Tenebrae Service Good Friday
Grace Lutheran Church Tucson, AZ March 30, 2018
Jesus Christ Is Our Great High Priest TENEBRAE Tenebrae is the La n word for “darkness.” The Service of Darkness is a devo onal and medita ve service held on Good Friday to commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus. The Service of Darkness is not a funeral service for Jesus but a me for adora on of the Lamb of God in which we celebrate his sacrifice on the cross of Calvary. The darkness in the church symbolizes the miraculous Tenebrae, the darkness which surrounded the cross and darkened the earth from noon un l three o’clock on the day Jesus died.
SEVEN CANDLES The seven candles in the front of the church are lit prior to our service this evening. Throughout the service the candles are ex nguished and the lights are dimmed represen ng the ex nguishing of the life of Jesus. The seventh candle is not ex nguished, but it is removed from the chancel. Just as Christ’s body was hidden in the grave un l the third day, so also the seventh candle is removed from sight for a short me. It is returned to its place at the end of the service as a reminder of Christ’s return from death to life.
SILENCE In keeping with the solemnity of the day, there is no pre-service or post-service music. The service begins in silence and ends in silence. Worshipers are invited to remain a,er the service for as long as they wish for prayer and medita on. All are asked to leave the sanctuary, the courtyard, and the parking lot in silence. The s llness and darkness of tonight are intended to contrast with the bright and glorious celebra on of Easter morning.

Night of Tears, Night of Grace Steven Aldredge
The night our Savior went into the garden, He fell upon His knees and bowed His head With tears and blood He cried to God, “Oh Abba, Father, take this cup of pain far away, But let Your will be done; I will obey.” O night of tears and night of grace, When sorrow stained the Savior’s face, O night when love came flowing down, His anguish was the only sound. The night our weary Savior climbed the mountain, He hung up on the cross and bowed his head, They pierced His side, with love He cried: “Forgive them, Father,” was His plea for sinners just like me. My soul was saved by grace on Calvary! O O O O
night of tears and night of grace, When sorrow stained the Savior’s face, night when love came flowing down, His cry of love the only sound. night when love came flowing down, Blood flowing from His crown and side, night our Lord and Savior died, when tears and grace came flowing down.
