Worship Notes We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises, and as you offer him your thanks and praise. The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. Today we are using elements from the new Christian Worship hymnal. You will find these new worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. We hope this will help our members and friends become better acquainted with these new books. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video live-streaming. Our Epiphany Series—Uncovered We are in the season of the church year called Epiphany, a Greek word that means “to appear.” Salvation has appeared in the person of Jesus Christ. In Epiphany, the church explores everything that Christ makes apparent about God. You see, we need God to appear to us and make himself known to us. For not only is God beyond our understanding, his works and ways are contrary to mankind’s natural assumptions about him. In other words, the truth of God cannot possibly be discovered by us. Rather, it needs to be uncovered for us. That’s what the Spirit is doing for us during this season of Epiphany. Week after week, surprising truths about Jesus our King and life in his kingdom will be uncovered. ANOINTING UNCOVERED: What the eye sees differs from what God decrees DELIGHT UNCOVERED: God delivers more than we ask, not less RECEPTION UNCOVERED: Rejection is not the exception but the rule AGENDA UNCOVERED: What must be said, not what others want to hear UNCOVERED MESSENGERS: The least qualified are the first sent DEFINITIONS UNCOVERED: Blessings are cursed; curses are blessed REACTIONS UNCOVERED: Love your enemies; overcome evil with good GLORY UNCOVERED: When it is most hidden, it is most on display Our Theme for Today—UNCOVERED MESSENGERS: The least qualified are the first sent It does not surprise us that from the beginning of his ministry Jesus demonstrated his commitment to proclaiming good news of the kingdom of God, regardless of whether people rejected his message or embraced it. That was Christ's agenda, and he was committed to it. What is surprising is that, also from the beginning, Jesus demonstrated his plan to carry out his proclamation by sending others to speak on his behalf. More surprising is whom he sends, not angels, but mere human beings. In many cases, it was individuals who seemed to lack the qualifications to speak on Christ's behalf. Yet, Christ equipped and prepared them. Do you feel unqualified to tell others the good news? Then be assured, Jesus plans to use you exactly for that purpose.

Kyrie

“Kyrie” is the Greek word for “Lord.” The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian Church.

Please join in singing this song this morning. Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things he has done to accomplish our rescue from sin. The “Gloria in Excelsis,” Latin for “Glory to God in the Highest,” has been a Christian song of worship since the 4th century. It echoes the words the angels proclaimed to the shepherds in Luke 2:14.

For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

Isaiah admitted he was unclean, guilty of every type of sin. In his grace, the Lord not only takes Isaiah’s sin away but also sends Isaiah out as a messenger of grace.

FIRST READING

Isaiah 6:1-8

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2Above him stood the seraphim. Each one had six wings. With two they covered their faces. With two they covered their feet. With two they flew. 3One called to another and said, Holy, holy, holy is the L of Armies! The whole earth is full of his glory! 4

The foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of the one who called, and the temple was filled with smoke. 5

Then I said, “I am doomed! I am ruined, because I am a man with unclean lips, and I dwell among a people with unclean lips, and because my eyes have seen the King, the L of Armies!” 6

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, carrying a glowing coal in his hand, which he had taken from the altar with tongs. 7He touched my mouth with the coal and said, “Look, this has touched your lips, so your guilt is taken away, and your sin is forgiven.” 8

God’s plan is to send saved sinners to proclaim salvation to other sinners. God has no backup plan.

Romans 10:12-17

So there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, because the same Lord is Lord of all, who gives generously to all who call on him. 13Yes, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14

So then, how can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one about whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without a preacher? 15And how can they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news of peace, who preach the gospel of good things!” 16

Luke 5:1-11

One time, while the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. 2He saw two boats there along the lakeshore. The fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3Jesus got into one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from the shore. He sat down and began teaching the crowds from the boat. 4When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water, and let down your nets for a catch.”

Jesus takes simple, self-admittedly sinful fishermen. He removes their fears, calls them to follow, and makes them fishers of men.

Simon answered him, “Master, we worked hard all through the night and caught nothing. But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their nets were about to tear apart. 7They signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. 8When Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, because I am a sinful man, Lord.” 9For Peter and all those with him were amazed at the number of fish they had caught, 10and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “Have no fear. From now on you will be catching people.” 11

After they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him. M: C:

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. How clear is our vocation, Lord, when once we heed your call: to live according to your Word and daily learn, refreshed, restored, that you are Lord of all and will not let us fall.

Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.

As he speaks the Words of Institution, the pastor both proclaims the words of Jesus to the congregation and sets apart the bread and wine for this special use. The sign of the cross reminds us of Christ’s death.

