WORSHIP NOTES
Welcome to Grace!
Our mission at Grace is to teach the inspired and inerrant Word of God, to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of the world, and to nurture believers for lives of Christian service.
Check out the GRACE WEBSITE at GraceLutheranSAZ.org
We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises, and as you offer him your thanks and praise.
The worship service is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. Those wishing to leave an offering can do so at the exit today or give online at www.GraceLutheranSAZ.org/give. (You can also scan the QR code to the right to access the online giving page.)

Today we are using elements from the Christian Worship hymnal. If you would like to worship from a hymnal today, you will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each row; however, you do not need to use a hymnal if you so choose, as everything needed for worship is printed in this worship folder.
Welcome Grace Guests!
If you are a guest at Grace today, we are very happy to have you worship with us! If you would like more information about Grace or have questions about becoming a member of our congregation, please speak to Pastor Heiman.

I believe in the Son. I believe in the risen One.
I believe I overcome by the power of his blood.
Amen, amen, I’m alive, I’m alive because he lives.
Amen, amen, let my song join the one that never ends because he lives!
I was dead in the grave; I was covered in sin and shame. I heard mercy call my name; he rolled the stone away!
Amen, amen. I’m alive, I’m alive because he lives.
Amen, amen. Let my song join the one that never ends!
Because he lives, I can face tomorrow, because he lives, every fear is gone. I know he holds my life, my future in his hands.

EASTER DIALOGUE
Jesus Christ was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
Since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God.
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. In all things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
Death has been swallowed up in victory.
Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for us.

JobÊ19:25
JobÊ19:27
ColossiansÊ3:1
ColossiansÊ3:4
LukeÊ24:5-6
Jesus is the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in him will live, even though they die.
And those who live by believing in him will never die.
I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth. I myself will see him with my own eyes I, and not another.
Since you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
When Christ, who is our life, appears, we will appear with him in glory.
Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!
PsalmÊ118:24
This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Christ is risen!
He is risen indeed! Alleluia!
EASTER PRAYER
Almighty God, by the glorious resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ, you conquered death and opened the gate to eternal life. Grant that we, who have been raised with him through Baptism, may walk in newness of life and ever rejoice in the hope of sharing his glory; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be dominion and praise now and forever.
Amen. PSALM OF THE DAY I Will Not Die But Live PsalmÊ118

DEVOTION Mark 15:42-16:4
SETTING
42 It was already evening, and since it was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath), 43 Joseph from Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, boldly went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. He summoned the centurion and asked him if Jesus had been dead for a long time. 45 When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he granted the body to Joseph. 46 Joseph bought a linen cloth, took him down, and wrapped him in the linen cloth. He laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of rock, and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where the body was laid.
1 When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so they could go and anoint Jesus.
2 Very early on the first day of the week, at sunrise, they went to the tomb. 3 They were saying to each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance to the tomb for us?” 4 When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away.
HYMN Christ Jesus Lay in Death’s Strong Bands

5 Here the true Paschal Lamb we see, whom God so freely gave us; he died on the accursèd tree so strong his love to save us. See, his blood now marks our door; faith points to it; death passes o’er, and Satan cannot harm us. Alleluia, alleluia!
6 So let us keep the festival to which the Lord invites us; Christ is himself the joy of all, the sun that warms and lights us. Now his grace to us imparts eternal sunshine to our hearts; the night of sin is ended. Alleluia, alleluia!
7 Then let us feast this Easter Day on Christ, the bread of heaven; the Word of grace has purged away the old and evil leaven. Christ alone our souls will feed; he is our meat and drink indeed; faith lives upon no other! Alleluia, alleluia!
5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. 6 He said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”
8 They went out and hurried away from the tomb, trembling and perplexed. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.

WITNESSES
9 After Jesus had risen early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons.
10 She went and reported to those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. 11 When they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe it.
12 After these things, Jesus appeared in another form to two of them as they were walking along on their way to the country. 13 These two also returned and reported it to the rest. But they did not believe them either.
14 Later, he appeared to the Eleven themselves as they were reclining at the table. He rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen him after he had risen.

VERDICT
19 If our hope in Christ applies only to this life, we are the most pitiful people of all.
20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came by a man, the resurrection of the dead also is going to come by a man. 22 For as in Adam they all die, so also in Christ they all will be made alive. 23 But each in his own order: Christ as the firstfruits and then Christ’s people, at his coming. 24 Then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, after he has done away with every other ruler and every other authority and power. 25 For he must reign “until he has put all his enemies under his feet.” 26 Death is the last enemy to be done away with. 27 Certainly, “he has put all things in subjection under his feet.” Now when it says that all things have been put in subjection, obviously that does not include the one who subjected all things to him. 28 But when all things have been subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to the one who subjected all things to him, in order that God may be all in all.

4 Once bound by fear, now bold in faith, they preached the truth and pow’r of grace and pouring out their lives they gained life, life everlasting. (Refrain)
5 The pow’r that raised him from the grave now works in us to pow’rf’lly save. He frees our hearts to live his grace; go, tell of his goodness. (Refrain)

EASTER RESPONSIVE PRAYER
Almighty and merciful God, on this glorious day we rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Increase our faith that the message of the empty tomb may fill our lives and make us glad each day.
When we are weak, be our strength; when we are sad, be our song; and when we sin, be our salvation.
Remove the hurt of death from all who mourn. In moments of grief call believers through the voice of our Good Shepherd and embolden us to follow his promises. In their hopelessness of despair turn the faithless to trust in the only Way, Truth, and Life.
Wipe away tears born of death and give new birth to a living hope in the hearts of the lost and troubled. Use our witness as compassion and comfort for others in need of mercy.

King of kings and Lord of lords, destroy all dominion, authority, and power that stands against you, whether seen or unseen. Whatever evil exerts itself against your saving will false teaching or lukewarm faith, Satan’s lies or worldly pleasures, empty worship or futile religion rule it for the sake of the gospel’s free course.
Triumph over our enemies and empower the Church to fight the good fight to the end. Never leave us or forsake us.
Walk among our churches, O Living One, as the faithful witness and firstborn from the dead. As your angel sent women with news of the risen Christ, call women in our church to announce, “He is risen!” As you sent your disciples with the breath of the Spirit, call those in our church full of the Spirit and wisdom to administer the keys of the kingdom.
Wherever we live and whatever we do, help us to be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks us to give the reason for the hope that we have in Christ.
Heavenly Father keep the baptized united with your Son in his resurrection. Put to death the fleshly urges of those caught in addictions, clothe in your righteousness anyone ashamed of good intentions which have fallen short, and assure those searching for purpose that their eternal identity as your dear children is sealed.
Thank you for the power of baptism working in our lives, and for the certainty of its promises through the resurrection. Enrich us with everything we need for life and godliness.
Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence.
SilentÊprayer
O Lord of life, you have done mighty things for us! We pray through him who is the Beginning and the End, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
His name is above every name, to the glory of God the Father! Amen.
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Divine Call Received
Pastor Patoka was informed on March 5 that Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lancaster, CA voted to extend to him a Divine Call to serve as their pastor. This means that he now holds two calls, one to Grace and one to Our Shepherd. He is working to make a decision whether to accept the new Call and move his ministry to California or to decline the Call and continue serving here. He will strive to make that decision with prayer and careful consideration where his particular gifts for ministry fit best.
Pastor Patoka welcomes any input that the friends and members of Grace might wish to share with him. You can reach him by email at RevTLP@GraceLutheranSAZ.org or (540)623-1149. He also appreciates prayers offered on behalf of him and Katie during this deliberation as well as for both congregations.
