Fourth Sunday in Lent

Grace Lutheran Church Tucson, AZ March 11, 2018

Our mission at Grace is to teach the inspired and inerrant Word of God, to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of the world, and to nurture believers for lives of Christian service. We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today at Grace-Tucson! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises and as you offer him your thanks and praise.

Worship Notes The order of service we follow is printed out in this worship folder. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people.

•

stand for a few moments in the entryway, sometimes that’s all that’s needed;

•

go down the stairs to the left in the entryway—they will lead down to the Child Care Room where you will still be able to see and hear the service;

Hymns are found in our hymnal, Christian Worship, which is the red book in the pew rack in front of you.

•

visit the private Mother’s Room across the courtyard in the women’s restroom—you will be able to hear the service there also.

Large print hymn sheets are available in the entryway. You may also ask an usher or greeter to get one for you. We believe that many blessings come from having families worship together and we love to have children in worship! If you need to calm a restless child, you may: WELS Tucson Campus Ministry

Printed copies of the sermon are available in the entryway. CDs of the entire worship service will be made upon request from the sound technician in the balcony. It only takes a few minutes to copy. You may also find sermons and services in print, audio and video on our website: www.GraceLutheranSAZ.org 2nd Street

The Season of Lent leads the Church on a forty-day journey of repentance, remembrance, and prayer. It is a time to consider the sufferings and death of Jesus and to prepare for Easter. This is especially true during midweek services in Lent. The Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days and have only hints of the season’s mood, such as the omission of “Alleluias.” Sundays are islands of refreshment in our Lenten walk. Purple is the color of the season and represents repentance and solemnity.

PRESERVICE MUSIC: 7:45—Amazing Grace Arranged by Jim Brickman 10:00—Amazing Grace Arranged by Cindy Berry

LENTEN GATHERING RITE Remember Your Love The vocalist(s) will introduce the refrain. The congregation repeats the refrain and sings it again as indicated.

The vocalist(s) sings these words from Psalm 27: The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom should I fear? The Lord is my life and my refuge, when I call, God hears. Refrain If you dwelt, O Lord, upon our sinfulness, then who could stand? But with you there is mercy and forgiveness and a guiding hand.

Our service today begins with a “gathering rite.” This order musically ties together the invocation, confession, Kyrie (Lord, have mercy), and absolution and also replaces an opening hymn. The solemn tone of this gathering rite reminds us of our sin and our need for a Savior. We are comforted by God’s great mercy for us in sending Jesus to be that Savior.

Refrain O Lord, hear the sound of my call and answer me. My heart cries out for your presence; it is you I seek. Refrain

INVOCATION M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. M: The grace of our Lord ( ) Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you.

2

CONFESSION We come before the true God only because of his mercy and not because we deserve to come. We confess our unworthiness and rejoice to hear the assurance of forgiveness.

M: As we prepare to celebrate the mystery of Christ’s love, let us confess our sin and ask the Lord for pardon and strength. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie

After the vocalist sings each verse, follow the corresponding line below:

1. Lord Jesus, you came to heal all blindness: 2. Christ Jesus, you see what we cannot see: 3. Lord Jesus, you bring light to the world: Vocalist

ABSOLUTION M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son ( ) and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Please join in singing the refrain once more.

PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray. Almighty God, we confess that we deserve to be punished for our evil deeds. But we ask you graciously to cleanse us from all sin and to comfort us with your salvation; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. 3

THE WORD FIRST LESSON They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!” Then the Lord sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. The people came to

Numbers 21:4-9 Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.

PSALM OF THE DAY

PSALM 38

The First Lesson is frequently a reading from the Old Testament. It shares a common theme with the Second Lesson (often from one of the epistles) and the Gospel.

The vocalist(s) will sing the verses of the psalm. The congregation is invited to join on the refrains and the final verse.

O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. For your arrows have pierced me, and your hand has come down upon me. My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear. Refrain All my longings lie open before you, O LORD; my sighing is not hidden from you. I wait for you, O LORD; you will answer, O Lord my God. Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior. Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain 4

SECOND LESSON But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable

The Verse of the Day is a familiar or significant Scripture text which focuses our thoughts and attention on the theme of the service or the season of the church year.

The congregation stands out of respect for the words of Christ our King.

Ephesians 2:4-10 riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

VERSE OF THE DAY John 3:16 M: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

WORSHIP CHOIR (10:00 AM) For God So Loved the World For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (John 3:16-17 KJV)

GOSPEL

John 3:14-21

After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings:

5

“Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned

already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

After the Gospel, the congregation sings:

APOSTLES’ CREED C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed developed in the Early Christian Church as a personal confession of faith. It is so named because it confesses the faith taught by the Apostles of Jesus.

