Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things he has done to accomplish our rescue from sin. “Glory to God in the Highest” has been a Christian song of worship since the fourth century.

FIRST LESSON It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword. When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread. After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover. So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him. The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists. Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him. Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision. They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through
Acts 12:1-19 it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him. Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.” When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door. When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran b ac k wi th ou t o pe ni n g i t an d exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!” “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.” But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished. Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,” he said, and then he left for another place. In the morning, there was no sma ll commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he crossexamined the guards and ordered that they be executed.
During the Easter season, the First Lesson is taken from the book of Acts, where we see the spread of the Gospel.

SECOND LESSON Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and found that the Lord had opened a door for me, I still had no peace of mind, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia. But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task? Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as

2 Corinthians 2:12-3:6 those sent from God. Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, like some people, letters of recommendation to you or from you? You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. Such confidence we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. And while they still did not believe it because of joy and
amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence. He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. The Nicene Creed was first developed in 325 at the First Council of Nicea. It was written to reaffirm the Biblical teaching of the divinity of Jesus, God’s Son. Like the Apostles’ and Athanasian Creeds, the Nicene Creed is a confession of what the Bible teaches.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

DISTRIBUTION The Bible teaches that the Lord’s Supper is a unique communion of Christ and the individual believer as well as a coming together of people who hold to the same beliefs. Because of these Scriptural truths, we practice Member Communion at Grace. Those who are confirmed members of Wisconsin Synod congregations (WELS) are invited to receive the Lord’s Supper with us. If you are not a WELS member but have an interest in receiving Holy Communion, please speak with the pastor after church today or at another time. We are aware that there are a number of other teachings about Holy Communion, and we want it to be a blessing for you, so we would look forward to sharing with you what God says about this Sacrament. We provide gluten-free communion wafers for those with wheat allergy, gluten-sensitivity or celiac disease. These wafers are stored and handled separately to avoid cross-contamination. They are “bread” as Scripture requires and are consecrated along with the rest of the bread. For those requiring gluten-free wafers, please take one from the container on the stand located at the front rail as you approach for communion. Simply hold it so that the pastor can see it at the time of distribution. Grape juice is available for those who for health or medical reason require it instead of wine. Bible Study Opportunities Join us for a Bible study on the Book of Galatians on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall! Great Exchange at Redeemer Redeemer’s next Great Exchange will be held April 16-18. This free event is open to all WELS church and school families and friends. All items are donated and are free for the taking. Snacks will be available to eat while you “shop.” Hours are 7:00 AM-6:00 PM Monday and Tuesday and 7:00 AM-1:30 PM on Wednesday. Donated items can be dropped off in the afternoon today or at any time during the Great Exchange. All items left at the end of the exchange are donated to a local charity.
ALA Spring Theater Production Arizona Lutheran Academy invites to you attend their production of Twelve Angry Jurors. This heightened courtroom thriller puts you on the edge of your seat while powerfully exploring what it means to live in a democracy. Performances are Friday, April 27 at 7:00 PM; Saturday, April 28 at 7:00 PM; and Sunday, April 29 at 3:00 PM. Grace member Colton Watson will be performing in this event!
ALA Golf Outing The 25th ALA Golf Classic will be held on April 28 at the beautiful Legacy Resort in Phoenix with a 1:30 PM shotgun start. The Golf Classic is the main fundraiser for the ALA Athletic Department. This four-person scramble tournament includes golf, cart, dinner, gifts, and prizes. The shotgun start begins at 8:00 AM on Saturday, May 5 at Crooked Tree Golf Course. Cost is $65 per golfer or $240 for a foursome and includes 18 holes of golf, use of a cart, and lunch. Forms and payment are due by April 25. You can find registration forms hanging on the bulletin board in the fellowship hall. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Donations for St. Marcus Students Once again this year Grace is hosting a group of WELS 7th grade students from St. Marcus Lutheran School in Milwaukee. They are arriving in Tucson on May 17 through the program “Discover America” which rewards students based on their academic performance and behavior. Each student raised a portion of the expenses to come on the trip. Starting next Sunday, we will be accepting donations to pay for the food that will be served to the students and teachers while they are here. You can make a cash donation or use a check made payable to Grace Lutheran Church (note St. Marcus on the bottom of the check). Look for the donation box near the main entrance of church next Sunday, April 22.

Grace Team Trivia Night The next Grace Team Trivia Night is happening on Friday, May 4 at 6:00 PM in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall. This event is open for everyone to attend. Teams will be formed that evening and the trivia will commence. Questions will come from a wide range of topics for all ages. Snacks will also be provided. Questions?
