holy Spirit. Congregation: Amen.
CONFESSION OF SINS M: Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us. C: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish pride, For sins of habit and sins of choice, For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do, You should cast me away from your presence forever. O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus' sake.
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” James 5:16
ABSOLUTION M: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his called servant: I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son ( ) and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. 2
Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression "Lord, have mercy" is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian Church.
LORD, HAVE MERCY—Kyrie
Mark 10:47
M: In peace, let us pray to the Lord. For the well-being of all people everywhere, that they may receive from you all they need to sustain body and life, hear our prayer, O Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. M: For the spread of your life-giving gospel throughout the world, that all who are lost in sin may be brought to faith in you, hear our prayer, O Christ. C: Christ, have mercy. M: For patience and perseverance in this life, that we may not lose the hope of heaven as we await your return, hear our prayer, O Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. M: Lord of life, live in us that we may live for you. C: Amen.
Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things he has done to accomplish our rescue from sin. “Glory to God in the Highest” has been a Christian song of worship since the fourth century.
GLORY BE TO GOD Gloria in Excelsis
Luke 2:14
Please join in singing the response below following a brief introduction. (Sung to the tune of "I Know that My Redeemer Lives," Christian Worship #152)

THE WORD SALUTATION M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. 3
PRAYER OF THE DAY M:
Let us pray.
C:
O Lord Jesus Christ, you are the Good Shepherd who laid down your life for the sheep. Lead us now to the still waters of your life-giving Word that we may abide in your Father's house forevermore; for you live and reign with him and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM (10:00 AM) M:
In obedience to the command of our Lord and trusting in his promise, you have brought Everett to be baptized. Jesus told us: “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” It is in baptism that God grants the new life of forgiveness, joy, and peace to little children. By the power of God’s Word, this gracious water of life washes away sin, delivers from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe. Receive the sign of the cross on the head and heart ( ) to mark you as a redeemed child of Christ. Everett Otto Dins, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The Almighty God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—has forgiven all your sins. By your baptism, you are born again and made a dear child of your Father in heaven. May God strengthen you to live in your baptismal grace all the days of your life. Peace be with you.
EXHORTATION M:
Brothers and sisters in Christ:
C:
Our Lord commands that we teach his precious truths to all who are baptized. Christian love therefore urges all of us, especially parents, to assist in whatever manner possible so that Everett may remain a child of God until death. If you are willing to carry out this responsibility, then answer: Yes, as God gives me strength. Yes, as God gives me strength.
M:
Let us pray:
C:
Merciful Father in heaven, we thank you for the blessing of baptism by which you offer and grant the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. Help us to regard our baptism as the robe of righteousness we are to wear all the days of our life. Look with special favor on Everett and grant him a rich measure of your Spirit that he may grow in faith and godly living. Make us willing to carry out our responsibilities to those who have been baptized, so that all of us may finally come to the blessed joys of heaven, through Jesus our Lord. Amen. 4
During the Easter season, the First Lesson is taken from the book of Acts, where we see the spread of the Gospel. In today’s lesson, we hear the words of Paul as he was speaking to the church leaders in Ephesus.
FIRST LESSON
The words to this hymn are based on the text of Psalm 23.
VOCAL SOLO
“Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order
Acts 20:28-32 to draw away disciples after them. So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears. Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.”
The Lord’s My Shepherd
The Lord’s my Shepherd; I’ll not want. He makes me down to lie In pastures green; he leadeth me The quiet waters by. He leadeth me, he leadeth me The quiet waters by. My soul he doth restore again And me to walk doth make Within the paths of righteousness, E’en for his own name’s sake. Within the paths of righteousness, E’en for his own name’s sake. Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale, Yet will I fear no ill; For thou art with me, and thy rod And staff me comfort still. For thou art with me, and thy rod And staff me comfort still. My table thou hast furnished In presence of my foes; My head thou dost with oil anoint, And my cup overflows. My head thou dost with oil anoint, And my cup overflows. Goodness and mercy, all my life, Shall surely follow me, And in God’s house forevermore My dwelling place shall be. And in God’s house forevermore My dwelling place shall be.
SECOND LESSON To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as On the Sundays in the Easter season, the verse of the day is preceded by the Easter proclamation and framed with Alleluias.
5
VERSE OF THE DAY M:
1 Peter 5:1-4 God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
John 10:14
Alleluia. Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia. I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me. Alleluia.

GOSPEL
John 10:11-18
M: The Gospel according to John chapter ten. C: Glory be to you, O Lord. “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I

lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

APOSTLES’ CREED C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
The Apostles’ Creed developed in the Early Christian Church as a personal confession of faith. It is so named because it confesses the faith taught by the Apostles of Jesus.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 6

LORD’S PRAYER
Matthew 6:9-13
C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.

Grace Lutheran Church is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), a group of nearly 400,000 men, women, and children in nearly 1,300 congregations across the United States and Canada united by a common faith in Christ's saving love. We are committed to a common calling—encouraging each other in our faith and sharing God's gift of a Savior with the rest of the world.