OFFERING Members of Grace respond to their Savior’s love with offerings that are given joyfully, generously, regularly, and in a way that is proportionate to how the Lord has blessed them. Their cheerful gifts support the mission and ministry of our congregation. If you are a guest today, please know that we do not expect you to contribute to our congregation’s work. However, if you would like to give an offering to the Lord in response to his love to you, we are happy to receive it and put it to work in God’s kingdom. Please fill out the Friendship Register located in the red folder at the end of the row and pass it along. Thank you! If you prefer, use your smart phone to give online by scanning this QR code.

7:45 AM—Please stand and continue with the Prayer of the Church on the bottom of page 8. 10:00—Please remain seated.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM with CONFIRMATION of Katrina McClure Grace offers a series of classes for adults called Grow in Grace classes. In these classes the pastors cover the basic teachings of Holy Scripture, the Christian faith, and explain the doctrines and practices of our Lutheran church. Those who have a possible interest in becoming members at Grace are encouraged to speak with one of the pastors about these classes.

M:

Katrina, in coming to be baptized, you are doing what is God-pleasing. We are reminded of how Ananias said to the apostle Paul after his conversion to faith, “Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away.” By the power of the Word, the Holy Spirit has led you to believe that new life in Christ is yours. Now in Holy Baptism the Lord Jesus assures you of your salvation. That you may give public testimony of your faith, I therefore ask you: Do you believe that you were born in sin and therefore eternally lost?

NM: Yes, I believe. M:

Do you believe in the triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit?

NM: Yes, I believe. M:

Do you believe that this triune God planned and carried out your salvation?

NM: Yes, I believe. M:

Do you believe that God grants you the forgiveness of sins in Holy Baptism?

NM: Yes, I believe. M:

Do you desire to be baptized?

NM: Yes, I do. 7

M:

Receive the sign of the cross to mark you as a redeemed child of Christ. Katrina Louise McClure, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The Almighty God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—has forgiven all your sins. By your baptism, you are born again and made a dear child of your Father in heaven. May God strengthen you to live in your baptismal grace all the days of your life. Katrina, is it also your desire to become a communicant member of Grace?

NM: Yes. M:

Do you believe all the canonical books of the Bible to be the inspired Word of God?

NM: I do. M:

Do you believe that the teaching of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, as you have learned it in the Grow in Grace Class, is faithful and true to the Word of God?

NM: I do. M:

Do you intend to continue steadfast in this teaching and to endure all things, even death, rather than fall away from it?

NM: I do, and I ask God to help me. M:

Do you intend faithfully to conform all your life to the teachings of God’s Word, to be faithful in the use of the Word and sacrament, and in faith and action remain true to God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—as long as you live?

NM: I do, and I ask God to help me. M:

Katrina, may God, who began a good work in you, bring it to completion at the coming of our Lord Christ Jesus. Your church now welcomes you into communicant membership, with all the rights, benefits, and responsibilities that this entails, and invites you to receive the Sacrament of the Lord’s body and blood. Accept this invitation with deep reverence and holy joy. Regard your communing at the Lord’s Table as a precious privilege given you by God through his Church; receive this Sacrament thankfully and often. The almighty and most merciful God— Father, Son ( ), and Holy Spirit—bless and keep you.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH M: C: M: C:

M:

C: M:

C:

M:

C:

Heavenly Father, you loved the world and gave your Son to liberate us from sin and death by his obedient death on the cross. We confess that without your love we are lost. Lord of the Church, we thank you for the treasure of the gospel. By your Spirit, keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. Strengthen our determination to do what pleases you, no matter what the danger or the cost. Let us pray for those who carry a cross in the name of Christ and face ridicule and persecution for the sake of the kingdom: missionaries and chaplains, young people who stand up for what is right in the face of pressure to do what is wrong, and all who pay a high price for their faith and their values as Christians. By your Spirit, O Lord, grant them patience and endurance. Let us pray for those who carry heavy burdens in life: the sick and the chronically ill, the depressed and the lonely, those torn by conflict in personal relationships, those victimized by war and injustice, and all who face the terrors of life with a heavy heart. Grant them peace, O Lord, and in your mercy, be their guardian and friend, their comfort and hope. Let us pray for those who care for others: pastors and counselors; physicians and nurses; social workers and caring friends; all who feed the hungry, comfort the hurting, and stand beside the dying. Strengthen them in their work, O Lord, and do not let them become weary in doing good.

Special prayers and intercessions may follow.

M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer.

M:

C: Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.

9

Help us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Keep us faithful even to the point of death, that we may receive the crown of life, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Grace Lutheran Church is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), a group of nearly 400,000 men, women, and children in nearly 1,300 congregations across the United States and Canada united by a common faith in Christ's saving love. We are committed to a common calling—encouraging each other in our faith and sharing God's gift of a Savior with the rest of the world.