DISTRIBUTION

The Bible teaches that the Lord’s Supper is a unique communion of Christ and the individual believer as well as a coming together of people who hold to the same beliefs. Because of these Scriptural truths, we practice Member Communion at Grace. Those who are confirmed members of Wisconsin Synod congregations (WELS) are invited to receive the Lord’s Supper with us. If you are not a WELS member but have an interest in receiving Holy Communion, please speak with the pastor after church today or at another time. We are aware that there are a number of other teachings about Holy Communion, and we want it to be a blessing for you, so we would look forward to sharing with you what God says about this Sacrament.

TODAY Distribution of Holy Communion This morning, Grace will offer Holy Communion by continuous distribution. Those who intend to commune will be invited to approach from the side aisle. The pastors and assistants will distribute the elements to households in turn. Pause to receive the wafer in your hand as the assistant speaks the words, “Take and eat the body of Christ.” Pause and take a cup as the pastor speaks the words, “Take and drink the blood of Christ.” Deposit the cup carefully in the receptacle provided, and return to your seat by the center aisle (those seated on the wings may walk to the back by the center aisle and back up the side aisle). When all the members who desire to commune have done so, a blessing will be shared with the congregation (which previously would have been spoken over the full “table” of those receiving the sacrament as they were assembled in front). We provide gluten-free communion wafers for those with wheat allergy, gluten-sensitivity, or celiac disease. These wafers are stored and handled separately to avoid cross-contamination. They are “bread” as Scripture requires and are consecrated along with the rest of the bread. For those requiring gluten-free wafers, please take one from the stand located at the front rail as you approach for communion. Simply hold it so that the pastor can see it at the time of distribution. Grape juice is available for those who for health or medical reason require it instead of wine. Please speak with a pastor about providing grape juice for you on future Sundays. To aid in your personal preparation for Holy Communion, a list of Christian Questions can be found on pages 295-296 in the hymnal. These were prepared by Martin Luther for those intending to receive the Sacrament. Prayers that may be used before and after receiving communion are found on pages 14 and 15 of this worship folder.

Altar Flowers

The flowers beautifying our altar today have been given by Pastor and Beth Kassulke in thanks to God for many blessings, especially those of family and friends. If you would like to provide flowers for the altar, please call (520-623-6633) or email (office@gracelutheransaz.org) the Grace Central Office to reserve a Sunday. Upcoming available dates are February 13, 20, and 27. The cost for the 2 bouquets is $32.50. After the 10:00 AM service you may take the flowers home or leave them to be dropped off to one of our homebound members if a visit is being made.

Fellowship

Sunday Morning Bible Study

God’s grace, his chosen people, the truth of Scripture, and the work God gives Christians—those are the topics we are discussing in our Sunday morning Bible study, at 9:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall. It is based on the short film, Here We Stand, and recalls Martin Luther’s stand at the Diet of Worms. We will consider what these truths mean for our faith. As we do, we can’t help but thank God for the blessings we have received from Luther’s bold stand five hundred years ago.

Lifeliners Chupala Lunch: February 27

Grace's high school youth group, the Lifeliners, invite you to join them following the 10:00 AM worship service on Sunday, February 27 at Grace-Tucson for their annual Chupala Lunch. Chupala is a delicious chicken and bean dish with southwestern spices that is served with tortillas or corn chips and toppings (lettuce, tomatoes, olives, cheese, etc.). The lunch after church is a great time to enjoy some fellowship. The Chupala Lunch is also one of the ways that the Lifeliners raise funds for their activities. Donations are appreciated (checks may be made out to Grace), but you are welcome to eat even if you are unable to contribute. The funding for this event is sponsored by a Thrivent Action Team.

ACSTO Donations for Grace Members

Thank you to the many members who make use of the Arizona Tuition Tax Credit to support our students at Redeemer Lutheran School and Arizona Lutheran Academy! It has been especially helpful to have donations recommended for a specific student at one of these schools. The Arizona Christian School Tuition Organization (ACSTO) has made it even easier to help our member students specifically. While recommendations cannot be guaranteed (by law), you can recommend that your donation be used to support “Grace Lutheran Southern AZ” members. ACSTO will use that recommendation in the process of directing funds, and will have the full list of Grace members attending schools where they are eligible to receive the awards. You can even find this option in the drop-down menu of the online donation form at the ACSTO website, www.ACSTO.org. Remember that this option is available to those who have state tax liability in Arizona and allows them to receive a tax credit up to the full amount of their donation. Grace member Jeff Weinstein (520-909-7649, JeffWeinstein@ACSTO.org) is also an employee of ACSTO. He is able to help answer questions you may have and will give a brief announcement about the Tuition Tax Credit after the worship services here at Grace-Tucson on Sunday, February 13. 17
